5 out of 5 stars Intoxicating Listening Experience.......2007-01-13

Anyone who loves Celtic music or who is simply caught up in the new age inspired by the Lord Of The Rings trilogy will adore this CD. The tragic, romantic Irish legend of Deirdre is brought to stunning melodic life - Mychael Danna and Jeff Danna have created a harmonious, haunting ensemble with a variety of instruments, including uillean pipes, higland pipes, penny whistles and the Celtic harp. If you feel that you are being transported back and time and are seeing this story unfold you are not alone. I was throughly enchanted by this CD and I feel all the more proud of my Celtic and Anglo-Saxon roots because of it. Sit back, enjoy, and prepare to be enthralled!

4 out of 5 stars Awesome.......2007-01-06

I purchased another CD from Mychael and Jeff Danna, "The Legend of Liadain and Curithir" and wanted to see if their other works were just as good. They didn't disappoint. The music on "The Legend of Deidre" is very moving and pulls the listener in. Not to mention I love being able to read the actual legend that inspired the music.

5 out of 5 stars Lost in a living legend.......2006-08-07

The brothers O'Danna have done an excellent job on this recording. Every time I listen to it, I feel like I'm immersed in the Legend of Deirdre. The orchestration is balanced yet creative, the portrayals epic yet believeable, and the songs unique yet unified.
Bagpipes feature heavily in these recordings, so you might not care for some of the songs if you don't like that sound. I, however, was utterly enchanted by the CD despite my predisposition against that instrument.
"A Celtic Tale" is haunting in its beauty, and I cried over its songs more than once. If you love the Celtic style and enjoy an emotional musical setting, then this CD is definitely for you.

4 out of 5 stars No legend story on this disc - be forewarned.......2006-06-25

I bought "A Celtic Tale" to replace a copy I had bought years ago that had gone bad. The thing that I liked best about the disc was the legend that was told on the disc, so, boy, was I surprised when the new one I ordered just has the music with no story. The music is very good, but, if you are looking to hear the story, apparently it's been removed from a newer release somehow, and, for what reason I don't know, because it was a good story.

5 out of 5 stars AWESOME.......2006-02-11

This is a beautiful album. When I listen to the music, I can clearly see the story unfolding in my mind. The music really "gets me" in my stomach.

4 out of 5 stars Another good one by Mychael & Jeff.......2007-05-03

I had one of their other CDs and wondered if this would be as good. It is.

4 out of 5 stars Wonderful.......2007-01-06

I really enjoyed this cd. I had heard a sample of it while in a pet shop and had to have it. The music really pulls you in. Not to mention the bit of history you get reading the legend of Lladain and Curithur that is provided in the jacket. I would recommend this to anyone who enjoys instrumentals that tell a story.

5 out of 5 stars Fabulous Solo Soprano.......2006-08-25

Just heard this CD for the first time and....WOW!!! What amazing vocals ....the soprano voice is so delicate and pure... simply sublime...The emotion of the singer was truly beautiful and made the experience of listening to the CD a magical experience.

1 out of 5 stars Lifeless & Bland .......2006-08-08

My decision to buy this CD was based on a combination of previous reviews and the theme of the piece; both, as it turned out, extremely misleading.
This could have been, should have been, a great CD. The theme is romantically rich with possibilities galore and the artists involved are obviously talented and gifted, but this is not a great CD. It isn't even a good one. There's a strange flatness and utter lack of passion in the performances of these pieces that I find absolutely baffling. Even the orchestral passages sound weak and faded without any richness or depth.
The one and only exception, the only real high point of all 12 selections is "Dia Dha Mo Chaim". This is positively exquisite and the only reason I gave this CD any stars at all. It's beauty and mastery serve to show just how good these folks can be when they set their minds and hearts to it. Why they failed to make the effort on the 11 remaining cuts is sadly bewildering.
If you want beautiful music with a Celtic feel, created and presented with a romantic passion that'll knock your socks off, forget this watered down dud and check out Enaid's (David Arkenstone) "Avalon" or David Arkenstone's "Music Inspired by Middle Earth" & his "Spirit Of Ireland".

5 out of 5 stars A Celtic Romance: The Legend of Lladain and Curithur.......2006-03-16

5 out of 5 stars 5 Stars Is Not Enough.......2005-11-15

I have exposed a number of people to Connie Dover, young and old, and have yet to find anyone who doesn't immediately fall in love with her. Let's put it in a nutshell: If you listen to Connie and don't become instantly hooked, by all means have your head examined!
However if I have already conviced you and you want to know which of her titles to purchase, sorry, I can't recommend just one. Stick a crowbar in your wallet and get all 4! It will be the best $60+/- you've ever spent. Now stop reading these reviews and place your order!

5 out of 5 stars The Borders of Heaven.......2005-08-12

Connie Dover's latest, "The Borders of Heaven", is an apt this for this CD. Her vocals are crisp and clear as ever.
The accompanying musicians are the cream of the crop. They include Phil Cunningham and John Hartford. It's another production triumph for Phil Cunningham. All in all a beautiful set of tunes.
I have all of Connie's recordings and I believe that this is the best to date.

5 out of 5 stars Dances with Wolves.......2004-11-30

This is a great CD, I love Connie Dover, and anything she sings is always beautiful. I am writing this particular review for any of those folks who are looking for the name of the song (or the song itself) that Kevin Costner sings in the wonderful movie Dances with Wolves. Connie actually sings this old folk song here, it is track #10, "Winter's Night". Why it is called that is beyond me, but there ya go. Song titles....go figure. Connie sings many wonderful old folk songs on this CD, but she makes them her own, and that is her talent. This is a great CD. Period.

5 out of 5 stars Beautiful Renditions of Traditional American Songs.......2004-06-26

It's hard not to fall in love with Connie Dover, who looks and sings like an angel. She has cited Steeleye Span and its lead singer, Maddy Pryor, as an early influence. That makes sense, because she is perhaps the purest soprano folk singer I have heard since Maddy Pryor. Before I acquired this CD, my only exposure to Ms. Dover was several songs here and there on various Celtic music collections, but on each and every one, her voice always stopped me in my tracks. So when I saw this collection of early American folk tunes (and the songs that inspired them), I thought it was a bit of a departure for her. But these arrangements strikingly emphasize the Scots-Irish influence on American folk music. Even old chestnuts like "Sweet Betsy from Pike" and "Streets of Laredo" can be heard in a new light. Ms. Dover gets expert assistance, too, from familiar names like Phil Cunningham (who also produced), Jerry Douglas and John Hartford. This is an impressive effort from one of the most beautiful voices in traditional music.

5 out of 5 stars Connie's renditions set a standard which is hard to match........2002-05-25

'The Border of Heaven' is aptly named, for many of the songs on this - Connie Dover's fourth solo CD - have a dreamy, angelic feel to them. Of course there are more upbeat numbers too, but then that is typical of this singer's records - a bold but effective mix of gentle Celtic ballads, 18th and 19th century American folk songs, a spiritual piece or two, and a smattering of Connie Dover's own compositions, which on this CD include the intriguingly original 'Last Night by the River', complete with the sound of an eagle wing-bone whistle!

As is usual with this artist, all the songs are very very good. Several of the tracks may be familiar to lovers of traditional music, but Connie Dover's versions invariably set a standard which is hard to match. Her rendition of the sad but true story of 'LORD FRANKLIN' and his ill-fated crew of adventurers is simply the best I have heard. 'THE WATER IS WIDE' is also performed beautifully. And as for 'THE SAILOR CUT DOWN IN HIS PRIME', I think Connie's version of this familiar melody is perfection itself, although the style in which guest artist Skip Gorman sings the companion piece 'The Streets of Laredo', is not to my own personal taste. The up-tempo songs include the jolly 'SWEET BETSY FROM PIKE' and 'WINTERS NIGHT', whilst 'I AM GOING TO THE WEST' is another of Connie Dover's own compositions - and yet it sounds just as 'traditional', and every bit as good, as the old, tried and tested standards. The spiritual song on this CD is the hymn 'WONDROUS LOVE' - wondrous indeed! The CD closes with two more lovely tracks, the achingly sentimental 'MY DEAREST DEAR', and finally 'BROTHER GREEN', a melody, not so much from the border, as from the very heart, of Heaven.

The standard of this artist has been well maintained in this, her most recent CD to date - happily Connie Dover is seemingly still singing, and writing, the most charming of songs. Less happily, Connie Dover CDs seem to come out rather sparsely, at three year intervals - so here's hoping we don't have to wait yet another three years for the next one. It pains me to say this as a Brit living in the land where so much of Connie's inspiration comes from, but there's nobody better in the world at singing this kind of material than this American. Certainly nobody I know of in my country. And there's still a huge wealth of beautiful material out there just awaiting her attention; so come on Connie - get recording again! In the meantime, just enjoy this, her latest contribution to the world of tradional folk. She is, as I say, the best in the business.

Product Description

With LEGEND, Steve McDonald draws to completion the amazing story that began with the epic SONS OF SOMERLED. As with all of McDonald's work, LEGEND is a gripping continuation of the story of the Highlands. The music is both dramatic and beautiful with Steve's stunning vocal chorus highlighting this profound and musically rich tale. Cinematic in scope, you will travel into the heart of the Celtic tale and live the journey of the Celtic soul. As the culmination to this amazing series, LEGEND lives up to everything all of its predecessors shared, the story of a people and a spirit that will forever live on.

5 out of 5 stars The Magic Continues.......2005-07-08

Legend continues Steve McDonald's celtic magic. He weaves a musical picture of Scotland and it's history...and it's myths. The two are blended to produce a fanciful and charming feeling that we are there and almost a part of it all.

4 out of 5 stars Great Celtic CD.......2003-11-23

This is my first Celtic CD. I really like it. It makes you want more CD's of Steve McDonald.

4 out of 5 stars Good Not Great.......2003-11-17

Legend follows in the same vein as past McDonald albums.
The middle songs are a bit weak but the last 3 songs finishing strong. I still recommend this music for Steve's fans and lovers of Celtic songs.

It's nothing new for David and Diane Arkenstone, the core members of New Age quartet Enaid, to be inspired by mythology; the appropriately timed Music Inspired by Middle Earth is proof enough of that. Avalon is another collection in a similar vein, a compendium of instrumental pieces that take their titles from landmark events and concepts within the classic story. This CD is somewhat less driven by narrative, and occasionally, the music appears to refer to nothing in particular. The opening "Road to Camelot," a dance-appropriate piece with a medieval flavor, leads into "Enchantment," which features wordless vocals and a slower, more ethereal mood. While "The Spirit of Excalibur" and "The Round Table" put the listener on firmer ground, this collection has a less universal flair, tending rather toward personal interpretation. In that sense, it's vintage David Arkenstone; not, perhaps, a groundbreaking work, but diverting enough in its own right. --Genevieve Williams

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Mystical Tranquility.......2006-12-08

I adore this CD!! The perfect music to decompress on the ride home after a stressful day at work!! I'm giving it to friends as Christmas gifts!

4 out of 5 stars Easy listening for King Arthur junkies.......2006-08-07

"Avalon: A Celtic Legend" is a pleasant, upbeat collection of songs with a distinctly medieval flavor. Composed by David Arkenstone ("Music Inspired by Middle Earth," "The Celtic Book of Days"), each song on this CD depicts a scene from the life of the fabled King Arthur.
The simplicity of the songs makes them good as "background music," but not as suitable for serious listening. They tend to get a little repetitive after a while, so make sure you have something else to occupy your mind while you're listening. (I often play this CD while I'm lifting weights or working on an art project, for instance.)
Overall, this CD is a good investment. Although not as spellbinding as "A Celtic Romance" or "Celtic Mysteries II," "Avalon" is a refreshing recording and a relaxing addition to any Celtic lover's collection.

5 out of 5 stars Great CD!.......2005-02-21

Excellent CD, the more I play it, the more I enjoy it! I wish I had bought it a long time ago.

5 out of 5 stars Very appealing and inspiring!.......2002-12-05

Melodies and instrumentations influenced by the traditional music of the British Isles are rendered with a modern sensibility that is part New Age, part epic soundtrack. These lush, engaging compositions by Diane and David Arkenstone combine acoustic and electronic instruments, as well as occasional vocalise and whispered texts by Diane (whose name spelled backwards creates the pseudonym "Enaid"). This recording could easily be a companion work to the Arkenstones' "Music Inspired by Middle Earth"; it is equally appealing, telling a different story, but with similar textures and techniques. I find both recordings to be quite evocative and inspirational, and if they were old vinyl LPs, I'd have worn the grooves out by now. If you aren't familiar with David and Diane Arkenstones' work, start with these two CDs, and if you're already a fan, you're sure to love these top-notch additions to the repertoire! David's earlier release, "The Celtic Book of Days", also has British Isles theme and is quite enjoyable. Other similarly evocative "soundtracks" to historical and fantasy legends include Mychael and Jeff Danna's "A Celtic Tale: The Legend of Deirdre" and "A Celtic Romance: The Legend of Liadain and Curithir", as well as Jeff Johnson and Brian Dunning's "Byzantium: The Book of Kells and St. Aidan's Journey", and "Music of Celtic Legends: The Bard and the Warrior". Buy them all and put them on a multi-CD mixer for hours of compelling journeys through time and mood!

5 out of 5 stars Simply beautiful!.......2002-07-30

The first time I heard this CD was through browsing the New Age section of a Borders bookstore. It is one among others that they have displayed for sample listening. The front cover caught my attention. After listening to the first track, I told myself that this is definately a *must have* CD. The music is simply so beautiful that I stood there and listened to the whole CD. The enchanting music makes you feel as if you are actually there in the time of King Arthur. There are just no other words to describe this. If this CD is not part of your collection, then you are definately missing out!

    5 out of 5 stars Terrific album.......2005-05-01

This is an amazing album. It grabs you from the first track. The combination of the melodies and the way they are delivered is irresistable. It's a real shame it's out of print. And one shouldn't get hung up on the French pronuncation, because this is medieval and/or Renaissance French, where they actually pronounced all those letters that modern French leaves out.

5 out of 5 stars I don't speak French, so I'm crazy about this band.......2000-04-09

With the choice of "La Belle Dame Sans Merci" as a cover picture, you begin to appreciate this group on several levels.

The painting by Sir Frank Dicksee is a visual adaptation of a poem by John Keats. The musical adaptations of this very talented group are equally rich in color and texture. The traditional carol, "Drive The Cold Winter Away", has a freshness and vitality that carries over into all the other songs. Other songs are treated with equal verve and evident passion for early music.

If you must limit your purchases of early music to only the very best, then this is certainly one group to collect.

3 out of 5 stars With some reservations..........2000-01-05

I agree with almost everything that the previous reviewer has said about this most enjoyable album, but there is one major caveat: Mr. Phyfe's pronunciation of foreign languages ranges from adequate to downright painful. His French, in particular, is so poor that it is a real distraction from his admittedly wonderful singing. Everything else about this recording, and its sequels, is first-rate.

5 out of 5 stars A stunning debut release from Owain Phyfe & friends........1999-11-20

With a voice like chocolate velvet and backed by some of the finest instrumentalists playing on period instruments, Owain Phyfe made the music of the Renaissance available to everyone with this magical debut recording. From the joys to the laments of this unique period in time, his clear vocals and seemingly easy style of delivery regardless the language make every track a joy. The arrangements and recording are marvelous, and I highly recommend this as a very fine addition to anyone's collection, or the perfect introduction to the sound of the true balladeer during the age of chivalry.

5 out of 5 stars A wonderfully mythic and moving album by Llewellyn!.......2006-10-02

Livelier than his previous CD, "Ghosts," Llewellyn's "Celtic Legend" manages to capture all the mystery, danger, timelessness and heart of eight tales from Celtic lore in these intense, cinematic, richly orchestrated instrumentals. Don't look for reels, ballads and other traditional Celtic fare here; Llewellyn's distinctive compositional style instead blends the best of New Age-style atmosphere and elegance with the deeper, epic sweep characteristic of good movie soundtracks--not necessarily music to meditate to, but very evocative and always a good listen! The Celtic spirit is here even if traditional Celtic musical conventions are note. And this album has great flow--the music always moves along, evolving and developing in a multi-layered, multi-tracked swirl of sound, effortlessly transporting a listener to elsewhere and otherwhen. Very nice! Joining multi-instrumentalist Llewellyn are Juliana on vocalise (i.e. wordless "oohs and ahhs"), Tori Donovan on recorders and other instruments, Sandra Cross on violin and Medwin Goodall on acoustic guitar. There is another album out there with the title "Celtic Legend" by Bruce Huron. I bought it by mistake, thinking it to be this one. However, it was a happy mistake--it's every bit as good, a bit more traditionally Celtic in style, but with some similar qualities to Llewellyn's work, so give it a try too! And for more great music by Llewellyn, try "Mysts of Avalon," "Moonlore" and "Ghosts." For other cool, New Age interpretations of Celtic lore, try also "A Celtic Tale" and "A Celtic Romance" by Mychael and Jeff Danna, "Patrick," and "Music of Celtic Legends: The Bard and the Warrior" by Jeff Johnson and Brian Dunning, and the work of Loreena McKennitt.

5 out of 5 stars Favorite Show Soundtrack.......2006-11-18

I watched the Robin Hood series and always wondered who did the music. My wife found this album in a record store in Madrid and we were hooked the moment we put it on. All of the songs from the show were there without the dialogue getting in the way.

The music is Paganish and dreamy and Clannad are totally unique. From what I've experienced with new age music, there is nobody else out there that sounds quite like them.

There are so many favorite cuts, I can't single out any except for maybe Robin, the Hooded Man.

Very cool stuff and highly recommended.

4 out of 5 stars Clannad and Robin.......2003-01-09

'Legend' is the sound-track which Clannad composed for the HTV/Goldcrest series 'Robin of Sherwood' which was broadcast in the UK by ITV. In my opinion, those who have actually watched the series will derive the greatest enjoyment from 'Legend'. Clannad which was at the time of recording this album still comprised of Maire Brennan, her brothers Ciaran and Pol and their uncles Noel and Padraig. Clannad delivered with 'Legend' a beautiful, imaginative and evocative sound-track. 'Legend' shows off beautifully the wonderful interaction between Maire's ethereal voice and the instruments [or the instruments on their own].

Strictly within the context of the series could be enjoyed for instance tracks like: 'Robin, The Hooded Man' which accompanied the opening credits of the series and boasted as its lyrics only these four words. This track has exactly the right length, any longer and it would become monotonous. 'Herne', 'Darkmere', 'Battles' are strong instrumental pieces and evoked for me images of the series. 'Together We', 'Scarlet Inside' and 'Ancient Forest' are strong vocal tracks which conjure up more beloved memories. But the truly lovely 'Now Is Here', refined and subtle 'Lady Marian' which is dominated by the flute and Maire's harp and lastly the dark and moody 'Strange Land' could be enjoyed, in my opinion, without the context of the series.

The booklet supplies no lyrics but it does contain information about the characters of 'Robin of Sherwood', and nothing about Clannad is to be found here either.

This sound-track was my introduction to the music of Clannad and I will always cherish it!

4 out of 5 stars Robin of Sherwood.......2001-11-23

This soundtrack brings back very fond memories of the show. However even if you haven't seen the show the simple music is beautiful. The songs are good at invoking images of spring forest and the sleepy villages of yore.

      5 out of 5 stars THE Legend.......2001-09-21

This is a great, short, sweet but haunting CD, one of the rare soundtracks with original background music that you can actually listen to. It is a great soundtrack because it doesn't even sound like one. Battles is one of my favourite tracks in general and, like most of them, it is too short. One of the rare but dazzling examples of how Clannad can turn wild. Lady Marian goes together with other harp instrumentals we know like A gentle Place, Faery Queen and Fonn Mharta. It is indeed exciting to listen to so opposite moods like rage in Battles and melancholy in Strange Land. These two perfectly go together in a track Now is Here with a "folky" traditional tune not so characteristic for Clannad. I was also surprised to hear not-really-Clannad accordion in Ancient Forest. This is not a Robin Hood sountrack - it is a Clannad soundtrack.

5 out of 5 stars Modern music that evokes a noble past.......2000-11-18

Here is a collection of music played during the episodes of Robin of Sherwood. This provides a coherent theme for the album, and Clannad takes advantage of this to evoke the Britain of the 13th century. It is entirely effective, and works well even without the entrancing visual imagery of the TV show. This album, like others by Clannad, submerges you in a forest of entrancing music.
