You want raw, electrifying, frightful, unruly, mesmerizing, aggressive, urgent, and occasionally brilliant gutbuckets of sound, listen to Jimi Hendrix's Monday morning Woodstock finale. Most of the masses had gone home, Jimi was nervous, his band unrehearsed, and the sound was as muddy as the grounds, but so what? In August of 1969, Hendrix's band, which he dubbed Gypsy Sun and Rainbows for this performance, was in a period of transition between the heavy psychedelic bluesy Experience and the more soulful, rhythmically dynamic Band of Gypsys. The two percussionists and a rhythm guitarist who augment Experience drummer Mitch Mitchell and Gypsy bassist Billy Cox are either mixed out by the engineer or drowned out by Hendrix's ferocious attack. Throughout the intense performance, finally restored here in sequential order and (almost, save for two Larry Lee vocals) in its entirety, Hendrix seems to touch on every musical style--from jazz to blues to funk to soul to metal, and even a few (fusion, punk) that weren't christened yet. A nice collection of Hendrix highlights from Woodstock.....not too many of these sort of Woodstock Highlights for individual artists exist to my knowledge...this one is a real keeper.

Get the DVD instead?.......2005-12-22

Now that a double dvd of Jimi's Woodstock gig has been released, remixed by Eddie Kramer (including a 5.1 surround mix), there's not much need for this CD, especially since the dvd set is cheaper. Just beware that the older single dvd release bears the same title as the new one; "Live At Woodstock".

one word - WOW.......2005-02-22

As I am listening to Jimi Hendrix from any of his cd's I am always amazed in some way. His guitar skills are awesome and really nobody will ever be like him again. Over 50 percent of this cd is a guitar solo which really is all chopped up and spread throughout all the songs. "Star Spangled Banner" track is a perfect example of his guitar skills. "Jam Back at the House" is also very cool because of how he changes every minute and goes into a complete different solo. Also, the songs are much longer. The regular album songs that are only 3-5 minutes on his other cd range from 5-13 minutes on this 2-disc set. "Voodoo Child" is over 13 minutes long and its played faster then the album version. Overall all the songs are great and this would be a awesome set to add to your Hendrix collection.

I don't know why the editorial review and also the little booklet say that this is not his best performance, his guitar wasn't tuned for this, or they weren't good because none of them knew what they were playing. I thought it was a awesome performance. As Jimi puts it he was just jamming. I thought that was a cool line. It was like he didn't care if the audience left or what they thought, because he was just jamming.

Woodstock The Summer Of Love With Jimi Hendrix!.......2004-09-12

Live at Woodstock was great for Jimi Hendrix, but as far as his Gypsy Sun & Rainbows Band including Juma Sultan on percussion, Larry Lee on rhythm guitar, and Jerry Velez on percussion they where way out of key as far as sound wise. Mitch Mitchell, Billy Cox, and Jimi Hendrix played great together that very last day of Woodstock. This is truely a great performence including the entire set unlike the video Woodstock. Their are endless jams on this one including Message To Love running seven minutes and twenty one seconds wow! Hear My Train A Comin running 9:49, Spanish Castle Magic 7:05, and Jam Back At The House running 7:44 wow a great jam band.

Then second set is just as great with a great performence of Voodoo Chile(slight return) running 13:40). I also loved the jams titled Woodstock Improvisation, and Villanova Junction. The funny thing about the whole concert is the last song which is in my book the worst song titled Hey Joe other than that last song this performence is really good just with the three members. Larry Lee lacks being in tune for the whole concert they really cut him out on this recording the only song you really can hear his out of tune guitar is on Spanish Castle Magic. Their is a huge booklet included with the CD that explains the whole story behind the woodstock legacy. This is truely a must have Jimi Hendrix live concert!

Simply Phenomenal, A Milestone For Hendrix and Woodstock.......2004-07-31

After the legendary previous performances at 1969's Woodstock, which included bands like Sly, the Family Stone, The Who, Santana, Joe Cocker, and the newly minted Crosby, Stills, and Nash, at 9 'O Clock on August 18th, 1969, the Jimi Hendrix Experience played Woodstock's most memorable performance, and one of the greatest of all-time. Featuring the virtuoso guitar talents of Jimi Hendrix, often hailed as the best guitarist ever, amidst bad weather and rowdy crowds the Jimi Hendrix experience played their heart out for nearly 2 and a half hours, and thankfully that concert was taped, and released for Hendrix fan's enjoyment. Below you will see how The Jimi Hendrix Experience's legendary performance at Woodstock turned out..

Track Selection-

Being new to Hendrix, I was taken on an unexpected but ultimately rewarding ride, as other than Rock N Roll classics 'Foxey Lady', 'Purple Haze' and 'Hey Joe', all the rest of these tracks were new to me. Songs such as 'Hear My Train A Comin', 'Spanish Castle Magic', 'Jam Back At The House', and 'Voodoo Child(Slight Return)' are basically examples of Hendrix's Guitar Mastery, his blistering solos encapsulating the echoes of time and talent to show he was surely a guitar god. 'Izzabella', 'Red House', 'Lover Man', and 'Villanova Junction' are all bluesy Hard Rockers that showcase magnificent musicianship, and could easily have been hits. 'Foxey Lady', 'Purple Haze', 'Hey Joe', and the minor hit 'Fire' are all thankfully included here to showcase Hendrix's biggest hits, but I wish he would have played more. Overall I think the Track Selection is excellent, and couldn't have asked for it to be any better! 5/5

Sound Quality-

For a bootleg of a concert in 1969, Jimi Hendrix Experience's performance sounds outstanding! The guitar solos and riffs blare out the speakers as if you were right there in the muddy crowd at Woodstock, Hendrix's vocals are clean, crisp, and easy to hear, and the bass and drums are clearly there and are easily hearable among the more obvious guitar. Surprisingly, some of the best Sound Quality I've ever heard from a live performance! 5/5

Band Performance-

What more can I say? Jimi Hendrix is in peak form here, his blistering solos and bluesy riffs, unknown at the time still retain their unmistakeable glory over 35 years later, and the backup band, which includes the bass and drums, dishes out a legendary performance alongside Hendrix. Basically, the Band Performance is flawless, perfect, OUTSTANDING! 5/5

Crowd Interaction-
The Jimi Hendrix Experience's concert at Woodstock boasts quite a lot of Crowd Interaction, as Hendrix usually gives a few words after every song, joking and informing throughout, and the crowd shouts often to Hendrix to 'TURN IT UP!', and it all makes for a very interesting experience!

Overall, The Jimi Hendrix Experience's performance at Woodstock is unmistakenly legendary, classic and brilliant in every way, and now stands as one of my favorite Live recordings. Since I was so impressed with this, I expect to pick up many more Hendrix albums in the next few visits to the CD store!

HIGHLY RECOMMENED TO FANS OF HENDRIX, ROCK IN GENERAL, BLUES, AND ANYBODY WHO ENJOYS LIVE RECORDINGS! SIMPLY EPIC, PHENOMENOL, BEAUTIFUL, AND DEFINITELY LOUD!

A voice that enchants listeners..........2007-01-13

The first time I saw Jane Olivor, was during a Charles Aznavour concert. He introduced her as his greatest discovery; because her melodious voice, simply enchants listners. She started to sing, and we became fans. She spoke of a movie that had captured her spirit, The Black Stallion, and from there, we bought the DVD! Now we own all her CDs, and see her whenever she is in town! Would highly recommend acquiring her CDs for a superb musical experience

I remembered loving this album years ago when it came out. Apparently my tastes have changed over the years, as I wasn't as thrilled with the CD as I remembered being all those years ago. Still, there are some good cuts and overall I would have to say it's worth listening to.

an all-time favorite .......2005-03-30

Every year or two I dig out Jane Olivor's first album, "First Night" and second album, "Chasing Rainbows" and indulge in a few days of Olivor listening. These two recordings are on my short list of all-time favorites.

Jane Olivor has an exquisite voice: strong, a bit alto operatic, melancholy, and at its best under restraint. She does a lot of French-type cabaret numbers but I like her best on the slow, sad songs. I suppose what really blows me away is the touch -- the phrasing I suppose it's called -- she can give to a single line to make it memorable. The line on this CD I can listen to over and over is "There's children you know, and that makes it so hard to go" in the song "It's all Over Goodbye." She sings this unremarkable phrase with infinite pathos.

My favorite song on the CD is "Beautiful Sadness" which is as poignant a break-up song as I've ever heard. Nobody sings a sad song better than Jane Olivor.

Forgotten gems - both the disc and the artist........2003-08-05

How do you solve a problem like Jane Olivor? When you listen to this disc (and I command that you do so!) you will inevitably ask two question? Why haven't I heard of this woman before now? and, Why isn't she more popular? Well, it will remain one of life's mysteries. Jane Olivor's "Chasing Rainbows" is a very special CD. It belongs in a very select group of CDs which should also include Art Garfunkle's "Angel Clare" and Judy Collins' "Judith." I first discovered this "album" by reading about it in "Stereo Review" - it was a 'best of the month" selection. Then I saw her on Johnny Carson. I knew I had to have that album. Twenty-six years later I'm still blown away by it. "The Big Parade," "The French Waltz," "Lalena," "It's Over Goodbye" and "Beautiful Sadness" - the vocals are tremendous. The contemporary ballads "You" and "Come in from the Rain" are very well done. "I'm Always Chasing Rainbows" is gorgeous.

Since the late '70s the Cheap Suit Serenaders--an ever-changing group of hardcore 78-collecting friends--have been playing what they love--old-time jazz, folk, string-band, Hawaiian, and ragtime music. Best known for having two of the best comix artists ever in their lineup--Robert Armstrong and R. Crumb--the Cheap Suits aren't slouches in the instrument-proficiency department (Armstrong's musical saw ended up on the One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest soundtrack, and occasional bandmate Bob Brozman has made an entire career out of touring and playing music). On Chasin' Rainbows, some of the group's finest moments are captured. Classic songs like "Persian Rug" and the title track are played alongside CSS originals like "Fine Artiste Blues." You'll never hear these fun tunes (usually relegated to CD compilations of 78s) played in a higher fidelity, nor will you probably hear them this spirited. A great resurrection of lost music by a group of guys dedicated to the stuff. --Jason Verlinde

Just terrific........2007-01-30

Although I do love this album, I have one question. Recently, I found an untitled album of R. Crumb's in my iTunes library. I have absolutely no idea what it is. There are 19 tracks and the first one is 3 minutes and 24 seconds long. If anyone can help me out in trying to figure this out, I'd really appreciate it.

Fantastic and funky.......2006-11-10

This is another great CD from Mr. Crumb et al. I am so thankful that people are still playing this music at all, let alone with the style and grace these guys have. You'll laugh and you'll marvel at the musicianship, and the vocals go perfectly with it. Their next one was even better with the addition of genius Bob Brozman. Get both!

Even more incredible than the last one!!.......2005-08-31

R. Crumb and the Cheap Suit Serenaders were an "old timey" band fronted by the legendary underground cartoonist. This CD is a reissue of their second album, originally titled "Number Two". The four band members are clearly having fun here, without taking themselves too seriously. They are playing the kind of music they like, and having a blast doing it. While they aren't really professional musicians, what they lack in technical ability, they make up for in enthusiasm. If you enjoy "old timey" music, you will enjoy this CD.

I'm a big fan of indie-rock and avante-garde jazz, but I can't deny a serious affinity for good down-home music like this. This band of misfits, dorks and comic-book geeks has got the right idea when it comes to playin' some 'toons (pun intended). The atmosphere of this music is silly, goofy, slightly perverse and deeply sincere. If you liked the music from "Oh Brother where art thou", but thought the movie was inauthentic and a bit shallow, you should give this a listen. This is the real deal.

Finally, some REAL music. It had been a long time since I had heard such sincere and rustic musical farcities. Although Robert Crumb is "way out there", his handling of his short stab at the music game proves that if you have a dream, you can"t be all bad. Nice cello parts from Terry Zwigoff. "Persian Rug" has got to be one of the best of the best. Buy it, you'll like it!

I Love This Album.......2007-04-07

I went to Hawaii last year and heard this group on The Pineapple Express at the Dole Plantation. I loved their singing and wanted more. This album is great and I plan to purchase more of Na Leo - their harmonies are a wonderful blend. Musicians will love them!

Revamped and reissued.......2002-04-08

Collectables Records has reworked their "History of Rock" compilation series, supposedly using remastered sources. The track listing remains the same, however the packaging is new. There can be some confusion about titles in this series as Collectables changes the packaging for specific radio station markets in addition to selling their generic version of the title. The reworked version of this volume sports a red border with most of the front image being a picture of a 50s-era teenager playing 45s in front of a group of dancers, probably, one of whom sports a pair of argyle socks not to be believed. (Note: it is unclear as to whether you receive this new version if ordered from Amazon.com as their product description still displays the old packaging. It may be advisable to inquire until and unless Amazon updates the image.) Collectables has had a less than enviable record when it comes to production quality in their reissues. Here, they have done a better job than has often been the case in the past. Additionally, they indicate on the outside of the back of the package which tracks are presented in stereo, a helpful bit of information provided it is accurate but sorry to say it is not totally so on this volume. I purchased this volume to a large degree for what is indicated on the package as a stereo version of Dion and the Belmonts' "Where or When", a tune I once found in true stereo on a poor-quality one-off disc years ago but have never seen again on any high-quality Dion CD. My disappointment was substantial when I discovered that this track is in mono and the previous track, "Love Makes The World Go Round" is in stereo but not indicated as such on the package. True, a minor slip-up, but still frustrating and the reason for a three-star rating in my book. While this is a mainstream series and there are no rarities or first-timers to CD in amongst the tracks appearing here, at least there are a couple that are not the same old ones usually found compiled for major hit collections. This volume sports the essentially one-hit wonder Troy Shondells' "This Time", along with Frank Ifield's "I Remember You" with the added bonus of it being the stereo (albeit somewhat awkward 2-channel) version, a first time on CD to my knowledge. Overall, the sound quality here is respectable, with a plus being the appearance of the very rare stereo version of the Paradons' "Diamonds and Pearls" and the aforementioned "I Remember You". On the down side, "Liar Liar" is pretty hissy and there are, unfortunately, dropouts in the stereo track of "Diamonds and Pearls". One other, to this listener, uncomfortable thing here is the sequence at the end of the disc with the frenetic "Liar Liar" being followed by the soothing and melodic "Stranger On The Shore", a track that would have segued better around "Where Or When" or "I Remember You". The liner notes booklet provides a few comments on the included tracks but has no other track details or production credits. For the casual listener interested in the tracks presented, this is a somewhat better than average effort and for the collector, it does offer a that one rarely found stereo version. If only the labeling about the stereo had been correct...

Not enough songwriting or musicianship to make this more than 3 stars, but it is fun. All tracks from '66-'68.
These songs make The Beatles sound like Black Sabbath.

Indulge Your Sweet Tooth.......2006-02-15

These are the kind of quaint, cotton-candy numbers that tin-pan-alley tunesmiths cranked out for the AM-radio teen idols of the sixties and seventies. Though the individual songs vary in quality, the CD as a whole provides the perfect soundtrack for a kid's poolside tea party in sunny California, complete with marble-eyed stuffed animals, kaleidoscope pinwheels, and red Kool Aid. When I was super tiny, I spent enough time sitting on the vinyl back seats of my mom's LTD Ford daydreaming to twee pop like this for it to leave an impression. It's fluff, but it's a sweet taste.

Most EP's are just a collection of singles, it's totally rare to get one that's contains new music, Ronnie's 'She Talks To Rainbows' is simply wonderful, one wonders what a full length cd would've contained, Ronnie's unique voice just shines on this!, great musicians and arrangements gives you that classic Ronettes sound updated with a rock edge, this is a great addition to any fan of the girl group sound.

Joey Ramone and Ronnie Spector were made for each other. What a perfect match.

This is such a wonderful concoction. Don't be surprised, the punk/ new wave acts from the 1970's worshipped the ground of Ronnie Spector. They all loved her.

Ronnie should be pushed to do more rock and stripped down musical projects. Her voice is so powerful that she does not need an overproduced and busy sound.

"Bye Bye Baby" a duet with Joey Ramone, "You Cant put your arms around a memory" a Johnny Thunders tune, " this is pure heaven. Every song has the Ronnie Spector trademark sound but with a very contemporary instrumentation.

This is a brief 5 song ep. It definetly is not enough but at the same time it wisely makes you crave more from this type of project. Too bad it will never be possible.

Joey Ramone really understood Ronnie Spector better than anybody in the last 30 years.

I always take this cd when I go on trips. I find it comforting. Everyone else has pretty much said all I could say so I will just say this. If you like Ronnie and you don't own this you are just foolish...and missing out!

Sure, I could write about the colourful history of Ronnie Spector. I could talk about her divorce, her court battles, the Ronettes... who cares? Here is Ronnie's voice. Need I say more? It doesn't matter what the songs are, every single one will send shivers down your spine when Ronnie's voice kicks in. Many have come and gone trying to sound like her. She is still here. All sex. All raw. All raspy.

Best Among The Expanded Array Of Leslie Gore CDs.......2007-07-31

For the longest time the only CD available covering her hits was the Mercury release The Golden Hits Of Lesley Gore. It was nice to see more and more coming onto the market the past few years for this highly- underrated singer, and this one from Rhino is easily the best.

From tracks 1 to 14, and 17 and 18 it repeats the contents of the above-mentioned CD, but then adds four that were not easily obtainable before in a quality CD. These are: I Won't Love You Anymore (Sorry) which reached # 80 Hot 100 in 1965; Start The Party Again from her 1966 LP Lesley Gore Sings All About Love; Summer And Sandy, a # 65 Hot 100 in the summer of 1967; and Brink Of Disaster, her last Hot 100 which hit # 82 in the fall of 1967.

Lesley would also have two Adult Contemporary-only hits, the first coming in 1969 when a medley of 98.6 and Lazy Day reached # 36, and the other in 1970 when Why Doesn't Love Make Me Happy topped out at # 39 - her last hit single. The former is currently available only in an expensive box set, while the latter does not appear to be included in any of the CDs currently available.

During her career three of her hits also crossed over to the R&B charts, a good illustration of her widespread appeal [It's My Party, Judy's Turn To Cry, and She's A Fool - nos. 1, 10, and 28 respectively], and she was backed by some of the biggest names in orchestras at that time, among them Claus Ogerman, Don Costa, Alan Lorber, Jack Nitzsche, and Hutch Davie. All this is detailed in the insert where you also get a discography of the contents, and seven pages of background notes by Richard Henderson to go along with several more nice shots of Lesley.

As James Austin of Rhino A&R says in an opening statement "would you believe that the same person who celebrated '60s teen angst with It's My Party and Judy's Turn To Cry was a fan of such jazz singers as Chris Connor and June Christy? Well, it's true." That comes across clearly in several tracks, but especially 14. Recommended.

Rhino Records does it again!.......2005-04-08

Rhino and Hear Music are the best labels out there today. Period. The packaging, the liner notes, the photos, and their niche in the music industry have proven time and time again that a quality "greatest hits" package can be done well.

Lesley Gore was pure bubblegum pop of the times. The production with the likes of a Mr. Quincy Jones, combined with excellent song talent date stamp most of this period perfectly. The collection is great, and the packaging makes the voyage back to this time more special.

If you want a greatest hits comp that is done well, remastered perfectly, and packaged in a mature, sophisticated way. This is it. Excellent bargin too. Well done Rhino. Thanks!

Good selection.......2005-01-24

With so many albums to select from, I chose this for the title and a selection that I could relate to. In the case of Lesley it would be impossible not pick something of her best. You will find each song has a different pace and still have the sound that makes it Lesley.

Unless you are making a Gore collection this album will do fine as an example of the person and time. However for me is much more as I lived through the era and each song bring back a memory. I spent a few California Nights on the beach in the 60's. Of course there were other singers of the time and they were more popular. Yet I would not count on them as substitutes for the uniqueness of Lesley Gore.

A collection you can live without....lots of mediocre filler.......2004-11-10

No one will deny that this New York City native made some pretty peppy and enjoyable pop music in the early to mid 1960's. Under the watchful eye of talented producers like Quincy Jones, Shelby Singleton and Bob Crewe, Lesley Gore made an immediate impact on the pop charts with smash hits like "It's My Party", "Judy's Turn To Cry" and "You Don't Own Me". But as it turned out these three chartbusters from 1963 turned out to be the pinnacle of Lesley Gores career. And while she continued to hit the charts on a regular basis for the next four years she would never again have a Top Ten record.
In 1998, Rhino released "Sunshine, Lollipops and Rainbows: The Best of Lesley Gore." Listening to this collection made it clear to me why her career began to decline as the sixties progressed. For one thing, "It's My Party" was and remains one of the most overplayed songs on the radio. I cringe when I hear it and even today I change the station when that tune comes on. I cannot argue that Lesley continued to make a few pretty darn good records in 1964 and 1965. I always loved "Maybe I Know" and most especially "Look of Love" from 1964 and her big hit from the summer of '65 and the title cut of this collection "Sunshine, Lollipops and Rainbows." Unfortunately as time went by there would me more and more forgettable releases. This collection includes a few too many of those for my taste. In 1967, Lesley Gore recorded her last big hit "California Nights". I have always felt it was her best record and I expected bigger and better things from her. But it never happened. After a couple of more minor hits Lesley Gore would vanish from the Billboard charts forever.
Whenever I rate an anthology I try to use as a major criterion if there was ever a reason for me to listen to the entire CD. In this case the answer is an emphatic NO! I have no arguments with Rhino here. They did a nice job putting this one together but in my judgement a bit less Gore would have been better than more Gore.

Lesley Gore: the Sixties Queen of Adolescent Yearning.......2003-06-07

I saw Lesley Gore described as a "one-hit wonder," and while she hit #1 with her very first release "It's My Party" in 1963, she was had a lot more hits. Her follow-up song, "Judy's Turn To Cry" made it to #5 that same year and in 1967 she made it back to the Top 20 with "Sunshine, Lollipops & Rainbows" and "California Nights." You should not be surprised because Leslie Gore was one of the dominant female singers associated with the "girl group" sound in the early 1960s, who had Quincy Jones producing most of her early sessions and doing double-track vocals of songs written by Gerry Goffin & Carole King, Ellie Greenwich & Jeff Barry, and Marvin Hamlisch. In addition to the three aforementioned hits there's "Maybe I Know," "I Don't Wanna Be a Loser," "She's a Fool," "that's the Way Boy's Are," and the song that should endear Gore to the proto-feminists, "You Don't Own Me." The result is that Gore was as commercially successful a female solo singer as there was on the face of the planet during this period. Obviously we are not talking about the lady singing soul, but while other practitioners of the angst of adolescent yearning would come and go (e.g., Shelley Faberas and "Johnny Angel"), Gore personified the idea for several profitable years. The problem was that "It's My Party" and "Judy's Turn to Cry" started Gore out with the image of a whinny teenybopper and when you consider her entire catalogue those songs do not define the mainstream of her work which goes in the other direction as this hits collection amply proves. There are several equally strong Lesley Gore hits collections out there, but this one is from Rhino and you know they go the extra yard in putting these things together.

This cd collection is worth it to hear the Dialtones, which consisted of the Safuto brothers, a cousin Eddie Scalla, and their lead, Rosalie Calindo. Bohemian Daddy is my favorite track, it makes me forget the Rainbows, sad to say, because this is a cool recording (despite its acetate, deteriated sound). The cd has a few rough sounding recordings... BUT IT'S BETTER THAN NOTHING! If you are a serious historian of oldies, buy it!
