About the Artist
Renowned naturalist and sound designer Dr. Bernie Krause has traveled the world capturing the soundscapes of exotic natural environments. Dr. Krause began his groundbreaking work in bioacoustics and environmental recording in the late 1960's, and much of his work has been accomplished with techniques and technologies that he personally developed. His "In A Wild Sanctuary" (1970) recording earned a place in history as being the first recording to use environmental sounds as both a central component of orchestration and as a statement about the environment.

Dr. Krause's diverse achievements include 10 recordings for The Nature Company that have enjoyed over $24 million in gross sales over a period of 6 years. Development of the audio technology innovation known as the Intelligent Show System (for public exhibitions and installations), and his Music and Word Series of spoken word documents that include "Ishi - The Last Yahi." Dr. Krause recently published the book "Wild Soundscapes" (2002) that includes a full-length CD featuring a sampling of natural sounds.

Product Description
The camp biologist warned us about sighting jaguar scat and finding paw prints along the numerous game trails in the forest here. But none had actually seen the creature. Late one moonless night, after a colleague and I had been recording for several hours, we decided to split off and find separate sites to investigate. As I walked down the trail, I caught a whiff of the musky scent large cats often leave on vegetation as markings in their territory. Problem was that I kept smelling it as I walked - which was a bit unusual. I never heard or saw the animal, but when I set up my mics on the trail and then sat down to record some thirty feet away, the creature emerged from the woods, stepped up to the mic and performed like a pro for what seemed like an eternity. Eventually, it disappeared into the nighttime forest, leaving only the sounds of insects, frogs, owls, and a trembling naturalist sitting on the trail.

AMAZON DAYS, AMAZON NIGHTS. The richest mix of creature sounds comes from the tropical rainforests of the planet. Over time, the resident birds, frogs, mammals, insects, and reptiles learn to vocalize in unique relationships to each other - much like instruments in an orchestra. This biophony is as beautiful as any music heard in the major symphony halls of the world. In the second cut, Amazon Nights, a jaguar approaches our microphone only to discover it isn't particularly edible.

    Album Description

Jaguar sniffs my mic... The camp biologists told usabout sighting jaguar scat and finding paw prints along the numerous paths transecting the research outpost we were visiting. But none had ever seen it. Late one moonless night, after Ruth Happel, my colleague, and I had been recording for a couple of hours, we decided to separate and try different sites. While we were talking about strategy, Ruth abruptly quit speaking mid-sentence and sniffed the air. Grabbing my arm she whispered, "Smells like a jaguar to me." After a moment, I caught the unmistakable musky scent and began to wonder about our safety.

We were several miles from camp and otherwise alone in the forest. "I think we're being followed," she said, "but we're probably ok." After waiting several minutes to see what would develop, we heard nothing and decided to continue working into the night, since we had so little time left. Ruth went off in one direction. I in another. At some point about! a quarter mile down the trail, I set up my equipment with the mics 30 feet from where I was sitting. No sooner did I switch on my recorder than I heard something breathing in my headphones. I couldn't believe it had come that close. And then it growled; low at first. Then, with an intensity so fierce I was momentarily unable to catch my breath, it growled again. It lingered for what seemed like an eternity but it probably stood there only a moment or two. Then suddenly the animal disappeared into the forest leaving the biophony of frogs and insects pulsing in the night.
