I hadn't heard much about some Carribbean hottie named Rihanna until her big hit "SOS" started making waves in the US in 2006. Though I thought the single was somewhat catchy, but a bit too repetetive for my tastes, her nasally vocal delivery made me cringe and I couldn't get past that annoying quality in her singing. Being a person who doesn't really listen to radio these days, I just so happened to hear she had a huge hit single on her hands in 2007 called "Umbrella" so I decided to check it out to see just what made the darn song so catchy. The first time I heard it, I thought it was just a mediocre R&B dance track with little to offer (the infamous "ella ella ella ey ey" part was the least satifying part of it for me at first); but with subsequent listens it sounded better and better. Soon I started playing it repeatedly on my iPod and noticing I was grooving to the bea so I decided to get the album. Even though Good Girl is far from perfect, its good outweighs its low moments. Opener and lead international smash "Umbrella" is, undoubtedly, the highlight here--everything about it, from its beat to Rihanna's refreshingly bubbly delivery--make this track a sure feel good single, worthy of the praise it has received since its release onto the charts. "Please Don't Stop the Music" is another memorable tune, more disco and dance than R&B and Hip Hop. "Breakin' Dishes" is lyrically jarring as it references a woman discovering her man done did her wrong and how angry it has made her. Ballads have never been one of Rihanna's strong points ("Unfaithful" was a beautiful, almost tragic R&B ballad which showcased her oft-questionable singing skills quite brilliantly), but the two real ones presented on Good Girl are quite listenable: closing and title track "Good Girl" is decent and presents a good message to all those cheaters out there, but it is the smoky "Rehab", not to be confused with the brilliant Amy Winehouse song, that stands out here as the better song. "Lemme Get That" sets the mood for the Carribbean flavor Rihanna presented in her debut single, the annoyingly likable "Pon de Replay", and features a hilarious chorus lyric over the top of its addictive island Hip Hop beat: "Got a house but I need new furniture/But why spend mine when I can spend yers?" Rihanna may not have made a perfect listen, but Good Girl is certainly her best album to date and worthy of its success.

What will she release next year??? A country Album? Will she be Bad girl gone Good??? She has to strip and change her style(if she has one) to keep the public interested...

She is an image created to be so popular, but her album isnt selling as good as they are making us think, for an artist that has been on the charts for 9/wo week, her album hasn't even gone gold yet, but Maroon 5, Pink with U & ur hand, Justin Timberlake with Summer Love which didn't even go to #1 on Billboard have all gone gold??? I dunno I think it is like One person buying or downloading a song/album a million times so people will think everyone is buying it and then they start to buy it too...

An image created because talent & this girl don't go together... If not 4 Jay pushing her with those endorsement deals, she wud be forgotten like that Tierra Marie. But if i was her i wouldn't feel too bad, at least u never took ur clothes off to sell an album, keep flippin those burgers girl ;-)...

4 out of 5 stars Surprisingly good........2007-07-30

Rihanna's last two albums were hit and miss and sounded incredibly rushed. Her second, A Girl Like Me, managed to go platinum and produced two successful singles. Still, she did not go down in my book as a name to look out for. But with this album, Good Girl Gone Bad, she demands our attention. She has stepped out with a bold hairstyle, fashionable clothes, a somewhat "rebellious" attitude and a new confidence that we have yet to see from her before. This album, although not flawless, is a huge improvement from her previous efforts.

The good: First, Rihanna's voice has improved tremendously. The annoying nasal quality, present on her last two discs, has almost completely disappeared. Also, her delivery is much more emotionally charge and she finally sounds connected to the music. The production on this album is mostly top notch. Of course the first single, "Umbrella," is excellent, although is may be a little over-produced. "Push Up On Me" is an undeniably catchy piece of 80's-tinged pop. But "Breakin' Dishes" has to be the highlight track, for me at least. The fierce track opens with Rihanna fuming, "I don't know who you think I am!" It is entertaining to hear Rihanna angry and the tongue-in-cheek lyrics are quite humorous. The Timbaland-produced "Sell Me Candy" and "Lemme Get That" are amazingly catchy. "Say It" is a sweet track with great harmonies, "Question Existing" is touching, and the title track is a great way to end.

The bad: At times, it feels like Rihanna is trying too hard to be different and too much of a people pleaser (i.e. genre hopping, more pop-sounding, unconventional packaging). "Don't Stop the Music" was a terrible choice for a third single and I find the techno-pop track to be rather irritating. "Shut Up and Drive," is a nice rock influenced track, but the lyrics are a bit trashy. However, "Hate That I Love You" with Ne-Yo would have to be the hands down worst track on the album. The song is a lazy carbon copy of the featured artists' hit, "So Sick." It even uses the same shuffling drumbeat. (Also, I'm no huge fan of Ne-Yo and I think his voice is nasal.) I heard a rumor that this will be the fourth single. Um... not a good idea. Lastly, Rihanna tends to sound like Nivea at times. (Not a surprise since Nivea's husband contributed, in some way or another, to four of the album's tracks.)

Although this album is not without flaws like some people claim, the good far outweighs the bad and I'm quite impressed. Good Girl Gone Bad is a huge improvement from Rihanna's past works in many aspects. Now if only they could choose the right singles to release this album could be a big success.

Rihanna definitely made the effort to step up to a more mature sound on this album. The new sound is not half bad either. However, alot of the tracks sound rushed and like no effort was put into them. The beats are solid and there are some memorable lyrics as well. Overall, Id say this cd is worth lending an ear to. I'm a big fan of Sum 41 and out of all of their albums, this is by far the best in my opinion. We do see more diversity in the bands sound and lyrics. This album definitely has a lot of political opinions, which I'm not too into, but it doesn't overwhelm the album like some bands tend to do with their political views.

I like Sum 41, and have bought a few of their albums, including this one. I'm a big fan of pop punk, and these guys are good at it. This album has many catchy songs, shows a lot of diversity, and is well done.

The only reason I didn't give in 5 stars is that a few of the songs sound way to much like Bink 182 to me. This is especially true about the song 'Walking Disaster'. I am also a big Blink 182 fan. Now that they are gone, I am looking for bands that do similar music. So, Sum 41 is a great candidate. But this song, and a few others, are TOO IDENTICAL to Blink 182. Not only is the music of the same type, but the 'musical tricks' used are also exactly like Blink 182 (e.g., having line-ending vocal note drop instead of rise).

There is also some hints of Greenday (track 7), but this is done more like I'm suggesting. It 'hints' at Greenday, its not a 'copy' of Greenday and their style and methodology. I also find hints of an old band called '10 CC' at the end of track 10. Hints and homages are ok, I just have a problem with down right mimicry.

Having said this, 'Walking Disaster' is one of my favorite songs on the album. I just would have preferred if they had done it more in their OWN style (Sum 41 does have their own) instead of trying to BE Blink 182. But, like I said, the album is very good, I will continue to listen to Sum 41 and likely buy their albums, and I DID give it 4 out of 5, which is not shabby! :)

5 out of 5 stars They did well.......2007-08-01

Finally time to review this album after giving it a week of listening. Obviously, I was super stoked when this came out. Certainly one of my favorite bands, Sum 41 is on that short list of bands that got better as they got harder. Here, it isn't quite as hard as some of their other stuff, but still very enjoyable none the less. They still have the ripping fast choruses which I love. The ballad "Without you" is nothing short of amazing. I heard it was way too poppy at first but that itsn't entirely true. Sum 41 still rule the music world in my books

3 out of 5 stars Starts with a bang, ends with a whimper.......2007-07-31

This was a pretty interesting CD. Although I'm not an avid Sum 41 fan and have never purchased any of their other CD's, this one caught my interest and upon seeing it on a store shelf, I decided it was worth a buy. I wasn't wrong, it's a pretty decent CD, but not much more than that, unfortunately. While it gets off to an excellent start, by the CD's end, not only does it overstay its welcome and end up repeating itself, but it ends with some slow and tedious songs that (clearly) Sum 41 just isn't as good at. It also continues Sum 41's tendencies to borrow somewhat from other bands. Some people have pointed out similarities to Green Day's American Idiot. I, personally, don't see that comparrison at all, to me, this sounds a lot more like Blink 182's Take off Your Pants and Jacket CD. Not necessarily a problem, but obviously if you're buying this CD expecting anything particularly groundbreaking (either for this band or for rock in general,) don't bother.

The good news here is that when Sum 41 isn't attempting to do (painfully slow) love balads or slowing their tracks down with over-production or keyboards, they retain a great, fast, energetic punk rock sound that is becomming rarer and rarer in the record label industry. It's a sound that I hope this band never loses, I just hope they apply it to something a bit more original next time around.

1. Underclass Hero; 9/10. Pretty great song. Although it sounds (again) familiar to their past songs, it's a great song and easily the best on the CD. Basically completely sums up what's so great about this band. Fast, fun, energetic.

2. Waking Disaster; 7/10. Although it can easily be mistaken for a Green Day song at first, it luckily goes back to the Sum 41 formula quickly enough. Pretty good song, nice lyrics, and well-written. Overall, just a good song. Interesting.

3. Speak of the Devil; 8/10. Subject matter's a bit...lame, but a really good song with an awesome and melodic ending.

4. Dear Father; 7/10. A good song, but the lyrics seem a little too...obvious. Not the most subtle song.

5. Count Your Last Blessings; 6/10. Decent verses, but the keyboard sounds a bit off and out of place, and the refrain's also a little weak.

6. Ma Poubelle; A lame intermission sung in French. Weird. NA/10

7. March of the Dogs; 7/10. Okay, THIS is where I can see the comparrisons to Green Day's American Idiot. Still, a good song, but another case of good verses and a refrain that just doesn't really fit them.

8. The Jester; 6/10. Although it may not be the song's fault entirely, by this point in the CD, it's all starting to feel a bit familiar. But regardless, it sounds a little...weird. Not too pleasant to listen to. I know what they were going for, but I just thought it was kind of out of place.

9. With Me; 7/10. Good song with nice lyrics. Not much else to say. One of the few love songs on the CD that really works.

10. Pull the Curtain; 8/10. Great song. Again, feels a bit familiar by this point on the CD but it's still great. Piano outro's a bit unnecessary but otherwise a completely great song.

11. King of Contradiction; 8/10. Some great, fast, old school punk. Really great song. Sounds like it would have fit in on the soundtrack to the first Tony Hawk's Pro Skater. Awesome.

12. Best of Me; 2/10. Sum 41 try a love balad to disasterous results. Slow, boring, long, and very tedious to listen to. Stick with what you do best, guys.

13. Confusion and Frustration in Modern Times; 5/10. Feels like this song kind of could have been cut from the CD. Doesn't do anything particularly new or anything that we haven't already heard on the CD. Not a good or bad song, just average.

14. So Long Goodbye; 1/10. Again, another extremely slow song without any hook or anything worth listening to. This just isn't the band's thing.

15. Hidden Track; 1/10. More slow stuff. Not interested.

As you can see by these ratings, the CD gets off to a strong start and then ends pretty weakly, with slow songs all put at the end, and the slow songs just aren't any good. There are some good and great songs on this CD, but it's hurt by a couple really, truly horrible songs that just don't belong on there. But when this CD works, it really works. Sum 41 may not be the most original band, but it's great to see a rock band that's still trying to keep that fast, punk sound that few rock bands seem to be keeping. The songs on the CD that try to veer from that fall flat on their face so hopefully Sum 41 will focus more on what works on their next CD. But overall, I cautiously recommend this CD. It's a decent CD and a good listen, as long as you're prepared to skip through a couple of songs.

The 2nd album from the killers doesn't dissappoint at all, it has 7 to 8 songs that easily could be picked as single, track 6 "read my mind" being my favorite. Sam's town, When You were young,Bling, For Reasons Unknowned, Uncle Johnny, Bones, This River is Wild, all great songs, and above all this is not a carbon copy from hot fuss.

SAM'S TOWN immediately hits the listener with a sound that is significantly different from HOT FUSS. If it wasn't for the vocals, it would be fair to say you were listening to a totally different band. This type of change is risky in a new band; the fear being that fans will be alienated. Personally, I love when bands continue to evolve and search for new sounds and themes. It keeps things from becoming boring and it prevents that, "Didn't I hear this before?" feeling.

The question is it successful? The answer is, "Yes."

Hard driving anthems relating to genuine emotions triumph over artifice and The Killers pull it off very well here. Flowers' voice strains for creditability when pushed, but he pulls it off and while lacking the force of many other rockers, his vulnerability makes the songs that much better. While they don't all come off with the same power , the songs hold up in their new settings and the total package comes together. While still not a classic, this is a worthy effort from The Killers and I hope they continue to push themselves to make music worth listening to.

4 out of 5 stars As good as Hot Fuzz... just different.......2007-07-14

The title says the bulk of how I feel. I listen to the album in its entirety whenever I listen to it... I like every song though there are some that I like more than others (which is the same with Hot Fuzz).

The music is a bit bolder, and a bit more grandiose (musically and lyrically), but the synth is still there and after giving the album a listen or 3 you'll be singing along to each track. The lead singer's (Flowers) voice sounds a bit different to me on this album, but not for better or worse, just slightly different. The album definitely seems to be more mature (but I have no idea where the Springsteen analogy came from), the songs and the hooks aren't as poppy (at least not in every song) and it takes more than one listening for some songs to grow on you. (For instance I didn't like 'Sams Town' (track 1) the first couple times I heard it, but now its one of my favorites).

Overall, if you like popular music, or alternative music in general... its worth listening to, but I wouldn't expect a life altering experience.

The only thing that upset me was that there is no Killers c.d that has all my favorite songs by them on it. I do like most of the tracks on this one and on each c.d. that I bought they have great opening songs to start you out.

After the success of From Under the Cork Tree, Fall Out Boy earned the right to indulge their whims. Fortunately, their instincts tend to serve them well (not counting those infamous cell-phone photos). On their most adventurous album, Def Jam prez Jay-Z introduces "Thriller," while Kenneth "Babyface" Edmonds produces groove-heavy hit "This Ain't a Scene, It's an Arms Race" and "Thnks fr th Mmrs." A few new flourishes aside, however, like guitarist Joe Trohman's Metallica moves on "Thriller," the Chicago-bred band remains true to their punk-pop roots, even if vocalist Patrick Stump sounds like Mr. Sexyback on "This Ain't a Scene" and "I'm like a Lawyer with the Way I'm Always Trying to Get You Off (Me + You)." You can thank bass player/songwriter Pete Wentz for the unwieldy song titles. As he explains in "Fame < Infamy," "I am God's gift / Why would he bless me with such wit without a conscience." Whether spicing up their recipe with R&B swagger or playing it straight, FOB are at their best when they crank up the volume. Hence, the piano-based "Golden" is the weakest track on an otherwise solid outing. Hey, maybe they just wanted to see what a stadium looks like bathed in the glow of a thousand lighters. the most overhyped album of the century next to chumbawumba and the titanic soundtrack. no creativity here and the music just plain is horrible, nonsense takes on a new meaning with these posers. Almost as bad as system of a down but dummer than justin timberlake. do not waste your money and if you want talent look elsewhere. hard to believe people even buy this junk.

The follow-up to Fall Out Boy's breakout "From Under the Cork Tree" finds them infused with a new-found confidence and an arena rock cockiness. Fortunately for them, they manage to aim for the Stadium Nose-Bleed seats and succeed. From the opening braggadocio of their label Prez Jay-Z to the funky beats that undercoat "I'm Like A Lawyer..." (produced by none other than Babyface Edmonds) to quoting Leonard Cohen in "Hum Hallelujah," Pete Wentz shows he and his mates have no intention of playing it passive.

They also come up with hooks a-plenty. The slapping drum and bass that kicks "The Take Over The Breaks Over" is irresistible. The hit "This Ain't A Scene It's An Arms Race" will have you football cheering and stamping your feet in no time flat. There are so many memorable moments on this CD that pointing them out is beyond the point...they just craft themselves elegantly into each song. The Choir in "You're Breaking But You're No Wave" is probably my personal favorite.

Be that as it may, there are times when the band teeters close to smart-aleky. Especially the unwieldy song titles and frequent self-referencing. There is a touch of the clever-clever here that makes me wonder if the band can transcend "being poster boys for the scene" (as they sing in "Thriller") in the way My Chemical Romance did on "The Black Parade." But for the 14 catchy rocking tunes on "Infinity On High," Fall Out Boy show that they are hungry for more.

Besides, any band that can work both The Simpsons and Vincent VanGogh into their overall view is OK by me.

Just buy the singles that you like on the radio. This album is crap. I dont know why they put JayZ in there and most of the critical reviews on amazon pretty much summed it up. I really believe some people are frocing themselves to like this album.

What can I say? I love this album to death! I've been a FOB fan since early 2005. Now that's not reeeeally a long time, since that's when they kinda started to get noticed. I wish I was there from the start, but personally, if you didn't live in the Greater Chicago area, I think maybe that would have been a bit hard. (Hey. I might be TOTALLY wrong).
Anyway. Great hooks, Great melodies, Great lyrics (which don't really have a "plot" or "story" to 'em, but hey who cares!). One million out of ten. And will ALWAYS be in my top 3 albums ever.

What does a wildly successful purveyor of `80s big hair power ballads do in an ensuing decade dominated by fervent shoe-gazing and other attendant alt.cliches? If you're Jon Bon Jovi, you scale back your band's ambitions, retool yourself as surprisingly accomplished indie film and TV actor, and (mostly) wait for the pop music tides to turn in your favor again. But JBJ and guitarist/collaborator Richie Sambora didn't let their band's lukewarm `90s fortunes dampen their knack for hook-savvy songcraft, as this muscular anthem-fest argues at virtually every turn. BJ's songs here may be as infectious as ever, yet they're seldom mere confections, often infused with alternating doses of bracing cynicism (the title track's sarcastic riposte to the '04 election) and reflective, often bittersweet takes on histories both personal and otherwise. If it sometimes stoops to formula--the droning, metallic ethos of the obligatory big ballad "I Am" can't overcome some equally perfunctory lyrics-it's also an album with its share of warm surprises, be they unexpected nods to Dylan ("Last Man Standing," the acoustic idealism of "Bells of Freedom"), the hard-edged "I Want to Live" or a winning duet with Sugarland's Jennifer Nettles, "Who Says You Can't Go Home." Songs I like are Have a nice day, Bells of Freedom and Complicated. Beyond those three, however this CD really is not that good. There is a lot of pent up aggression with the words but the songs are more of some personal kind of vendetta BJ has against certain social and political issues than a collective set of songs created by a team of people. Sambora, well you just may as well have put him on a bus to go down to California and play for David Lee Roth, or anyone who appreciates his talents because the minimal jamming heard here is really a waste of his precious time. Different approach I can handle, but it could have been so much better.

Hints of a country band realized.....That said Bon Jovi brings you.....Lost Highway. There have always been overtures towards country music from JBJ from Wanted: Dead or Alive, to The Blaze of Glory soundtrack. You knew, however, that they would be followed up with a Bad Medicine or 99 In The Shade. It is becoming apparent, as they age, that they will rock less and croon more..... Sad but true. JBJ's Slippery When Wet voice abandoned him years ago. He's learned to pick his spots, like an aging fastball pitcher. But....he is from Jersey so...I like him....I'll just listen to SWW and NJ more! Keppin the Faith!

As far as greatest hits by the band, this I believe is the first one of studio cuts anyway. I saw this one in the Spring in the top Ten at Amazon, and was wondering why all the sudden interest in Bon Jovi, of course they did just come out with a new CD, and the new stuff is pretty good, me myself recently got the Remasters of their first 3 or 4 Cd's, and I admit that "Keep The Faith" was the last one I bought...But I did get the big box set of rarities 100 Million fans can't be wrong, so they are indeed my major rock guilty pleasure.

Is there no "Essential" Bon Jovi yet?, didn't see one...I was hoping for a 2 CD set of their hits along with a few deeper album cuts by now not that I need that, just that it would seem it's time for that since they've been around for 20 plus years now. Hopefully it isn't far off, this band deserves a better career collection than this one, I can't imagine the casual fan wanting this lacking set, even the order is strange. Of course the hardcore Bon Jovi fan likes about every one of their songs, maybe only 4 or 5 from the first album, but even I like most of the songs on 7800 degrees, and an essential would have to have Tokyo Road and Silent Night on it or I would not buy it. As far as Slippery, New Jersey...every song on those should be essential, maybe one or two left off...and that they are not on the greatest hits as this is known, is a major flaw. I'm thinking the ultimate Bon Jovi greatest hits set would have to have at least 4 songs each from the first two CD's, and then maybe 5 or 6 from Slippery, New Jersey, and Keep The Faith? That would fill out 2 Cd's I think and make a nice collection; better than this one for sure.

Hopefully fans new and old will get a better restrospective soon, this one is a nice start I guess, but I would highly recommend checking out their remastered catalog for more hits. They don't have many duds at all at least on their first 4 or 5 Cd's. The late 90's one's I don't know, perhaps an essential collection would contain some newer songs...but classic Bon Jovi is good enough for now.

For people who only know Bon Jovi from their "Have A Nice Day" and beyond years, "Cross Road" is a very good collection of tunes for them to check out. It gives the listener a solid set of their most popular tunes from their hair band heyday before they got all earthy/Mellencampy. This album is by no means a complete gathering of their greatest tunes. It leaves out at least two songs ("Living In Sin" and "Born To Be My Baby") and instead fills those holes with the dismal "Prayer '94," the forgettable "Always" and the harbinger of things to come, "Someday I'll Be Saturday Night." "Someday" is actually a very good modern roots rocker, but people don't buy greatest hits albums for the new songs. People buy this album for songs like the original "Livin' on a Prayer," "Wanted Dead Or Alive," "Bad Medicine," and "I'll Be There For You."

Lesser known tunes from their earliest offerings(particularly "Runaway") signal the beginnings of a great band to come. Later songs such as "Keep The Faith" and "Bed Of Roses" reveal a band in rock decline and quickly headed for the adult contemporary sound. In short, "Crossroad" gives the listener a pretty good take on how a band from Jersey made it big, leveled off, then headed for the sweet and steady success of light rock. Just to shake things up a bit, "Blaze Of Glory" from Jon Bon Jovi's solo "Young Guns II" project is included. Sadly, we do not get a sample from any of Richie Sambora's solo works. He really is a much better guitarist than he's given credit for, and it would have been nice for one of his tunes to be included in this collection.

I grew up during Bon Jovi's prime, and am proud to say that I own original cassette copies of "Slippery When Wet" and "New Jersey." Although they weren't my favorite hair/glam/hard rock band (that was Def Leppard), they were still one of the best around at the time. Bon Jovi is no longer the band they once were, but for people who want to know where they came from, this is the album to pick up.

Yes, I do play it an awful lot and I'm not afraid to say so. This has so many great tracks on it; I really can't think of one I don't like, though I do have my favorites. Pop it in and it will help you get your work done in the home or yard. I really need to order their next album as well, Keep it up, Brandon and boys.

I have to admit, when I first heard "Mr. Brightside" back in 2004 I wrote these guys off as new wave copycats devoid of their own creative force. Boy was I EVER wrong!!! Fast forward 3 years later. After hearing "Read My Mind" from their "Sam's Town" album and instantly falling in love with it, I went back, gave this album a fair listen from top to bottom and I was blown away. Sure, the influence of 80's new wave with it's blasting bass lines and sonic-filled synthesizers are there, but they've pulled off in such a way that makes this offering fresh without giving the listener a nostalgia hangover. The playing by the band is tight, groovy, and as catchy as an STD in Africa (okay, bad analogy but you get my drift). Brandon Flowers' voice is awesome in the weirdest way. It's pitchy, squeamish and loud at times, but somehow you fall in love with it. Overall, I believe that this album should be considered a modern day classic. Rock on Killers!

I will admit that i do like Sams Town better.But none the less this album is still absolutey fabolous.The Killers and Coldplay are the only 2 bands albums where i can listen to there albums without skipping songs.This band is just so fantasic in so many differnt ways and for all you people who think that they are just another average band i seriously think that is so false.Other than Franz Ferindad i really dont know any other band like The Killers.And even Franz doesn't really stand up to The Killers.Also these guys are mind blowing live.I've recentyl attended there concert in Atlanta and it was the best show i've been to.I will be a killers fan for a long long time and there cd's will never leave my car cd player lol

From the scantily clad car-wash girls on the inner sleeve to the "You lost more than that in my back seat / Yeah!" lyrics, the album is blissfully untouched by irony and subtlety, which actually adds to its charm. With guitarist Richie Sambora and songwriter Desmond Child, Jon Bon Jovi has produced a slew of consistently memorable tunes, and this album contains its fair share of them. Everyone has that one album that they can credit with changing the way they listened to music. Some are fortunate enough to have experienced this great awakening to Are You Experienced or The Doors. For others it was London Calling, Ramones, or even Black Sabbath. For me it was Slippery When Wet. That's right, Bon Jovi changed my life. I realize on some level that I should probably be embarrassed about that little fact, but the truth is I love this album every bit as much now as I did two decades ago.

I still remember like it was yesterday. I was 11 at the time, and didn't really care about music one way or another. I did however think that Transformers were quite awesome, but I digress. I was flipping channels and came across the video for Livin' on a Prayer. I wish I could accurately describe the impact that silly, you and me against the world love song had on me. It was like all of the tumblers of a combination lock sliding into place inside my head. I knew I had to hear more, but that wasn't going to be easy. My mama didn't dance and my daddy didn't rock & roll, so to speak, so I had to track down the cassette through a friend. If Livin' on a Prayer grabbed my interest, You Give Love a Bad Name and Wanted Dead or Alive sealed the deal. After that I moved on to Poison, Europe, Stryper, and dozens of other hairspray laden bands that I naively thought of as "metal", but Bon Jovi was the first.

I sometimes wonder if I would have reacted the same way to any other album. Somehow I doubt it. Bon Jovi was at the top of their game with this album. You could argue that their follow-up album New Jersey is the band's best, but I'll put the songs on Slippery When Wet up against that Bad Medicine stuff any day! With Slippery When Wet, Bon Jovi built on the sound they developed with their two previous efforts and added hitmakers like Desmond Child to take the songwriting to a whole new level. I can hear you snickering at the thought of You Give Love a Bad Name and Never Say Goodbye as examples of quality songwriting, but it's hard to argue with the results. I believe that the lessons Jon Bon Jovi and Richie Sambora learned while recording this album are a big reason why they are still big stars to this day, when so many of their peers have been relegated to the bar & grill circuit.

Slippery When Wet was the perfect fusion of Bruce Springsteen's American rock & roll, Van Halen's party rock image, and an impeccable pop sensibility. It didn't hurt that Jon and the boys were easy on the eyes and could represent the new face of "metal" in a totally unthreatening way. I can't help but wonder how many other kids made their way to Iron Maiden and Metallica by first discovering a band like Bon Jovi.

Say what you will about this era or this style of music. I firmly believe that Slippery When Wet is a great example of rock & roll in the 80's, and it will always have a special place in my heart.

NOTE: Slippery When Wet was reissued in 1998 with digitally remastered sound. Serious collectors may also want to check out the import version with the original cover art that the band nixed, not because of the racy image, but because of the pink border. Go figure.

I grew up in the 80's and this was one of my favorite bands. I recently purchased the remastered CD from Amazon. The CD arrived quickly and in good shape. I was very pleased with the service and the prompt delivery. The album is every bit as good as I remember from my youth. Now my son is hooked on Bon Jovi as well!

I loved this album. It came out when I was about 12. I guess that's the only time I could enjoy the album.
Bon Jovi seems incapable of writing lyrics that amount to anything other than a string of cliches.
This album can really only be appreciated by those of us who were young when it was popular.

Lucinda Williams makes this whole music thing seem so simple: Write in plain language about the people and places that crowd your memory; add subtle flavors of a mandolin here, a Dobro there, perhaps an accordion or slide guitar; above all, sing as honestly and naturally as you can. Of course, it took her six years to achieve this simplicity, an amazing achievement considering the number of knobs that were turned. Her exquisite voice moans and groans and slips and slides--she delivers a polished tone in a coarse manner. Car Wheels on a Gravel Road is a good folk-rock album. It's good simple sings with good lyrics that aren't covered up by a bunch of production. It probably won't work so well for the hyperactive or impatient. Just sit back and listen to and think aoubt the songs. You'll like 'em.

If you're looking for a nice soothing CD to "set the mood"...then this CD album by Lucinda Williams should do the job quite nicely. There are a couple of songs that are just a bit "too country" for me...but the rest of the CD more than makes up for this minor deficiency.

I am BLOWN AWAY by this album!

Only once or twice if you're lucky in a lifetime if you come across an artist with this level of creativity and talent.

"Too Cool to be Forgotten" - Hey Hey....this song will be remade by future generations of Rockers.

"On the way to Jackson" - A fantastic song that sounds like it's been around since pioneer days and yet it had just been CREATED by Lucinda!

"Lake Charles" - Oh my! What a DELICIOUS SONG!

I can't say ENOUGH how FANTASTIC this whole album is and I don't like writing long-winded reviews...but to give it justice - I would have to create a review as big as anyone's viewing area. Every song on this album is INCREDIBLE!

Every song...something that future generations will re-do. Way ahead of it's time in creativity and originality.

P.S. I've read a lot of people comparing Lucinda Williams with Patty Griffin. Hands down. No contest. Lucinda RULES though I also love Patty Griffin incredibly well.

This has become one of my desert island CDs - right along with Joni Mitchell's "Hejira", Bob Dylan's "Desire", Stevie Wonder's "(well, ALL of his 1970's music), Emmylou Harris' "Wrecking Ball", Neil Young's Crazy Horse stuff... The song that really gets me is "2 Kool 2 Be 4-Gotten" - for that incredibly liquid guitar sound. It's not my favorite song on the CD - that is "Lake Charles", but hey - the next time I listen I'll probably have another favorite song. Every single selection on this CD is a masterpiece of the genre - there is not a single throwaway track in sight. This is roots soul music - anyone who has ever lived on a farm, hitchhiked across the countryside, found themselves alone and come to terms with their own sense of being, been hammered by the storms of life and love - would find a lot to like about this music. Her voice is not polished, it is not a five octave mindblower, it is not smooth or pitch-perfect. What Lucinda William's voice is though is... real, powerful, compelling and very sexy. This vocalist writes songs perfectly fitted to her instrument, and then creates a sound that washes over me in a hundred layers all at once. That's damn fine music in my book...

While many of their peers were abandoning '70s metal and arena rock to hop the punk/new wave bandwagon, Def Leppard smartly stripped the earlier era's music of its excesses, bolstered it with energetic, pop-savvy hooks and quickly found itself the vanguard of the UK's new metal revival and one of the '80s most spectacularly successful rock acts. The concept was correct: Use of a full two CD's to represent all the great songs the band has produced. However, the selection was incorrect. There is too much emphasis on obscure tracks like "Paper Sun"? and "Waterloo...". But perhaps the most glaring faux pas, is that the albums "High and Dry" and "Pyromania" are under represented. Where is "Action...Not Words" and "Stagefright" or "You've got me Runnin'" and "Lady Strange". Also, "Die Hard the Hunter" is likely the ONLY weak song from "Pyro" and they choose it? Nonsense... Once they release Pyro and High n' Dry in a remaster, those are the two to get after Hysteria.

This 2-disc collection rules. It's got all the hits and more. The songs are put in a good order on both discs. Great summary of Def Leppard's music. The fan gets well over 2 hours of Def Leppard for his/her money. Great value! Get it.

This is far better retrospective than the old one disc set, The Valut. That being said, I think the casual listener may find this collection to be too much Def Leppard. The first disc is fairly solid disc filled with radio hits and popular album favorites, with only maybe one or two questionable tracks. The second disc is highly indulgent with newer material that only a hardcore fan who continued to follow the band through less popular albums like Slang, X, etc. will know. If you haven't bought a Leppard album in the past decade, you won't know a lot of this disc. Overall, a very thorough set, but the passive fan may opt for the one disc import only version, Best of Def Leppard. Its not complete, but its got more than The Vault without the filler of ROCK OF AGES.

I was NOT disappointed with my purchase here. There's a great selection of songs on here, showcasing the band's changing image over time. If there are particular songs that you like that aren't in this collection, I'd suggest you download them, or get them elsewhere, but definitely get this CD for the absolute best of Def Leppard. It contains great liner notes on each song, with input from each of the band members, something I particularly enjoyed. Getting these liner notes helped me understand a lot more about where the band was coming from on each song and what it truly meant to them to be writing and recording it. With this input on their take on lyrics and such, I daresay I understood the songs themselves better. It also includes pictures of the band over time, including Steve Clark (R.I.P.). Overall: Perfect for fans and those simply looking to get the best of this phenomenal band.
