Sonic Tribe

Sonic Tribe is the eponymous debut of a consortium of musicians associated with the Soundings of the Planet label, primarily guitarist Scott Huckabay and label founder Dean Evenson (flute, keyboards). The disc represents the label's first venture into world fusion and involves an assortment of instrumentation: didgeridoo (aboriginal wind instrument), doumbek (Middle Eastern drum, both played by an Australian-born artist known as A.B.), plus tablas, bass, piano, and percussion. A few tracks feature female vocalese, either Middle Eastern chanting or a modestly operatic voice. Nothing groundbreaking surfaces here, but it does offer a number of attractive moments as it shifts from placid, haunting sections ("Siren of the Desert") to more robust, rhythmic selections such as the opening title track and "Circle 3," where Huckabay's vigorous guitar and A.B.'s otherworldly didgeridoo are intertwined to interesting effect. Not a groove-based club recording, Sonic Tribe is suitable for listeners who have a taste for the most atmospheric ethnic explorations associated with Lorenna McKennitt and Steve Roach. --Terry Wood

From Rhythm Magazine
Extolling "peace through music," this conglomeration of musicians from all over the world generates global harmony in sound, covering territory that ranges from North America and Australia to the Middle and Far East. Native American trance guitarist Scott Huckabay, Australian didgeridoo player A.B. and flutist Dean Evenson (with his "digi-horn") form the core of the Tribe, which also includes tabla player Daniel Paul, vocalists Gina Sala and Rita Glassman and keyboardist Tom Barabas, plus viola, doumbek, sarongi and bass players. The title track demonstrates the group's vivaciousness; other songs are about love, the sun, the moon and the earth, with emphasis on the desert and spiritual journeying.

5 out of 5 stars Underrated!.......2001-02-24

Now wait a minute - whilst it is true that this album as a whole isn't anything particularly original, it has one very big thing in its favour: it's GOOD PSYTRANCE. These days so many producers (e.g. post-Dancing Galaxy Astral Projection and so many others), are hitting their presets and doing the same thing over again. This means on first listen, Sonic Mandala may sound a little dated by today's standards. Give it time - listen to the entire album - and you'll soon find that there isn't one track on here that doesn't do the business. It isn't enough just to shove on said presets, get some arpeggios and a beat going - Ollie Wisdom manages to go those few extra miles and make it all sit together well and add that necessary human touch (Posford, of course, is able to do this standing on his head).

Whilst there is the odd spoken word sample that seems a little out of place or just very dodgy, this album is solid full-on energy from start to finish. Don't think IFO since that's even crazier, think something a little more sedated and (thankfully) not including a cheesy, annoying ambient track stuck on the end. Most of the tracks twist and turn all over the place - parts are added and dropped out of the mix every few bars, meaning some actually may be a little _overwhelmed_ since it's so full on. Just go back to it again every so often and you'll agree that all of this means Sonic Mandala will work nicely both in a set and in your bedroom.

I didn't know Space Tribe until recently and bought their latest album(2000 O.D.)and loved it.Since I loved it so much I decided to buy one of their previous albums, which turned out to be Sonic Mandala. And by doing so I have learned an important lesson in trance music: all the trance groups get better with time. As you may have guessed I was disappointed by the cd, don't get me wrong, the cd ain't that bad, it just doesn't live up to their last effort. Overall it just plain lacks depth: you'll feel like your listened to the same tracks over and over. Take it from me: if you buy some Space Tribe, buy one of their latest cd and you shouldn't be disappointed.

5 out of 5 stars I love this CD.......2005-02-18

The music on this CD is Middle East meets the Australian outback. Gina Salá is a lead vocalist for Cirque du Soleil and sings in sixteen languages and Beth Quist has a 4 octave vocal range- need I say more? Trance guitarist Scott Huckabay with soaring flutes of Dean Evenson, didgeridoo and tribal percussion create music that is both uplifting and energizing. This music always puts me in a good mood and the vocals are out of this world.

    Album Description

"Sonic Tribe is a spirited group of musicians culled from around the world. Comprised of Scott Huckabay (guitar), Dean Evenson (flute, digi-horn), A.B.(didgeridoo, dombek), Daniel Paul (tablas) and Gina Sala (vocals), Sonic Tribe playfully re-ignite the spirit of their hauntingly beautiful tribal roots, blending the musical influences of the Middle East with the aboriginal Outback. Energized with trance guitar, didgeridoo, flutes, keyboards and especially effective ethereal vocals, Sonic Tribe is a mesmerizing musical melting pot of passionate world beat music. Highly recommended." --SEPTEMBER 2000 EDGE cetera by Anthony J.W. Benson

5 out of 5 stars Love this CD.......2004-11-12

I absolutely love the combo of flute, didj and hand drums. One of the other reviewers says the first three tracks are stronger than the rest, and after re-listening I might agree... but none of the tracks are bad and the first three would be worth the price if that's all there was!

    5 out of 5 stars Beautiful.......2003-08-22

This amazing work of art has all sorts of exotic rhythms and sounds. The cd provokes feelings and emotions that my other music selections do not.

    5 out of 5 stars Hypnotic.......2001-12-15

I love the entire CD. It's relaxing and uplifting at the same time. Hypnotic, ambient music with cool vocals thrown in here and there. Definitely my favorite from Soundings of the Planet.

3 out of 5 stars A great start, and then..........2001-11-13

You would think that a worldbeat album whose instrumental components include didgeridoo, dumbek, keyboards, guitar, tablas, sarangi, bass, and vocals would be substantial, and in many cases you'd be right. Not this one, though. The first three tracks are great--flavorful worldbeat that does what you'd think it should.

But after that, the album gets weaker by the track. Shmaltz replaces invention, and by the last tune, I had heard more than enough. This is really a shame, because the potential is definitely there for these guys to be substantially better than they reveal on most of this album. For 15 1/2 minutes, they cook. Then the fire goes out and they just kinda sit there.

    Your call.

    5 out of 5 stars Divine Music.......2001-02-07

If your looking for something to transport you to an exotic and relaxing journey this CD is for you. The Middle East and Outback flavors are perfectly blend together. The vocal styling is uplifting. If you like the music of Cirque du Soleil, Sonic Tribe will bring to you the same sound and style almost perfectly.
