Yanni can be likened to 1970s rock group Emerson, Lake and Palmer. There are several basic parallels, especially in this orchestra-enhanced concert reworking of his more propulsive, anthemic compositions. Yanni, who in concert sometimes strikes the rapturous two-keyboard "iron-cross" pose that served as one of Keith Emerson's trademarks, uses, as ELP did, classical and world-music influences to elevate pop-inclined compositions to more sophisticated levels. He then turbocharges the whole concoction with bold strokes of prog-rock bravura to give his finest pieces a dramatic, chest-swelling, larger-than-life impact. A key difference between the two acts, of course, is Yanni possesses a much stronger romantic streak, plus he refrains from attacking his keyboards with sharp objects. At his best, Yanni strikes incendiary sparks with the driving, celebratory quality of his music, and this production, culling some of the best audio moments from his much-televised 1993 concert performance in Athens, is a most appealing showcase. Yanni can sometimes strike the sonic hammer as forcefully as a Greek god ("Santorini," "Keys to Imagination") and, on this album at least, gives even overtly romantic pieces ("One Man's Dream," "Swept Away") a warmly masculine flair. Beautifully arranged and recorded; a pleasure to experience. --Terry Wood

Album Description

* Expanded package includes new photos and new liner notes. * The DVD features the most dramatic footage filmed of Yanni live in concert. * The DVD contains backstage interviews and exclusive behind-the-scenes footage of the making of the video.

On the night of September 25, 1993, beneath the golden glow of the Parthenon, a standing-room-only crowd assembled to witness a stunning spectacle of sight and sound. The majestic stone arches of the 2,000 year-old Herod Atticus Theatre became the setting for a performance of a lifetime. The passionate crowd warmly embraced its native son, internationally known composer and performer, Yanni, who was returning home after two decades in America.

5 out of 5 stars Yanni Live at the Acropolis.......2007-07-25

Passionate. That is the word I use for this album and DVD. My wife keeps this in our car cd player always. Santorini is my favorite track and I am listening to it as I write this. I am not a great fan of New Age music, being a hard rock fan, but this simply moves me. It is one of the few things I can listen to and feel really inspired. I love to listen to it and play orchestra conductor at the same time. This is a really moving piece of music. I highly recommend it to anyone who needs to be uplifted.

5 out of 5 stars Yaani CD Review - Live at the Accropolis.......2007-05-19

Great CD I have been enjoying listening for about a year.

5 out of 5 stars Best of the Best.......2007-03-21

I loved this concert,Yanni played with so much passion that you can closed your eyes and He take you out of this world and His music is very Beautiful nobody plays like Yanni.

5 out of 5 stars Terrific!.......2006-08-18

I am a male very senior citizen who, somehow, never learned a thing about music. I can't read music and the only instrument I can play is a harmonica, which I play by ear on rare occasions when I drag out my Hohner Chromatic. Thus I am perplexed by the technical critiques I have read in these pages about Yanni and his music.

I know only that I think this album is terrific and I like every selection. I think it helps to watch the video of this performance, then enjoy the CD. I give it a big thumbs up!

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful IntroTo Mehdi.......2006-04-14

I've always enjoyed Yanni and this album is no exception, but while reading some of the customer recommendations posted on this site I discovered a group by the name of Mehdi (pronounced meddie). After an online search I found their site (SoothingMusic - Com) and listened to the samples...
I was instantly blown away by the quality of this music and so I gave it a try and now that I have listened to these CDs several times I really must say that although I'm still a Yanni fan, I find Mehdi to be a wonderful addition to this CD. I have them both in my multi-disc CD player and love the way they compliment each other. I highly recommend that you give this artist a try or atleast just go listen to the samples, I have a feeling you'll be glad you did.

5 out of 5 stars I Wish I Was There!!.......2001-06-07

Absolutely a Mind boggling performance! Truly one of Kodo's best works in my mind. Oh the envy I felt for all those individuals that were at this concert, in the flesh, when it was happening. There in the Worlds most famous and ancient Amphitheater. The rhythms, the sounds, THE BASS! reverberating off those ancient walls. Echoing throughout Athens, carried for miles and miles until it envelopes all of the city......I DROOL! The Video "Kodo Live at the Acropolis" is a must own and a must see for those that have this album....Take it from me, order a couple of them...I'm already on my third VHS tape of this performance. I have watched it so much, and wore it out so bad....Must have on DVD!

5 out of 5 stars Kodo's best to date - nothing beats a live performance!.......1999-12-03

Coming from a rabid Kodo fanatic like myself, this review is biased, but rightfully so. This CD rules... From the first song, a re-worked mix of Leonard Eto's Zoku (which is both driving and joyous), to the always-impressive Odaiko solo (which captures a lot of the strength and intensity of the soloist, Eiichi Sato,) the CD is paced very well. The last song/encore is Akabanar, which starts out as Ryutaro Kaneko's piece (on Ibuki, their next CD) and becomes the familiar cornucopia of patterns, rhythms, and energy that makes a great Kodo encore. There is a video of this performance that I highly recommend to get the full effect of what this recording looked like, but the CD is crisp, full of the performer's and audience's energy, and worth buying if you're even slightly curious!

5 out of 5 stars music for the soul.......2006-12-23

I seldom listen to music and avoid TV like it's the plague. Plato viewed music as the movement of sound to reach the soul for the education of its virtue. For me, music is for renewal and healing - and in this, it needs to get the job done. `Kudo, Live at the Acropolis' gets it done and calls a person to rise to its focus, power and strength of heart.
