The belief that chanting the name of God dissolves the boundaries between the mundane and the transcendental is universal. In India, singing mantras is an art, and each devotee is encouraged to bring their own musical knowledge to this practice. Krishna Das, a masterful singer and keyboard player, has produced several ethno-techno trance recordings, and has created mellow musical settings for some of the oldest poems known to (wo)man by combining ragas and western scales, sitars, and folky acoustic guitar. The tracks combine traditional Indian and Tibetan melodies with more Western rhythm tracks--"Devi 'Rave'" has a rollicking Afro-Arabic rhythm, while "Hara Hara Mahadev" bubbles along on an R&B backbeat, and is melodically similar to the children's song "If You're Happy and You Know It." --j. poet

4 out of 5 stars Opera for Aficianados as well as Newbies.......2007-06-11

If you are looking for peaceful, beautiful music this is for you. It is a delightful mix of some of opera's most memorable moments. Long time opera fans will be familiar with most of the arias and newcomers to opera will recognize music that has become identified with movies and commercials.

5 out of 5 stars superb! .......2007-05-12

If you love wonderful operatic moments then this cd is a great buy for all of the wonderful and spectacular music on it. You get two cds for the price of one great opera cd, and all of the talented singers that were taken and put on these tracks do definate justice to all of the composers listed. A great cd to add to your collection especially if you are an aspiring singer or a student in music. Absolutely Fantastic!

5 out of 5 stars beatiful music.......2007-02-23

former reviews are no exaggeration, this is the most beautiful music I have come across. I have many opera CDs but this is one I never tire of.
I listen to the CD everyday and it is always soothing, uplifting and inspiring. I wish I could find another as wonderful.

A lush musical journey into Hindu spiritualism, Pilgrim Heart encompasses Shiva chants, Hare Krishna mantras, and chants given a modern twist. Krishna Das and his myriad guest musicians (including a female chorus dubbed the Kirtan Posse) incorporate Indian instruments, African percussion, electronics, even bass and guitar, into serene, richly layered songs that provide good background music for meditation or relaxation. Unlike some of Krishna Das's other recorded music, this album is even-keeled, although the repeated use of Hare Krishna chants wears thin at times, but the music generally provides a satisfying antidote for the stresses of the modern world. One nice surprise is the upbeat, soukous-flavored "Ring Song" that ends the album on an energetic note. --Bryan Reesman

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars great intro album.......2006-11-09

This album is not consistant. If you want a whole CD of one style, this is NOT it. if you are planning to use this for yoga or anything, stop now. What it IS is a whole CD of really excellent musical chanting, ranging from funny to tearful, and from belly dance level rythms to meditative.

My two favorites on the CD both have Sting-Ji (yes, Sting.. the musician.. him!) singing on them, but i swear thats almost coincidence. They are the MahaMantra (the Hare Krishna one) chanted in medley with Amazing Grace, and "the ring song" (about Hanuman finding Sita) which had me fall on the floor laughing the first time i heard it, and i have since decided is a good one to dance to.

Because this CD features a wide range of styles, and a variety of chants, it is a good choice if you want a great "listen to" album, or an intro to Krishna Das and the different styles of chant music out there. Since most of the album is dancable rythms, it would also be a good dance, raks sharki (belly dance), or excersize CD.

5 out of 5 stars Can listen to over and over.......2006-04-19

I always want to listen to music to relax me, but most of it puts me in a coma. The one thing I really liked this CD was that it relaxed me yet was energizing. I have tried to sleep to this CD and cannot do it!

I also like that modern sounds are fused with the new age sounds. I think that is what makes this CD so energizing. I want to dance and meditate at the same time!

5 out of 5 stars Play it loud; play it often!.......2005-08-17

I never imagined that I would be so drawn to this kind of chanting. My mental image of people chanting "Hare Krishna" was not very positive. Too many of my encounters were with people in saffron robes trying to sell me incense and wanting me to come to some feast. When someone suggested that we use some cuts from this CD at a party after a retreat, I was a little reluctant. Boy was I wrong! This is some of the most joyous wonderful chanting/music I have encountered. This music is clearly able to affect out consciousness. The cut "Devi Rave" with its joyous chanting of "Jaya Jagatambe. . ." is an expression of what is called "Living Daylight" in some traditions. It is hard to sit still when listening to it. My wife and I usually start chanting along; sometimes we start dancing. Wild and wonderful!

The last cut, "The Ring Song" is cute and playful, but doesn't stand up to repeated playing the way the other cuts do. I listen to it about every tenth playing of the CD. Still, it doesn't distract from this wonderful CD.

This is very heart opening music

5 out of 5 stars Fabulous.......2005-07-18

This is my favorite Krishna Das cd. A wonderful selection of music, rythms & chants. Very hypnotic & easy to listen to. Highly recommend.

5 out of 5 stars Invigorate your Spirit by flowing with the Sacred.......2005-02-10

This is not your typical relaxation music. These spiritual rhythms do an excellent job of redirecting an anxious racing mind and will help you refocus mental energies in the most healing and energetic way.

I totally disagree with the earlier reviewer that felt these selections will leave you strengthless and depressed. I found quite the opposite to be true! If you don't find yourself singing along, you WILL find yourself humming these rhythms long after you listen to them. Although a bit perseverative, the Kirtan Posse female chorus adds a soul touching devotional to the selections.

Mountain Hare Krishna, which incorporates the song "Amazing Grace" and features articulate harmonies from Sting (Sting-ji) is simply beautiful and very uplifting.

Although the Ring Song sounds like something that would be played on a Hindu cruise ship, it adds an element of whimsy to this spiritual collection and ends this musical spiritual journey on a most energetic note.

Start your morning off with this CD. It will invigorate your spirit.

I heard One Track Heart and had to buy it. I saw Krishna Das at a kirtan in Sedona in April '99, and bought Pilgrim Heart at the concert. I listen to it, and sing to it many times a day. Always on repeat mode!I especially love playing it in the car. It puts me in complete divine BLISS. The vibration of the chants, and KD's velvety smooth voice resonate inside my being for hours after listening. I play it for all of my friends, regardless of their music taste, and everyone loves it. Thank you for putting this CD out.It is a must for yoga students, and teachers, and those who enjoy kirtan. NAMASTE.

What a serendidist's delight to have "accidently" discovered Krishna Das. Tears will roll down your cheeks as you recognise the universality of Om Namaha Shivaiya the tital cut. I asked to play a bit at a party the other night and listening, everyone wanted more as we gypsies fell into a deep space of reverence whilst hearing the Mother Song, ..."My heart wrapped in your blanket sky, We're here but there's no trace, Everywhere I turn you kiss my face". If you love this music you will surely resonate with Peter Makena's "In Love" and newest, "Love Songs and Sutras"

5 out of 5 stars Ghiaurov rules....! And he deserves more than 5 stars!.......2002-04-29

I used to have a great deal of this material on vinyl LP, so I'm grabbing this up as soon as possible. London's transfers are usually impeccable, so I expect no problems with the sounds- and the sound on the originals was spectacular. Ghiaurov seemed to me to have a fine feel for this music and the voice is something to die for- huge, robust, soaring... yet capable of subtle beauties many other basses ignore.

Frankly, Ghiaurov is the standard by which I judge other basses in this genre. Maxim Mikhailov and Mark Reizen come to mind as incredible voices and interpreters, as well as Boris Gmyria. Reizen especially had the quintessential basso cantante voice, with a beauty and range of dynamics that is hard to resist. Nicolai Ghiaurov was a fine successor to these lofty singers and I doubt anyone who loves this music will be disappointed. The Song of the Volga Boatmen is superbly done, with beauty, compassion, and a soaring vocal line that really has to be heard to be believed. Stenka Razin also is highly recommended.

I remember listening to these songs over and over; not knowing what most of them were about, but getting lost in the emotions and majesty of this music. In other words... you like this genre? And bass voices? Buy this!

1 out of 5 stars The worst cd.......2002-02-20

The cd has nothing going for it if your american because you can't understand anything and there is no beats.

      5 out of 5 stars nicely done!.......1999-02-11

Any Russians out there? If not, that's ok too: the beauty of Russian romances presented here can be understood through your heart. While the first CD consists of piano-accompanied songs written by great Russian composers (Tchaikovsky, Borodin, et al), the second CD is rather a cross-over album of Russian (and one Ukrainian) folk songs, including, of course, the famous "Dark Eyes". Both albums are true jewels. With perfect clarity and diction, Ghiaurov's splendid bass glows over exquisite melodies; his passion for them is real and heartfelt. From tragic "For the shores of your far-off native land" to satiric "The worm" Ghiaurov's interpretations are just as gripping as Chaliapin's. The vocal skills are amazing: listen how he tenderly softens his voice on "Amidst the noisy stir of the ball" and expand it thunderously on "Sten'ka Razin"! It is undoubtedly one of the best song collections coming from the best Boris Godunov of our time. Don't miss it.

      5 out of 5 stars Eddy Sings Opera!...Mozart...Haydn...Wagner..and More!..Fabulous Find For Fans.......2006-07-20

Fans of Nelson Eddy's classic musical films, will be in heaven when they hear his golden tones on this collection of the Operatic Arias and Concert Songs recorded between 1939 and 1944.
Eddy was not what you would call a booming Baritone, but wow, what a voice. Sweet, smooth, breathtaking. Gorgeous!

His masterful rendition of the Arias, and Concert Songs in Italian, English, German and French are impeccable. Whatever the emotion, sadness, joy, etc, Eddy captures it. You will feel the story in the words. Some are very solemn and moving, others are upbeat and will leave you smiling. Enjoy 2 from Mozart's "Marriage of Figaro"(Non Piu Andrai/Se Vuol Ballare), Haydn's "The Creation",2 from Wagner("Jerum! Jerum"/"Evening Star") ,Moussorgsky, several from Tchaikovsky including "Don Juan's Serenade. You can see the complete list of 20 tracks in the buying info, but some of the other highlights, I thoroughly enjoyed are Schubert's "Serenade" and "Ave Maria", "Chanson Du Toreador", Bizet(from Carmen)and "Hopak"(Moussorgsky).

The original recordings are over 60 years old. This CD is a wonderful digital transfer. The album will give you over 70 minutes of enjoyment. It also come with a nice little bio booklet, detailing the singing career of Nelson Eddy, and the track listings, with the composer and the year Eddy first recorded it. The only thing it is missing, is the credits for the fine orchestras and musicians accompanying Eddy. I would have liked to have known who they were. None the less a fabulous and 5 star find for fans of Nelson Eddy, and a nice taste of some familiar Operatic pieces.

      Enjoy....Laurie

      5 out of 5 stars Nelson Eddy's operatic recordings.......2004-01-07

This CD contains all of Nelson Eddy's recordings of classical music. However, given that he recorded over 200 songs, this is a small amount of his recorded legacy. Also note that, other than the Mozart (Italian), the Strauss (German), and the last 4 selections in French, the rest of these selections were recorded in English, although Eddy could and did sing them in the original languages. Despite what the previous reviewer said, these recordings are not from "the early years", when Nelson Eddy was an opera singer. These recordings are from the 1940's. Nelson Eddy had performed in his last operas in 1935, and he was almost never associated with actual opera on film. He performed yearly in concerts, solely of classical repertoire, from before his national fame, until the early 1950's. He was a very popular radio performer in the 1930's and 1940's. He sang many more operatic pieces/classical songs on radio (usually in their original language) which he never recorded. I, for one, regret that he did not record more from his classical repertoire, because that essential part of appreciating his art is mostly gone forever. My point is, that these songs do not give a full sense of the wide range of Eddy's work in the non-popular areas of song.
The liner notes are pretty good, although there are some errors in them.

5 out of 5 stars Nelson Eddy : The Opera Years.......2001-10-01

Ah Sweet Mystery. A trip back in time. Is there any music medium Nelson Eddy did not excel in? First opera, concerts, movies, radio, tv, nightclubs. He was the master of them all. This is a great introduction to the early years when he was opera's leading and most exciting baritone.

5 out of 5 stars equal to volume I.......2000-12-08

This C.D. like Volume I before it is a very high quality, wonderfully diverse album. The pair compliment eachother beautifully, and stand alone strong. I would recomend it to anyone who already loves Opera, and to any new innitiate. I bought Vol. I and Vol. II on a whim and have not been sorry. The piece by Wagner at the end is worth the purchase price alone for this one.

5 out of 5 stars Latest from the King's College Choir.......2006-12-21

I am immensely fond of the various Christmas albums put out by the Choir of King's College at the University of Cambridge. They represent the English tradition at its finest. I especially like the variants of the 9 Lessons and Carols in which biblical lessons are interspersed with the choral renditions. This tradition relates back to 1918 and has been broadcast(and telecast) worldwide since 1928, so I am not alone in my appreciation. This album presents an entirely new body of music in that it contains newer and unfamiliar compositions, some of which have been commissioned in past years for this program. There are 15 selections on the first disk and 7 on the second disk. Like any selection, some of the cuts are better than others, but all are quite beautiful. Whether any will become classics of the caliber of the more established material remains to be seen. But with Stephen Cleobury in charge, as he has been since 1982, long-time fans of the Choir know that a solid and quite enjoyable musical package awaits--especially at this holiday time of year.

4 out of 5 stars This may not be appropriate easy listening for trimming the tree, but it is definitely a fine recording. .......2005-12-29

This is definitely not a CD of traditional Christmas Carols, but I feel it's a little harsh to claim that only two pieces on the entire recording are "melodic". Frankly, I don't even know what that means. To my ears all of the compositions here have what can be called a melody. Personally, I adore the "Fayrfax Carol" by Thomas Ades and cannot see how it would fail to fall under even the most close-minded definition of the word "melodic".

I agree with the previous reviewer that many of the pieces are harmonically abstract but, honestly, what do you expect from a CD of music written by contemporary composers for one of the finest choirs in the world? I would hope there would be no arrangements of "I Saw Three Ships".

If you're looking for a CD of traditional carols, there is no shortage of recordings. However, if you're looking for well-crafted, forward-thinking, modern compositions performed by a group on the cutting edge of choral music, look no further.

4 out of 5 stars Flawless performance of unusual (though not always good) music.......2005-12-04

The Choir of Kings College is one of the best in the world--so of course the recording will sound excellent. In fact, I own several recordings by Kings College and they perform their best on this one. The purity of the sound and superb diction are just unsurpassed. But the music is just not that good. It's often too harmonically strange, overdramatic, and, frankly, too modern.

That's not to say there is not good music--actually, some of the best pieces of music are on this recording. Highlights include: Chilcott's haunting "The Shepherd's Carol" (which is one of the only two melodic pieces on the entire recording), Part's energetic "Bogoroditse Dyevo", Dove's dramatic "The Three Kings", Rutter's typical, but comparatively good "What sweeter music" (the other melodic piece), Weir's majestic "Illumniare Jerusalem" and Woolrich's sublime "Spring in Winter". There are a few honorable mentions--Berkeley's "In Wintertime" & Goehr's "Carol for St. Stephen"--but the other half of the recording is pretty much awful. The choir & Stephen Cleobury sound good trying--but the composers haven't given them much of value to work with.

An interesting addition to a music lover's collection, but I can't imagine it being enjoyable to someone looking for Christmas carols.
