Tan Dun straddles the very different worlds of concert music and film scores, winning admirers in both. He's perhaps best known for his score to Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon, which shares with Hero a visual poetry that transcends the sword-filled action film genre. In Crouching Tiger, Tan Dun's music was often striking. In Hero he often lapses into repetition and cliché, a failing compensated for by several appealing cues. The Overture, for example, begins with the mournful wail of ancient Chinese instruments set against pounding drums, a promising start that evokes ancient China and the struggles to come. There's a mournful soprano vocalise in "Gone With the Leaves," and the "Warriors" cue recalls Prokofiev's Alexander Nevsky. The plucking of the ancient Chinese lute in "In the Chess Court" evokes a timeless, peaceful mood, contrasting with the thrilling kodo drummers showcased in "Swift Sword." Itzhak Perlman gets cover billing for violin solos any competent studio fiddler could have handled. Tan Dun's admirers will want this, and audiophiles will love those kodo drummers. --Dan Davis

5 out of 5 stars Perfection at its Best.......2007-01-05

I received the Hero CD in mint condition and in a timely fashion. There's a plethora of things one could complain about, and when something works how it should, sometimes it gets overlooked. Not this time! I would just like to commend Amazon.Com on a job well done...

5 out of 5 stars Tranquil Beauty.......2006-08-08

After seeing Hero, one of the (many) things that stuck with me was the evocative soundtrack. It set a perfect backdrop to the artistry and beauty of the story.

After purchasing the soundtrack, I was reminded of many of the scenes I enjoy, especially the tracks for the fight in the chess house ("In the Chess Court"), and in the yellow wood ("Gone with Leaves"). "Longing" is one of the most hauntingly serene pieces of film music I have heard.

This is not, obviously, a CD to listen to while you do step aerobics.
The theme is repeated and varied often, evoking the way the film's story is repeated from different perspectives, but those with short attention spans may perceive it as merely repetitive.

Beyond its association with the film, this soundtrack is an incredibly calming work of art. To be enjoyed with a good cup of hot tea.
5 stars.

5 out of 5 stars Beautiful!.......2006-03-19

Interesting way to present some Chinese history by convoluted storytelling. Jet Li provides a subtle, challenging performance. It's a visually stunning movie to look at, as well. In a way, it's a lot like some classic Westerns in that the gorgeously stark landscapes of China become just as much a "star" as the players.

One of the real draws is the music. Tan Dun's compositions are beautiful, sad and celebratory at the same time, and haunting. I think it was pure genius to pair his compositions with Perlman. I had to wait a few months for the DVD, but I went out and bought the music CD immediately after seeing this gem of a movie.

5 out of 5 stars Tranquility, Serenity, Beauty, and Superb Asian Movie Soundtrack.......2006-02-25

When I want to reconnect with my inner self and take a "time out" from my rat race life, I play either this CD or the sound track from "The Last Samurai". The theme from this CD stays in your head all day. If you like soundtracks, asian style muusic, classical music, and beauty, this CD has it all. I sometimes end up watching the movie again later in the week. I collect movie soundtracks and this is in my top ten.

4 out of 5 stars Had to have the opening song.......2007-03-01

Long ago I had to sell the vinyl version, along with the rest of my collection. And I always regretted the loss. The opening theme music stuck in my mind when I saw the movie in its first-run release. All these years, that music wasn't forgotten. This cd version surpasses the vinyl. And the music holds up pretty well, all things considered.

4 out of 5 stars You Warriors are good. Real good. .......2006-04-20

Want to see an entire generation of grown men act like children? Play the opening theme from 1979's "The Warriors." Barry de Vorzon's concoction of swirly synths, smattering of electric piano, and steady tempo rolling along like a subway, is a sure thing to get fists in the air, and shouts of enthusiasm.
A big part of The Warriors appeal is the soundtrack, which was reissued recently. It`s equal parts exhilarating, funky, poignant and cheesy. Just like the movie.
The cover of 60's classic "Nowhere to Run" is like Michael McDonald doing the "Hot Lunch Jam" from "Fame." The catchy salsa disco "In Havana" has 70's strings, and bizarrely enough, Chevy Chase on backing vocals. Then again, he was Steely Dan's original drummer. Just thought I'd also point out this was co-produced by a man named Artie Ripp.
"Echoes In My Mind" by Mandrill could be Sly Stone leading Earth, Wind, and Fire. This contains so much funky, nocturnal Summer spirit, you can practically smell sweat and see neon lights flashing.
Hearing guitar genius Joe Walsh's "In the City," automatically makes you think of them walking victorious but downcast on the beach into the Coney Island morning sun. This is a slightly more discofied version than the one he did with the Eagles. But it's just as melodic, affecting and still has that killer slide guitar.
"Love Is a Fire" by Genya Raven sounds like every 80's Kiss song, especially the line "Beginning to feel my temperature rise." Cheese icon Desmond Child bellows "Last of an Ancient Breed," which has that melodramatic Meat Loaf quality, even if he was probably aiming for Bruce. Although the lyric "Ride the devil's steed" is more Tenacious D than Springsteen. Perhaps the ultimate song for caucasian men who like to high-five and wear doo-rags.
Who would've thought a movie about gangs during a turbulent time in N.Y.C. (and that inspired riots in some cities) could provoke such warm feelings of innocence and a nagging sense of nostalgia? Is the current state of the world that f@#$#ked up, or are we yearning for our childhood? Either way, can you dig it?

3 out of 5 stars The beginning of the end.......2005-05-05

This album was the start of Ted Nugent's downfall. The songs, singing, and production for this album were nowhere close to the previous album, Cat Scratch Fever. What a letdown after such promise by the Nuge. Derek St. Holmes departed before Weekend Warriors was made, and the band was never NEARLY as good as when he was a part of it. His song writing and singing were a huge reason why the first three studio albums by Ted (Ted Nugent, Free For All, and Cat Scratch Fever) were excellent. Besides the weaker song writing and singing, the production for this album, and his next few ones (State of Shock, Scream Dream, and Intensities in Ten Cities) was AWFUL. The sound is weak, meak, failing to capture the power and loudness and CRANK of Ted Nugent.

I gave this three stars at first, because there are a couple of good tunes ("Venom Soup" is my favorite...boy, how good this song would sound with better production), but on second thought, this deserves only two stars. However, I can't change my rating now that I've submitted my review.

Cat Scratch Fever was Ted's high point, and for that awesome album to be followed up with Weekend Warriors was one of my biggest disappointments as a hard rock fan back in the late 70's.

5 out of 5 stars An Unfairly Overlooked Ted Nugent Album.......2003-11-24

WEEKEND WARRIORS is an unfairly overlooked Ted Nugent album. It's not as great as his first three albums, GREAT GONZOS, SUPER HITS, DOUBLE LIVE GONZO, LIVE AT HAMMERSMITH '79, or SPIRIT OF THE WILD, but it's a wonderful album in its own right. If you like any of the aforementioned albums and you believe in the difference between right and wrong, you'll want WEEKEND WARRIORS.

4 out of 5 stars A good one from Ted.......2002-06-05

Nicely put together album, good from start to finish.
There's a couple of tracks, 'Venom Soup' and 'Smokescreen' that resemble the European rock a lot, not quite his usual style, but they're good just the same. It's just that I wasn't expecting the change.
Some of the songs are among my Nugent favourites, especially 'Need you Bad' and 'Weekend warriors'. That is not to say that the 'not so fast' ones like 'Tight spots' or 'One woman' are not just as good.
Don't miss this album, it's worth having.

5 out of 5 stars Weened on Ted.......2001-12-09

This was the last great Ted album. Having graduated in '79 in Minnesota it was natural to be a huge Ted fan. It was the peak of the partying years and not too many nights went by without pounding some Ted into my head. Saw him twice live and it still gives me goosebumps when Free For All starts up. It seems like Ted faded with the 80's just like the fun did. This still doesn't have the overall greatness of previous albums but manages some good guitar riffs and decent lyrics.

4 out of 5 stars Overlooked!!.......2001-10-06

People consider Ted's early albums his "classic" period. I agree. But I've always felt that this album, along with Scream Dream & State of Shock should be thought of in the same regard. I even love his 4 Atlantic records from the 80's! (Although they do sound outdated in some parts.)I love cranking any Ted album just to hear his guitar! This album rocks. An absolute must have for any Nugent fan!!

first you need to understand that i am not a Christian. what i am
is a very spiritual person who loves the Creator. and this cd makes my spirit...dance and rejoice! it moves me deep in the soul! i just feel good listening to hit.

the cd is goes so much deeper than Work It Out (the remix). it takes me back to the old days of church. when i would be sitting in the pews with my grandmother. the Choir, could be heard a block away singing in praise of the Creator! people would be standing outside the church just to listen to the choir. THATS what the cd reminds me of. i want to pick a favorite but im like them all.

this cd is a must for anyone...christian or non-christian. it WILL touch you in some way!

Just what is meant by "cultural piracy"? The term gets thrown around when Paul Simon makes an album of African-derived music, or David Byrne tries his hand at Latin rhythms. More recently the imperialist charge has been levelled at the practice of appropriating nonwestern traditional music into western club beats, a genre known variously as trance, world dance, ethno-techno, or global ambient, and represented by the globetrotting grab-bag sounds of groups like Trans-Global Underground, Banco de Gaia, and the leaders of the stew school, London's Loop Guru.

In their hands, techno and nonwestern styles are natural bedfellows. Both unfold along a fluid, linear path that put them at odds with western pop's verse-chorus infatuation. And sociologically speaking, the ecstatic release of the dancefloor has tons in common with the spiritual exorcism in mystic folk from Bali, Java, India, Iran, or Morocco--just some of the places represented on Loop Guru's second album, Amrita. In fact, the only impediment to ethno-techno's beautiful marriage is how well producers turn the music's cultural dislocation into postmodern enlightenment. Loop Guru, meticulous studio crafters and enthusiastic live performers, fare well in the middle passage. They do it not as looters, nor as teachers (Amrita's samples and appropriations are never credited), but with the simple (and best) justification--it sounds good. --Roni Sarig

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars super sounds.......2000-03-06

i haven't heard any of Loop Guru's other stuff but this blew me away. it's an excellent cd if your looking for soothing, exotic and fresh sounds. it was made in 96' but it's very "now". timeless would be a better description. the more i listen to it, the better it gets - i notice something new with each listen. wonderful, beautiful cd, a must buy.

5 out of 5 stars great,great,great!.......1999-07-22

Even though most people who know and like Loop Guru prefer their album Dunjia, I think in the long run and after listening to both albums for years now Amrita offers more versatility. It might be less danceable and instantly accessible than Dunjia and it seems more translucent and fragmented but you never get tired of it because the melodies dont wear out but actually make more and more sense. Phenomenal album. It can happen that you hear a song somewhere and you're like :"wow who's that band? Sounds familiar. I hope I have it." and when you find out its Loop you are actually relieved to know them already and havent let a great band like that slip by.

5 out of 5 stars A brilliant, flawless album........1999-02-24

A lot of electronic/cross-cultural music that I have listened to is catchy and simple enough that it has motivated me to try my hand at it. This album, however, is so good that I realize there is a level I will never achieve. I have owned it for a year now and never get tired of a single track. The best tracks are "Diwana," "Often Again," and "Epic Song."

3 out of 5 stars AmbientGroove & Trancy.......1998-07-17

The album taken together is put together after the name: in a loop format in the vein of higher quality ambient world (sort of). What is the highlight though is track #3 Diwana. Awesome song full of spiritual vigor and essence. Close your eyes and experience the great dragon.

this along with louder than hell are manowars worst albums. If you want good manowar by into the glory ride, or any of their 80's albums.

5 out of 5 stars Manowar warriors of the world.......2006-10-18

Heavy, beautiful and diverse, sounds like no one but manowar,a mark of true greatness, ultra fast- mid paced -heavy ballads-great vocals -great musicianship, cant say enough, this has put them over the top in europe home of true metal people,if you fit in that category, buy and enjoy.

5 out of 5 stars A great CD with a lot of variety.......2006-08-05

This was my first experience with Manowar, and I am impressed. Their lyrics are somewhat untraditional with heavy references to Nordic mythology and history. However, most of the tracks have a driving, exciting feel that really pump you up as you listen.

My favorite track on this CD is "Call to Arms". It's a rallying song that would be great either playing games (where I first heard it), or say, starting a sporting event. "Warriors of the World" also has this feel of getting everyone all riled up for something exciting to happen.

However there are also some calmer tracks on the CD, some of which are instrumental. One song, "Nessun Dorma" is done entirely in Italian with an operatic feel, and is a tribute to the mother of one of the band members. Needless to say, it is not metal at all.

If you were unfamiliar with the group, a first listen of this CD would probably make you think that not all these songs were performed by the same band. This CD is a showcase of the many talents of this group, because they can make both awesome and beautiful music at will.

Not only are they talented musicians, but contrary to a lot of metal groups, they can also sing as well as scream.

I would encourage a first time listener to preview "Call to Arms". If you don't feel awesome after hearing it, this CD may not be for you.

4 out of 5 stars Regreso con Gloria........2006-06-30

It is a wonderful cd. I work with the elderly
and they even like it. I play it almost daily
and listen to it in my car. It's GREAT!

5 out of 5 stars An excellent tribute to an excellent man.......2007-02-17

This CD includes 15 beautiful country-style songs with a wonderful message to preserve the wildlife around us. The first track Wildlife Warriors was written by John Williamson as a tribute to Steve Irwin and his conservation work only a few hours after he performed at the Steve Irwin Memorial Service. There are also two live tracks included in this CD from the memorial service: Home Among the Gum Trees and True Blue. I absolutely love these live versions--they are so full of emotion--much more than his other recordings of the same songs. It feels like there are fewer and fewer good songs/CD's out there these days that convey important messages. This CD stands out as a real treasure. It's an excellent tribute to a wonderful man who cared so much about wildlife, plus $1 from purchasing this CD will go to the Wildlife Warriors Worldwide fund.

5 out of 5 stars The Only Demonstration Disc You'll Ever Need.......2006-06-10

Well, I suppose that depends on the type of music you're testing your equipment for. However, go to almost any online discussion of audio equipment, particularly subwoofers, and you'll come across this disc. Sure, most of the other reviewers mention the sound effects in less than glowing terms. It remains though that this disc contains some of the crazy lowest signals one can buy on disc. The T rex footsteps shake the windows in my house despite being below my hearing range with my Velodyne 12" sub. Incredible stuff. And the glass shattering sound effects in the Terminator theme can melt your tweeters too if turned up too loud. Don't take yourself too seriously for a few minutes and enjoy the noise!
Beyond that, musically this is one of the Cincinatti Pops' finest soundtrack collections. Perhaps the best. Almost all of their recordings are sonically of the highest quality (Copland: Music of America won a Grammy for best engineering), but all too often in recent years the releases have not met the standard of this album. Arrangers that don't begin to care what the composer's intent was or tacking on pre-fab endings are the worst offenders, but most of the selections here meet or exceed the quality of the original soundtracks. All around, a great soundtrack collection.

5 out of 5 stars An Adventure For Your Ears.......2004-06-01

The Cincinnati Pops do an excellent job of faithfully reproducing movie soundtracks and this album is a perfect example. In fact after listening to this CD a few times, I tracked down some of the original soundtracks because I enjoyed the selections on here, such as the "El Cid" music and "Jurrasic Park." I also really enjoyed the music from "Henry V" "Robin Hood,"and "Hunt for Red October." The different tracks go together surprisingly well, like many of the pops other thematic CD's. While it might be helpful to have seen some of the movies the soundtracks come from, it is not crucial. The added soundeffects are a little gimmicky, but fairly short and on seperate tracks, so they can be skipped. If you enjoy movie soundtracks, this is a great investment.

5 out of 5 stars Blows Away All Other Such Compilations!.......2003-04-02

"Caution: Digital Sound Effects of high levels with intrasonic frequencies to 5 Hz. Please establish safe playback levels before playing tracks [3], [5], [19], [20], and [21]. Excessive playback levels could result in damage to equipment."

The above quote is found prominantly on the back cover and is a warning not to be taken lightly. The respective tracks are awesome and should be played, as well as listened to, with great care.

A 20-bit digital recording that is perfect for surround-sound systems, "The Great Fantasy Adventure Album" is a wonder for fans of the sci-fi/fantasy film genre. Highlighting some truly landmark films, the 1994 release showcases compositions from the legends of past and contemporary film scoring. Themes from the likes of Rosza, Williams, Horner, Herrmann, and Elfman are grandiosely featured here.

The best cuts are Goldsmith's "Total Recall: Main Title", "Conan the Barbarian: Anvil of Crom" (Poledouris), and Brad Fiedel's "Terminator: Theme".

Upon hearing this trio, chills will not just go up the spine but will permeate every ounce of one's body

5 out of 5 stars The perfect movie theme collection.......2000-08-16

I have a good number of Kunzel CDs, but this one could easily be called "Mark's Favorite Movie Themes." It doesn't matter that I have many of these repeated on other CDs; it saved me the trouble of having to burn my own 'faves' disc. It's good to see Basil Polodouris' "Conan" and "Red October" themes, he's often overlooked as a film composer, in my book, and regardless what one might think of the movie, the Conan score is still probably the best thing he's ever done. And the hard-to-find "Terminator" theme is hard NOT to listen to, with its highly unusual rythmic motif. I enjoy all the music selections, but having James Horner's sublime theme from "The Rocketeer" was well worth the price of the CD by itself. This is what a movie themes CD should be, and it helps that I happen to like Kunzel's choice of selections, for once. The sound effects that typically accompany these CDs are generally annoying, but I like the sonar segue into "Red October," and the T-Rex roar that precedes "Jurassic Park" is useful for scaring kids at Halloween.

5 out of 5 stars This is the best cd I have ever bought.......1999-10-27

No words can compare how remarkable this cd is. Combined with incredible sound quality, this cd will twist and turn you emotions with every single score. i can honestly say that this disc is the perfect relaxation and energizing thing ever.

5 out of 5 stars One of the best Fabric CDs ever!.......2007-06-27

That is all. great tracks on here, the best mix from the Stanton's so far

2 out of 5 stars snore.......2007-05-30

what happened to the stantons? the cash man came knocking? i think they got a taste of American club culture in put that into their mix. perhaps that makes things fresh and interesting in Europe. i find this mix tired and predictable. there are some solid tracks on here, and if you are the type who is easily pleased and you just want a nice mix for a house party then fine. but if you are a breakbeat conniseur (?) then go elsewhere. hopefully the Plumps will keep things real. this was a total letdown.

2 out of 5 stars Letdown... totally.......2007-02-24

I have the first Stanton Sessions and that cd is one of my favorites for sure. What happened with this one? Way too much cheesy hip hop lyrics mixed over the beats. The beats aren't that good either. Not much variety, if you heard every other break mix cd out there, you heard this. I gave it a two for a couple tracks that are ok. They don't justify the purchase of this. Well, I guess theres nothing to do but suck it up, and toss it in the "I listened to it once, but forgot about it" pile.

4 out of 5 stars you'll catch your body moving to the groove before too long.......2007-02-21

[...]"The Stanton Warriors turn out a decent batch of dance tracks on their contribution to the Fabric Live series. With a dash of electro ( Kerri Chandler's "Planet Sonic") and gobs of sexy hip-hop, thick but not too dense mixing, high energy beats (Peace Division's house track `Club Therapy') and enveloping textures, "Fabric Live 30" is an awfully good mix of tracks, even if it falls short of greatness. It certainly sets itself up above the level of many of its peers, tossing in more variety than you'd expect from your run of the mill, impulse buy in the techno bin house CD. Even if it doesn't immediately grab you, you'll catch your body moving to the groove before too long. It's a fairly strong set, though its groove pulses in the back of your mind and isn't as in the foreground of your consciousness as a really great dance CD would be. However, they can't all be home runs. The Stanton Warriors have shown they know how to manipulate the turntables and make music that can keep a dance floor busy."

4 out of 5 stars Tasty.......2007-02-18

This is a pretty high energy set, rockin some edgy breakbeats throughout. There are a few bad apples among the track selection, but as a whole the mix stays right in the groove. Some of the mixing is a little abrupt, but with the tracks on this album it works well. As for the overall feel of the set, the first half is more of an electronic feel, while the latter half provides a gritty urban sound. I would definitely recommend picking up this album, it sounds fresh and is a great way to start off the beginning of a long night

Although the Dream Warriors' debut was released in 1991--the same year as De La Soul Is Dead and Definition of Sound's Love & Life--the album never received proper recognition. Mixing together jazz (the first song is "My Definition of a Boombastic Jazz Style," and it out-loops anything Us3 ever did) and pop, crossing De La's "D.A.I.S.Y. Age" sensibilities with P.M. Dawn's summery touch, and laying down one hell of a groove, the Dream Warriors stepped up to the plate--only no one showed up to play the field. Years later the album sounds just as good as it did back then. --Randy Silver

4 out of 5 stars My Definition Of A Bombastic Rap CD.......2006-12-26

I really don't know why they didn't get much credit or air play, but this CD is, in my opinion, one of the most dynamic rap cds ever produced. Their sound was a rare thing only used by a handful if not less artists. De La Soul, Digable Planets are 2 that come to mind. They had a fairly big single with My Definition of a Bombastic Jazz Style, however far from as big as it should have been. This cd is nothing but a nice happy place. There is no drama or tales of struggle, just simple fun music. This is quite a gem, pick it up, its what being unique is all about.

5 out of 5 stars The Dream Warriors! Wow! I remember this album!.......2001-11-21

it's great. i've actually looked for this album in music stores but couldn't find it until i remembered that amazon has the song title search (i didn't remember the name of the musicians). i did remember the names of 2 songs though: "Face In The Basin" and "Do Not Feed The Alligators".

The music is kind of like a laid-back rap, with similar sound to 'De La Soul' as others mentioned. i'd buy it mostly for the nostalgia factor, but also because of those crazy lyrics and the corny sound. my cousins and i listened to this stuff when we were kids and we still love it.

4 out of 5 stars Great Pick up!.......2001-08-09

I absolutely LOVE the Dream Warriors. It brings me back to the greats of early 90's rap music. I agree, they are an unremembered rap group, but this record is so fun and will bring you back too. Thier sound is a bit more progressive than most rap music of the time, but their style is one that can definitely be appreciated today. Enjoy

5 out of 5 stars It's a head-bobber!.......1999-09-13

This is a group who deserve more recognition than they have received from the hip-hop scene. Their style and flow is reminiscent of the Roots and De-La-Soul. If you like that mix of Jazzy beats with lyrical mastery, then this group is definitely not one to overlook.

5 out of 5 stars A new style.......1998-12-22

This is an album that was definently overlooked by many. I have not heard one song on here that wasn't innovative in any way. Dream Warriors stand out from all of the "pop" and "gangsta" so called hip-hop. When listening to this album, you notice a strong jazz influence. There are also tracks on here that have a mystic sound to them. Don't wait on this album any longer because this is a classic, take my word for it.
