Packed with Big Ideas about the future of mankind and dispatched with a distant, often icy veneer, Steven Spielberg's Artificial Intelligence can scarcely camouflage its roots. It was begun by the late Stanley Kubrick in the mid-'80s; Spielberg collaborated briefly a decade later, bowed out, then inherited it upon Kubrick's death in '99. And while the late auteur's cold vision seems largely intact (if now infused with Spielberg's enduring Pinocchio fetish), it's safe to say that Kubrick's often challenging musical tastes would probably not have led him to composer John Williams's doorstep. Nonetheless, the acclaimed veteran again rises to the occasion, ably demonstrating that he's hardly been indifferent to 20-odd-years of minimalism and postmodernism and that, as always, the best film music is often a subtly crafted pastiche of sensibilities and styles. Setting the tone of the film's robotically enhanced not-so-distant future, "The Mecha World" crackles and glistens with Steve Reich's rhythmic urgency and John Adams's dense coloration, while "Abandoned in the Woods," "Hide and Seek," and "Rouge City" succeed by setting Williams's more traditional sense of melody against Phillip Glass's hypnotic arpeggios. There's also a sense that the composer has craftily evoked the ghost of Kubrick music past and 2001 in particular; "Replicas" and "Stored Memories" bring to mind Ligeti, while the mournful strings of "Cybertronics" seem a ghostly echo of Khachaturian's "Gayane Ballet Suite." David Foster's ballad "For Always" (in a solo rendition by Lara Fabian and a duet between Fabian and Josh Groban) seems twice-included strictly to enhance the album's radio allure. Completists should also note that Ministry's dark contribution to the film's Flesh Fair sequence, "What About Us?" is not included on this soundtrack, but is available on their Greatest Fits compilation. Arguably Williams's most musically adventurous score since his landmark Close Encounters, A.I. should take its place among the most distinctive of the composer's long and bounteous collaboration with Spielberg. --Jerry McCulley

5 out of 5 stars The music is masterfully composed with wit, majesty, and soul.......2006-06-19

A.I. means Artificial Intelligence. But there is nothing artificial about John Williams' organically emotional score and his 17th collaboration with Steven Spielberg. A.I. studies the unique fellowship between human and machine and John has woven a musical interface. John's score pierces the mystery of a robot (mecha) child's short existence. His name is David and he never had a birthday, but was engineered to give and revieve the love of the family he is placed in. The music underlines and then transports David on his jounrey of discovery from his inception to his tanscendence and John does this with wit, majesty, and soul. John's music is of our world and of theirs and finally of a world shared by both orga and mecha. And like so many of John's scores from Spielberg's movies, you really don't need the images to have the story told to you. He is the greatest musical storyteller of all time.

5 out of 5 stars Beautiful .......2006-02-20

This is a wonderful score. It features Josh Groban, Lara Fabian, and of course the master... John Williams.

I would definately say this is one of his best. It reminds me of some of the other Spielberg collaboration scores. Mainly, Empire of the Sun, and War of the Worlds. Lots of the score is wonderful emotional underscoring. It's very complex, and full of interesting scales and keys. Of course, there is plenty of gorgeous thematic material to make the score complete. Honestly, I have never heard a bad John Williams score. Come to think of it, I've never heard one that was less than brilliant and amazing. Really, give this a listen.

Please vote me helpful!

4 out of 5 stars John Williams does his best Minimalist Impersonation with Fine Results.......2006-02-05

If you're at all familiar with various work by John Williams, then you might be surprised at his soundtrack for the Spielberg movie A.I. Artificial Intelligence. Here Williams seems to shy away from his usual heroic, orchestral canvasses and focuses more on repetitive, rhythmic music with a much more subdued feel to it. Some people might be reminded of minimalist composer Phillip Glass but it's not always Glass that Williams emulates here, it's another major figure in the minimalist music movement, John Adams. Even if Williams emulates others at times, it's still pure John Williams throughout.

Of course Williams, just like Steven Spielberg, can't help but pour on the schmaltz once in a while. The main theme of the film is the one used for the song " For Always ". When this music is played by piano and orchestra it's quite beautiful. When the soprano Barbara Bonney sings it with wordless vocals, it's very evocative of the mood in the film. HOWEVER, I have no idea what John Williams was thinking when he basically turns this beautiful, simple theme into a corny pop song. Oh wait, I know exactly what he was thinking, he was trying to generate a pop hit! Ugh. When Lara Fabian sings " For Always " on track 5, you grind your teeth and barely make it through. When on track 13, Lara Fabian is joined by Josh Groban for a duet version of the same song, it becomes intolerable schmaltz at it's worst.

So yes, there is much satisfying work here by everyone's most lovable film composer John Williams, just don't listen to tracks 5 and 13 so your musical sensibilities won't be irreparably damaged!

The last word from me, A.I., terrific soundtrack that rivals Williams' best, sayonara!

5 out of 5 stars Will one day be considered among the best he's written.......2005-12-29

This score is a masterpiece. Although many critics found Steven Spielberg's film to be uneven, I feel that the score perfectly gives it heart. The score helps to understand what the film is all about -- a boy's love for his "mother."

This score by John Williams will one day be considered among the best he's written. Highly underrated, yet greatly poignant.

I agree with other reviewers who have warned that this is not in the Star Wars / Indiana Jones vein. If you're looking for big, bombastic symphonic music, look elsewhere. This is very sentimental, but beautifully done music. It demonstrates John Williams' talent for matching the music to the film's intention. As his resume' demonstrates, John Williams can write music for just about every film, including a misunderstood "Spielberg/Kubrick" collaboration.

"The Reunion" (final track) is one of the best tracks of orchestra/piano music ever written. The lullaby-like song is the same melody as was used in "For Always," and it is achingly beautiful.

Appropriately, this final track is played in the film while David being (finally) reunited with his "mother."

4 out of 5 stars Almost Impeccable.......2004-04-26

John Williams continues in the fine tradition of his previous work. This sondtrack is finely balanced, with delicate medleys, haunting themes, and some lullaby pieces that are almost enough to make one weep. Contrary to many of his previous works (Star Wars, Superman, et al,) Mr. Williams avoided writing loud, brassy fanfares that would have deeply conflicted with the dark, pensive nature of this film.
Several tracks stand out in this masterpiece. The twin versions of "For Always," one featuring Lara Fabian and the other featuring Josh Groban in a duet with Ms. Fabian are wonderfully pure. In solo form, Lara's voice is wonderfully smooth and has a subtle almost untrained quality that lends a genuineness to her singing. In the duet, Mr. Groban's silky smooth baritone perfectly offsets Lara's clear soprano. The penultimate song, titled "The Reunion" is a stunning, gorgeous lullaby of a piece that features a plaintive, almost childish piano theme. The simplicity is subtlely complex as the theme winds through an entire emotional range, from triumphant happiness to simple joy to black despair, and finally back into an almost heartbreaking lullaby.
Mr. Williams has displayed a wide variety of musical styles in this soundtrack. For fans of his that are desiring a "Star Wars" fanfare and overpowering orchestral pieces, this soundtrack is not for you. I personally prefer this collection to most of his other works.

Elmer Bernstein, among the greatest of the golden age film composers, has lamented that there's not enough "artistry" in soundtracks today. He abhors the pop hit collections that pass for movie music albums, and the man's got a point. Perhaps he'd go for Horner's score to Phil Alden Robinson and W. P. Kinsella's fairytale ode to fathers, sons, and baseball. It's as evocative as the film itself, a shimmering corn field or a late-afternoon fly ball in every note. It's warm ("The Cornfield" is sweet, subtle, heartbreaking--like an echo, really), fun ("Old Ball Players" recalls Randy Newman's Ragtime score), and stirring ("The Place Where Dreams Come True" doesn't need a father-and-son game of catch to move you). A gem. No, a diamond! --Robert Wilonsky

5 out of 5 stars Probably one of the best soundtracks ever!.......2006-08-16

God the score to this movie makes me cry everytime I listen to it and even the movie makes me cry also. Field of Dreams is such a classic!

5 out of 5 stars Sweet Sorrow.......2006-05-26

I've watched a boatload of films in my 49 years and heard countless film scores...but this is the cream of the crop (no pun intended). James Horner captures perfectly the ache and longing for the slowing of time's relentless march forward. "The Drive Home" is like an audio companion for all the years that have melted into the ether. I've been reduced to tears by this music and it's never far from the cd player. That speaks volumes, as I have over 2,000 discs...mostly rock. Horner's music stands tall with the film - and without. He should have won the Oscar that year. My father passed 12 years ago and this music is like having him back. I'm gushing - but the music is that good!

4 out of 5 stars Disappointed.......2006-05-09

I wonder if the two reviewers who said they were disappointed in this soundtrack watched the film? My guess is that they did not. The film was ENHANCED by the James Horner score and it would have been hurt by anything that was not light and subtle. It is a unique and amazing film and the score is a perfect match. By the way, the bigwigs at Universal nearly died when they heard it and then were equally stunned when they asked Horner for the written score and he had to admit that none existed!

WONDERFUL MUSIC!

4 out of 5 stars Let's Get Ready To Dream.......2005-06-12

I have to admit that James Horner's score for "Field Of Dreams" is touching. In fact the two main melodies are very catchy: one of them is first heard in 'The Cornfied' and the other one is heard in full in the title track 'Field Of Dreams'. I also like 'Old Ball Players', a very nice swing tune very reminiscent of the 40s or the 50s, orchestrated by the late Billy May (from the "Batman" and "The Green Hornet" T.V. shows in the 60s). In fact, this is a good album.
However, I gave it four stars because the score is sometimes too quiet for my taste. Tracks like the very 'Field Of Dreams', 'The Timeless Street' (which sports another interesting melody), 'The Drive Home', and 'Night Mists' sound too atmospheric that sometimes I wish I had my bed nearby.
Don't get me wrong, this is a Horner album that is worth listen to, especially because the album finishes with 'The Place Where Dreams Come True', a lengthy track that swells with marvel and reflection, with the two melodies I mentioned earlier joined together making us feel touched. The end credits also gives the album a great close with a medley of the major themes.
In the end, this is one of James Horner's finest works in spite of the aforementioned quieter tracks.

5 out of 5 stars Wow, this one still makes me remember..................2002-08-15

I remember sitting there, in a darkened lobby of a hospital room in Joliet, Illinois. My grandpa was dying of cancer in the next room and I was a sad sixth grader who needed some escapism, and fast. I remember watching Field of Dreams that day but, most of all, I remember the music and how it blended so perfectly with the film. It was the first time I ever cried during a film.

Call it a classic case of a young kid needing to vent a little, but I will always remember the relief that film brought to me. Years later I bought the soundtrack and with it came the memory of my grandfather.

The music on this cd is poetic and spell-binding. If you are on the verge of buying this cd, let me allow myself to give you the friendly push that helps you decide.

Even if you are one of those countless folks who considers Kevin Costner a bad actor, don't take it out on the musical score. This cd is a dream, pun intended. I hope you enjoy it as much as I have.

5 out of 5 stars Purists may hate me, but..........2007-01-30

these songs sound terrific remixed! Who better to do the remixing then Owen Bradley, who produced the original tracks. There are those who bemoan that the songs have been remixed, but the original versions are available in pristine form elsewhere. These are slight variations on the originals, and the result is a freshening up of the terrific performances. If you love Patsy Cline's music, you'll love this disc!

4 out of 5 stars worth listening.......2006-11-11

though this is an old record, but it is still worth listening, esp the title " Crazy" now seems become popular again.

4 out of 5 stars Why change the background?.......2004-10-01

The soundtrack is great, because of Patsy's voice. I don't understand why they had to change the background for the movie- All they had to do was use the original 4-Star material that Patsy recorded. Maybe they weren't able to do so, due to copywrights and such. Whatever the case, even if I like the original backgrounds better, they are an interesting change. My favorite track is "San Antiono Rose." It's always been one of my favorite Patsy songs and it sounds great with an alternate background. I recommend this album to add to your Patsy collection if you are a fan!!

In the years before rock (and even for a few years after), the album charts were full of original Broadway cast LPs and soundtracks of the film versions of those Broadway musicals. And the soundtrack to 1955's Oklahoma! was one of the biggest--hitting No. 1 for a month that year--and becoming part of the consciousness of darn near every Baby Boomer whose folks owned a record player over the next five or so years. Gordon MacRae and Shirley Jones (in her film debut) were so good together, they repeated the formula (well, after Frank Sinatra dropped out) in the following year's film version of another Rodgers & Hammerstein classic, Carousel. Every song here--from "Oh! What a Beautiful Morning " to the closing title track--is a gem, and whether it's "People Will Say We're in Love" or "The Farmer and the Cowman," these are the most familiar--and definitive--versions. You even get the rousing overture. --Bill Holdship

5 out of 5 stars OKLAHOMA! st is a classic corner stone to every collection!.......1999-07-04

OKLAHOMA! was on best selling lists for years. It seems that everyone who grew up with LPs during 50s and 60s had a copy. It is the best recorded version of the show. JONES, McGRAE and the rest were all great. As is the full bodied Oscar winning scoring by Jay Blackton (although one wonders what someone like Alfred Newman would have done with this score). One of the earliest 12 inch stereo Lps unfortunatly has its downside. Because of space limitations some songs are edited. Other selections (reprises, finale, etc)are excluded all together. It would be wonderful if the original tracks could be recovered and a new expanded release be prepared. It would easily fill a 70 minute cd.

4 out of 5 stars Wish there was more music from the film.......1999-05-29

Oklahoma! as a film was quite entertaining, but the record could include only small portions of some songs, such as Kansas City and Out of my Dreams. As presented in the film these numbers were great.

5 out of 5 stars Music Poetry Romance.......2007-03-08

Don't be put off by the negative comments judge for yourdelf as I did. I found this by accident looking for some romantic music for my lady and that is exactly what I found. Now I need to see the film. The music conjures up such a feeling, relax listen and enjoy. Imagine moonlight skys, the sea gently lapping along the shoreline, candlelit dinners with the one you love. This will leave you with a warm feeling and if not then you will not know romance. The poetry is warm sensitive and well read, a bonus to the CD.

The musical score is haunting without resorting to melancholy. It befits Pablo Neruda's timeless poems. Highly recommended, even if not all of the poetry readings are well executed.

What is this trash?! This film is beautiful but the soundtrack sucks big time. They should have used the actor who was playing Pablo Neruda to read the poems in ITALIAN! It's a beautiful and romantic language but no..they screw it up with actors from the U.S. OMG! I HATE JULIA ROBERTS! she makes the soundtrack even worse. Jerry Goldsmith's chilling soundtrack music for Richard Donner's 1976 Antichrist-themed thriller The Omen was very nearly the score that never was; an unusual, last-minute budget extension was granted solely to secure the composer's services. That decision turned out to be one of the wisest the studio could make. Goldsmith's music would go on to score him his first Oscar ® and a Grammy award and become the crucial thematic glue that held the entire Omen trilogy together. Standing the traditional requiem form on its head, Goldsmith in essence created Satanic liturgical music. As chorally ominous as Orff's Carmina Burana, yet infused with the composer's own compelling sense of drama and color, The Omen instantly became both a genre classic and one of the musician's greatest achievements. Varese's 25th anniversary edition has largely resequenced the track order to match the film and expanded it by nearly a third with seven previously unreleased cues. These new tracks add dimensions of both pastoral calm and mounting suspense, making the familiar "Ave Satani" theme even darker and more spine tingling by contrast. Edition producer Robert Townson's detailed new notes also carefully place each cue in its cinematic and musical context. --Jerry McCulley

5 out of 5 stars THE SOUNDTRACK OF NIGHTMARES.......2007-05-29

This CD should come with a DISCLAIMER!

Without exception, this is the most chilling, soul shattering, truly, deeply, profoundly disturbing musical composition ever written. What an ordeal to subject one's nerves to!

"Ave Satani" must have shocked the hell out of the audience when they performed it at the Academy Awards! And, as a previous reviewer very astutely noted, every single note of this score deserved the Academy Award.

And for the benefit of those of you unfamiliar with Latin:

Sanquis bibimus, Corpus edimus
Prode corpus Satani
Ave, Ave Versus Christus
Ave, Ave Satanti

We drink blood, We eat flesh
Bring forth the body of Satan
Hail Antichrist
Hail Satan

The other version runs:

Sanquis Vivimus, Corpus venimus
Prode Cantus Satani

Blood, we are alive, Body we are coming
Sing forth the incantation of Satan

[There are differing schools of thought as to what the actual Latin text is -one concert version actually exchanged "versus Christus" with "Jesu Christus"!]

Musically powerful and very effective, the score is one of the most original and polished ever written for a film -or the concert hall. It's essentially a chamber piece for small orchestra and mixed chorus, though recent recordings have used larger orchestras and even more varied vocal arrangements.

This newly remastered and restored version is a prized addition to any film music collection.

. . . this is the most frightening, superlative music ever written for a film.

Far, far better then the remakes soundtrack. This one still gives me chills up and down my spine! The new one, PU!

5 out of 5 stars The Omen; orchestral score.......2005-10-24

If you are looking for really dark satanic orchestra music, you found it. Lots of choral chanting by deep voices and women vocals too. I loved the score for "Bless the Child" and then I found this. Can not say enough good things about this. The song at the end has vocals and was not used in the movie. It sucks, but it is thankfully the last track so in no way should that stop you from buying this score

5 out of 5 stars Hauntingly Chilling, and Perfectly Composed.......2004-08-10

I am a huge fan of Jerry Goldsmith, but the undeniably most impactive score that I've ever heard under his name is this CD.
The 1976 success of Richard Donner's masterpeice is without a doubt 86% due to Jerry Goldsmith's requiem-stylized suites.

The tracks that stand out in this lister's brain are "Ave Satani," (once you hear in on the movie track, it will be instantly engraved in your mind.) "The Dog's Attack," enormously beacuse, when I hear it, my mood changes--as does with any music I listen to) and, course, who can forget the pressing motif in "the Altar" (I love it, and so will you.)

So, if your looking to listen to a killer score that will blow you out of your seat, slip this sweet little CD in and prepare yutrself for this beautifully remastered 25th Anniversary Edition of Jerry Goldsmith score to one of the most memmorable films of our time--THE OMEN

This film adaptation of the popular video game series attempts a technological breakthrough: computer-generated, photo-realistic renditions of human characters. But while critics and audiences gave mixed marks to game creator and film producer-director Hironobu Sakaguchi's ambitious technical efforts, it was ironically the film's most obviously human elements--its veteran actors' voice performances and, crucially, the masterful score by Elliot Goldenthal--that really brought it to life. Goldenthal's work is a sweeping orchestral masterpiece that covers vast musical territory, from the action-adventure of Korngold to the fantasy strains of Herrmann, florid Russian romanticism to touches of late-20th-century modernism. With the London Symphony in full voice and then some, Goldenthal's music is treated to a performance of rare dynamic range and dramatic power; the edgy, modern brass flourishes and thunderous percussion of "Toccata and Dreamscapes" alone may have listeners groping for their seatbelts. The album also features a pair of obligatory pop tracks, Lara Fabian's "The Dream Within" (which makes good use of Goldenthal's romantic themes) and L'Arc-en-Ciel's "Spirit Dreams Inside" (which doesn't). --Jerry McCulley

5 out of 5 stars Race to Old New York.......2007-04-01

-I'm not big on RPG's so I don't know much about the "Final Fantasy" games, but I do hear that the scores are largely excellent so I was a bit surprised when the game composer wasn't used and the great Elliot Goldenthal was brought in instead. Unlike the movie which is a beautiful disappointment, the score is fantastic and definitely one of the best from this very underrated composer that does not get the respect he deserves.

-The best piece of music on the album and one of the best musical cues I've heard in my life is "Race to Old New York" which starts off with this fast moving strings that plays this simple melody, then shortly after the brass comes in and picks up the melody which keeps going to the short cue comes to it's natural resolution. I don't seem to remember hearing that cue in the movie which was a shame because it's so wonderful.

-Other tracks that should make glad that you have ears are "The Phantom Plains", "Dead Rain", "Code Red", "Music for Dialogues", "Winged Serpent", "Zeus Cannon", and "Adagio and Transfiguration". I love how he blends the techno stuff with the orchestral elements in "Dead Rain" and "Winged Serpent" is just creepy as hell. "Zeus Cannon" is a majestic piece that sounds like the music that should accompany a Greek god. "Music for Dialogues" is a great piece that should be familiar territory for all Goldenthal fans.

-There is an isolated track on the DVD which is great, but Goldenthal seems to have the same problem that great composer Marco Beltrami has, which is to talk over the music. Most of the cues he does talk over are on the album so it's not that big of a problem, although I do wish he would have actually talked for the scenes when there was no music. 10 minutes would pass by and we won't hear a peep from him, but he is a brilliant composer so I guess we can forgive his lack of great DVD commentaries.

-Even if you find the movie to be a little disappointing, the score should keep you interested. It's fresh, it's great and gives birth to "Race to Old New York" which should be included in any filmmusic geek's top 50 of great musical cues of all time

    5 out of 5 stars Masterpiece........2006-11-28

I cannot express how finely crafted this score is. Goldenthal is one of my favorite composers (not just for film) and this is definitely one of his highlights. I believe that where this score really shines is Elliot's way of making really simple musical ideas sound extremely intense and grand. For example, Race to Old New York, one of my favorite cues, has an extremely powerful opening that is nothing but a string ensemble racing up and down a g minor chord. Yet it instantly exposes many raw emotions that other composers would need a few movements of a symphony to convey. Most of Goldenthal's trademarks can be found in this score. Horn tone clusters, near-atonal trills on brass, and HUGE, no, EPIC orchestrations that we fell in love with in Titus. The glass harmonica (and the way Elliot employs it) found its way into this film from the score for Interview with the Vampire. I could go on, but I won't. This is a remarkable CD by one of the best living composers (now that Ligeti is no longer with us).

    5 out of 5 stars Fantastic!.......2006-02-09

This has to be Goldenthal's best score to date! It's an orchestral masterpiece performed by none other than the London Symphony Orchestra.

Let me explain a few awesome tracks before giving the downside to this release.

The album opens with ambient noise and dark choir, much like Horner's Aliens. The second track, "Race to Old New York", doesn't appear on the film, or as this cue version does on the album. It's played by racing strings and low brass. Very good track and one of my favorites.

"The Kiss" proves to Hollywood and Goldenthal skeptics that he is able to pull of romantic, soothing themes. "The Kiss" is a romantic theme played by piano with some strings.

"Toccata and Dreamscapes" is the longest and most difficult track to perform. Goldenthal employs 40 French horns (!) to blast, grunt and shrill away every once in a while during the percussion and interrupted string action. One of the best tracks!

"Adagio and Transfiguration" closes the score album with a sad, sweeping reprise of the romantic theme and finishes on a solo trumpet.

Between all of these reviewed tracks are mixtures of sweeping cues, rolling strings, tense moments and dark choir. All this makes for a very diverse range of music on about 50 minutes of score for this release.

The album ends with two songs. Lara Fabian's rendition of the love theme in pop form is nice but is ruined by the last song on the album not worth mentioning. The rock song ruins the entire listening experience.

    The Complaints:
One I've already mentioned: the stupid rock song at the end of the CD; two, the music is not in chronological order, but I guess it makes for a better listening experience; and three, much good music is missing! "Dead Rain" is almost 8 minutes long on the film and we only get about 2 minutes on the album cut. The good thing about the special edition DVD is that we get the option of an isolated track and commentary by Elliot Goldenthal. Goldenthal is smart leaving the music cues that didn't appear on the album uncommented.

Get this soundtrack and the special edition DVD. They're worth every penny!

3 out of 5 stars "Where's my second disc?" (sarcasm).......2005-09-15

If you've seen Final Fantasy - The Spirits Within DVD, you've probably listened to the isolated score with commentary by Elliot Goldenthal, during which you will notice that he talks over certain bits of score but leaves other chunks of score alone, un-interrupted.

It more or less translates to this: The sections of score he talks over seem to all be here on the soundtrack and well covered. The several chunks of score he doesn't talk over some over eight minutes in length: completely axed and not used for this soundtrack.

"Dead Rain" is missing about seven minutes of great scoring which blend into it seemlessly in the film. Why do those responsible for cutting the score for a film's soundtrack axe some of the better parts (in my mind) in exchange for one or two tracks that don't seem to tell as much of a story? I've experienced this with so many scores I've bought. Exceptional pieces used in films getting axed.. and for what? The expense of a second disc? I'd gladly pay for a second disc or for a third folks. I really would, especially with scores like this.

Which is why I'm giving this soundtrack 3 stars. Not because the music sucks, it's great and I enjoyed every minute of it. Just remember to own the film on DVD as well as this soundtrack so you can get a little extra from Elliot.

4 out of 5 stars Goldenthal at his peak performance.......2005-07-22

Elliot Goldenthal wrote a grand, majestic score for the computer-animated science-fiction spectacle "Final Fantasy: The Spirits Within." The music bursts with roaring brass under climactic string arpeggios, carrying the listener high on a violent tidal wave, when suddenly the wave is broken and settles down with a soft female voice humming over an elusive and beautiful melody played on the piano. There's a sparse use of the synthesizer, apart from some choir effects in the background and echoing ambient sounds. The accent is very much on music played by a big orchestra.
This film doubtlessly features one of Goldenthal's best film scores. It's rich and inspired in every scene and every take. It keeps your attention, down to the last minute on the album. The music for the dream sequences is the most complex and grand, with a complex combination of percussion, string arpeggios and brass - often culminating like a thunderstorm, but always leaving a calm resuscitation behind. Buy this if you like modern, complex, grand music and lush sweeping "dreamscape" music.

    This one gets 4 stars.

There are only two instruments played on this album: the shakuhachi, an end-blown, bamboo flute, and the koto, a 13-stringed Japanese zither, a combination popular in Japan since the mid-17th century. And it's easy to understand why; the two were made for each other. Whether by variations in breath or touch, both instruments are graced by a nuanced flexibility of intonation--that wavery sound within individual notes that, to Western ears, may seem slightly out of tune, but which actually imbues each tone with a subtle character all its own. Both instruments are also capable of expressing a wide range of moods, from bright and piercing to lyrical and liquid. Shakuhachi master Riley Lee and koto virtuoso Satsuki Odamura are also perfectly matched, alternately gliding and tumbling their way through this collection of duets, playing off each other's embellishments and silences like seasoned jazz improvisers. The result is at once relaxing and stimulating, and at all times utterly transporting! Try also Riley Lee's other albums, such as the retrospective compilation "Postcards From Bundanon," and also "Quiet Heart / Spirit Wind" by Richard Warner and the Native American flute recordings of R. Carlos Nakai.

5 out of 5 stars Seven pieces for relax or introspection.......2004-06-20

This CD of shakuhachi and koto duets by Riley Lee and Satsuki Odamura paints sound-pictures or introspective dreams in an intriguing and rather beautiful way. Sometimes the phrases are simple and slow then suddenly there are bursts of energy as the instruments dance in ecstasy and passion.

There are some similaries here with the music of German musician Stephan Micus, so if you are a fan of this artist you should not be disappointed with Picture Dreams. Riley Lee, a dai shihan (grand master) of the shakuhachi, brings out all the magic of this instrument to our ears. And perfectly complementing Lee's performance, Odamura portrays a phenomenal mastery with the koto.

Overall, a fine effort of relaxing yet sometimes challenging music, portraying a masterful interplay between two very different intruments.
