Customer Reviews:
Great stuff!.......2005-06-17
Cool. Right from the first note this is working. The recording and production are excellent. The mood and instrumentation are superb. I like the guitar, piano and the horn work especially.
There is beautiful jazz is at hand when listening to this gem of a Smooth Jazz project, and it's just the thing for the first cup of coffee or the last brandy. The rhythm section lays it down soft and sweet, giving the keyboards all the room you could ask for to define and elaborate the changes, big fat keys, great sound. The sax is the perfect compliment, well played and not at all outside the changes, getting just complicated enough at the end of the tune to give a bit more impact. Nothing here to jangle the nerves, smooth and easy.
The wonderful melodic variety provided by the piano and great interludes that are soft but sultry from the saxophone. The bass-line is also amazing just for the fact that it knows when it's pertinent to add itself and when not to. The drums are just perfect in keeping the tempo with the other blend of instruments provided.
All in all. Great stuff!
This is reely good........2005-03-11
I listened to this with my parents when were driving. My favorite is Joy Ride. I want to play piano like this someday. I am going to practice so that i can make a cd lik this. Sarah
Awesome album.......2004-08-09
I was fortunate enough to spend the last week working with Greg at RMVJC. From the moment I heard "Voice Dance" (not on this album), I knew this guy was good. I got to sing one of his songs under his direction, and that inspired me to buy this album from him.
It's a great piece of musical talent. His compositions are brilliant and "Child" is sweet and beautiful. Jasperse is a genius and this album shows off his talent brilliantly. Everybody should buy this. Seriously.
Sooooooooo Awesome!.......2004-05-04
I absolutely LOVED it! And i MEAN loved it! I was fortunate enough to hear Jasperse play the piano live a couple times, and I have been waiting to hear a collection of HIS own material since the first moment I heard a chord from him. It's a rare, wonderful experience to hear a great, thoughtful piano virtuoso these days- I find- and Jasperse's sound, style, and musicianship are unparalleled to the other greats I've been enjoying over the years- in my opinion.
The production of the album itself is excellent- the sound is awesome. I loved the arrangements- i particularly loved the beautiful strings and oboe. You're gonna LOVE the unbelievably gorgeous vocals and chord changes! I thought it was smart to have "Tournesol" be the title track, because it was my favorite. Again, BEAUTIFUL chord changes- just a great song! Also, "Fields and Foothills" -literally gave me the chills when I heard it- awesome!
He only sings lyrics on one track towards the end -and I wish he'd sung some more- he's got a really great voice. I'm guessing he knew his piano playing and compositions would stand on their own- which, of course, they did. There are vocals all over the album, and you'll love how they were done- tight, scat-style arranging, i guess is how i'd describe it.
The album is obviously the product of hard work (i would think), but I hope Jasperse enjoyed making his debut solo album so that I can get another one- SOON. So, if anyone knows of any other recordings or recordings that are on the way, please put it somewhere here so I know.
This is the CD I've been talking about and showing everyone I see, so I'd definitely recommend it to anyone who enjoys great, brilliant music!
I can't wait to hear Jasperse play live again, he's a very gracious person to talk to- nice and funny, on top of the amazing abilities to write, play, sing and arrange so perfectly. But, really just an AWESOME CD!!!!!!!!

"Tournesol" is a varied and very promising first commercial effort by pianist/composer Greg Jasperse, a Chicago-based musician, arranger, singer, writer, musical director, and teacher. Mostly jazz and smooth-jazz stylings, the thirteen pieces include ensemble work with and without "scat"-type vocals, and a couple of ballads. All of the pieces are original compositions. Overall, the mood of the album is very upbeat and joyous, and the musicianship is excellent. A few of the vocals are a bit too "perky" for my taste, but I can certainly appreciate the high level of spirit and energy embodied in those pieces. Along with piano and keyboards, the instrumentation includes guitar, bass, percussion, drums, strings, and woodwinds. "Joy Ride" features Grant Geissman on guitar and Gary Meek on sax along with Jasperse on piano. It has an easy, upbeat mood and infectious rhythm. "Arbor Drive" has a Celtic feel, and includes whistle, recorder, and violin - a charming piece. "B Natural" is one of my favorites. Played by a full ensemble, it has a slinky, smooth jazz feel. "Garden Waltz" is another favorite. With piano, bass, guitar, and percussion, the piece has a relaxed flow and a gentle mood. "Uncle John" is a gorgeous wordless ballad for piano, keyboard, oboe, and violin - bittersweet and gentle. The title track could easily become a smooth jazz classic. An ensemble piece for piano, flute, cello, bass, and percussion, it reminds me of some of Ira Stein's "chamber jazz" compositions. "Child" is a lovely song with Jasperse doing vocals as well as piano. It is a simple love song to a child, full of love and wonder.
"Tournesol" is an excellent beginning, and I'm looking forward to seeing where Greg Jasperse takes us. He is obviously very comfortable with a wide range of musical styles and approaches, and does an exceptional job. Good stuff!
