I don't know if anyone was yearning for a meeting of Jewish and Native American music, but R. Carlos Nakai has planted his foot at its nexus. Here, he teams up with a longtime member of the Philadelphia Orchestra, Israeli-born cellist Udi Bar-David. Both musicians have worked at the multi-culti intersection: Nakai has recorded with musicians from Japan, Germany, and Tibet, while Bar-David has an organization called Intercultural Journeys that facilitates similar collaborations. With only a few exceptions, the tone of Voyagers is muted and solemn. Melding Native American, Middle Eastern, and Jewish themes in oceanic currents, Voyagers moves through slo-mo largos like an oceanic cruiser plowing through a high-viscosity sea. Along with percussionist Will Clipman, they play in solo, duo, trio, and faux quartet settings, the latter with Bar-David multitracking cellos in interweaving lines and counterpoints. Ernest Bloch's "Prayer from a Jewish Life" is especially provocative, as Bar-David's double cello lines perform undulating wave actions while Nakai's flute sounds like a bird struggling to attain the heavens. "Whirlwinds Dancing" is a theme by Nakai, but Bar-David gets into some ear-bending tonalities on the track that contrast with Nakai's soulful melody. Voyagers only turns upbeat on the klezmeresque "Lech Lamidbar--Go to the Desert," with Clipman nailing out the dancing groove on dumbek. While it's not as immediately inviting as many of R. Carlos Nakai's albums, Voyagers does reward you if you book passage. --John Diliberto

GRAN DUO.......2002-04-20

Originalmente este album lo comprè allà por 1997, de pura casualidad, para ver que encontraba de nuevo. Anteriormente conocia el lado rockero y progresivo asi como acustico del señor Howe, con albumes como Turbulence, o el muy buen elaborado Steve Howe Album, no menciono Beginings porque aquì Steve comete el error de cantar, lo que hace muy mal por lo que esta ultima produccion pierde la calidad musical que siempre ha caracterizado a este señor. Originalmente este album Voyagers no es mas que un proyecto que naciò alla por 1995 entre Howe y el tecladista suizo Paul Suttin, de esta union tambien aparte de este disco saliò el album Seraphim asi que con este señor se crearon estas dos producciones nada mas que este ultimo es definitivamente musica ambiental, marcadamente de la nueva era, totalmente instrumental y con un bajo perfil y sonido en la guitarra de Steve Howe. Contrario con Voyaguers que es un album de la nueva era pero con claras influencias jazz-rock y tambien un poco de progresivo, pero muy sutilmente es un album fantastico, magnificamente producido, en el cual Howe nos transporta a un paraiso infinito de sonidos y colores musicales haciendo de esta obra una verdadera joya y demuestra la calidad musical de Steve, aparte que es la primera vez que colabora con èl su hijo Dylan, en la parte percusiva. La primera cancion es majestuosa, y en algunas otras suena una delicada guitarra acustica. Ningun otro guitarrista creo podrà igualar la calidad de este gran maestro, sin menospreciar por supuesto el buen trabajo de sintetizadores del señor Sutin. Lastimosamente ya no se ha vuelto a tener un trabajo en conjunto de estos dos musicos, y con este disco nos demuestra Steve Howe que tambien puede hacer musica de este estilo. Si uste desea disfrutar de musica suave, relajante, definitivamente deberà tener en su coleccion esta produccion.

Disappointing.......2004-12-16

As a longtime YES fan I was sorely disappointed in this effort. Sounds more like something I could cobble together in an afternoon with a studio, a few synths and a drum machine. And I am no great talent. Just nothing inspiring here. And where is Mr. Howe's guitar virtuosity? This sounds more like Muzak or a Wyndham Hill production. Had not heard of Paul Sutin before this effort, not surprising after giving this a listen.

INCREDIBLE........2003-02-15

Once again, Steve Howe shows his amazing versatility and range. The consumate guitarist is totally at ease on this collaboration with Paul Sutin. With rich layers of flowing rythms, Howe has a subtle background approach to most of the music yet his own style clearly stands out. His lead guitar smooth and graceful not overpowering Sutin's keyboards and piano. I would best describe this CD as Steve Howe meets New Age Music with a jazz fusion feel to it. Paul Sutin is truly masterful on piano and keyboards. Son Dylan Howe has his father's music genes on drums and percussion with incredible work all his own.Every track on this CD is simply amazing. For YES fans who follow the bands solo projects,this is a MUST HAVE!!

A Gorgeous Album , Due for a reissue on CD!!.......2007-05-08

This is an absolutely beautiful album from 1973,on which Fahey continues to take a more extended improvisational approach to his guitar compositions; similar to that recently explored on his masterpiece album, "America."
There are only three pieces here, but each is very successful,dynamic and cohesive, incorporating traditional tunes as well as themes from previous Fahey compositions ("When The Springtime comes again"). On many of the tunes John uses a 1930s Gibson "Recording King" (later tragically smashed in a fit of temper)which sounds absolutely stunning.
Years ago, the good folks at Shanachie reissued the album on CD (albeit with different jacket art) but it's long out of print. A real shame as this is indispensible Fahey.

Somewhat uneven but this is still a wonderful voyage to go on........2006-04-09

I got this CD back around Christmas of 1998 and I have to say that it was a marvelous little present as it is a marvelous, if somewhat bumpy collection of 16 innovative songs that demonstrate the early years of the New Age genre and to the mid 1990s. Although it's considered "Celestial" in nature, I found a few of the songs to be somewhat more tribal, medievel in nature that make it more like a nature's voyage than a space voyage like the title suggests. Still, I think this is a strong collection. The birth of the New Age genre is demonstrated in Mike Oldfield's legendary classic "Tubular Bells" with it's innovative electronic sound which is impressive especially by 1973 standards although the 'hiss' sound in the background has caused the song to show it's age but "Tubular Bells" is a pivotal moment as it showed New Age music in it's infancy. 1978's "1/1" by Brian Eno and 1975's "Crystal Cathedral" also are early treats from the then-new genre. For all of it's classic status by many New Age listeners even myself, "Tubular Bells" pales in comparison to these two tracks as they don't suffer from poor sound quality. By far the most amazing song on here is Jon Serrie's 1989 ever-eternal classic "Flightpath". The song starts with a strong intro and becomes a very space-oriented song with a rumbling spaceship voyage atmosphere and a confident optimistic punch to it.

This CD does sometimes drive on slippery roads. "Crystal White Firelight" by Iasos sounds almost like what one would imagine if Tinkerbell suddenly got ultra-high on crack cocaine. It's not a bad song but to me, this really bizarre track always felt like the "Fairy's on Crack!" theme to me. the "Harry's Game" song by Clannad is very good but I have no idea what this song is doing on this collection as it feels completely out of place against the other tracks on this CD.

Nonetheless, for the ocassional speed bumps, "New Visions: Celestial Voyagers" is a definate must-have for those who are eager to try out the New Age genre. Although it's difficult to find these days, it's still worth the purchase. If you like this one, there are even better compilations such as the Elevation series from Earthtone, as well as "Hotel Tara" and "Cafe De Luna".
