Dordán, an Irish quartet, plays a brand of acoustic Celtic music that bridges traditional and classical heritages, conveying a dignified mood of mature good cheer. The group's organic instrumentation--fiddle, flute, whistles, viola, cello, harp, and guitar--plus occasional, understated percussion--yields suites, reels, and odes that are delicate and precisely played, with nary a note out of place. You'll find no rollicking jigs or reverb-enhanced journeys into the mystic on this, the group's second U.S. release. You will discover one of Celtic music's preeminent whistler-players (Mary Bergin) and thoughtful interpretations of works by Handel ("Gigue"), Mozart ("Ridente La Calma"), and Turlough O'Carolan ("Sir Arthur Shaen"). The disc's standout selection is the first of its four vocal tracks, "Coilin Phadraic Sheamais," an a cappella working-class tale (sung in Gaelic) that involves mesmerizing, chantlike harmonies. --Terry Wood

A lilting trip to Ireland........2006-07-04

This is one of my favorite CDs. Most of the music is mellow, but full of energy at the same time. The wide variety of instruments played insures that the music is definitely not dull. The artists who play them lovingly bring out tunes that have been played for generations in Ireland. You won't be disappointed with this CD.

INSPIRING AS USUAL.......2004-06-29

Sue Richards is the penultimate Celtic harpist! Her music evokes the beauty and tranquillity of Scottish hills & moors while providing a bit of serenity for the daily commute. My favorite CD is Grey Eyed Morn but this one is almost as great.

The blending of uileann pipes with violin produces such a pleasing sound that one is inclined to listen to the CD several times in a row. Furthermore, the Celtic flavor richly enhances the Christmas mood, which is exceptionally cheerful in this rendition. However, not all of these songs are strictly Christmas songs, so one can enjoy them year-round. Incidentally, both performers (Scarlet Rivera and Eric Rigler) are renowned in their field, having contributed to the soundtrack to Braveheart, among others.
