Welcome to hip-hop originality. On Wyclef Jean's The Ecleftic, his beats-beyond-borders ideology, seen on the Fugees' The Score and his own Carnival, shines bright. You cannot put a whitney houston cover with a Pink Floyd cover .....period... it is not right chico..."it don't mix" if you can understand my english. I was born and raised in Puerto Rico... so I know about the underground. I love wyclef and I understand what the kid is trying to do, but it does not work. Your No woman no cry cover is really chill. but don't press your luck my friend.... whish you were here just does not sound right.

I think this a very creative record . Wyclef jean take risks , so all the songs are not the at the same level . But a record that have Diallo among the tracks deserves serious listening and deep attention. Period.
I give to it 5 stars for its artistic achievements ( and because Earth , Wind and Fire appear !!)

Eclectic to say the least.......2004-07-20

Wyclef and the Refugee Camp hold a cross-genre fan base, being one of the influences of the hip hop world that can truly be said to have very high level of acceptance and support from non-hip-hop heads. Eleftic demonstraits why this is so beautifully. Wyclef comes with a strong album sporting an array of music that is as diverse as it is well crafted. Inspirations from classic rock, regae, soul, R&B, Dance and many other sources are noticable all over the album while successfully maintaing a very hip hop feel throughout the entire thing. This genre balancing act can be tricky but Wyclef does this wonderfully, and possibly even better than on his last solo album. The lyrics and rhymes range from not bad, to pretty good, and the singing is good as well. But the real star here is the music. The beats are diverse and enjoyable and will satisfy almost anyone. Songs like "wish you were here", "Run away", "911", "Doesnt matter", and "pulling me in" all sport styles that are different and have unique flavors to them and "Diallo Diallo" showcases wyclef's social conscious edge to his work.

All things considered some hip hop heads will argue that there isn't enough rap, or that it doesn't suit thier tastes. But Ecleftic can hold a rare title of being "hip hop for people who dont really like hip hop". And for me, and many other hip hop fans, elecftic will represent something different and a little innovative with great production work. Beats catchy enough to make you bob your head and enough soul to make you want to sing along, and plenty of culture - Wyclef proves once again on Ecleftic that hip hop is an artform that can be effectively used as glue to hold together many elements of several different musical genres at the same time, and bring it all together in a melody that's different pieces oddly compliment one another beautifully.

I like The Carnival and Preacher's Son better, but this is listenable. As far as musically, Wyclef's improved, but he is kinda immature on this album. "Where Fugees At?" is a good beat, but why's he askin? Supposedly it's his fault that they split up, according to Pras(though he's not a very reliable source). Clef also makes the mistake of trying to take on Canibus, his former protege(Canibus blamed Wyclef for the failure of his debut, and dissed him on "2000 B.C."). Clef is obviously no match for Canibus and if 'Bis retaliated on him, Clef would be finished. Besides those mistakes, and the horrible "Dirty South", Clef seems to have grown a little. On "Perfect Gentlemen", Clef defends strippers and tells the story of a romance between him and a stripper(likely false). The album misses that Fugees vibe that was still there on The Carnival. The less know guest appearences are boring, but the big names are funny and acceptable. Kenny Rogers, of all people, sings on "Kenny Rogers Dub Plate", where Wyclef and other rappers rhyme over a beat as Kenny sings the hook. This song is surprisingly likeable as is "It Doesn't Matter" which has another surprising guest, wrestler The Rock. On "911", Clef teams up with Mary J. Blige to showcase his actually not bad singing voice. Besides the awful Whitney Houston team up on her dub plate, Clef seems to have it down. Songs like "Hollyhood to Hollywood" and "Diallo" showcase his amazing creativity once again, the latter which is based on the case of the police shooting a man named Diallo 41 times for nothing. One of my favorite songs is "Wish You Were Here", which sounds alot like "Gone Til November", because of Clef's flow from singing to rapping. Basically, get Clef's other albums first(The Carnival, Preacher's Son, the fugees Score, and Pras' Ghetto Supastar).

Haters run Wyclef Jean is at it again.......2004-06-24

This album is great. He's got two diss tracks, "Where Fugees At"(Pras, Lauryn diss) and "However You Want It"(Canibus diss). He's got emotional songs like "911", "Diallo", and "Hollywood to Hollyhood". He also has fun songs like "It Doesn't Matter", "Perfect Gentleman", and "Something About Mary". Overall this album is mostly good. I think he could've done better, but overall this is a must-by.

Biggie is back again--freestyling like only a dead man can on the intro to this second volume culled from the archives of NYC's Lyricist Lounge. You have to wonder why hip-hop can't let the man rest in peace? Must be something to do with the papers. Same could be said of this record's transparent attempt to keep a franchise alive and help push the Rawkus label further into mainstream consciousness. Aside from the aforementioned intro and Q-Tip's "live" outro, there's precious little evidence that the Lyricist Lounge is, in actuality, a freestyle forum with a monthly live event in New York City. The pairings of established and lesser MCs are suitably uninspired: Big Noyd and Prodigy's "The Grimy Way" and Royce Da 5'9"s "Let's Grow" even sound as if they're retreading 1980s retro-synth soundtracks. And, predictably, Mos Def (Rawkus's would-be prophet and biggest seller) is all over the record. He pairs up first with Ghostface Killah (on the previously released "Ms Fat Booty" remix), then with Pharoahe Monch and Nate Dogg (on "Oh No"), and cameos on the Gang Starr remix of Macy Gray's "I've Committed Murder." It seems that the only people that really get it are Last Emperor and RZA, whose resurrected creature-feature "He Lives" performs radical psychic surgery on this comp's rotting corpse. --Chris Campion

I'm confused about something.......2005-10-19

This is basically adding on to what Adrian said earlier. I have had this CD for years and never noticed this. The back of the CD is not named right. I do understand that there is that He Lives song by RZA and that is track 15, but on the back of the CD it says 15 is Dilated Peoples. The version I have has Still Here and He Lives, but does not have Right and Exact on it.

Solid compilation album.......2005-08-06

A lot more known and accredited rappers are on this one and it makes for a better album from start to finish, but you still get some undergrown less known lyricits on it but not as many as Volume 1. Packed with 18 songs (1 is just a remix with a dfferent beat so it's 17 total songs), it has 2 classics, 1 almost classic, 4 I skip, 2 ok songs, and the others are good or great songs. Production is on point on most tracks as well, and a bunch of different producers get behiond the boards on this one. Hi Tek does 3 songs, Erick Sermon & ALChemist do 2 each, and Rcokwilder, DJ Roddy Rod, Ayatollah, DJ Roddy Rod, DJ Mighty Mi, Mad Lib, Prince Paul DJ Premier and Scott Storch all do 1. A good labum to have for fans of real hip hop and lyrics.

Pretty Nice.......2005-06-01

I bought this album for one song, Oh No with Mos Def and Phraoh monche and ended up liking the majority of the album. My BIGGEST beef is the large number of empty tracks between 17 and 38...what the heck is that about? I'm really glad the album showcases some of the lesser known artists like Words(worth), Consquence and Menace, and Saukrates. My favorite beat is from the Alchemist on Right and Exact, the oriental sound is ON FIRE. Pick up this album is you have some extra cash and want some hot beats and a nice mix of artists

First of all i would like to point out there are two versions of this album. Nothing major, but the copy i own, has a track with big L & C-town (called Still Here) in the place of The Last emporer. Both tracks are worthy of the cd yet the big l is doper.

With that being said the album itself is bangin, some commercial heads are featured which is okay since we all got to make money, but this is dope hip hop and you should buy it, not only is it mad cheap used, the album is worth every cent of that four dollars.

lyricist lounge.......2002-12-25

first of all i never heard the whole cd, i've just heard the sampler which is great. this is why i've gave it only 4 stars, i don't know that the rest of the songs are great, so i only gonna give you a review of the songs i've heard. "w.k.y.a." has a nice beat, "oh no..." is a great song, "makin' it blend" has a pretty commercial beat but it's listenable, "get that doe" is great, "sharp shooters" is nice, "the legendary street team(remix)" is better then the normal one. "he lives" has some great story-telling, "right & exact" is a pure dilated peoples song. i've also heard the remix of "i've commited murder" which is one of my favorite songs.

Mediocre at best.......2006-03-13

I thought that LSG 2 sounded mediocre as a whole. It sounded like throwaway tracks left in the studio that could have been on a Gerald Levert album. I hate to say this, but the Gerald Levert-produced songs on LSG2 are some of the worst I've ever heard from him for this trio. Most of the album is disjointed and Keith Sweat doesn't sound his best on here. Johnny Gill sounds disconnected from the songs. And Gerald sounds like he wants to lead the group, because he's the only good singer on this album. Even the guest appearances by Loon and another rapper don't blend well with the group. I can tell why this album flopped. I can't believe their label delayed their group's album so much, because people were excited for it. LSG's superior 1997 album was far, far better than this mediocre effort.

LSG - LSG 2 (Elektra, 2003)

It took seven years for Gerald Levert, Johnny Gill, and Keith Sweat to come back as LSG and release a followup to the superb Levert, Sweat, Gill album. But what's the real reason why they made this album? Was it to fulfill their contract and get outta dodge from Elektra Records? Or was it just for the sake of shutting up the fans who have been waiting forever for this?

Whatever the case, the project as a whole feels halfhearted. If you're one of the few people who bought this album, you'll notice that upon reading through the liner notes--there are none. There are hardly any shout outs; only a few people are thanked by the group as a whole, not individually. The CD sleeve doesn't have many pages in it either. As for the album, the songs aren't bad; in fact, the songs written and produced by Gerald (i.e., "Yesterday", "Cry and Make Love") are better than the songs he provided for his own album, Stroke of Genius. But you wish that he wrote more songs because the album is very short (around 45 minutes). Sadly, Keith Sweat doesn't contribute one track to the album. Moreover, "All I Know" sounds a little like SWV's "Rain".

However, it was nice to see Johnny Gill get work again, since that New Edition reunion STILL hasn't happened yet. He uses his vocal prowess on songs like "Cry and Make Love" and "What About Me" (not to be confused with the 1998 Gerald Levert song of the same name). A good album, just not great. Will there be an LSG 3? Don't hold your breath. -EJR

Another one of those "record contract fulfillment" albums.......2003-12-08

Sorry, but the people that said this album is just as good as (and even BETTER than) their first album really need to listen to their first album more closely. I know Johnny Gill has been sort of M.I.A. and Keith Sweat's last album was garbage (the one before that wasn't that great either), but I really expected more from this album.

Now, we all know that Gerald, Keith and Johnny are all great singers, but it doesn't sound like they're giving their all on this album. In fact, if I walked into a room and just heard this album playing, I wouldn't even have known this was LSG (they kind of sound like younger protégés of themselves). Check "All I Know", where, despite the smooth feel, it's hard to tell what's being said in the chorus.

With Gerald LeVert holding the pen, most listeners would expect more classics like "Door #1" and "My Side of the Bed". Sadly, the songs he wrote here aren't impressive, as evidenced by the bumpy "Lessons Learned" and the confusing and disorganized "Cry & Make Love". And what would a soulful crossover album (for lack of a better term) be without Loon? "Just Friends" doesn't really help or hurt the album. And the song that follows, "Wide Open" features a rap by someone named Bino, who sounds like Loon's brother or something.

This album probably would have been better if it was released two years after their first instead of FIVE years after their first. Also, they should have stuck with the same formula. This album is still okay to keep in your collection, but as they said back in '97, you should really stick with "what's behind door #1".

A little too much Sweat>>>>.......2003-11-11

This was a great idea. The first version of this trio was nice and one of the first times I remember artist coming together like this. Now everybody is tryin to do the "superalbum", especially in hip hop. Well after 6 years they hit us with the second part to their first classic. This..this is not a classic. It starts off with the lead single "Just Friends", which of course uses the Whodini sample "Friends". Decent cut. They actually enhanced the track a lill bit and sound good on top of it. Loon is unnecessary but then again very rarely is the hip hop verse on the R&B track necessary in today's world. The second track is decent also, entitled "Wide Open". The lyrical arrangement is cool. Johnny sounds great and it takes you back to the old LeVert tracks. After this cut is where the CD takes a turn for the worse. The key element in it's demise is Keith Sweat. I own every Keith CD up until '98. At that point the record label had grabbed him and tried to "cross him over". At that point I was out. Now dude has just lost his edge. Every now and then on this CD his voice ,which is an acquired taste, is ok but for the most part he's struggling through it. Track 3 "Shakedown" is embarrassing actually. The next 3 tracks follow the same pattern actually, Keith being unimpressive with Gerald and JG unable to save the tracks. Track 4 "fa free" starts good with JG crooning. Just a little too much Keith. Track 5 "Yesterday" is a nice Gerald selection but the track does nothing to keep you with it. Next. Another "Keith has lost it" cut "Play with Fire". Track 7 "What About Me" starts to bring the CD back. It's a mix between Stevie Wonders "All I do" and Carl Thomas "I wish". Keith is decent here. Track 8 is my favorite on the CD, "All I Know". Great song. Listening to it the chorus doesn't really sound like them but I love it. Has a definitely 70's feel with a funky drum program. The last cut on the CD "Cry and make Love" is a typical Gerald LeVert headboard banger. Overall I liked cuts 1,2,7,8 and 11. The magic is gone from this supergroup. I guess nothing last forever.........

Headphone Masterpiece.......2003-10-15

Although I thought the first one was better (just listen to Johnny turn it out on Round and Round and My Side of the Bed) this album did have some high points. If you want to get the full effect of the vocals and ad libs, listen to this album with a good set of headphones.

Good compilation.......2004-10-10

I really am just writing this to clarify that the song titled "Whatcha Gonna Do?" (#12) that is listed as DMX is NOT DMX... any hip hop fan can tell you that this is Jayo Felony. How that got confused, I have no idea. That being said, this is a good compilation for starting with late 90's hip hop.

Top Hits of '98!.......2001-02-19

This compilation features hip hop hits that climbed the charts in 1998. This album starts you off with a Latino hit called "Still Not a Player" by Big Punisher (R.I.P.). Which was everyone's jam. "Money Ain't a Thing" by Jermaine Dupri feat. Jay-Z which is featured on both JD's & Jay-Z's album. Next there's the L.O.X.'s best song they ever made called "Money, Power, Respect" featuring DMX & Lil' Kim, tight beat. "Deja Vu (Uptown Baby)" by Lord Tariq & Peter Gunz has gotten so much airplay. Maybe it's their best song too. Track 5 is 2Pac's "love song" called "Do For Love". E-40 has A LOT of slow songs and "Hope I Don't Go Back" is one of them. But it's a nice joint. The next track will get you pumped-up from those last 2 songs, it's called "Party ain't a Party" by Queen Pen w/ Markell Riley, Mr. Cheeks, Nutta Butta, & Freaky Tah. Busta Rhymes will make you "Turn it up" on the next track. "Get At Me Dog" is DMX's first single with a tight beat. (which feature's Sheek of The L.O.X.) I'm not hatin', but Snoog Dogg sounds weak on this good song called "Still a G Thing"; a sequel to "Nuttin but a G Thing". The 2nd verse of the hook in "It's Alright are not for lil' kids ears. "It's NOT Alright" Ya heard? Then there's the most pumped-up song on the compilation called "Watcha Gonna Do". This song is tight! You'll be boppin' heads to this one. Tracks 13-18 are the weak tracks except #14; it's "N.O.R.E." by Noreaga, which should'eve been put with the good tracks (#1-12). Overall, I gave this CD 4 stars cause of tracks 13, 15-18. If you loved the rap music of '98, this one's for you.

Great Mix Of Hip Hop From 1998!.......2000-04-24

This album features some of 1998's tightest hip-hop tracks! The best songs are Still Not A Player, Deja Vu, Do For Luv, Horse & Carriage, NORE, Get At Me Dog, Whatcha Gonna Do, Still A G Thang, and I Got The Hook-Up! Buy this album today!

people need to get the message and realize that commercial rap is not benificial to hiphop culture. these songs are weak, don't purchase it unless you're buying for someone you hate...

This cd's got some of the fattest drops of the whole year. Now you don't have to by an artist whole album to get the single!!!!!!!!Busta, Snoop, Lox, DMX, they're all here. Hella tight!!!!!!

A piece of history.......2006-06-03

Many of the songs on this recording are not available in sheet music, and although the sound quality isn't "leading edge" it makes me feel as though I am listening to actual performers back in the 30's & 40's, with young and gifted singers like Frank Sinatra, Jo Stafford, and Mel Torme, as well as others who are nameless or unknown to me on this album, and a delight to listen to. Manhattan Tower is why I bought this CD, and I got so much more from it than I bargained for. The illusion I have when I play it is that I am a young jazz artist in New York, feeling the pulse of the city and filling up with everything about being a part of New York.

A BIG disappointment!.......2004-08-19

I bought this CD for the Slaughter on Tenth Avenue soundtrack ballet by Richard Rodgers and Lennie Hayton. But none of the tracks on this CD can be appreciated. It is a mono recording, and that immediately leaves you with a very incomplete sound. No amount of treble and bass adjustment can eliminate the awful tinny sound throughout the disc.

Album Description

Music was originally a communal act. It was utilitarian and, in a way, magic - it made work easy. Music was also a reflection of the nascent social order, with one lead voice and the rest responding. The first solo music was therefore a powerful act of liberation, of spirit. This recording contains a great diversity of solos; more than a millennium separates the oldest from the most recent; there are solos for flutes, reeds, brass, lutes, zithers, fiddles, piano, percussion, and voice; the music comes from the Near East, the Far East, Australia, Europe, and the Americas. But despite the contrast of instruments and styles, what gradually becomes apparent is the similarity beneath the surface of these works. Soul Alone: The Art of the Solo suggests that there is some fundamental distinction about the way musicians express themselves in a solo setting - something that defines the Art of the Solo.

This is some of the most personally felt music the world's greatest traditions have to offer. If the act of making music is a personal one, so too is listening. Music was always meant to be listened to - by other people, or by something else, whether you call it God or nature or by another name. And that is the reason for Soul Alone: The Art of the Solo. Because after all, music can be performed alone, and heard alone, but it is still a communal art, meant to be shared. Perhaps it only truly becomes music when it is shared.
