The Pirate Queen, with a score by Alain Boublil and Claude-Michel Schönberg (Les Misérables, Miss Saigon), took a critical beating when it opened on Broadway, but as this catchy cast recording demonstrates, that reception was really unnecessarily harsh. Set in the 17th century, the show (which closed after only 85 performances) tells the story of Grace O'Malley (Stephanie J. Block), an Irish ship captain and pirate who defied Queen Elizabeth I (Linda Balgord). The combination of that setting with the fact that the producers also brought us Riverdance means an overall Celtic flavor. But fans of Boublil and Schönberg should not fear. The duo delivers plenty of the over-the-top, super-emotional power ballads they're famous for--it's hard not to wonder what Celine Dion would make of songs such as "Woman" or "I'll Be There" (the latter sung by a man, but no matter!). Special kudos to Balgord, whose deliciously campy stage portrayal of Elizabeth I comes across well on "The Waking of the Queen," "The Role of the Queen," and two harpsichord-driven, vibrato-laden duets with Block, "She Who Has All" and "Woman to Woman." Also of note to fans of traditional singing is the participation of Áine Uí Cheallaigh (known from Riverdance) on several tracks. --Elisabeth Vincentelli

4 out of 5 stars Boublil & Schonberg's Newest Creation.......2007-08-03

How do you follow such internationally sucessful shows like Les Miserables and Miss Saigon? Well, with Martin Guerre of course. Sadly that particular show, despite being re-written and relaunched a couple of times failed to be the success it was hoped. Now, I really liked that show, especially before it was revamped BUT it just wasn't to be. So we now have Boublil & Schonberg's latest offering with The Pirate Queen. I think that if you liked the previous three scores you can't fail to enjoy this new show. It certainly has some great "show stoppers", some wonderful "duets" and exciting dance interludes. Whereas in Martin Guerre we had the more authentic and rustic villagers dancing we now have a more Riverdance and Celtic feel in line with the Irish story and links. In fairness there is feeling of having heard it before and some themes do seem reminiscent of the previous shows BUT isn't that true of other successful composers?

Overall, a worthwhile addition to your collection if not up to the Les Miz and Saigon standards. Having played it several times now it certainly improves each time you hear it. I am very happy to recommend this recording especially now that the show has finished and we may not have the chance of seeing it again....... who knows? Watch this space though!

4 out of 5 stars NOT THE BEST, BUT STILL BRILLIANT.......2007-08-02

I read the reviews before purchasing this CD, and seeing as they were so mixed, I decided to just get it and see for myself after listening to samples of the tracks.

I was really glad I did. I have a keen musical ear and a discriminatory musical palate, and I'm usually pretty good at judging things by their covers (even though I know I shouldn't). I was utterly pleased with this musical after listening to it twice. It gets four stars for not blowing me away like some musicals can on the first listening (Les Miserables is a great example). But the point is that it gets all of those four stars.

Irish/Celtic music usually begins to irritate me after I listen to it for a while. It's nice, it's pleasant, but it's not my cup of Earl Grey tea. But the blend of Schonberg's and Boubil's distinct style of musical (made popular by their other work) with the more natural/historical sound of Great Britain blends well. I feel that if this musical had not appeared on Broadway with all the hype surrounding Pirates of the Caribbean releasing it's third installment, that this musical would have garnered more respect, instead of the mass populace thinking, as I believe, "oh, another pirate thing." I am sad that I get the chance to go to see a show in late September in NYC, and this one's already gone - the only one I really want to see.

The money's worth it for a few of the tracks by themselves. Namely, "Woman", "I Dismiss You", "Surrender", and surprisingly, the "Entr'acte". Others have stated in their reviews that they don't like "Boys'll Be Boys" as it's so utterly expected in the tradition of a "Master of the House" song. You know what? Who cares. I think "Boys'll be Boys" as well as "Rah-Rah, Tip-Top" are entertaining for the ears, and every musical has its form of comic relief - though I must say, both songs are dark comedy focusing around characters who are chauvinists. I haven't yet got that spin on Thenardier, as despicable and delightful as he was in Les Miserables. Though initially it's hard to understand some of the Queen's pieces, the feeling of the absolute monarch comes cleanly through, and the harpsichord background is not cliche. It's perfect in those pieces.

I urge other people who are considering buying this to check out these reviews, but judge it for yourselves, and don't start listening to it with expectations. Rather, just sit back and enjoy the show.

5 out of 5 stars Broadway not Chicago.......2007-07-31

This album is good. If you saw the Original production, Pre-Broadway in Chicago, you will notice the differences that the show acquired for its Broadway production. It is a good representation of a show that appears to have lost its luster when moving from the Windy City to the Big Apple. My kids I I listen to the album over and over and cannot get enough of it.

5 out of 5 stars CLASSIC MUSICAL.......2007-07-30

An excellent recording of the Broadway production. This show has a strong storyline and the music is superb! Having seen the show in New York the week before it closed, I really can't understand why this wasn't another long-runner for Boublil and Schonberg. It was a disgrace that it didn't receive any Tony award nominations. At least, we have this recording to savour of a classic musical, which hopefully will have a future in the UK.

5 out of 5 stars Unsinkable Pirate Queen.......2007-07-30

Loved the show and the extremely talented cast! Now I can "Sail to the Stars" whenever I want.

Resembling at times a soft-sung Robert Plant, Buckley was an intuitive vocalist capable of dizzying arabesques and choir-boy sweetness. He is joined here by a tight band for 10 tracks highlighting his stylistic range--Pearl Jam bluesy on "Eternal Life," impossibly serene on Leonard Cohen's "Hallelujah," art-school noisy on "So Real," Led Zep daring on "Mojo Pin." Unorthodox, this was the debut of '94. --Jeff Bateman

5 out of 5 stars Jeff Buckley fan.......2007-07-12

A friend turned me on to Jeff Buckley music and am now a fan. His sound is so good and haunting. Even though his life was cut so short, his music lives on forever.

5 out of 5 stars Greatest Male Solo Album of all Time : A Masterpiece.......2007-06-14

The reason why this is actually the greatest male solo album of all time, is because no other album on earth has such a perfect harmony of so many genres of music - rock, pop, jazz, neo-soul, and even sufi melodies.

I can safely say that twenty years from now, "Grace" will be hailed as probably the most important cultural document arising out of the rock movement of the 1900s. The passion here is more palpable that anything put out by say, The Beatles or Eric Clapton (geniuses in their own right). Its one thing to here people say "Oh, this is the greatest album ever!" and "Best Album of all time!", or when fans go "This makes the entire catalog of The Rolling Stones look like kindergarten!" - but that, dear reader, is the happy reality of this album - its better than almost all of the artists mentioned above. It really is.

If you're new to Jeff Buckley, heres a quick rundown of what this album actually sounds like - take a 27 year old boy-man with a soaring, beautiful, jazz-suited voice, and hear him sing touching slow-rock songs, and some unlikely covers ("Lilac Wine" by Nina Simone, "Hallelujah" by Leonard Cohen). The voice is the instrument here. Production is flawless. He can sound like a little girl whose hearts' been broken for the first time, or a 70 year old singing from wisdom and experience - all on one song. If that isn't amazing, what is?

For years now, I've held that Tori Amos' "Scarlet's Walk" is the greatest album ever recorded. Well, musically and conforming to my tastes, I'd have to say that the Amos album still ranks high on my list. But I listened to "Grace" when it first released in 1994, and its been a friend to me since then. What an experience that was, me as a gangly 17 year old with headphones on to shut the rest of the world of - Jeff Buckley was easy to idolize when you're that age, but what I didn't count on was this album becoming a permanent fixture in my life even in my thirties. I guess `timeless' would be the word, but I don't want to use adjectives here that I would use for just any other album.

Many Tori Amos fans seem to love this album as well, even though Tori is a completely different sort of performer. While Amos sings primarily of life through her eyes (fair enough), Buckley reaches out to you and sings about YOUR life, which is something that not many singer-songwriters are capable of doing.

If you haven't heard this before, lucky you! I can only imagine the goosebumps you're gonna get when you slide this CD into your player and hear the opening verse of "Mojo Pin", Track 1. The title track is a bonafide classic, but its on "Lilac Wine" that this album finally finds its wings and soars. How can a human voice sound like this, you ask yourself. If heaven was packaged in a three minute track on a CD, this would be it. Nothing can come close, and if the original songwriter were alive today I can only imagine his amazement at what it has been transformed to in Buckley's hands. Another ancient lyrics "Corpus Christi Carol" is just as stunning.

Jeff Buckley died in 1997. Since then, this album has been hailed as a classic, but I find this to be quite cheap and derogatory, because its too easy to hail something once an artist is dead. I mean, I did like Nirvana, but lost all interest in them after their catalog was plundered and sold out to commercial gain upon Kurts' death. Thankfully, that hasn't quite happened to Jeff (though we have had a few posthumous releases, not of the magnitude of Nirvana, however), because Jeff was only starting his career and there wasn't a whole lot available to readily release. His estate, now in his mothers' hands, have released some Live albums, a double-CD of his unfinished work, and a DVD, but nothing compares to "Grace" which is the only album he released in his lifetime.

You know, in this world, its hard to find a thing of beauty that retains its' power and hold over you. Friends come and go, relationships fade away, and family sometimes isn't all its cut out to be. I find that music has been my sole companion through most of lifes' ups and downs, and "Grace" has been a constant support. In times of highs or lows, all I need to do is to listen to "Lilac Wine" or "Eternal Life" and its' as if fresh new liquid energy is being poured into me by some divine entity (well, the experience is other-worldly, for sure). But more than that, it's a thing of wonder that a record soon celebrating fifteen years of release has been a constant soundtrack to my life, mirroring my moods and emotions, and being the best friend through it all. For this, I can only thank Buckley. I bet even he didn't know what he was creating.

The new version of "Grace" is entitled the "Legacy Edition" and I highly recommend you get that over the single-CD version. Yes, the single CD version is what Jeff released originally, but this new version, supervised by his mother, is what I now consider the most essential version of this album. Its my No. 1 Desert island disc (over Amos' Scarlet's Walk" in its' current form). The second disc, in my opinion is not `better' than the first disc, its just `different'.

The most beautiful new track here is the shimmering ballad "Forget Her", which had been spoken of for years, but now that we have it, it exceeds our expectations. This has got to be the most underrated rarity of all Buckley's work. There is also the long `Kanga Roo', and the amazing `Mama, you be on my mind'. I must say though, that the second disc, save for Track 1, has a rougher, edgier sound, but at no point do these sound like `demos' or `cheap live recordings' as many people assume them to be. In fact, even though it probably didn't go through the multi-layered studio instrumentation as the first disc did, the second is just as well produced and impeccably put together, and is a worthy addition to the catalog. For those of us who were fans of the original CD, this new Legacy Edition is the most glorious musical occasion in recent memory.

The Legacy Edition, while bestowing the album with the greater respect it deserves, also offers us a DVD with all Jeff's official music videos, with a documentary thrown in as well. This definitive 3-Disc package is the way to go, if you need to get "Grace".

Throughout my life, I've always been fascinated and felt kinship toward Buckley due to his obsession and love for Sufism and the Qawwali genre of music. He was a follower of Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan, and in fact, one of Nusrat's posthumous releases is even dedicated to Buckley. While "Grace" does not have any songs of this nature, I find that Buckley's voice is strangely very "exotic" sounding in places, almost as if he were channeling a Moslem preacher from the wilds of the Afghan highlands (I'm sure Jeff would consider this a compliment). Listen to this album again, and note what I'm saying here - his voice is just so adaptable and I think that he channels Nusrat in more than a few places on this record. Now, this is a fabulous experience, and I only understood the relevance of this years later, when I read an interview that Buckley did with Nusrat during a US tour. Jeff also lists Patti Smith (one of my musical gurus) as one of his icons (he even toured with her at one point), and her influence upon his music is quite evident (traces of her debut album are present through strains of "Grace").

Let me not mince words - "Grace" is the best thing to happen to the world of music, since, well... ever. This is one album that not many people know about, but those who do most certainly live a charmed life upon possession of this record. If your musical inclinations and `best-ofs' lie with "Abbey Road" and "The White Album", well, what can I say. You've certainly missed out on what is obviously the true blueprint for what music ought to be based on. This is genre bending, music-revolutionizing stuff here, and you should do yourself a favor and just buy this.

I would also highly recommend the new Legacy Edition of "Live at Sin-E", which is actually Jeff's first album. It was released early on as an EP, and now has been extended into a mega two-hour event. What a treat! Other than the usual tracks, the standout for me on this record is "Yeh Jo Halka Halka Suroor Hain", which was incidentally the first song by Khan that Jeff ever heard. I would say that if you're reading this review, check out the link above to this Live set, and add to your cart. I know that it's a pretty obvious endorsement, but I'd really like you to get both these Legacy Edition records and listen to them. These are records you NEED to own.

To sum things up, what we have here is the Greatest Male Solo Record of all time. It breaks new ground, reinvents a whole new genre, and introduces you to the most beautiful male voice I have ever heard. I cannot recommend this album highly enough.

If Music were Religion, consider this your Bible.

Five Stars - Jeff Buckley, you will be missed.

4 out of 5 stars These boots were made for..........2007-05-19

Jeff Buckley was a musical firebomb. He had a slow burn and a long comet like wake throughout his career. He had a nearly 'perfect' range as shown on Crusade era carols and mixed jams like 'Mojo Pin' and 'So Real'. To hear him whisper, 'I'm afraid....I'm afraid to love you,' is to hear beautiful resonate through sound- it was emotive, raw, shimmery, and sensual. The CD is the only full effort produced by Buckley encompassing the title of: complete album. Every other compilation was either unfinished (My Sweetheart the Drunk, revised and fretted over and then Buckley drowned) or it was a piecemeal of other recordings either caught live or pored over in remnants. However, one thing remains standard: Jeff Buckley was a tremendous vocalist with a gift for the dramatic, the flair of artistry, and although he drowned (following a familial confession of depression) his music rises from the fathoms as a beacon for real talent. If only he hadn't gone so soon.

5 out of 5 stars Perfection........2007-05-17

If I had to pick one CD to take with me to a far off deserted island, this would be it. His version of "Hallelujah" is now considered definitive, with good reason, too. If this CD doesn't move you it's a pity because you are missing out on something truly wonderful.

5 out of 5 stars the most genuine of albums.......2007-04-15

Grace, as the first (and only) fully completed record by jeff buckley, is, as a whole, the most beautiful musical endevour i have ever run across. it's dense and addictive and haunting. his melodic sense is completely his own. the origional songs on grace are beautiful but not yet altogether defined, or at least that's how i interpret it now, having listened to the album hundreds of times. but that density and still forming quality is increadibly appealing to my youth. his words resonate.
the album sticks together as a whole. his voice is beautiful, peircing, his range awe-inspiring. the bare simplicity of Haleluja is so beautiful as to be physically painful. Dream Brother is completely haunting and leaves me grasping at shadows. Last Goodbye has a totally bizzare melodic structure. Lover, You Should Have Come Over is increadibly true to youth. Eternal Life is loud and angry. Corpus Christi is sort of jaw dropping just because it's hard to believe he had the range to sing it. musically grace is, quite simply, brilliant.
but what sets jeff buckley, and specifically Grace, appart, is something beyond musical ability. he brought music his whole being it seems. he didnt hold any emotion back. he sang becuase he truly loved to. and he could bring people emotion through his voice. anger, desire, sorrow, pain, love, joy, euphoria. listening to jeff buckley is like reading Cormac McCarthy. it brings one such a clear picture, or feeling, of raw humanity. it hurts but it's true to existance.

Avenue Q will only fuel the frustration of those who think that Broadway has given up on sophisticated entertainment geared to adults. "Whatever happened to Cole Porter's witty rhymes and mature subject matter?" they'll say. Well, it's hard to deny that Avenue Q's main frame of reference is Sesame Street and that its humor can be very broad--yes, there's profanity and puppet sex. But the show also displays heart ("The More You Ruv Someone" typically begins with "Why can't people get along?") and a pretty satisfying zany streak. Musically, the score is rooted in 1970s pop, with nods to the aforementioned Sesame Street. The excellent cast, dominated by John Tartaglia and Stephanie D'Abruzzo, does it justice, milking the humorous numbers for all they're worth and finding pathos in the more straightforward ones. Not bad for a childish show. --Elisabeth Vincentelli

5 out of 5 stars mind blowing.......2007-06-14

Seriously, this is the BEST musical that has EVER been created. And the soundtrack is the same.

5 out of 5 stars What fun!.......2007-06-13

I knew what I was walking into when I ordered my tickets for Avenue Q in April 07, since I read several reviews. And it is truly one of the funniest musicals I've ever seen. The harmless and classical tunes belie the racy and politically incurrent, but honest lyrics. I can't remember the last time I sat in a theater with almost everyone rolling in the seats. The only people not rolling apparently were not aware of the content and were shocked.

That's why I bought the soundtrack. Listening to it makes me laugh all over again.

If this CD is anything like the production we saw in Las Vegas, forget it! Unless you want to be preached to, that is, and by muppet-like characters to boot. You wouldn't expect anything but the best performance in Vegas; the tip off should have been that we were able to buy tickets within the hour--not a good sign. We left at intermission. /sl

In an era when pop nihilism fulfilled its dark promise all too regularly, Pearl Jam not only survived, but thrived to become one of rock's greatest bands. This 33-track double-disc career retrospective documents the arc of a career that went from arena and radio triumphs in the early 90's (while Nirvana's promise imploded in the wake of hype, Pearl Jam's crowd-pleasing fame only burgeoned) to the uncompromising, core audience-focused tack that carried the band into the 21st century. Shrewdly compiled by the band into an "Up" disc that chronicles the band's driving, Stone Gossard-Mike McCready fueled hard rock dramatics (including such early career landmarks as "Jeremy," "Alive" and "Even Flow" alongside more aggressive fare like "Go" and "Spin the Black Circle") and a "Down" side that focuses more on Eddie Vedder's brooding, often dark ballads ("Elderly Woman Behind The Counter In A Small Town," "Yellow Ledbetter," their unlikely hit cover of the oldie "Last Kiss"), it's a collection that underscores both the band's range and musical integrity. Though centered largely on the band's pre-Vitalogy studio era and containing no new material, longtime producer/collaborator Brendan O'Brien contributes remixes of "Once," "Alive" and "Black" that offer new insights on the familiar, while non-album tracks like "Man of the Hour" and "State of Love and Trust" considerably enhance the overall listening perspective here. --Jerry McCulley

5 out of 5 stars Seatle sound.......2007-07-06

This IS the early 90s sound. Between Pearl Jam, Nirvana and Sonic Youth grunge would never have made it. A great CD for any collection

5 out of 5 stars Great compilation.......2007-06-27

If you're like me, you bought Ten and then never really got into Pearl Jam much afterwards. If that sounds about right, then this compilation is for you. It had everything I was looking for and more.

4 out of 5 stars good band.......2007-03-09

My review is short and simple. This CD is worth the money. So pay up and enjoy.

5 out of 5 stars It came fast and i perfect condition.......2007-02-16

My CD came on time and in perfect condition.

4 out of 5 stars Very well-compiled collection.......2007-02-16

I bought this 2CD set upon its release in December 2004 because I had wanted to collect Pearl Jam songs I'd liked back in the 1990's, and up to that point, I owned none of their music. Many of the hits on here weren't played on the radio stations I was listening to at the time, so a lot of this music was new to me. I'm rating this 4 stars because it is a well-compiled collection of 33 songs that should appeal to non-core fans like myself who don't own all of Pearl Jam's studio albums, but who like many of their songs. Pearl Jam is a great rock band, they write intelligent lyrical songs, and the guitar, bass and drum players create thunderous power on many of their strong songs.

Best songs in my opinion: Immortality, I Got ID, Given To Fly, Not For You, I Am Mine, Even Flow, Once, and especially the awesome song Jeremy - one of the most powerful songs of the decade and despite its chilling subject matter, my favourite song of theirs .

The Traveling Wilburys were one of the few supergroups that lived up to their promise, because they didn't try to. Things started inauspiciously when George Harrison, needing a B-side for a 1988 single, called in friends Jeff Lynne, Bob Dylan, Tom Petty, and Roy Orbison for assistance. Two albums later--the second without Orbison, who had passed away shortly after the first was released--the loose-knit collective had recorded material that was as durable, and occasionally eclipsed, the participants' legendary solo work. The Wilburys succeeded due to a genial and contagious camaraderie that permeates both discs. What could have been a train wreck of ego clashes instead resulted in a frothy meeting of the minds. These guys are having a blast, trading lead vocals and harmonies on energetic folk-rock, quirky rockabilly, and Beatlesque pop that shimmers with the respect and esteem the members clearly hold for each other. Harrison and Lynne's rather slick production polishes off edges that might better have been left unvarnished, but there's no denying the loosey-goosey craftsmanship at work in tunes such as "Handle with Care," "End of the Line," and a striking Orbison performance on "Not Alone Anymore" that ranks with any of his finest. Both albums were million-sellers, but oddly went out of print for about a decade until Rhino resurrected them, adding two rare tracks per disc as well as a DVD of music videos and a band documentary. The resulting package is a comprehensive overview of a once--well, twice--in-a-lifetime project that, especially after Harrison's passing, will never be repeated. --Hal Horowitz

5 out of 5 stars "Handle With Care" this is the ultimate prize!.......2007-07-31

As the author of the Jefferson Airplane book "Take Me To A Circus Tent" and a former radio disc-jockey, I am often asked to write and or discuss various music supplies and recordings from the 60's and 70's.

You've heard the terms "Supergroup", "Rock "Legends", and "Heavyweights." The Traveling Wilburys exemplified the terms but what made the project so extraordinary were some other expressions "Respect", "Fun", and "Egos in check."

The opening track "Handle With Care" may be the best song written in the past twenty years. The sound of the guitars, the Harrison vocal segments, and the blending of the words and music make this a song for the ages. It is an example of a tune so powerful and addicting that if the rest of the CD were blank justice wouldn't be served if we didn't purchase a copy. The consistency of the tracks the guys penned is a credit to their collective genius. "Heading For The Light" is another instant classic. The vocals are delivered with such sincerity you feel that you are in the recording studio. "Tweeter And The Monkey Man" is Dylan magic. At any moment Dylan could deliver a masterful performance. The song is as eventful as the wonderful words found on "Desire" and Blood On The Tracks." When the follow-up CD came out many unjustly only wanted to compare it to the debut. The new release will be a great excuse to rediscover some brilliant compositions. "The Devil's Been Busy", "Where Were You Last Night?", and "Cool Dry Place" are reason alone that the follow-up should have been placed on a higher pedestal.

The bonus tracks are more than a generous holiday gift. "Nobody's Child" which originally appeared as a charity song for the Romanian earthquake victims is a song that any artist should be honored to have on one of their releases. If you have enjoyed previously the myriad of versions of the song "Runaway", here is another one that will mesmerize you! I don't even have to mention the DVD bonus with the videos.

It's hard to imagine a world without George and Roy. It is very easy to imagine how special their families are!

Enjoy the music and be well,
Craig Fenton

5 out of 5 stars Awesome.......2007-07-31

It's so awesome when a talented group like the Wilburys get together-it's so sad that this is all that they released. I want MORE!!

3 out of 5 stars Who Was In The Band? The Chicks?.......2007-07-30

The DVD was really the only reason to get this set. I had the originals when they were released. The sound is a bit better on these but who really cares? As for the bonus tracks, a total waste of time. They missed a lot of potential tracks which were overlooked as well as a "B" side. They could have even padded out the rest of the CD's with the 12" mixes. Nevertheless, they put Olivia Harrison in charge with Roy Orbison's widow assisting & this was the result! Jeff Lynne, Bob Dylan & Tom Petty should have had the say so on this one, not the widows. After all, who played in this band? Enough Said!

5 out of 5 stars If you are a fan.......2007-07-28

If you are a fan of Tom, George, Roy, Jeff and Bob you will love this set. I have both vol.1 and 3 on vinyl, but hardly ever listened to vol.3. I did not realize how good that album was. I have fallen in love with vol 3. The dvd with the music videos and the documentary is fun and very interesting. It is amazing to watch these artists at work. I highly recommend this set.

5 out of 5 stars HANDLE WITH CARE - THIS SET IS A REAL GEM.......2007-07-23

The Traveling Wilburys were one of the few supergroups that lived up to their promise, mostly because they didn't try to. Things started off simply enough when George Harrison, needing a B-side for a 1988 single, called on friend Jeff Lynne who happened to know that Bob Dylan had a studio nearby in L.A.. George's guitar was at Tom Petty's house and by that point they decided to do the group thing.

The group was complete with the addition of Roy Orbison, acclaimed by many as "The Most Beautiful Voice in Rock n' Roll." Unfortunately, Orbison passed away shortly after the first album was released, but the Wilburys succeeded due to the genial camaraderie that is reverberates through both discs. What could have been a train wreck of ego, instead resulted in these guys having a blast, trading lead vocals and harmonies that shimmer with the affection and respect the members clearly held for each other.

Harrison and Lynne's beautiful production make these records both listenable and memorable, particularly "Handle with Care," "End of the Line," and a breathtaking Orbison performance on "Not Alone Anymore". The CD's went out of print for about a decade until Olivia Harrison completed George's wishes to re-master and re-release the material, adding two rare tracks per disc as well as a DVD of music videos and a band documentary. The Deluxe package also includes a hard cover book of rare photos and a sticker.

This is a comprehensive overview of a twice-in-a-lifetime project that, especially after Harrison's and Orbison's passing, will never be repeated.

4 out of 5 stars I love the music.......2007-07-23

I bought the CD (I'm sure I have the tape somewhere) after going to see Xanadu the musical on Broadway. These songs are great. These are the best songs by ELO and some of the best by Olivia Newton-John.

5 out of 5 stars Saw the Broadway show!!!!.......2007-07-13

Holy Moly- The movie is terrible and the broadway musical is PURE Heaven! What a blast. Go Go GO! It's the most fun I've had in a theater in years!

4 out of 5 stars Just saw the Broadway show!.......2007-07-09

let's face it the movie sucks; the soundtrack is pretty great (with nostalgia's glow). so, i was sooo shocked by the stage version. the creators figured that taking a crappy, dated film and sending it up is, if not easier, better than trying to recreate a classic. trust me, that's the only reason i looked at this listing, haha. it made me realize that even the crap from our past can be good enough to look back on fondly.

5 out of 5 stars XANADU still rocks!.......2007-06-04

Yep! Proud to say I own the CD and DVD. The movie was corney but the soundtrack was great! I remember seeing the movie when I was younger and left the theater happy because it was all fantasy and I hummed to all the songs. Olivia has a voice of a goddess and I I'll never get tired listening to "MAGIC" over and over again. If anybody come visit NYC go see XANADU on broadway. I had such a good time and the show is real funny because they make a parady of the movie.

5 out of 5 stars great for nostalgia.......2007-05-22

Great CD for "old" people that remember it. The Cliff Richard songs are kind of plain, but the rest is good to listen to.

4 out of 5 stars Let's play all night long with Jeff! !.......2007-07-31

Jeff Kashiwa, former member of the popular group The Rippingtons, makes late night music for adults to chill out too, and this album is no different and sees him in great form again. Well, I think this sax master just keeps getting better.
Whether your'e in the mood for.... luuuv... or driving down a busy motorway... turn up the vibes and chill, relax and your cares just float away on hearing that incredible and very recognizable sax !!
The mellow or upbeat nature of his playing makes it seems as though the music is flowing, dancing... His notes are long and engaging and never shrill, so that they draw the listener in and invite him to sit for a while and relax.
He manages to vary the mood with each track - each one is incredible.
My favourite tracks are "The Lucky One", "Movin' Up" , "Blue Jeans" and the mellow "New View" with soft piano play.
You will adore the mellow saxaphone sound of Jeff : smooth, chilled and saxy!
Guests Alex Al (bass), Lenny Castro (percussion), Russell Ferrante (piano, fender rhodes), Gregg Carmichael (guitar), Dave Kochanski (keybord, producer) and Barry Danielian (trumpet) join in.
Prepare to play all night long wih Jeff !

Andrew Lloyd Webber and Tim Rice's Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat completed the transition from cantata for schoolkids to big-budget glitzfest with Steven Pimlott's 1991 London revival. Here's the 1992 Canadian version of that show, and even if it's not an ideal recording--Janet Metz as the narrator is no match for Laurie Beechman in the original Broadway cast and there's a little too much synthesizer in the orchestrations--this CD is valuable for the performance of former teen pop idol Donny Osmond as the title character. He's in excellent voice, and was so right for the role that he was selected to preserve it for the 2000 video production. And of course the songs are still here, showcasing Rice's witty lyrics and Lloyd Webber's chameleon tendencies--dabbling in country, calypso, French cafés, and a King-like pharaoh--as well as favorites "Any Dream Will Do," "Close Every Door," and "Go, Go, Go Joseph." This production also includes the "Joseph Remix" (also known as the "Joseph Megamix"), a nine-minute medley of themes arranged with a heavy beat that was used for a kind of onstage aerobics routine as the show's postscript. --David Horiuchi

5 out of 5 stars Listen to over and over.......2007-07-23

This CD is entertaining and can be listened to over and over again. My family wore out the first copy, so I bought another one. I will make a fair use copy of this one.

5 out of 5 stars JUST THE BEST.......2007-05-13

If you haven't seen this play yet, don't miss it if it comes to your town.
However, if you want to hear the music with Donny Osmond's voice, then buy this cd.

4 out of 5 stars Fabulous Music!.......2007-03-08

It goes without saying that the music is fabulous, as ever. It's a timeless story and Donny Osmond still has a great voice. I bought the sound track after watching the movie over and over, so my point of view is biased toward the movie sound track. I found the narrator's voice on this CD to be a little too high-pitched for me, but I eventually got used to it. The French accent in "Those Canaan Days" was deliberately overdone and spoiled an otherwise interesting song. Other than that, the CD music was close enough to the movie sound track to be satisfying.

5 out of 5 stars We love it.......2007-01-17

This was for my 10 year old daughter for Christmas. She has every song memorized already. It was a good deal too!

2 out of 5 stars Unhappy with sound.......2007-01-09

I had bought an original cassette when I saw the show in Chicago. I was very excited to find this CD as I had worn the cassette out. I was however very disappointed with the quality of sound. I could not hear the lead singer over the chorus, no matter how I adjusted my speakers. I do not know if all these CD's are like this, but I would not recommend it due to poor quality of sound.

After Carnivàle, Jeff Beal has given HBO another Emmy-nominated score, this time for the tale of sex, politics, and togas known as Rome. There's a long history of fabulously grand scores in the sword-and-sandals genre (Miklós Rózsa's Ben-Hur, Alex North's Cleopatra) but according to Beal HBO wasn't interested in classic big orchestral compositions, so he worked on a smaller--yet still lush--scale that emphasizes the ethnic instruments that could be found in the farther reaches of the Roman Empire. A Middle Eastern influence, for instance, can clearly be heard on "Rome Main Title Theme," "The Forum" and "Janus Breaks," among many others. If there's one signature sound on the CD, it's the recurring use of the flute, which can suggest emotions ranging from romantic ("Octavian & Octavia's Themes") to melancholy (paired with strings on "Farewells, the Storm") to dread (combined with percussion on "Caesar's Seizure"). The album starts running out of steam about two thirds of the way through, however, making one pine for a bit of orchestral bang for one's buck. --Elisabeth Vincentelli

Album Description

Rome: Music from the HBO Series features a dramatic score by Emmy award winning composer Jeff Beal (Pollock, HBO's Carnivale). A haunting album of ancient sounds and rhythms, the album perfectly complements the HBO series that chronicles the epic times that saw the fall of a republic and the creation of an empire.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Incredibly beautiful and haunting........2007-05-23

I waited for many months until HBO got around to releasing the soundtrack to this incredible drama series. If you are a fan of the series, then this is absolutely essential to add to one's music collection. The composer, Jeff Beal, reminds me a great deal of Brian Tyler--the producer of the Children of Dune soundtrack. Both artists incorporate a strong flair of Eastern elements into their music and the result is spectacular. My personal favorite of the Rome soundtrack? "Cleopatra Seduces Caesar" (and that episode is my favorite of the first season).

5 out of 5 stars You Won`t Be Disappointed!.......2007-05-15

This is an excellent soundtrack. If you liked the series Rome, you will love this CD. It transports you, and is excellent for a quiet evening at home, or a romantic one! A+++

5 out of 5 stars Brings you back to the first episodes!.......2007-05-14

When HBO canceled 'ROME', I was ready to fall on my gladius, but thank the gods who blessed me instead with "ROME: Music from the HBO Series by Jeff Beal". Now, I am just a CD Player away from reliving the spectacle that was "ROME" the series! This soundtrack is a must have for any serious fan of "ROME" or Roman history. Get it NOW or be cursed!

4 out of 5 stars The Rise and Fall of Rome.......2007-05-12

It is quite unfortunate that the epic HBO series `Rome' has been cancelled after two brilliant seasons. With a terrific cast, and sets that challenge those of big Hollywood epics, `Rome' remained an entertaining and historical show.

The score composed by Jeff Beal also added great texture and mood to the show. Using mainly instruments that existed at the time of Julius Caesar, Beal's themes remain present, yet do not draw attention away from the image.

The tracks are all compiled from the first 12-episode season and follow in a chronological order. However, there is no need for a second season soundtrack because many of the themes were recycled in very creative and useful ways. A highlight is definitely the track 'Riot in the Senate/Pullo Finds the Gold;' towards the end of the track there is sound and dialogue, (as HBO has done with several other soundtracks), of Caesar and Antony entering Rome with their army, as the musicians play a "cheerful" triumphant song for their arrival. The soundtrack overall is a great addition to HBO's list of series soundtracks.

5 out of 5 stars The essence of Rome.......2007-05-07

This soundtrack brought tears to my eyes. I had wanted to buy the tracks since the show first premeired. The CD captures the spirit of the show. From passion to tortured sadness, each track is beautiful and sure to bring a nostalgic smile to your face. Very haunting and ethereal.

Album Description

Hayley Westenra's new album Odyssey was always going to be a different proposition to Pure, the record-breaking 2003 collection which marked her international debut. A lot has happened to the young New Zealander over the past two or three years--and those changes are clearly reflected by a record which encapsulates her growth from a budding teenage prodigy into a mature young woman.

Now, at 18, Hayley is ready to show the world how much she has grown up, both as an artist and as an individual. Fans of Pure will be pleasantly surprised by her new album. Her wonderful voice retains its crystal-clear purity, but Westenra's singing is now richer and more rounded than before. Touring the world and singing in some of its greatest concert venues, such as the Sydney Opera House, Royal Albert Hall, and Carnegie Hall, has worked wonders for her confidence. Suitably emboldened, she has embraced an even wider range of musical styles including classical, hymns, folk and pop.

"I was happy with Pure at the time, but I've moved on so much," says Hayley. "It's really exciting to have something new out there for people to listen to. I wanted to make a record that represented me as a person. And I think I've improved as a vocalist."

Variety is certainly one of the keywords with Hayley's new album. When she first entered a recording studio in New Zealand as a 12-year-old, Westenra restricted herself to classical pieces and show tunes. Now, in addition to impressive takes on classical works, Hayley uses her new album to perform an inspired cover of Joni Mitchell's "Both Sides Now" and has arranged and written much of the material. "I like to push myself, and I'm now confident enough to try different things. I have been much more involved behind the scenes with this album--I wanted to put my individual stamp on each song."

With her career stretching out promisingly before her, Hayley is also keen to continue experimenting. She is still primarily a classical crossover artist but she also wants to keep broadening those musical horizons. Three years after her international debut CD, Hayley Westenra is still pure: she exudes pure quality and she remains pure class--but her musical journey continues with her new album Odyssey.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful melodies.......2007-06-08

This is a wonderful CD with beautiful melodies. Hayley Westenra has a very pure voice and sings right on key. The melodies are very relaxing and the musical settings are well arranged.

4 out of 5 stars Hayley Westenra - Odyssey.......2007-06-08

Pure, crystalline, angelic voice. Gorgeously produced. "Prayer" is stunning. "Both Sides Now" wonderful. The rest is good but not her best song selection. When I first heard this girl on the "Celtic Woman" tour I was totally blown away. None of her CDs will disappoint!

4 out of 5 stars Very soothing.......2007-05-14

Hayley Westenra's Odyssey is a very beautiful CD. If you switch on your walkman and listen to the CD's tracks non-stop, you'll soon feel like you're flying in Heaven. It's very soothing and heavenly. It calms you down, without causing you to feel lonely or sad because you're listening to it in solitary, like other vocal or classical songs do sometimes.

I would definitely recommend it to anyone interested. Quanta Qualia and Ave Maria are my most favourite tracks. Quanta Qualia is pure magic! I really feel as if I'm flying in Heaven when I listen to it.

4 out of 5 stars very good pop singer voice.......2007-05-13

the selections were tasteful and varied. the singer has a very good pop singer voice. i would have liked some voice variation between songs. all were sung in exactly the same style. good singing but without tonal variation the disk tends to be bland. i hope that as she gets more exposure she will vary her voice to make the songs stand out individually instead of letting them blend into one song on the disc. i would rate this 5 stars except for that major fault.

4 out of 5 stars Voice & level head deserve high marks .......2007-04-20

Not only has Hayley Westenra's voice remained "pure", but her good sense and sensibilty has stayed intact when so many similar young performers have gone over the deep end with extreme behavior and disreputable remarks. On this CD Miss Westernra covers a number of songs in her own special style, such as excellent versions of "Prayer", "May It Be" and "Both Sides Now". I hope to hear her renditions of more such tunes, old and new. I would like to hear her sing songs like "Yesterday", "I Still Believe in Love" and All I Know. She has a way with her soaring vocals that never lets the listener down.
