Dark Tower Compendium - Anthony Schwethelm, July 28, 2003
One word, one simple word, jumped into my head when I popped this little beauty into my CD player: WOW!

Product Description
Welcome to the "Territories", a landscape bounded only by the imagination. Let your spirit wander along the path of the Beam as you travel this parallel world and drink in its unspoiled beauty. The times are simpler here and "the air is so sweet and clear a man can smell a radish being pulled from the ground a mile away". As you travel along your path take time to witness it's beauty. Listen to the mournful sounds of the ocean as waves break upon the shore of the Western sea. Be sure to linger awhile and celebrate the harvest at one of the small villages along the way.

But be warned. This world is 'moving on' and darker forces are attempting to erase the 'love and light' from this land. Only your heroic efforts will be able to save this, and perhaps, all worlds from becoming a desolate wasteland.

    Album Description

Cyberfunk creations from Bootsy Collins and Bill Laswell, driving funk into the territories of ambient, hardcore, techno, and beyond with Buckethead and Bernie Worrell. Think of this as Funkadelic meets Praxis. Over the years, Bootsy and Bill Laswell have developed an intimate working relationship that has spanned projects for artists as diverse as Material, Herbie Hancock, Sly & Robbie, Praxis, Axiom Funk, Ryuichi Sakamoto, several solo releases for Bootsy, Bernie Worrell and George Clinton, and countless others. The original release of Lord of the Harvest was quickly heralded as the most adventurous Bootsy/Laswell collaboration to date, as it fearlessly burst into new areas of sound, aided and abetted by mutant fretmeister Buckethead, whose twisted guitar acrobatics are most recently well-known among Guns 'n' Roses fans. Hip-hop heads in the know will recognize the presence of some true originators-the Last Poets' Umar Bin Hassan and rap forefather Grandmaster Melle Mel. A listen to the newly remastered version will only confirm how far these innovators have been ahead of the pack.

    Customer Reviews:

    5 out of 5 stars what a hoot!.......2007-01-19

By far, my favorite song on this CD is the first. Its just so over the top that its really fun to listen to. I have played this song for tens and tens of people who would never be considered "radical" or even "progressive" and they have all loved it. Most of the songs on the CD are about Israeli aggression towards the Palestinians. Now the thing you need to know about David is that he is a Jewish performer who sings about such things as human rights and the environment. He takes on everyone! He is in absolutely no way "against" the Israeli or Jewish people. In his personal life, he works with hundreds of such people all the time in order to promote human rights and social justice. His "beef" is any institution or organization that oppresses and bullies other people. His lyrics are in the public domain and so I will share a few sporadic lines from the song "After the Revolution". I love the lines just because I find them very silly (oh--if life could only be as he describes, it would be such a sweet existence...)

From Groton to Tacoma, On many a factory floor, The workers talked of solidarity, And refused to build weapons of war, No more will we make missiles, We're gonna do something different, And for the first time, Their children were proud of their parents, And somewhere in Gaza a little boy smiled and cried...

Prison doors swung open, And mothers hugged their sons, The Liberty Bell was ringing, When the cops put down their guns, A million innocent people, Lit up in the springtime air, And Mumia and Leonard and Sarah Jane Olson, Took a walk in Tompkins Square, And they talked about what they'd do now, After the revolution...

The debts were all forgiven, In all the neo-colonies, And the soldiers left their bases, Went back to their families, And a non-aggression treaty Was signed with every sovereign state, And all the terrorist groups disbanded, With no empire left to hate, And they all started planting olive trees...

George Bush and Henry Kissinger, Were sent off to the World Court, Their plans for global domination, Were pre-emptively cut short, Their weapons of mass destruction, Were inspected and destroyed, The battleships were dismantled, Never again to be deployed, And the world breathed a sigh of relief...

Solar panels were on the rooftops, Trains upon the tracks, Organic food was in the markets, No GMO's upon the racks, And all the billionaires
Had to learn how to share...

    3 out of 5 stars A downward departure.......2006-09-04

I thought this CD was a significant downward departure in quality compared to his earlier work. Don't get me wrong--I'm a big Rovics fan--but this CD is just missing something. I appreciate that he is trying to branch out musically but, for me, it just doen't work. As always, I appreciate the politics, but the music just isn't there.

    5 out of 5 stars music with a punch.......2006-03-24

Though I personally prefer the purely acoustic sound of his other cds over this more folk rock one, this is nevertheless a brilliant cd. Unlike the endless drivel of bubble gum pop songs played incessantly on corporate radio stations and mtv, this music has meaning and depth and right-on politics. Like Norman Finkelstein, Tanya Reinhart, Michael Neumann, Noam Chomsky, Starhawk, Amy Goodman, Yesh Gvul, Gush Shalom, Rabbis for Human Rights and the many Jewish members of Women In Black, David Rovics is part of a growing chorus of radical Jews demanding justice for the Palestinian people. I commend his courage and celebrate his talent.
p.s., if you're interested in Palestinian issues, check out some of the many books by the late great Edward Said!

4 out of 5 stars great songwritting, great message.......2005-02-14

If you're looking for politically charged folk music, you NEED David Rovics. The lyrics are what you're looking for, and they're both poetic and meaningful. I'm completely down with what this cat's gotta say. Most of the songs are great also, musically speaking. As with all folk, however, it sometimes gets a bit repetitive. His nasal voice is also a turnoff. Aside from that, I recomend this disc.

5 out of 5 stars Quality songs of counter culture.......2004-09-13

Return, is an album that tells wonderfull stories of resistance. Highlighting the plight of Palestine, David tells stories that touch my heart. The album is not all depressing though, with many uplifting songs that keep the mood from being too dark. I highly recommend this for anyone interested in music with political substance.

    5 out of 5 stars Great CD!!.......2004-11-19

Laura Chandler has it all in this album - great songs, great voice, great production! If you like Ricki Lee Jones, Norah Jones, Everything but the Girl, or Joni Mitchell, you will love this record. Laura shows a mature sensibility, and a dynamic creative range. I was particularly impressed with how original her work is, while remaining musically accessible - not self-consicous or forced. I am happy to find a little known artist who seems to be charting her own territory.

Laura has hit the spot and found the "X" with this CD! Her music and lyrics reflect the greats like Janis, Croce and others. With strong guitar riffs, an excellent band backing her up and vocals that make you want more, she's sure to go far. Laura, give us more, more, more!

David Rovics is an artist that is unquestionably the primary force behind contemporary political folk music. On Songs For Mahmud, David turns his keen style of song writing to the plight of occupied Palestine, connecting the struggle of the Palestinian people with quest for freedom and self-determination across the world.

    Customer Reviews:

    5 out of 5 stars Brave music!.......2006-03-27

This cd is another thought-provoking gem from the prolific and brilliant topical singer-songwriter, David Rovics. Besides being an amazing lyricist, he has a wonderful lilting voice and can really play a guitar. Some of his songs are funny (though serious), while others are simply heart-breaking. Check out his website at davidrovics.com, or better yet see him live! (He tours constantly).

5 out of 5 stars WHO WOULD JESUS BOMB?.......2006-02-20

Quintessential collection by the leading figure in the current folk revival. Rovics, like Dylan of long ago, has a distinctive delivery, is a provocatively competent and accomplished musician, and speaks about the most important things in a way which everyone must hear. The now justly famous "Who Would Jesus Bomb?" is the most 'to the chase' anthem of the anti-Iraq War movement I've heard to date. DR has a generous web site on which you can hear his current material including the wrenching "New Orleans".

    5 out of 5 stars Courageous Music.......2005-08-11

In these days of cowering journalists, writers and other artists, it is a breath of fresh air to listen to Rovics' work. His cutting and insightful lyrics should humble the social commentators of our era. While Bill Hicks used comedy to attack our complacent reality, Rovics uses music. Inspirational work in the fight for freedom and democracy.

5 out of 5 stars Political songs that I like to hear!.......2004-09-13

Truly, political folk singers of this caliber are hard to find. David Rovics continues singing political songs that are both humorous and serious. In my collection of David Rovics cds, this is probably my 2 or 3 favorite after "Return."

      4 out of 5 stars Great CD.......2005-02-23

First off, I love the Dark Tower series. I am not normally a big fan of new age music, although I love video game music so I guess it goes. Anyway, this is a very mellow, but beautiful collection. 'Ka Like A Wind' is my personal favorite, and 'Crossing Over', which opens the CD, is also wonderful. All tracks have a unique feel to them.
I recommend this CD to anyone who likes the DT series. While not an official soundtrack, each track captures the essence of the subject in its title (in my imagination at least!)

      4 out of 5 stars Wonderfully Unfortunate.......2004-08-06

This album is held to a higher scrutiny than perhaps it deserves, simply because the artist has set the terms for it being the "soundtrack" to the Dark Tower series. Because of that the music is partially judged on how well it fits the story; I am guilty of this along with some of the other reviewers.
On its own, the songs are great--from relaxing to inspirational to ominous--comparable to anything on the Final Fantasy game soundtracks by Nobuo Uematsu. Having said that, the electronic style of "Territories" does not fit the "feel" of the DT stories, which were much more raw and earthy. If the same songs were simply played by a live band, it might be more appropriate for Stephen King's works.
This is a great album if you are, like I, a roleplayer in need of background music for a fantasy/medeival game. It's just not the soundtrack that it says it is.

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful stuff and I normally don't like New Age music.......2004-06-13

I am a HUGE HUGE Dark Tower Junkie, have been since Drawing of the Three came out and this is a wonderful acompanyment to the saga. I was NOT in the slightest bit dissapointed with it. I only hope he does a follow up with the last three in the series! Dennis Downing if you ever read this, please consider doing that. Great job! :-)

2 out of 5 stars too new agey - hard to listen to twice........2004-05-29

I was hoping for a cross between the Good Bad and the Ugly Sountrack and something mystical. This is neither but rather a strange blend of insipid and disconnected.

The books deserve something much better!

      3 out of 5 stars nope.......2003-10-27

If you want a soundtrack to go along with the Dark Tower series, listen to the song that was on Requiem for a Dream and The Two Towers. That's the kind of song that the DT series deserves. This music belongs with The Legend of Zelda more than the DT series. I give it three stars because it's okay music, just not DT music.

4 out of 5 stars Morose erudition, jangly folkish introspection.......2006-09-25

I have a promo copy without titles, which is strange if you want to tell others about a record in any detail! But, track 4 sounds like a lost cut off REM's "Life's Rich Pageant" with its narrative, vocal mannerisms, churning guitar, unassuming but efficient rhythm section, and steady direction. Track 6 is janglier, more optimistic at least in sound. This CD tends to be gloomy in content, but the sound, as others note correctly, manages to boost up the pace thanks to guitar strumming. Track 10 also is a bit quicker, and this helps to balance many of the slower tunes, which get dirge-like and risk becoming turgid. The only drawback of this approach is the similarity of many tracks. Without an assertive singer, the band's affect risks navel-gazing mope sessions. I happen to like the folkish underpinnings of this softer understated genre, but I'd warn off anyone wanting more of a louder, Superchunk, style of indie rock.

The vocals may annoy if you do not like Michael Stipe or Dean Wareham (Galaxie 500, Luna) types of morose erudition. The aptly-named band's background as law students when they made this shows in their careful, if button-down delivery. (See the wonderfully droll liner notes that comprise the cover of their last album, Pleasure of Ruins, for a band history.) But, if heard in the right mood, very late at night or before dawn, it can conjure up an atmosphere that speaks, in lyrics and musical feel, of sand, shore, waves, and distant lands, as the title accurately summarizes.

4 out of 5 stars Saturnine's Second Perks Things Up.......2001-06-24

Saturnine's first album, the amazing "Wreck at Pillar Point" takes the prize as perhaps the best gloom rock album ever made. Alas, the follow up, "Flags for Unknown Territories," sounds nothing like it. That's not to say its bad. Instead of the classic lesiurely downcast yearnings of "Pillar," "Flags" is instead a realatively peppy album of guitar laden pop songs. Not that everything is cheery, which you can't say of songs with titles like "Ivan Boesky" and "The Death of Hong Kong." At times, Saturnine sounds vaugely like fellow guitar meisters Luna without the dopey lyrics. In addition to the two aforementioned tunes, other highlights on the album include "Planes," "Shine Into the Sky" and "Listing" the last of which is starts slowly, but evolves into a fine guitar edged yearner. Overall, Saturnine avoids the sophomore jinx, but "Pillar Point" remains their masterpiece.

        4 out of 5 stars Saturnine's second album a sonic step forward.......1999-02-25

More accessible and more lively than their first full-length effort, the band beats the sophomore slump and sets high expectations (which it met with its followup, Mid the Green Fields, on VictoriaLand Records). Shine Into the Sky won't let go of your brain, while Ivan Boesky and Hong Kong will stimulate it. Palomar is a college-radio-ready ditty that makes you wish it was longer.
