Album Description
The Police celebrate the 30th anniversary of their recording debut with their first double-disc CD "best of" collection entitled, The Police. The 28 songs bring together the biggest hits from the band's five original studio albums and includes their very first single, 1977's "Fall Out."
From that rarity to one of the most-remembered and most performed rock ballads of the `80s, 1983's "Every Breath You Take," The Police spans the group's six-year journey from sweaty clubs to sold-out stadiums - establishing them as one of the definitive and most popular rock groups in the world.

each of the five studio albums as well as some B side songs, live tracks, and songs not originally found on CD. These songs are arranged in chronological order on four CDs. It also includes the "Don't Stand So Close to Me '86" version.
It is worth noting that "The Police" 2 CD compilation is very good. If you are looking for a greatest hits collection by the Police, this stands up much stronger than the two "Every Breath You Take" compilations. It also provides more depth from the Police perspective than the two versions of "The Very Best of Sting and The Police". However, if one is considering a greatest hits collection, I would easily opt for the "Message in a Box" collection over this 2 CD compilation. You are going to get so much more for your money. You also get the benefits of a boxed set (including a very good booklet). Every song on this 2 CD compilation is going to be found on the "Message in a Box" collection. My recommendation would be to go for the "Message in a Box" collection over this 2 CD compilation.

At three CDs, Rhino's 25th Anniversary Collection may have featured just a little too much. But at one CD, Rhino's distillation of that box set--also titled Anthology--may have been just a tad too short, neglecting cuts ("The Proud One," "Peanuts") that true aficionados wanted on CD. The label remedies the situation with its 2001 Anthology, which, at two CDs, is really only three songs shorter than the 25th Anniversary Collection. Thus, the casual fan may still get a bit more than necessary (including a very vanilla take on Fats Domino's "Ain't That a Shame"). The tradeoff is you'll also get everything you could possibly want by this wonderful group, including the great obscurities (although the label also released a new rarities package, Off Seasons, to coincide with this compilation). It prominently features those amazing '60s radio hits that merged Spector-ish production with East Coast street-corner doo-wop to produce epic miniature rock operas. Much of the imagery in those very class-conscious love stories would turn up in the songs of another great Italian rock star from New Jersey named Springsteen. And to this day, the music and production still sound passionate and glorious. --Bill HoldshipCustomer Reviews:

od in the modern era of rock. Only Deep Purple has been able to do this in my opinion. Actually, I'd love to see a two disc anthology like this one, for the classic Deep Purple lineup. After all, they are one of the biggies. Case closed!

Customer Reviews:
Anthology spans the length and breadth of Ms. Simone's great career, and charts the music of an artist who refuses to be categorized or pigeonholed. Her music is gospel, jazz, funk, traditonal, folk, pop, and so much more. Every song is a gem, but particular standouts are My Baby Just Cares For Me, The Other Woman, Black is the Color of My True Love's Hair, Why? (The King of Love is Dead), See-Line Woman, and her version of I Put A Spell On You. Hard to catergorize but even harder to ignore, Nina Simone's talent is on rich display on Anthology.
Da riascoltare in qualsiasi periodo. Resterà sempre bello.
I am also a big music fan. I love to listen to what shaped and influenced contemporary artists. I enjoy angst-driven female performers ( a la Kate Bush, Tori Amos, Ani Difranco, Janis Joplin). I dig real, I mean true emotional music. Nina Simone has historical significance. Seh has a strong, cult following of fans who really know their stuff. I decided to give it a try. The consensus is that this is THE anthology to get. I believe I have found a new artist to like. I do not get into the slow stuff. I live a wonderful life and I do not have to empathize with a slow, syrupy, piano ballad. I skip those. I do like the jazzy, peppier stuff. Some of the songs constitute blues. That is good too. What I enjoy the most is the sparce, truly raw sound of many of these songs. They are under produced (which I like). "My baby just comes for me" is a famous song, used commercially all of the time. It has a terrific rolling bass line and the piano playing is stunning. "Mississippi Goddam" is a live recording of a blues driven tune. Its pretty cool. "Glory of love" is a peppy song of elation that is hummable. "To be young, gifted and black" is a wonderful, folk tune that sounds so earnest. 'Rich Girl" is a cover of the Hall & Oates song and it does the tune justice. In fact, disc 2 has a lot of covers and I find those, more recent songs more enjoyable and comtemporary then what is on disc 2. She also does a cool version of teh Bee Gees "To Love Somebody". My favorite tune is "I wish I knew it would feel to be free". This is the most rock sounding tune. The instrument intros, at the beginning are cool. I am a fan now and this is definetly interesting listening.
There have been a great many Compilations compiling her prolific output, and a great many more sprung up, after her untimely death in 2003. Most are adequate, but due to licensing issues, most have notable exceptions missing due to her work on various labels and the permission to source songs from a variety of labels, largely proves to be too problematic for most compilers. Well...things are different this time, because for this Anthology (by the RCA Label),they have taken the considerably thankless task of collecting all the essential tracks from the multitude of labels she worked with over her career, as well as including a handful of unreleased tracks. So while you get the more familiar tracks that are considered essential for any Nina Simone compilation to even get a look in ("I Loves You Porgy, My Baby Just Cares for me, I Put a Spell on You, Sinner Man, To Love Somebody, Don't let me be misunderstood"). Which is fine for the casual fans that want a fairly brief, and not to involved summary of her work. But the real benefit of forking out the extra money for this Anthology, is the previously little heard, obscure or important tracks that don't usually make it onto the majority of the cheap compilations floating around. So this Anthology goes several steps beyond the regular compilations by including tracks from Live performances, stunning individual tracks cherry-picked from her lesser known albums, or absolutely breathtaking tracks such as "Funkier Than a Mosquito's Tweeter", that doesn't always make compilations (such as Universals excellent "Gold" compilation). As phenomenal a vocalist as Nina was...singing smooth Jazz, or Bittersweet ballads, Yearning Soul, and Brooding Torch songs, and plaintive Blues....most will agree that Nina was at her best when she was pissed-off or rallying against something, and a fantastic selections tracks, chosen here, highlight that fact. What you sometimes find with some of the Nina Simone compilations out there, are that they tend to lend a little bit too much towards certain aspects of her genres that she sung (for instance Soul, Jazz or Blues) but this Anthology gives a truly rounded overview, that Nina was possibly one of the most Versatile singers of her generation, this Anthology covers it all: Blues, Torch songs, Ballads, Jazz, Pop, Soul, Gospel, R&B, Broadway & Hip-hop (Just kidding!!!). Make no mistake about this...this is arguably the finest Nina Simone collection that money can buy. And short of having to buy a Boxset, nothing else on the market matches this for depth, selection, mood, Arrangement, and versatility. The irony being that this Anthology appeared months after her death, and until then, nothing had previously satisfied in quite the same way as this release does. Bad points??....weeeeell, there is a lot of material here, and its likely Books

Books tines, "King Kong," in which he plays the part of an Empire State Building security guard who calls his boss the night King Kong makes his famous ascent. ("Yes, sir, I looked in the handbook index under 'unauthorized personnel' and 'people without passes' and 'apes,' and 'ape's toes,' but it's not in there....") Something Like This... is a generous sampling of Newhart's best stand-up bits, and while some of his topics--airplanes, hating to fly--have now been so overdone as to be comic faux pas, rather than making his material seem dated they often serve to demonstrate just how rare a talent he is simply because the routines still elicit involuntary snorts of laughter some 30 years later. --Mark Hunstman Customer Reviews:
What can be said about Bob Newhart that hasn't been said. Simply, he is a classic and the situations he depicts, hilarious. I probably listened to his records over a hundred times back then and I am sure my CD will get about the same play. I am anxious to play this CD for my kids, the generation that remembers the Bob Newhart Show on TV, but never heard the records. I honestly prefer Bob Newhart as the original stand up comedian as opposed to the TV star.

Amazon.com The most anticipated of the Anthology series, this disc covers what was arguably the Fab Four's most intensely creative period ('65-'67) when they single-handedly changed the course of popular music. Anthology 2 doesn't disappoint. Outtakes and demos show the building of songs like "Strawberry Fields Forever" and "Being for the Benefit of Mr. Kite," while the pure pop song writing of Rubber Soul and Help! is also documented, along with the sonic experimentation that characterized Revolver. Even if the legendary proto-metal jam of "What's the New Mary Jane" didn't see the light of day here, there is plenty for any Beatles fan. --Chris NicksonCustomer Reviews:
The second interesting part for me was CD 2 - the embryonic growth of Strawberry Fields Forever - revealed in three successive takes here - makes for a satisfying and different experience of the song. It feels somewhat dimensionalised. While not everything is fantastic or that different here, the Beatles were pretty consistent, and what is here makes for a complete Beatles experience. To enjoy it more, watch the companion DVD set. Worth the price of admission? Absolutely.

this is the junk!" It's amazing how stuff that didn't make it through editing could sound so good, but in this case it works.
*Everybody's Trying To Be My Baby - from the 1965 Shea Stadium concert, not used in the film. *I'm Looking Through You - different, with a very funky, earthy sound. *Rock and Roll Music - live in Japan 1966, the final tour. *Good Morning Good Morning - without the chorus or overdubs I greatly enjoyed hearing the working versions of the Sgt. Pepper and Magical Mystery Tour, two of their most creative albums. This album is a must for the serious collector.
Both John and Paul had a knack for tapping into the rapidly evolving zeitgeist of the 60's. All You Need is Love may seem a little precious at this far removed time, but it was the perfect world rally rant at the peak of the summer of love. Similarly, the world's attention in early '68 was on the Beatles celebrated trip to India to study with the Mahariji. What secret had they learned that they could impart on us? Of all the songs written during that sabbatical, the one that would have satisfied the curiousity of of the current youth culture was John's vision of spiritual wonder and inner peace, Across the Universe. A beautifully tranquil mantra to allow the fans a couple of weeks to contemplate before moving on. But the ever competetive Paul would not hear of it. He was working on his very catchy, paternal influenced Lady Madonna. Brian was no longer around to intervene with his wonderful sense of timing. John's moment to capitalize on world attention was shattered. A week later, during the very next session, Hey Bulldog, he brought into the studio for the very first time his new partner, Yoko. There were plenty of songs written in India to fill up most of the white album, and John's sudden disdain for the group venture was not completely evident until that batch was used up. So here it is, before it mangled by World Wildlife, Phil Spector and finally the naked Paul, John's last shot at global connection in all its shimmering glory. (68 was a year where a lot of potentially positive things ended up pretty downtrodden.) "Life is very short, and there's no time for fussing and fighting my friend."

Amazon.com essential recording More filling than the two Very Best CDs in the Otis Redding catalog, less hefty than the four-disc Otis! box, Dreams to Remember is a double set of highlights that's no doubt just what many new and old fans need. Mixing signature numbers such as "(Sittin' on) the Dock of the Bay" and "Respect" with lesser-known works of genius like "I Love You More Than Words Can Say" and "Trick or Treat," this package gives Redding his due once more--and in superfine style. --Rickey WrightCustomer Reviews:

The man achieved a lot during the short span of his artistry, the world has lost a gem
"Dreams to Remember" is beautifully presented by Rhino, who continue to set the bar in compilations. All the tracks are top-notch including "These Arms of Mine" and "Love Man" (two favorites featured in the film "Dirty Dancing"), "Try A Little Tenderness", the extraordinary version of Sam Cooke's "A Change Is Gonna Come" and of course, "(Sittin' On) The Dock of the Bay". There are also some live tracks, which are essential because Otis was highly regarded for his live performances. If you are able to find this collection, I urge you to buy it. And I urge music stores to stock up on their Otis CDs! LOL Pop Music: |
