4 out of 5 stars INSPIRED PERFORMANCE !!!!.......2006-08-29

The concert starts out with 6 unispired perfomances of songs with no variations from the original studio versions, and what is worst, bad sound : muddy bottom end, subdued vocals, buried guitar and keyboards. From track seven till the end of the concert, you will feel as if the doctor had removed wax from your ears. A dinamic, crystal clear sound begins to penetrate your skull, and what is better, the versions of the songs are now sped up and full of welcome and almost radical variations. First surprise :Tricks, The Sleeprom and This Disease, 3 songs nowhere else to be found on a live Numan record.A superb version of My Breathing, on which new drummer Gregg Brimstone starts showing off his solid, agressive, killer style. When you thought Cars couldn't surprise you any more, you got it between the eyes ! Sister Surprise and an incredible bass counterpoint all along it.THE most energetic and emotive We Are Glass with the most frenzy of audience singalongs . The intro to AFE always sends chills down my spine and this time is no exception. Live debut for a song of the first album, My Shadow In Vain. Closing the album, THE best version of Berserker ever commited to plastic, heavily punctuated by Russel Bell's incredible guitar. The vocals are somewhat echoey but I've come to learn that's Hammersmith Odeon syndrome. If you can get past those first 6 tracks, this is a 5 stars live album.
Definitively NOT for completists only !!!

3 out of 5 stars Gary Numan-'Exhibition Tour 1987:Ghost'(Cleopatra)2-CD .......2005-02-12

I'll give it 3 1/2 stars.Nearly as good as Numan's 'White Noise' live release(see my review).I never knew that Gary Numan had so many live albums out.No complaints though,I always like hearing live recordings.'Ghost' seems to be more dance/pop oriented rather than new wave-ish like his other live CD's I've heard.Overall,it's a decent find. Some of the tunes I've never heard before include "Call Out The Dogs","Creatures" and the two songs from his '86 'Strange Charm' lp,"The Sleep Room" and "My Breathing".One thing I do know is that Numan and his touring band gave the crowd what they mostly came to hear and that would be(as far as I'm concerned)the eight(8) old tracks from his 1978-82 era.Enjoyed hearing his trademark whinny-like vocals croon to the gems like "I Die:You Die","Me,I Disconnect From You",his big hit here in the states "Cars","Metal","We Are Glass","Are 'Friends' Electric?","Down In The Park" and "My Shadow In Vain".Well done.Line-up:Gary Numan-vocals,Chris Payne-keyboards,John Webb-keyboards,vocals&sax,Russell Bell-guitar,Nick Davies-bass and Greg Brimstone-drums.

5 out of 5 stars You guys are kidding me, right?.......2003-11-13

Ghost is a helluva recovery from the admittedly dreadful "Skin Mechanic," but is IRS's crappy recording his fault?

Ghost restores one's faith in Gary and bridges the NUMA years with his latter work. It cannot be compared with that coming later in all fairness.

I find the cover and insert photos compelling and thematically consistent and the reworkings of old favorites as enticing as ever. Stop looking for reasons to lose faith and embrace those values that keep you in the fold.

4 out of 5 stars An Underrrated Effort.......2000-03-11

Gary Numan has released quite a few live albums. There's been "Living Ornaments 79," "Living Ornaments '81", this album, "The Skin Mechanic," "Dream Corrosion," and the excellent "Dark Light". From all of these, my two favorites are "Ghost" and "Dark Light".

Numan's music translates EXTREMELY well live. While many of the songs on his albums sound sparse and very simple, in the live format, the guy really shines.

"Ghost" covers Numan's material from 1977 up to "Strange Charm" in 1986. This tour was for a 1987 greatest hits package entitled "Exhibition". Some of the best moments are songs from "The Fury": "Call out the Dogs," and "Creatures" to name a few.

The only downside to this for me is Numan's picture on the cover... The constipated look just doesn't work. Forget that and enjoy the music.

2 out of 5 stars Not Very Compelling.......1999-12-01

Gary's put out more than his share of live albums, and they range from stellar to stupid. This one isn't his worst (the thankfully-out-of-print SKIN MECHANIC takes that prize) but it's awfully uninteresting. Once again, Gary's on vocals alone, which seems to keep him from getting too much into the performance. At least he doesn't forget the words much this time, but that's hardly praise, now, is it? The backing musicians are decent, the song selection is a bit obvious... Recommended for completists only.
