1 out of 5 stars Poor Audio Quality.......2006-08-17

I ordered this CD after hearing a broadcast of a live performance of the same opera. I was very disappointed to find that this particular recording is of a 1961 performance that seems not to have benefited from modern audio reprocessing. Instead, it sounds like one is listening to a far-away low-quality AM radio. Too bad because current technology makes it possible to do a much better job of restoring earlier materials.

5 out of 5 stars Heroic battle!.......2006-05-10

With such strong Verdi voices in their prime it's no surprise the result is magnificent. I was especially impressed by Stella who on other recordings sounds rather matronly. As Lida her tone is more forward and the top is in pristine condition producing many exciting moments. Corelli is his usual heroic self displaying all the qualities that made him one of the most popular tenors of the 50s and 60s. My favourite performance however came from Bastianini who sounds more involved than usual and makes a strong yet thoughtful Rolando. The opera has many beautiful duets with these three and especially with the tenor and baritone and it was fantastic to hear them sing their hearts out. Maionica and the young Ferrin do justice to their minor parts and with the great Gavazzeni at the pit, this 1961 performance is easily recommended as a live alternative to the more romantic Philips recording.

3 out of 5 stars Really great, but there some strange choices.......2002-12-22

I will talk about the arias because choosing a singer depends on the personal taste. So, lets start from the very beginning - Callas and her fanous "Suicidio" - there is nothing to compare with her performance even the Caballe recording. I would gladly die after her final note. As for the "Addio del passato", for God's sake why Tebaldi - even Angela Gheorghiu is better, personally I would vote for Victoria de Los Angeles here.I agree that Caballe is a superb Mimi and somehow Hendricks isn't so captivating. As for Tosca's aria Malfitano is a goodlooking lady but then why not even Anna Moffo - if we have Price and Ricciarelli for Vissi d'arte or Kabaivanska. Terrani's Rosina is one of the best, as for the I Puritani polonaise here definitely Sutherland or Sills.Instead of Crespin I would choose de Los Angeles again. Janet Baker is a terrible Orfeo. Well buy it, nice compilation and some singers deserve the money.

4 out of 5 stars Diva-lightful.......2002-12-03

I heard this CD playing background music in second-hand bookstore and I HAD-TO-HAVE-IT. The shopkeeper couldn't tell me much about the CD except that it was called DIVA (she didn't have the cover anymore) and I knew full well that I was listening to the incomparable Dame Janet Baker singing "Che farò senza Euridice" from Gluck's Orfeo et Euridice, followed by someone else doing the famous Serse (Xerxes) Largo and an aria from Dido and Aeneas. So with that knowledge in hand, I searched Amazon.com and found this 2-CD set. And promptly purchased it.

Frankly, I adore this for the second CD alone, but there is lots to like on both CD's, such as some of my favorite divas among which are Lucia Popp, Montserrat Caballe, Fredericka von Stade and Dawn Upshaw. Some of the aria/artist choices are rather quirky; Dame Kiri Te Kanawa singing "Dich Teure Halle" instead of Birgit Nielsen; Marcella Pobbe singing "O Mio Babbino Caro" instead of Dame Kiri. Caballe not singing from La Boheme (I defy you to find a better Mimi than she) but doing Faust instead. And Sutherland and Sills are AWOL along with Nielsen--though maybe it was a case of not being able to obtain the copyrights rather than deliberate omission.

The selections here are well-chosen for variety and in the case of the bel canto selections on the second CD, they flow together so superbly, it's a real joy to hear. The only dark spot are the two arias done with the Zurich Symphony--and worse yet, they are with Lucia Popp (a huge favorite of mine) and Gruberova doing the Queen of the Night's nasty aria of extreme rage "Holle Rache". The orchestra drags in the Popp aria from "Clemenza de Tito", the dynamics are second-rate and Gruberova misses a note (not the wicked high ones but an amateurish note on an upscale.) Overall these are not the finest moments for either of these divas. That aside, there is lots to like on this CD if you overlook a couple of false notes.

3 out of 5 stars Young Opera Fan.......2002-07-22

Exactly what i was thinking. Sure these ladies are nice clear singers, but where was the Beverly Sills? Joan Sutherland? Birgit Nilsson? Being a HUGE admirer of the following I was rather shocked and disappointed to not see their arias on this c.d. Buy the c.d. knowing that it is incomplete yet still has some very nice singers-thus the 3 stars.

3 out of 5 stars who compiled these songs??.......2001-07-09

Seeing the great cover of this CD in the store with the promise of 30 great Prima Donna's was too good to be true. I can't understand why anyone would pick this compilation of artists and songs. There were some good points.. and a whole lot of bad ones too. They did have the good taste to put Maria Callas first w/ a great rendition of Suicido from La Gioconda. Unfortunately the very next song is the worst recording I've ever heard of Renata Tebaldi. Why they would choose to include a track of her singing La Traviata.. which was probably her worst role?? And lousy sound to boot. Very disappointing. I was amazed to see a few great Divas missing from this album. Where's Birgit Nilsson? Where's Beverly Sills? Where's Renata Scotto? and if they could include sumi jo.. where's Natalie Dessay?? Not only that.. it's as if they picked all of the songs worst suited for the artists presented? I recommend you skip this CD... at best you will get to hear a very differnt side of your favorite Divas as well as a whole bunch of artists who don't even deserve the title Diva.

5 out of 5 stars Like You Just Stepped Into A Salon.......2002-03-10

Opera Rara's Il Salotto series documents the salon music of the 19th century. It's a change from Opera Rara's usual heady fare, and this edition is perhaps the most light-hearted so far. It focuses on music that would have been performed by amateurs and not by the operatic stars that often were invited to the salons of the fabulously wealthy. Of the 32 songs documented here, 27 appeared in a forgotten and short-lived Neapolitan journal "Il Sibilo" from 1843-1845. Every second issue had a song by a well-known composer printed on the back page. Among the composers represented were Donizetti, Pacini, and Mercadante. Other figures such as Cammarano, Lillo, and Crescentini, who are less familiar, were also featured.

Since the songs were printed on a single page, they are very short-only a few of the tracks actually make the two minute mark. They are great fun, and demand very little of the listener. Yet they are not insubstantial as artistic accomplishments. The words and music are invariably clever, and more than one of them has the barbed point of an O. Henry story - witness the charming little melody that accompanies a wish for the singer's ex-lover to choke to death on a morsel of food, or the fervent ode to a woman's beauty that ends with an accusation of frigidity.

The singers approach these little delicacies with such enthusiasm that one can almost close one's eyes and imagine being in a warm, inviting salon surrounded by laughter, animated conversation, and of course, good music. Sopranos Nuccia Focile and Donata D'Annunzio Lombardi sing with grace and beauty while still capturing the light-heartedness and intimacy of these ditties. Paul Charles Clark is a rather whiny tenor of the Maurice Arthur ilk, but his captivating hamminess in his selections more than compensates for what he may lack in vocal beauty. Bass Ildebrando d'Arcangelo, the excellent and strikingly handsome Opera Rara regular, uses his rich and expressive voice to advantage. The pianist, David Harper, who is also featured in the other Salotto releases, continues in this series his tasteful and highly expressive accompaniment of this forgotten fare. He coaxes melodies from the keyboard with sensitivity and emotional intelligence; yet there is genuine humor and a sense of mischievous fun in his playing - which makes him the perfect choice to accompany these tongue-in-cheek pieces.

Jeremy Commons provides detailed and interesting notes, which not only discuss the fascinating history of `Il Sibilo', but also chronicle his own accidental rediscovery of the journal and these very songs in 1972. English translations and commentaries are provided on all the songs. The booklet and box are most luxurious, with beautiful, brilliantly colored art reproductions and vibrant color photography of the recording sessions in progress. Even the CD itself is embossed with the music from one of the Pacini songs. This is a sumptuous release that spares no expense, but you can listen to it in bite-sized morsels or - more likely - to the whole thing in a sitting. And you may find yourself thinking of converting a room in your own home into a salon.

For their debut recording (made in 1987), the ensemble Sinfonye put together a program focusing on (as the subtitle puts it) "the Medieval Woman: Lover, Poet, Patroness and Saint." Naturally, Sinfonye includes "A chantar m'er," the only lyric by a female troubadour (the Comtessa Beatriz de Dia) to have survived with a melody; they also include two examples of the chanson de femme, a genre that, though written by a man, depicts a female narrator lamenting the loss of her beloved to another. The centerpiece of the disc, however, is the Cantigas de Amigo by the Galician trovador Martin Codax: this six-song cycle depicts a young woman alternately lamenting the absence of her seafaring lover and celebrating his imminent return. Very little is known for certain about how or even whether these songs were accompanied by instruments; Sinfonye uses various combinations of medieval fiddle, hurdy-gurdy, harp, and drum--and even unaccompanied voice. Singer Mara Kiek, whose background is in Balkan folk singing, has a throaty, slightly rustic tone yet sings with a vivid eloquence fully worthy of the material. --Matthew Westphal

5 out of 5 stars Unusual and gorgeous.......2001-10-17

I have a big collection of early music but this recording is unique, mainly due to the vocal talents of Mara Kiek. Her slightly rough style is a wonderful foil to the primitive quality of the medieval instruments, and suggests the Middle Eastern origins of the music better than a classically trained voice would. The album as a whole is seamlessly presented, but the clear standout is the song cycle "Cantigas de Amigo," by 13th Century Galician trovador Martin Codax -- a haunting series of poems that reflect the yearning of a girl for her lover at sea. Highly recommended!

5 out of 5 stars an exotic medieval atmosphere.......2001-05-08

This album is unique , a one of a kind expirience. for a person who enjoy medieval music this one is a killer! like a dark, religiouse, sensual ritual full of exotique colors & smells. "sinfonie" succeed to create a most fasinayting interpretation of the material and the resault is very impressive! mara's voice is more like a crying gipssy then an angle but it is hypnoticly beautifull in its own way... the sounde & the playing of andrew lawrence kings harp are superb. in short, if u dig me then buy it !!! come on..... i'm waiting here beside my computer.

    5 out of 5 stars Beautiful.......2000-12-08

This was one of my first introductions to "early music." I have since bought many more, but this is still one of the best. The performances are fantastic; singing, playing, everything. The middle eastern qualities of early European music really comes out on this disc. The singing and playing have a more folky, rather than opera-like sound.

These songs are from the days when music was just starting to come out of the church and into secular society. Singing about love between a man and a woman!?! How scandalous!

I am very interested in European languages and history and I find the lyrics (also translated into English)written in medieval Provencale, French, Gallego, and Catalan particularly captivating. Booklet also contains extensive liner notes in English and French.

        Album Description

Amai is the recipient of two GLAMA (Gay and Lesbian Music Awards) awards. Shenandoah, Winner for Best Choral Performance and Draum om Nedsnodde Bruer, Kristina Boerger, Amasong's founding director, brought home the award for Best Contemporary Classical Composer. Amai taken from the final track, comes from the Shona language, spoken widely in Zimbabwe. Amai means "mother" and "woman". This theme is reflected in many of our selections, which represent a wide variety of languages, geographical locations, and historical periods. You will hear love songs to women, womens songs of lost love , personifications of natural phenomnea as women, mothers who tire of housework, children and mothers mourning the loss of one another, and prayers to the Mother Creatrix. Every track on this recording is a live performance, because we wanted to offer you an experience as close as possible to an actual concert. Even though we can clean up some of our flaws in studio sessions, we miss the inspiration we get from our audience, the community that has supported us with such love and to whom we return love through our singing. The difference in our music when our community is around us is always audible.

          5 out of 5 stars Beautiful Music..........2004-10-30

I moved to Champaign a few months ago and came across Amasong through a friend. This choir is AMAZING! I bought Amai over the summer and was stunned by their sound. Though most of the members are not "professional" musicians, they have an incredibly professional sound! I was so blown away that I went out and auditioned for the chorus and began singing with them! This is a must have for anyone who enjoys beautiful choral music!

4 out of 5 stars Beautiful songs, beautifully sung.......2003-01-04

This album has a wonderful variety of songs in many styles and languages, sung by a chorus with a very professional sound, although they are mostly non-professional singers. Although Amasong is a lesbian/feminist chorus, you don't have to fall into either of those groups to enjoy it. Kudos to their extraordinary founder/conductor, Kristina Boerger, for her wonderful choral arrangements as well as great leadership of her group.
