Bronn Journey, gentle master of the classical harp. Encouraged by his Welsh mother, he began studying harp, the national instrument of Wales, together with piano at an early age. Although he can play almost any instrument, he admits that Harp is the only instrument Id dare to play for anyone, and adds that in choosing music to play, Its important to put the listeners feelings first. The "Golden Age" referred to here spans The Jazz Singer and the advent of the talkies to the death throes of the old studio system in the 1960s. So vast was the era's musical landscape that even this 42-track, double-disc anthology can't encompass all its peaks. Not surprisingly, the bulk of this collection originated with the Tiffany's of the screen musical, M-G-M, a body of work whose riches here encompass both pop-cultural bedrock ("Over the Rainbow," "Singin' in the Rain," "There's No Business Like Show Business," etc.) and some less familiar, if equally delightful star turns: Clark Gable gamely "Puttin' On the Ritz"; the sassy, 1948 original of "The Lady Is a Tramp" by Lena Horne; and a loopy duet of "Baby, It's Cold Outside" by Esther Williams and Ricardo Montalban. Fred Astaire's elegant, epochal reign at RKO and M-G-M is represented by "Night and Day," "Let's Face the Music and Dance," and three others, while Metro mainstays Gene Kelly and Judy Garland share equal time and billing. It's not perfect--Cagney's "Yankee Doodle Boy" and/or some Sinatra seem more logical choices than the odd "bonus" duet of Casablanca's "As Time Goes By" and "Lara's Theme" from Dr. Zhivago that close out disc one--but it's a stunning, surprisingly comprehensive primer on the Hollywood film musical nonetheless. --Jerry McCulley

This two CD set amply proves that the musical melodies and lyrics from the golden age of the Hollywood musical remain unsurpassed to this day. This generous two CD set offers 42 incredible songs from Hollywood classic musicals. Most of these fine numbers are indeed from MGM, as Amazon correctly notes; but there are some RKO numbers and even a little from Warner Brothers. Thank goodness, though, that most of these songs came from MGM movies; MGM was the only studio that could boast that it truly had "more stars than there are in the heavens."

I love so many songs on these two CDs. Of course, there's the unforgettable classic "Over The Rainbow" sung by Judy Garland; she also performs "Easter Parade" and "Get Happy" on this two CD set and she carries most of the tune for "I Got Rhythm" even though Mickey Rooney helps her a little. I love "Baby, It's Cold Outside" for its' romantic overtones; and Lena Horne's "The Lady Is A Tramp" is flawless! We also get a rare chance to hear Clark Gable sing in "Puttin' On The Ritz;" and Bing Crosby's "Going Hollywood" may be brief but it's a fun song anyway.

There are two "bonus" tracks on the first CD: "As Time Goes By" from Casablanca and "Lara's Theme" from Doctor Zhivago. "As Time Goes By" is a good choice; it is another unsurpassed classic song that brings back memories and touches even the hardest of hearts. "Lara's Theme," however, is from the mid 1960s and I don't consider this period to be part of the "golden age" of Hollywood musicals.

The liner notes are excellent and they offer wonderful photos of the stars as well. The cover art is well done and the reverse cover art tells which movie each song is from and who is performing each song. Moreover, the quality of the sound is excellent especially when you consider that these numbers were recorded quite a few decades ago.

In short, this superlative two CD highlights the glory of the Hollywood musical when a certain type of sophistication dominated professional movie production. I highly recommend this CD for fans of Hollywood musicals, classic pop vocals and fans of the artists and actors who perform on this two CD set.

What an amazon collection of songs! This is bar none my favorite cd just because of the variety and the quality of songs on it. I love music from this era, and this cd is the perfect companion to my life. Love it! Buy it, you won't regret it for a moment!

Apart from the great selection of soundtracks, what really makes this compilation top value is the quality of the sound processing. Executed with finesse, these tracks sound better than when first issued and many are unedited, fuller versions: like "Singing In The Rain", for example. Throw in the great price, and this double disc set is a "must have" for all lovers of classic movie music.

It was once said by the songwriters of that era - "There are two artists you want perform your songs on the big screen, they are Fred Astaire and Judy Garland they sing it just the way we wrote it, for which you will have a guaranteed hit on your hands"...well, this collections certainly has some merit to that statement...because with Judy Garland and Fred Astaire performing seven songs each, there must be something to it.

This collection of musicals still has the magic that we remember from those bygone years...but as long as we have the labels and networks who play and show these wonderful films of yesteryear, they will never be forgotten...hats off to Rhino Records, George Feltenstein (producer) and Doug Schwartz (engineer) and Turner Classic Movies for sharing those 42 selections from 42 films...celebrating decades of the tunes and artists that gave it their all...from what it commonly called "The Hollywood Dream Factory"...The Golden Age of Hollywood Musicals is still among us...gotta love it!

Andre Rieu brings a warmth and pop-like aire to his music.Here he plays popular music with a classical orchestra and adds his special ingredients to it ie:humor (musical jokes for the serious listener),fun,light-heartedness.It's a band of very talented musicians having alot of fun as is evident in the playing and especially if you've seen them in concert.I can "hear" the smiles on their not serious faces by their style of playing...less staccato and with more feeling.Andre and company swing and dance through every track climaxing on Ravel's Bolero from the movie "10".

Sometimes you just want enjoyable music as a backdrop to the job at hand. I turn to Andre to get me through these events. Probably not a glowing endorsement, but if you know of Mr. Rieu's feelings about music, he would just smile and nod his head. This is music to just enjoy for the sake of music - and that is a good thing.

Following up on the release of his debut CD, The Voice, Russell Watson is back with Encore, another mix of opera favorites and popular songs. By now Watson has become virtually a household name--he sells out large concert venues and remains on the top-seller charts. On Encore, we find Puccini and Verdi sharing the billing with Lulu and Lionel Ritchie on the CD's 16 tracks, which range from the much-loved Bach-Gounod "Ave Maria" to "Where My Heart Will Take Me," the theme for Enterprise (the latest Star Trek TV series). Indeed, a more fitting title might have been The Voices, since Watson explores opera, sacred works, film, television themes, and pop songs. The orchestral arrangements on tracks such as "Va, Pensiero" may not win him any fans from the opera contingency, but Watson reveals a captivating sound on pop ballads, including "You Are So Beautiful" and "Somewhere." Russell Watson is amazing. It is truly a delight to hear him sing both the pop and the arias, for he performs both equally well. His rendition of Volare is very fun, and when he sings Somewhere, it's simply breathtaking. His duet with Lionel Richie was also splendid. They really did sound fantastic together. The two low points for me were The Prayer, because I couldn't stand Russell's duet partner, Lulu, and Don't Know How I Got By, because the song just didn't seem to suit Russell's voice. However, the other tracks more than make up for those few inferior selections. Russell Watson truly is a talented man, and I highly recommend this album.

I have all 4 of Russell's Cd's and this is by far his wrose.
The Classical stuff is great but The pop stuff is some of the wrose pop stuff he has even done.

    Mario Lanza was, arguably, the greatest tenor and greatest singer of this and the last century. It is difficult to appreciate him without listening to a variety of selections. This collection has some of his best recordings and exhibits the versatility and variety that he possessed that permitted him to "crossover" from opera to popular music with a ease.

    I recommend this for those who already know Lanza to some extent but want to go into more depth and understand his marvelous skills.

    I had forgotten what a beautiful voice Mario Lanza had. This collection contains opera and pop selections that exhibit the power yet sweetness of his voice. Fortunately, we have his CD's and videos so we can remember and listen to his gorgeous, vibrant voice and personality. I highly recommend this collection along with his wonderful movies, especially The Great Caruso.

    The Mario Lanza Collection is a three CD set and it has 61 songs and they all sound great. The mastering on this set is excellent and the song choice is very very good. It would have been perfect if they added a forth CD with more Arias, Italian songs and Sacred Arias. BUT still this set is a great introduction to Lanza. Lanza's voice was powerful and beautiful; if you are a fan of great singing, you will love Lanza. Highlights on this CD set are; Be my Love, Because your Mine, Serenade, With a Song in My Heart, Temptation, The Lord's Prayer, Ciribirbin, O Solo Mio, Ariverducci Roma, and on and on. They are many many great songs on this set, and I highly recommend it.

    Some of these songs are really stretching for a romantic mood. Especially some of the On the Town songs. It's not that they're not good though....All of this music is from other CDs that have been already been released. Don't limit yourself to just these songs. Go ahead and buy the other recordings. Deutsche Grammophon did the On the Town recording along with West Side Story and Candide. I'd recommend a different recording of West Side Story though. The one of Wonderful Town is the kinda newly released complete version of the musical. It's a good but expensive one. Also, this recording left out some of THE greatest love songs from Peter Pan (Dream of Me, Peter Peter), Trouble in Tahiti (Well of all people, There is A Garden, Finale), 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue (Seena, Lud's Wedding), and Quiet Place (There is so much, too much). I think this recording, though okay, is a stumbling block to finding out about the real Bernstein saga of musicals. And if you are still getting this recording, the sound quality is really good. West Side Story is done by the masters of the opera so they sing it that way. Candide is operetic too, but then again it is an operetta. That's about all I have to say on this recording.

    This is a nice collection of Bernstein miscellany. Note however that the West Side Story, On the Town, and Candide are the "operatic" versions, with Te Kanawa and Carreras, Von Stade and Hampson, and Jerry Hadley, respectively. Bernstein conducts WSS and Candide and Tilson Thomas OTT. The surprise is the bits from Wonderful Town, which was recorded on JAY, not DG like the others. Featuring Ron Raines and Rebecca Luker, it's probably the most authentically "Broadway" of this set.

    This sounds like what you hear when you get into some elevators. It is a collection of songs, mostly from movies, made popular by others and rendered by the Ray Conniff Singers. They do a good job but the results are not like the originals. I suspect there were never intended to compete with the originals.

    This is not bad. The quality is good but it is somewhat homogenized.

    This was probably Ray Conniff's best selling album of all time. The sound quality and performance is exceptional.

    Conniff also shows that he has a sense of humour with his cover of Rolph Harris' Tie Me Kangaroo Down Sport.

    When the LP entitled Film Encores Volume I was released in stereo in 1957, Mantovani was already established as one of the world's best selling recording artists. Film Encores, however, became the maestro's most successful recording in the United States, reaching number one and remaining on the Billboard charts for two years. Now you can hear this phenomenal gold record in its entirety on CD and you will understand why it ranks #32 in the top 100 LPs of the 1950s. Many of these tracks have appeared on several CD compilations over the last few years, but songs like My Foolish Heart, Intermezzo, Laura, and Hi Lili Hi Lo are making their first appearance. Coupled with this best seller is another of Mantovani's historic LPs, Music from the Films, which was his first recorded originally in stereo sound. It represents a more classical, movie soundtrack genre, but is equally well orchestrated and performed with twin pianos.     This is a very good collection of Montovani film music. These recording are so soothing and pleasing to the ear. Most impressive are Montovani's versions of YOU ONLY LIVE TWICE, THE MAGNIFICENT SEVEN and LAWRENCE OF ARABIA. YOU ONLY LIVE TWICE is incredibly beautiful.

    In this year in which fans celebrate Mantovani's 100th birthday, another excellent British compilation of some of the great maestro's original recordings has been released. The tracks on this CD come predominantly from Mantovani's 1957 bestselling LP, Film Encores, his 1959 Film Encores Volume 2, and his 1967 LP entitled "Mantovani/Hollywood." Up until now, the six tracks from the Hollywood LP have been the most difficult to find on CD in locations other than Japan, and it includes Monty's exciting arrangements of the themes from Zorba the Greek, the Magnficent Seven, Lawrence of Arabia, and You Only Live Twice. While these alone are worth the CD price, the remaining selections comprise the very best of Mantovani's film music library, including Unchained Melody (now better known as the theme from the movie "Ghost"), April Love, the theme from The Apartment, and Charlie Chaplin's Limelight. Attentive Mantovani fans will hear the inclusion of a less heard variation of the "golden hit" Moon River in which the maestro replaced the trumpet solo with the soprano sax in a later recording of this forever popular number. Sooner or later, and we hope sooner, everything recorded by the original orchestra led by the incomparable Mantovani will appear on CD. That is a just and fitting tribute to the most popular light orchestra leader in the 20th Century whose music will live on and will be heard to delight fans all over the world in the 21st.

    This is another of Conniff's "two-fer" offerings that reflects great listening, featuring great variety in the song selections. Of course, "Somewhere My Love" is Ray's most successful recording ever, and one of my personal favorites of all time, "Three Coins in the Fountain," tops it off for me. For real variety, compare these selections to the lightheartedness of "King of the Road" and "Tie Me Kangaroo Down, Sport."
