Only partial Hollywood.......2007-07-23

Obviously, not much care was taken in compiling this collection. Are the music included really from movies produced in Hollywood? No, 'Lawrence of Arabia', 'Dr.No' and 'The good, the bad and the ugly' are not Hollywood productions. I can easily named a few great Hollywood productions with great music which are not included here, 'My fair lady', 'West side story' and 'The sound of music','Lion in Winter' (the soundtrack of these three movies are owned by Sony/BMG which issued this CD), not to mention the classics such as 'Singing in the rain', 'An American in Paris'. It seems that Sony/BMG has tried to select the music within her catalogue, or maybe only music score of the movies are under consideration, thus making this CD less attractive. Overall the music here is of good quality and worth listening to, my favourites are the music from 'Psycho', 'The Magnificent Seven' and 'Lawrence of Arabia', those selections by John Williams are also wonderful.

Essential & Transcending.......2004-04-09

Williams' elegant collection is simple, straightforward, and so very rewarding for the listener. Forget the movie soundtracks, the huge televised concerts: this is intimate music between you (the listener) and Williams guitar. Two tracks, "If" and "Cavatina" feature the ever-amazing songstress Dame Cleo Laine. These two songs alone should reward the listener for their purchase of this CD. But Williams keeps on giving with his easy sophisticated groove. All of the tracks, perhaps my favorite "kicking back on the porch with a glass of good wine watching the fireflies twinkle in the orchard" CD, are truly transcending!

This record is wonderful; simply Jessye Norman. What else can I say: loved it!

Favorite Soprano: Gorgeous Dramatic Voice.......2006-11-05

The first time I ever heard Jessye Norman sing was a recording of Dich Teure Halle from Wagner's Tannhauser, and I was immediately enchanted. She has a gorgeous ringing tone and powerful voice. However, she can also bring her voice to a delicate sweetness that other dramatic sopranos find difficult. This album is put together particularly well. I love her Carmen and Isolde here, but I cannot stop listening to the other songs either, the non-operatic ones included. This my favorite CD, and I would definitely reccomend it to anyone considering the purchase.

A MUST HAVE..........2006-02-09

The American soprano Jessye Norman was born in Augusta, Georgia (the segregated South) on September 15, 1945 in a family of amateur musicians; her mother a pianist, her father a singer in a local choir.

Norman received a scholarship to Howard University (a historically black university in Washington, D.C.) -NOT INDIANA-, graduating in 1967 with a degree in music. The following year, she won the ARD International Music Competition in Munich. She made her operatic debut in 1969 as Elisabeth in Richard Wagner's Tannhäuser at the Berlin State Opera, and in subsequent years performed with various German and Italian opera companies. She returned to the US to make her professional concert debut at Lincoln Center in 1973.

Amazing Voice.......2005-07-06

Jessye Norman has possibly the greatest voice I have ever heard. Being a bass/baritone, I usually shy away from higher voices (especially tenors), but I find this soprano to be flooring. For being a classicaly trained vocalist (she attended Indiana University) Ms. Norman has an incredibly versatile voice. In this album alone, she sings broad French arias, light Mozart, spirituals, and Broadway. Each is done superbly. Out of every track, her rendition of "Ave Maria" is my favorite. She sings it so tenderly and intimately, it is like she is singing it directly in front of you. You will be moved, certainly.

I suggest this CD to everyone, a fan of classical music or not. It is important for everyone to have these songs to relax, calm down, or to just listen to. You would not regret it.

Forerunner to Sky.......2006-02-23

This CD is really a compilation of the 3 "experimental" albums John Williams did before his venture with the Prog Rock group Sky. So if you are a classical purist then you might not like this CD. Otherwise, it's a rare combination of songs from "Changes", "The Height Below", and "Travelling" - the 3 albums that eventually led to Sky. Also, a few songs from his work with Cleo Laine are thrown in.

The overall style of this CD is like a soundtrack (such as the music from "The Deer Hunter"). But it still features great guitar work as well (several from Bach). Williams' playing is clean and crisp - whether he is playing a straight classical piece or doing an accompanyment. You will see he is accomplished in both roles with this CD. Classical purists might consider this "light weight" but the rest of us call it accessable and interesting.

This is an excellent CD.

Definitly one of my favourite Williams recordings. His bach is so finely detailed, the voices clearly maintained, seperate and together! The Passagio/Presto from suite 1 is the best! I always listened to the Richter piano (curse that instrument) recording of the presto from a Bach italian concerto and wondered at the beautiful way in which all those voices interweave etc etc. Here on the guitar is a smaller scaled version, There is still hope for guitarists!!

A mixed bag again; there's a better first choice though........1999-12-23

Silva Screen has been churning out a very large number of new recordings of film scores since the mid-90s, and many of these albums are two-disc sets available at fairly low cost. I can think of at least one major film music critic who's consistently praised the quality of this East European orchestra. The presentation itself is remarkable; attractive, well-filled (discs are usually at least 70 minutes long each), and each set comes with excellent documentation. But I wasn't as impressed with this set of John William's music as the two disc compilation set conducted by the maestro himself (titled John William's Greatest Hits 1969-1999 I think from Sony Music). Orchestral bass definition isn't always clearly heard- sounded fuzzy in the lower registers- and ensemble could be tightened up considerably. In fact, Ensemble in a few tracks were nearly sloppy; I positively cringed at the motocycle scherzo cue from the Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade track! That cue- one of the most memorable film music pieces I've heard as they evoke memories of Harrison Ford getting chased by Wechmacht on motorcycles- sounded more like a rehearsal session than an actual recording.

Having said that, the disc isn't without things that I greatly enjoyed. Aside from that this set, like many others from the recording company, is exceptionally well-filled with a collection of pieces somewhat similar to the Sony two-disc set (see above), and there are a couple of very bright spots. The chorus from Empire of the Sun: Exsulstate Justi is given a magnificently robust rendition from the Crouch End Festival Chorus (even better than John William's original recording in 1987, in my opinion), and the recording of Hymn of the Fallen with the same chorus is very good too.

There's also the regular staple of other commonly heard tracks that are unfortunately better recorded elsewhere, including the main theme from Superman, (yet another) suite of music from the Star Wars trilogy, including the main theme and the Imperial March. For this, however, there was a rare gem- a beautifully played cue from the Empire Strikes Back, Han Solo and the Princess. This track is much less commonly heard, and it certainly evoked memories of the Millinieum Falcon taking off from the medical frigate at the end of that motion picture. I greatly enjoyed this particular track!
