Product Description
RemixingÂ… the art of reworking, of breaking it down and building it again, yet with a different mind, with different ideas and different sounds. For six months between 2003 and 2004, MCD WORLD MUSIC and ELECTRONICSECENE.com have promoted the Atman remix contest. At the contest website, participants were able to download the individual audio channels from Atmans Eternal Dance CD tracks. With this in hand, artists from around the world created their remixes and sent them back to the same website.Tracks presented on this double CD set stood out for their quality and originality. On CD1, India Club, indian instruments and voices mixes with the more danceable genres of electronic music like Deep House and Drum & Bass. On CD 2, India Lounge, its time for Ambient and Lounge to incorporate the Indian flavors to its forms and textures. On both, experimental and conventional coexist in harmony creating a flow of continuous interest.

Born in London, raised in New York City, and of Indian descent, Karsh Kale's life has always been a mix of cultures, so it should come as no surprise that his music reflects that. His debut, Realize, quickly proved that he could mix it up gracefully and organically with the best of them. Here, on his third proper studio album (there've also been countless remixes, collections and collective projects), Kale's self-proclaimed brand of "rocktronic-organica" brings together such guests as Ekova's Dierdre, Midival Punditz, Crystal Method, and rapper MC Napolean. Whereas electronica and hip-hop are commonly integrated into Indian music (or vice versa), Kale also offers up intriguing touches of indie rock on "Dancing At Sunset" and the ballad "City Lights"--the latter isn't as compelling as the former, but Kale still gets points for originality. Other highlights include the dreamy "Drive" and the hard-driving electronica of "Hole In The Sky." Truly music with a modern multi-culti reach, nothing on Broken English is lost in translation. --Tad Hendrickson

Album Description

On Broken English, Karsh balances his Indian heritage with rock and roll, hip-hop and atmospheric pop for this most diverse release to date. Kale works with a talented cast of collaborators including MC Napolean Solo, vocalists Trixie Reiss (the Crystal Method), Sophie Michalitsianos (Sparklehorse), Diedre (Ekova), Vishal Vaid and award winning Bollywood film composer Salim Merchant

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Cornucopia of sounds!.......2007-02-09

This album is great!!! It is definitely different than his previous albums so if you are looking for the same style of KK's music, you are not going to get it. KK is entering new bounds with his unique styles here and makes this album is a musical journey.

1 out of 5 stars missed the boat.......2007-01-05

i sort of liked his other cd's, but this one is just a big mess. with no real direction or theme, most of this sounds like an attempt at (bad) pop music with some exotic sitars and table drums thrown on top. not to mention the onslaught of annoying vocal gymnastics throughout. none of the music here is engaging in the least (which is why there are so many cheap used copies available here). very disappointing

5 out of 5 stars Incredible.......2006-12-21

This is one of my favorite albums of 2006. I don't know why people are complaining about the guest artists. They add flair to the album. Karsh Kale is great as an instrumental artist, but let's be honest, many of the best tracks feature vocalists.

The first track is rap and is the only track I skip (unless I'm in the mood for rap), but to me the rest of the CD incredible. Especially tracks 2, 4, 5, 7, 8 and 10. Correct me if I am wrong, but I believe that the primary single in India was track 3 "Beautiful."

3 out of 5 stars I'm with the "warning" group..........2006-11-10

I have the first 2 K.K. cd's (I hate remix cd's) and this one is different. It's fine but it has the whole guest artist thing I find tiring. Everyone has to do a guest artist cd and a Christmas cd eventually it seems. The first 2 cd's are more instrumentally his style and this cd is a mainstream pop cd with guest artists that has his style added. You get different singers on different songs. You'll like it if that's your thing but I prefer the instrumental thing more. Just my 2 cents. Can't wait for his Xmas cd!

3 out of 5 stars It depends on what you seek............2006-08-07

I own all three of KK's solo CDs, and i recommend his work and ideas highly. If you are new to KK's work, i recommend him greatly as an artist. Whether or not you will like this CD depends on what you are looking for in a disc.

This CD veers heavily both in terms of production and in style towards being "club-heavy". If you like music to blast to 10 in your car or are trying to pump up a party, i think you'll largely enjoy this disc.

However, if you like the earlier discs because of their ability to cross genres and create/fuse ideas that meld and create exotic soundscapes and create transcendent music, i think that if you are new to KK's work, i'd recommend Liberation first and Realize second, before i'd recommend this.

For me, many of the songs on this disc lack the subtlety and nuance that you'll find particularly present on Liberation. There's not alot of depth to the vocal ideas here compared to the other discs. Liberation is very "lush" and it grew alot on me over time. Realize does a great job of straddling the line between more "pop" sounds and some great classical Indian influences and has some truly brilliant moments on it. I don't sense many truly memorable moments on this disc, it doesn't "grab me" like his earlier work has. That MAY be because the music is more oriented towards the club-goer and i am more likely to put on a KK disc while having a glass of wine with friends.

I take away one star because i find the production on this CD renders the music a bit flat. I take away a second star, because KK is an amazing talent, a talent worthy of more lofty goals (imho) than getting club-goers out there onto the dance floor. KK has the ability to get lots of amazing musicians to work together, and i was simply hoping for more experimentation than you'll find on this disc. Your mileage may vary...

This CD will remain in my collection, but its likely that if i'm going to put one of his discs on, it'll most likely be Liberation or Realize.

cheers!

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Settles my class down.......2007-04-06

I bought this disk to try and bring some calm energy to an otherwise hostile and negatively charged environment. I find that in playing it lowly in the background, my fifth graders are more focused and relaxed, less likely to get aggressive with one another. I imagine if you were simply sitting and listening to it, it would be boring, but it makes for soothing background noise for myself and my students.

2 out of 5 stars Too sweet, Too "Produced".......2007-02-18

It should be said first of all that this is a quality recording. Clearly, the producers put a lot of work into it. This is the only reason I give it more than one star.

That said, it is the antithesis of Buddhist chant. The music is overproduced, too lush and much too saccharine. It is the audio equivalent of a big hunk of birthday cake.

Unless that's what you were hoping for, I would advise potential buyers to look elsewhere. Very disappointing.

5 out of 5 stars Great for Tai Chi and Qi Gong.......2004-11-26

Songs may be long if you seat and listen to them, however if you use this CD during some activities or training you may find it excellent.

5 out of 5 stars Beautiful - A Spiritual Lullaby.......2004-07-04

One of my favorite CD's. I enjoy playing this very softly while I sleep. I'd recommend it highly for anyone interesed in that, adding soft background music to a shopping place, or even playing it to relax an infant. In fact, I think it would be wonderful for that.

I never have used it for meditation as I do that in silence. I can see easily how this CD could be used for that with great success, but if like some of the others you are looking specifically for a meditation CD I'd suggest shopping around. I believe, however, that anyone who meditates would be delighted to have this music in their collection. In fact, in addition to calling it a spiritual lullaby perhaps one could call it a meditation luxury.

5 out of 5 stars Nuyorican Soul is a Soulful Masterpiece.......2006-08-21

For anyone who ever wondered what the great cultural center of our universe, New York is up to musically besides Broadway, Off Broadway and television network shows to include quiz show themes, here is your answer; "Nuyorican Soul." This gem of a CD confirms that the cultural patchwork quilt that is New York is alive and well with wonderful sounds and rythyms in this package. Musicianship and performance extrordinaire! Perhaps you are bored with the same old thing musically. If so, then this is just what the Dr. ordered. I highly reccomend "Nuyorican Soul." Richard Law

5 out of 5 stars Love lost and found.......2005-01-28

I previously owned Nuyrocian Soul several years ago. It mysteriously vanished from my home. I have searched high and low in an attempt to find it again. I have, and I've purchased it for the second time. If I lost it again, I would make a third purchase. If you love funk, jazz and latin, this is the cd for you. I highly recommend it.

5 out of 5 stars Mixing Genres and Making it Work!.......2004-02-04

This album was quite a pleasant suprise for me. I knew very little, if nothing, about this group. I only heard "Runaway" on the radio, but I was so impressed by that song that I decided to get the album. I don't know about all you folks out there, but for me, whenever I buy an album for one good song, the rest of the album is never up to the same level as that ONE song. This album will prove the contrary. Virtually every song on the album is as good as the other. What I also love about this album is that it crosses so many different genres of music, while making it actually sound in harmony with one another! Far too often artists try to do this mixing and matching of different genres but the end results sounds so abstract and with no streamline flow to it, however Nuyorican Soul is a wonderful mix of Latin-House-R&B-Smooth Jazz-Ambient-Soul all in one! This album also has some great contributions by some classic artists, like George Benson and Roy Ayers. Be sure to check it out!!!

5 out of 5 stars An excellent buy!.......2004-01-06

I actually had NEVER previously heard of Nuyorican Soul when I bought this CD. I was shopping at the mall and had found a used CD my friend had been looking for and decided to skim the 'used CD rack' to see if there was anything I wanted (the price was right...)

When I saw Nuyorican Soul, it looked very different and interesting to me. So I picked it up not knowing what to expect. What I got was something new, innovative, and catchy!

This is a wonderfully eclectic mix of Jazz, Salsa, and other smooth Sinatra-esque sounds. It is unlike anything I have ever heard and I love it to pieces.

If you want something that's new and fresh to spicen up your CD player, don't hesitate! BUY THIS ALBUM!

5 out of 5 stars House, Salsa, Electronica all Converge into a stunning album.......2003-10-30

Although the `Nuyorican Soul' tag is misleading as this is a production by dance duo "Masters At Work" and although there is certainly a very danceable flow to the music, its more so in a Latin/Salsa party atmosphere kind of way, and a million miles away from a traditional dancefloor album. Not that any of this matters as the `Jocelyn Brown' sung "I am The Black Gold of the Sun" has long since been one of the most fantastical summertime House/Jazz records ever made. In fact Jazz/Salsa artists feature prominently with tracks here "Roy Ayers" (Roy's Scat)..."George Benson" (You Can Do It (Baby)....and "Eddie Palmieri" (Taita Cañeme) provided big name entertainment, as well as Masters at Work (which consists of: Kenny Dope Gonzales and Little Louie Vega), on several superb productions, and also one of the most substantial albums made by the duo, and provides an album that works on within an upbeat & Downtempo atmosphere.

Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars While It's Not Horrible, It's a Weak Buddha Bar Entry.......2007-04-10

First, it is disappointing as I flat out think Claude Challe is brilliant and before this CD - thought he was infallible. He has put together some not just great CD's but CD's that forever haunt you - they are that brilliant! With that bar set, it's hard when he delivers anything less than a revelation but sadly, this CD is such a case. It's mostly pleasant and interesting but just doesn't haunt you like most Claude's mixes that seem to weave in and out of your subconscious and brain - this one is just "okay," for a lot of other mixers, that would be fine but for Claude - this seems far below him ... what also hurts are two flat out spoken word tracks that are so treacly - you actually shudder and feel a little queasy - they are just wretched. As someone who owns thousands of Cd's, it's rare I want to immediately hit stop or want to figure a way to tape up the Cd so those tracks NEVER play again. So, I can see why newcomers might be so turned off by those tracks ... while Buddha Bar is usually not just reliable but excellent - this is definitely the last one to pick up in the series or avoid entirely as the best tracks can be found elsewhere.

5 out of 5 stars Great Music I won't stop listening........2007-03-09

Great Music I won't stop listening. Very enlightening and soothing.

5 out of 5 stars The Buddha Bar.......2007-02-08

Buddha Bar is a very trendy bar in Paris. It is from there that this and other Buddha bar CDs come from. DJ Challe put together the first and second one. There are a bunch of them now. This one, Buddha bar II is interesting because one can hear Demi Moore singing next to Deepak. There are great African and Latin beats too.
delivery was super fast and got it in great conditions, the company goes to great lengths when it comes to packaging. many thanks!

3 out of 5 stars Good music for tuning out .. . with some suggestions .. .......2006-06-25

Big fan of the Buddha Bar series .. always the best music for all kinds of late night chillout sessions. Love the asian vibe to them .. And if you like that sound, I've recently discovered some more authentic tunes you'll love: Hong Kong's "Celestial". Check them out, they are titled:

Hong Kong Dub Station
Happy Valley
Spirit House

And these album probably take a deeper step into Asia, possibly because they originate from there.

1 out of 5 stars I had to say something...........2006-01-22

I have read many, but never written a review before. I felt compelled this time. I recently purchased this CD and thought it a collection of the most ridiculous music ever. There are a couple of nice tunes but what seems like it may have potential, is abruptly destroyed by some incongruent whim.
Thinking perhaps that I was being a musical snob, I asked the opinion of a friend. She and I laughed so hard at how awful it was, so, I went for a third opinion. The result was the same. In fact it got worse with each listening. We've decided that it will make a nice "booby prize" for my next party. Avoid this like the plague. It is musically inconsistent, non-relaxing and a complete source of irritation. If you want your dinner guests to leave early by all means play this.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Bollywood at Its Beautiful and Bombastic Best.......2007-04-27

If you're looking for a fix of Indian pop culture, this CD will definitely do the trick! "Bollywood Gold" is full of wonderfully vibrant music, all of it overflowing with powerful emotion spiced up with a healthy dash of sentimentality and melodrama. The instrumentation is good, of course, but in this genre vocals are the main thing, and so this CD features some of the classic voices of Indian film--beautiful and charismatic voices either feminine or masculine (and highly distinct in that regard) that tell a story in their own right, that are able to evoke a wide range of feelings in the listener regardless of whether the latter understands the lyrics or not. If you've seen these movies, you'll relive them here for sure. If you haven't, like me, then the enchantment of this music might trick you into thinking you have--or else inspire you to go looking for them afterwards.

As with most "Rough Guide" CDs, this one excels in giving the listener a fine range of tracks both listenable and representative, all lovingly handpicked by an expert aficionado of that specific musical form. "Bollywood Gold" comes to us courtesy of DJ Ritu, who in the liner notes does a wonderful job of introducing the different singers (Asha Bhosle, Lata Mangeshkar, Mohammed Rafi, Mukesh, Kishore Kumar, Manna Dey, Jolly Mukherjee, and Mahendra Kapoor) as well as giving a crash course in the social history of playback singing in Indian film, after which each track (in order) is explained in good, relevant detail (including but not limited to what movie the song comes from). All of this comes after a movingly personal reflection on what this wonderful music meant to Indian immigrant families in England, of how important it was in their lives--making this quite a bit more meaningful than the average "greatest hits" album. And, as this listener found out, some of that enthusiasm is definitely contagious.

I first heard Wally Brill track online at Soma FM, and was captivated by the sound. Very neat beat, even my girlfriend who isn't much into the modern electronic music thinks its one of the coolest songs she's ever heard. I'm buying hte album, thats all there is to it.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent.......2002-04-09

Guys, this CD is awesome. It has so many different rhythms on just one CD that you can listen to it for dancing, gathering with your friends or just relaxation. It has a little bit of everything from all around the world. i hardly recommend it. It's a great buy.

5 out of 5 stars No frills chill.......2000-09-15

This album sends out a chilling reminder to the great pretenders who have jumped onto the chill-out wagon.

Perfect selection of soft melodious tracks that harmonise with Claude's seamless mixing. Salut! For this set based on very laid-back vibes.

Whether you are longing for a mellow night-in or a chill-out session after a hard night-out, miss this album at your expense!

4 out of 5 stars Nice introduction to artists you might not normally hear.......2000-08-04

This came highly recommended by friends who live in Paris. The 2-CD set comes in "dinner" and "party" sets which led me to believe that one set was faster or more dance-oriented than the other, but they are surprisingly similar. Very soothing and mostly eastern/asian-influenced rhythms that are great as Sunday morning background music as you read the paper, or at an intimate dinner party, or even for background music at a cocktail party. I think it would appeal to a wide range of tastes and ages. I have no idea how this compilation compares to the Buddha-bar I mix.

    4 out of 5 stars A decent compilation.......2001-10-28

This 2-Cd set has a pretty decent compilation of songs. CD #2 is the better one, with Sasha making the difference with the excellent "All that I do" and "People of the world". Bindu and XLNC also have good songs here. All in all, a listenable set and a good way to sample various artistes.

Some of the best music to come from the caribbean. I'm of afro-caribbean descent but definitely love the mostly indian tunes. Beautiful and very positive vibes.

5 out of 5 stars Best Chutney Soca CD Ever Made!.......1999-07-13

I have purchased over 20 chutney CDs in the past few years, and I have to say this is by far the best I have ever heard! I have been looking in vain for something as good as this since it came out. If you are a soca lover, like international sounds, or just love to dance, this CD is for you!

    5 out of 5 stars Excellent.......1999-01-04

This CD is a wonderful testimony to the exciting musical artform that is Chutney. Trinidad's East Indian and African heritages have never been so completely represented in one CD before.

    5 out of 5 stars Great Stuff!.......1998-07-19

'Chutney' music was born in the southern Caribbean as a cross-pollination of traditional Hindu devotional songs with West Indian rhythms. First introduced to a wider audience in Trinidad and Guyana by the likes of Sundar Popo in the 1970s, it made the cross-over into the Trinidadian mainstream in the 90s with the growth of Chutney Soca. Although I have not heard this particular CD, I am familiar with most of the songs on it. This CD presents an excellent introduction to the artform, combining more traditional Chutney stars like Sundar Popo and Anand Yankaran with newcomers to Chutney including Soca stars like Ajala and Homefront, a creative band that was part of the movement that redefined Rapso in the early 90s. Overall, I highly recommend this CD for anyone wanting to expand their scope in music and learn something about the next big thing in Caribbean music, combining some of the best of India and the Caribbean.

    5 out of 5 stars Bally Sagoo.......2002-06-21

The CD is great. I am familiar with all the songs as I have watched all the videos before on the telly. Having your own CD is a different story altogether which I now have. Bally Sagoo is a great Music Composer and I am his fan!

5 out of 5 stars Bally at his best. . ........2000-11-05

I am a big fan of Bally Sagoo and the firt time i heard this collection of re-mixes i fell in love with his work all over again. As you can hear in the little tracks they offer on this site, the mixes havent been overdosed with cheap additions nor are they too much like their original version. Bally Sagoo is truley the father of all re-mixes and always shows his colors in his work.
