Flamenco revisionist Ottmar Liebert views Little Wing as a transitional project as he steers himself toward a three-for-one stylistic split. Future recordings, his liner notes tell us, will feature a new accuracy-in-labeling effort. Discs involving his Luna Negra band will feature his familiar flamenco/bossa nova kitchen-sink mix; "Euphoria" projects will be open to groove/world/ambient textures (think Opium); solo discs will be subdued affairs. Where might he file Little Wing? It easily lands on the quieter side of Liebert's wide-ranging spectrum, offering a pleasant though ultimately modest display of his skills as a player and composer. Four of the tracks, including the appealing title choice written by Jimi Hendrix, are covers, all nods to favorite tunes from his formative years. Liebert's acoustic spin on the Rolling Stones' "Paint It Black," a tune seemingly inappropriate for his style, is oddly interesting, with the use of a Turkish saz (a long-necked lute) pumping up the original's Middle Eastern accents. His jazzy take on Led Zeppelin's epic "Kashmir," with muted horns lightly handling the song's thunderous, cascading transitions, is ineffectively delicate. Casual fans will probably yearn for more of the blue-sky melodies that adorn "Daylight Melody," the radio-ready smoothness of "The Pearl" and "Angel," or the more intricate playing that eventually surfaces on "Like Water 4 the Desert." Nice, but not a knockout. --Terry Wood

These represent Spike's complete Standard Transcription sides, but these tunes are anything but standard; Mr. Jones brought his full bag of tricks for these non-commercial recordings (made in Hollywood during the early `40s). Add to that the fact that most of these have never been on CD or even LP, and any lover of Spike's mayhem-filled mixture of laughs and hot licks is going to flip over this set! 5 out of 5 stars Great set of wartime rarities.......2003-05-14

Spike Jones was the king of the novelty song performers, with hits like "Der Fuehrer's Face" and the parody version of "Sheik of Araby" becoming huge hits during World War II. This is a swell 3-CD set, gathering a full eighty-one of Jones' best tracks from his 1940s heyday, drawn from an extensive archive of radio broadcasts made for the Standard Transcription service. The tightness of his City Slickers band is amply demonstrated in these manic, kookily orchestrated performances. Toots, squonks, blatts and bleats whiz by at lightning speed, as one daffy song after another will delight devoted fans. Amazingly, Jones had the unusual, almost unique ability to perform a repertoire almost entirely made up of comedic material, and yet still be quite listenable and engaging. His jazz chops were hardly in question, and from time to time Jones would dash off a non-novelty ballad or two, just to give the rubes something to think about. Of course, just as often he would perform a song that *sounded* like a straight ballad, but would turn out to be another goof. (One great example of this is the sultry "Serenade To A Jerk," sung in slinky, burlesque tones by Myrtle Horwin.) This collection may seem a little overwhelming, but like his studio recordings, these radio performances have a certain brilliance and joie de vivre about them that will leave you enchanted. Definitely worth checking out!

This collection has remastered material from the large stack of Standard Transcription discs from the early 1940's. There are many songs not recorded on RCA, many on the theme of wartime ("48 Reasons Why"), and the quality is excellent. The packaging is threadbare but this is an essential CD package for true music lovers.

5 out of 5 stars Just As Profound As Jimi Hendrix!!!.......2005-09-13

WARNING! YOU MAY FIND THIS REVIEW TO HAVE SOME SPOILERS--I HIGHLY RECCOMEND YOU LISTEN TO THIS ALBUM!!!

Believe it or not, this album is truly a masterpiece! It was very maturely, and innovatively done, and will be appreciated by both lovers of classical and Jimi Hendrix (and, of course, good music!) It is by far one of the greatest albums I've ever listened to. The album is a mix of acoustic and electric string instruments (traditional, no adulterating guitar) and it has a very classical/asian sound overall. The whole album has a very full, robust, bassy tone, unlike the Led Zeppelin tribute (which sucks! Both of them--DON'T SUBJECT YOURSELF TO THEM!) which is all-acoustic and nothing but weak, squeaky, violin. This album has both cello and double bass (bowed, of course) I believe. Their are three highlights, and they are:

1.) Third Stone From the Sun
2.) Bold As Love
3.) Castles Made of Sand

Third Stone From the Sun is, by far, the most classical sounding, and, at the same time, mind-blowing, track (it will leave you in a stupor). The original track, which is largely trippy sound-effects, is rendered well. This is also, without question, the most electric track on the album, as, not long into the song, there emerges an unreal slur of distortion from the bowed electric instruments...sigh...and what a glorious ending...

Let's move on to my next favorite...Bold As Love...

This track immediately follows Third Stone (that track placement is just beautiful!) Throughout the song, there's one guy in the backround who, as my friend described it, is just sawing away on the violin. Eventually it bursts into a screeching electric solo. The rendition of the "fireworks" ending is not only note-for-note, but the sound is bent and distorted exactly the way it is in the original. It's the icing on top of the cake my friends, and it's a real treat!

Castle's Made of Sand is, as are the previous two, amazing. It has a very unique, asian-sound to it. Everything is adapted, including the psychedelic intro and outro (and it just sounds so mind-bending when done on the violin!) It sounds like they're using an esraj or dilruba (two exotic, unconventional indian instruments, which are like bowed sitars--both are very similar to each other) for the little solo in the middle and on the five/ten second intro/outro. It's definitely not a violin, and it sounds very, very asian. They also add a little twist to the end by hitting the notes really high (you'll hear what I'm talking about!)

Those are, in my opinion, the three most profound adaptations. That's not to say the others aren't! They extend Little Wing, making it almost six minutes long--adding some really warped string effects! There's a cry-baby violin at the end of up-from the skies. Stone Free is definitely one of the heaviest (sounds like someone's striking and bowing the the electric cello or double-bass every few seconds in the backround!), especially with the elctric violin solo!

I do, however, have one bone to pick. Manic Depression was completely changed! They took away the sound and made it sound like some tribal Native American dance--which isn't bad, but it's not upbeat like the original. I wish they'd done as good a job on this song as they did the others as it's one of my top picks for Hendrix songs. Don't be afraid of this album, it's not a disgrace to Jimi Hendrix. The opposite in fact. It's worth your money, and it deserves five big stars. It's surprisingly unpopular, which is a shame...Ironicaly I didn't even buy this album. A guy I knew burned it for me, but I like it so much that I'm gonna order it tonight! Heh. Well, happy listening!

3 out of 5 stars Not as "revelating" as it could have been.......2005-07-02

If you go through the series of String Quartet tributes to various artists you really wonder if the compiler was a psycho, there is no logic at all, one would expect either giving more relevance to intrinsic artistic value or simply choosing the most successful artists in a hope to sell well. On the contrary you have a random selection which leave you bemused. However, there are a few interesting ones and by this I mean when the sheer beauty of the songs should be matched, one thinks, by the adaptability to a String Quartet format. The Jimi Hendrix one was obviously one of the more interesting on paper, if only to prove once again that he wasn't merely the greatest rock guitar of all times but also a rather dignified musician who could have given the world other masterpieces had he not succumbed to excessive drug use. Especially interesting for those familiar with the relatively famous jazz "treatment" given to some of his songs by Gil Evans, an experiment in some cases very successful. The problem with both is that, of course, you can't help but miss Jimi's guitar and you are sometimes frustrated by thinking what could have been The String Quartet WITH Jimi Hendrix or, in the other case, what were like the endless jams that Jimi played with John McLaughlin or what could have been the much-talked collaboration with Miles Davis. But I'm beating about the bush, so to talk about this album I'll just say that the choice of tracks is inevitably good, even if I resent the absence of any tracks from Electric Ladyland, that the playing is good and at times inspired, that the songs that translate better are the ones originally less centered around Jimi's solo (the standout for me is Bold as love) and that the arrangements are a little bit sedate. All in all, not a must for Jimi's fans but a tasteful addition to a slim discography (that is if you take out the posthumous albums).

4 out of 5 stars Imagination with Hendrix runs wild!!! Well worth getting........2004-05-24

If your like me, your music tastes run the gamut. I can listen to opera, jazz, funk, rap and then rock without missing a beat. I just plain love music.

I especially love Jimi Hendrix. I saw this CD in a used bin and I thought I'd give it a whirl. Wow. This isnt some warmed over version of Jimi's music. It is a string quartet interpretation of Jimi's music. While an ardent fan will of course recognize the songs, my friends who have not been, ahem, musically educated think that this is a new classical album. When they are confronted with his Jiminess they are surprised and often pleasantly so.

Highlights for me include "Manic Depression", "Purple Haze" and "The Wind Cries Mary (I think the it is the standout track)."
Overall, if you like classical music, and Jimi Hendrix, I think you will like this collection. It is imaginative to say the least, and stands as a fine work of classical style art. Also, it confirms to me that Jimi Hendrix was a fine music composer who stands with the all time greats!

5 out of 5 stars Classical guitar with a blues twist.......2005-01-31

If you love the blues or rock and you love classical guitar, you cherish this gem. I only recently discoverd Ottmar Liebert with this album - I will be buying more of his work soon.

3 out of 5 stars I enjoyed it but he has done better.......2004-10-13

I picked this up in my flamenco stage two years ago and never got around to listening to it. Saw ottmar live for the 1st time several weeks ago and wanted to go back and listen to all his stuff I own.I have read the other reviews and they seems to be fair. My take, he puts a flamenco twist on some notable tunes which are interesting. Ultimately, I got tired of listening to it and moved on. Some of it just sounded so much of the same.

5 out of 5 stars An album to have!.......2003-09-01

This is one of the best Ottmar Liebert's works, in my opinion. After The Hours Between the Night and Day, Little Wing is the album to give to someone you would like to 'innitiate' in Ottmar Liebert and Luna Negra's musical experience. Friends who have never heard of him and listened to this album, loved it since the very first time.

Enjoy it!

4 out of 5 stars Good work on the covers..........2002-06-19

Yes, I was definitely more impressed by the four covers than on the eleven originals. Hendrix' "Little Wing" definitely is the best, certainly not a copy of Hendrix, but a very individual perspective.

And only the top players can take a familiar standard like "The Girl From Ipanema", and give it such a new dress as Liebert does. And he scarcely does less for Rollin' Stones' "Paint It Black", or Led Zeppelin's "Xanadu".

I don't want to ignore the other 11 cuts, that which represents the older work we're familiar with. However, these cuts don't seem to sparkle like his older work. Hopefully, this is just a minor lapse, because I have come to think of the artist as a reliable standby among new age artists.

This is still a good enough album for fans and for those not yet introduced to Liebert's music.

4 out of 5 stars Ottmar is just great!.......2002-02-21

Just when I thought he was in a Nuevo Flamenco rut he surprises me with some guitar playing that is very nice. I am learning how to play classical guitar, and just love to listen to someone like Ottmar who is so flawless. I especially like the rock covers, since I grew up listening to all of them too. But he throws in more "Ottmar type" stuff, to make this a well balanced album. A friend of mine tells me that sometimes he just shows up, playing in coffee shops in Santa Fe, where he lives, so if you're in the area you might see him.

Album Description

Julianne Baird writes: "Music and the social status it expressed was an integral part of Jane Austen's life. Her novels are replete with details of domestic musical activities. Accounts of public concerts and private balls as well as music programs with hired musicians fill her letters. A dedicated amateur herself, Austen ordinarily played at the pianoforte at least an hour a day before breakfast from the 8-book music collection now preserved in her home at Chawton. For nieces and nephews she practiced 'country dances,' a number of which appear in her collections. Austen painstakingly copied and bound music that especially interested her. Two books are in her own hand - one of piano pieces and the other (Book III), of vocal music, recorded here in its entirety. Some pieces contain her own suggestions for ornamentation. Prominent themes are naval affairs, country life, drinking songs, love, Turkish and Moorish motifs, female character pieces, and the French Revolution. The novels of Jane Austen reveal her as a keen observer of early 19th century English society. Now, through her Songbook, she herself springs to life: her special likes and dislikes, her boisterous sense of humor, her passions, the way she amused herself and what she was like relaxing with her family and friends." This is a very special album indeed.

This CD is nice but not one that I will listen to often.
The fact that you get to hear what music Jane Austen liked is quite amazing. When you think I'm listening to music that Jane Austen listened to over 200 years ago.
However I'm not a great fan of Opera Music and that is probably why this CD is not one that I will listen to often.
But if you like listening to Opera Music. You will like this CD.

5 out of 5 stars An Undiscovered Gen.......2005-04-19

I first saw Lew Soloff playing in 1978 with the legendary Gil Evans Orchestra. Soloff was joined in the trumpet section by Ernie Royal and Hannibal Marvin Peterson, neither of whom were trumpet slouches. Whilst Peterson's solos were like a slow burning fuse, building to an incendiary climaxes, Soloff played baroque-like excursions that danced like a high-kicking pony.

All that was nearly 30 years ago and whilst I have never forgotten Soloff and have seen his name crop up from time to time on album credits, I had never properly checked out his subsequent playing - though I have him on a splendid Gil Evans Live in Germany small band session from the same time.

A recommendation by British jazz trumpeter Steve Waterman sent me on a reconnaissance mission and turned up `Little Wing'. Now there are many CDs I get which are well played and recorded but somehow never quite hit the mark. In contrast, `Little Wing' is in a different league. Produced by the wonderful Steve Swallow it hums and crackles with contemporary vigour and abundant colour. This is heavyweight playing by a heavyweight band in which organs and synthesisers feature richly in the mix giving the band the power to compete with many a rock outfit. But don't get me wrong, whilst this album has much of the sass of rock - and nothing wrong with that - it has all the finesse and sparkle of the finest jazz.

Soloff's trumpet has wonderful warmth and richness in the mid register and he periodically leaps into the upper stratosphere with squeals and wails. Trombonist Ray Anderson also plays `up there' with abandon, so much so that sometimes it sounds like there are two trumpets. Stand out cuts are Bassist Mark Egan's `True Confessions' which has a gorgeous spaciousness similar in manner to Billy Cobham's `Heather'. Carla Bley's `Healing Power' turns from a shimmering opening into a sort of heavy metal jazz-funk-blues with vocoder from Pete Levin and a witty reference from Soloff to Miles Davis' `Jean Pierre'. And the title track - Jimi Hendrix's gorgeous `Little Wing' - opens with a fine bass solo from Mark Egan before a yearning rendition of the theme that takes its cue from the Gil Evans band. The sound quality is superb and the arrangements full of interest - due no doubt to producer Steve Swallow.

This CD is now 14 years old. But `Little Wing' still hits the mark and sounds fresh today. Without doubt an undiscovered gem.

4 out of 5 stars A Spike Jones chronology of his earliest records.......1999-01-19

This British import is actually a chronology of Spike's earliest 78s for Bluebird / RCA, from his first recording session in 1941 ("Red Wing") through 1945. Included are his hits ("Cocktails for Two," "Der Fuehrer's Face") and obscure B-sides ("The Covered Wagon Rolled Right Along," "Leave the Dishes In the Sink"). Spike's band was in its prime during this time, making for a good collection. Editing is good, especially joining the six parts of "The Nutcracker Suite." But note that the source material is scratchy 78s!

5 out of 5 stars Piccoloists take note.......2005-02-21

This is a rare and wonderful survey of modern music for piccolo, either alone or with various accompaniments. The music is all in the moderate range of modern style and should be accessible to the open-minded and attentive listener. The playing is technically flawless and stylistically tasteful. The recording quality is accommodating. Get this now if you are a flutist/piccoloist looking for well-composed modern sounds.
