Piffaro discs make this sedentary fool want to get up and dance. Renaissance dance music is a much-underrated source of general delight, anyway. You don't have to be the kind of specialist listener who loves medieval masses to get a kick out of this tasty, highly rhythmic music--the disco of an earlier era. The tunes are appealing, the sounds of the varied instruments consistently delightful. I rate discs of Renaissance dances not so much by their authenticity, a debatable matter anyway, but rather by their danceability. Piffaro discs rank consistently high in this respect, and they are realistically recorded. --Leslie Gerber

This is truly one of the best albums of Renaissance music currntly available! Purely instrumental! Much of it appears to be music for a royal court event or the like, with much use of brass and wind instruments. There are also many selections for the festival setting, usually involving the bagpipes and hurdy-gurdy. Too many albums of ancient music "pad" the content with monotonous choral polyphonic selections, perhaps starting out with one or two really good instrumental pieces. However, they did not do that in this one!

'Piffaro The Renaissance Band' is a Philadelphia group who has done several superior albums of Renaissance music for the label 'Archiv', late of Deutche Grammaphone, now part of Polygram. I was astonished when I heard from a student of one of the directors, Robert Wiemken, that the band is paid virtually nothing to make the record and have it distributed. While I would expect that from a minor label, it is surprising that an act should make it to Deutche Grammaphone and not be paid for their recording. I go into this minor digression because I am especially impressed by this recording and all their others as well.

I do take issue with it's being labelled a recording of 'wind' music, as there is ample representation from the family of string instruments, most famously the guitar and the hurdy gurdy.

Although I really enjoy 'old music', I'm not an expert on it, but I set out to distinguish this music from modern stuff, and the two I can find are the presence here of a lot of drone instruments such as the bagpipe and the hurdy gurdy and the absence of instruments such as the clarinet which give us that lushly woody tenor we hear in pieces such as 'Rapsody in Blue' or in some of Kurt Weill's German stage pieces. We also certainly miss the rich sounds of the piano, as the pianoforte has not been invented yet.

If you like old music, this band is a 'must hear'!

I wish composers were still writing for hurdy-gurdy @ crumhorn...what a wonderful sound. I especially liked "La Parma". I do believe a modern tunesmith has taken that melody @ recently made a rather haunting popular song from it; a female vocalist, I think. If anyone out there can remember what the name of that modern tune is @ will post it here, it will save me some on-going mental annoyance. You won't go wrong in buying this album!

This CD has me dancing in the streets. I have played holes in the recording. The musicianship is extraordinary with excitement, love and a great warm sense of pleasure taken by everyone involved. Renaissance instruments are not generally known for subtlety or nuance, but these players work miracles. The percussion sections are also integral to the whole and thrilling, where appropriate. Piffaro, please keep your music coming.

    I am fairly new to classical music and have depended heavily on reviews to select what CDs to try. I ordered this newly-released one based on the contents and am very happy I did. The music is sharp and clear. When it swells to a dramatic moment, it takes your breath away! Featuring the masterful palying of E. Power Biggs and Anthony Newman among others, this 2 CD set is a great value for the price!

    This two-disc set completes Sequentia's ambitious project to record the complete musical works of Abbess Hildegard von Bingen to commemorate the 900th anniversary of her birth in 1098. In this last release, Sequentia finally takes on some of the most recognizable pieces from "A Feather on the Breath of God," the legendary recording by Gothic Voices that began the Hildegard boom 15 years ago. While you can't say that the older recording has been superseded, this one holds its own quite nicely. Where Gothic Voices took a no-nonsense approach to rhythm, making all notes more-or-less equal in length, Sequentia sings with its typical rhythmic freedom--without slipping into the rhapsodic excess that sometimes marred their earlier Hildegard discs; the momentum and shape of melody are always clear. Speaking of rhapsody, Sequentia's co-director Barbara Thornton opens the recording with a transporting rendition of a Hildegard hymn to "God the Father." --Matthew Westphal

    My first introduction to Sequentia's versions of Hildegard was Canticles of Ecstacy, which still best defines musically, for me, the soaring visions and mysticism of Hildegard. Much of this sense is to be credited to the female voices of Sequentia, not only exceptional in quality but specifically not "sweet" or self-conscious or hovering toward modern, as in other ensembles (e.g., Gothic Voices or Anonymous 4). Beautiful as these latter voices are, one can take exception to the "angelic" label if one remembers that medievals saw angels as both terrifying and beatiful, and Sequentia evokes the awe and strength of angelic sounds like no one else (to my knowledge) recording Hildegard. Happily, the female voices in Saints are as soaring, challenging and beautiful as ever.

    Though entirely correct historical scholarship, Saints has more male voices than female (separate, of course); the men's ensemble, called Sons of Thunder, is as strong and persuasive as any male performers of medieval vocal, and parallel the women's voices in removing any trace of self-consciousness. But while they are excellent, the male tones will be reminiscent of traditional Gregoran chant, of ecclesiastical music, not quite capturing the soaring mysticism of the female voices. Perhaps this is "built-in" to the two voices and their personalities. But I, for one, prefer the female voices, especially when Saints is meditative music for non-active listening.

    Instrumental interludes, composed by a Sequentia member, are refreshingly authentic and quite welcome in the progress of the discs. They are carefully crafted to the sense of Hildegard's compositions and another reason why Sequentia's versions are unsurpassed.

    Mystical and etheral, this music has become my favorite during quiet meditation or contemplation. It seems to speak directly to that part of us which strives to transend the static of physical existence, and longs to know the infinite.

    I purchased this album largely from wanting more of the sparse instrumental arrangements and sense of space offered in Loreena McKennitt's early work. I have not been at all disappointed. The booklet contains informative notes , which is especially valuable considering the diverse origins of most of the melodies offered here; the sources of this music go far beyond the 'Celtic' harp of the title. Not to 'harp' on the McKennitt thing again, but if you enjoyed her early albums and have not been so thrilled by the over-produced, world-music-conglomerate feel of her later efforts, I think this CD will have much to offer you.

    There are two basic reasons to purchase recordings by choral groups:
    1. For personal listening enjoyment
    2. For demonstration purposes

    As a director of Junior and Senior High choirs, I needed a clear, correct performance of "Ceremony of Carols". This recording served my purpose well. As a matter of fact, it serves both reasons I've given; it pleases ME with the additional selections by a fine choir as well as provides the perfect example of 'how to sing' these Britten beauties for my young people.

    This is really a combination of two cd's on one. The first part combines the Christ Church Cathedral Girls' Choir with the Boys' Choir of the Christ Church Cathedral Choir of Men and Boys. The experience in these two groups rivals those of any choir in the world despite all being under age 18. Their voices combine beautifully on the wide range of emotions in Britten's Ceremony of Carols. To say it is heavenly would be an understatement.

    The second half of this cd features the Men of the Choir of Men and Boys. Singing the lower three parts (alto, tenor, and bass, one is transported to the Middle Ages and the monastaries of England and Europe. The lusty singing of these less familiar Christmas carols illustrates the one time a year the monks allowed themselves to be human.

    I highly recommend this CD for any lover of Benjamin Britten and for any person looking for an alternative to the standard Christmas fare.

    If you enjoy sounds that are truly beautiful , pleasant and do in fact help the mind "slip through the veil of time", than Ancient Realms surely fits these sort of sounds. It is a wonderful CD and Jennifer Pratt-Walter is a truly gifted artist.

    I have thoroughly enjoyed listening to Jennifer's CD. The music inspires me when I am creating and completing various quilting proejcts. My best times to work on my projects is early in the morning and this music allows me to wake up peacefully - a great way to start my day. The music has just the right touch to brighten up my insides and allows the freedom to explore my artistic side! Of an evening, this CD has just the right touch of music flow to allow me to think about the day - a perfect way to relax and reflect.

        There's something for everyone here--Songs about the Sea, about highwaymen, about gods and paradise. Both traditional songs and original music and lyrics. All performed by very nice mix of strong and individualistic vocalists accompanied by a variety of instruments. I can listen to this CD for hours, even days at a time, as it both soothes and relaxes and then excites and makes me dream of adventures and other lands. If you like any element of what I've mentioned (folk, celtic music, traditional, original compositions, old and new instruments, great vocals, rousing ballads, slightly new-agey ethereal ballads), you'll like this CD. I also like: Loreena McKennitt, Clannad, Peter Murphy, The Cure, Oingo Boingo, Phantom of the Opera...

        Avalon Rising is a great Oakland-based band who do music that ranges from Celtic to rock, and home to Medieval via the southern route. They have their first CD out -- I am listening to it as I write these words. Singer Margaret Davis has style and taste not unlike Loreena McKennitt's. The five members play a generous selection of conventional instruments, both electric and manual, plus Celtic harp, recorders, mandolin, and a large collection of interesting percussive devices, including a very mean bodhran. All do vocals. The music is full of rhythm and movement. Much of it is composition or arrangement by one band member or another. Let me mention some of the cuts. The rendition of "The Great Selkie" is marvelous -- splashing harp and thrumming bodhran wonderfully evoke the ebb and flow of surf; the first time I heard this one live I involuntarily looked down to be sure my feet weren't getting wet. "Andray Soulet", an arrangement of a 15th-century composition, seems a French round with a hint of North African rhythm, and "Contre le Tens/Toda Cousa" presents two 13th-century works with voice and instruments. "Dark Moon Circle", a get-up-and-dance song, begs for a sweetly-scented bonfire on a wild and glimmering night, while "God Walks Among Us" addresses religious themes in a more traditional style. The next-to-last title, "Reborn", is a contemporary love song with a fast beat. All in all, great stuff!
