2 out of 5 stars Just Don't Buy It...........2005-05-13

I purchased this CD, anticipating deep, soulful Celtic Music, and what I received was a sort of "Celtic New Age" brew of elevator/shopping mall music that lacks any authentic depth or soul. If Lisa Lynn had simply recorded a cd of her own harp music, my review would have exceeded five stars. Her own genius is watered down and made tasteless by the lack of melody as well as the amateur sounding arrangements of the other instruments. The rather garish cover art should have been my first red flag. If you buy this one, you can't say that no one warned you...

5 out of 5 stars Definite Soother of the Soul.......2003-12-04

When I ordered this CD, I was extremely enthusiastic to hear work by the amazing Lisa Lynne. After hearing the first track, "Sister Moon", I simply fell in love with it. I packed it with me wherever I went. I drove my dear mum crazy trying to get it into the CD player in her car. But in the end, she loved it, too.

My favorite will always be "Knight Ride", a bloody terrific action-sweet piece. By the way, "Fields of Gold" was the one that caught my attention in the samples. Lynne and her crew replay the tune so well that it almost got me up and dancing.

Overall, I'd give this outstanding CD 10 stars if I could. So if you have a heart for Celtic, soothing, or simply magical tunes...well, buy the CD!

4 out of 5 stars not-so-celtic music.......2003-08-20

I bought this cd after hearing bits and pieces of the songs. What I thought I was getting was a great Celtic compilation, however when I actually sat down and listened to the whole thing, I found that I was, for the most part, wrong. Don't mistake what I'm saying--this is a very good cd, and, yes, the songs are played on Celtic instruments in the Celtic "style." However, the music that is played is very non-celtic. What I mean is that, besides two or three of the tracks, the music that is played isn't Celtic at all--it's "regular" music played on Celtic instruments. Most of the tracks start out Celtic-sounding, but by the end of the song you feel like you're listening to more of a Celtic pop band. What I was looking for was an Irish Celtic cd, and what this one turned out to be was more of an American Celtic cd which, in reality, is more like New Age than Celtic.

Now, I did give this cd four stars, and that's because it is still a very good cd. I was disappointed with the song selection, but other than that the cd is practically flawless. If you're looking for a good cd containing some Celtic music, then I would suggest this. However, if you're looking for a Celtic cd that makes you feel like you're in Ireland, living among the Celts themselves, then please look elsewhere.

5 out of 5 stars A Great Album.......2003-06-09

When I bought this my boyfriend rolled his eyes as he always dose when I buy new age type CDs. When I played it later that night he fell in love with the ethirical sounds of the harp, and the divine wistle of the flute. Now I have to fight him to take this CD to work or any where for that matter. A must have for any one who loves great music and wonderfully produced albums.

5 out of 5 stars Luscious, multi-instrumental diversions!.......2002-11-30

Harpist Lisa Lynne, formerly known as Lisa Lynne Franco, is featured in cheerful arrangements crafted by herself and fellow instrumentalists George Tortorelli and David Arkenstone. These contemporary compositions, truly an ensemble effort, borrow from traditional motifs and add modern ambience and edge. Instrumentation used includes mandolin, dulcimer, guitars, cittern, arch lute, violin, cello, gamba, bass, electronic keyboards, percussion, and the distinctive, fluid flute and whistle-playing of George Tortorelli. When I first heard this CD, I was in the midst of reading a fantasy story by Mercedes Lackey entitled "The Eagle and the Nightingales", published as part of the trilogy compilation "The Free Bards". It occurred to me, as I looked at the cover painting by Nora Koerber for "Daughters of the Celtic Moon" and the photographs of Lisa dressed in period garb, that there was some similarity to Lackey's descriptions of her harp-toting bardic heroine "Nightingale". Then I noticed that the fourth track on this album is actually entitled "Nightingale", and later realized that Lackey and Lynn had both collaborated with David Arkenstone on his album "The Celtic Book of Days". A case of mutual inspiration? Or mere coincidence in a small world? Regardless, I find Lynne's music quite complimentary to the spirit of Lackey's brave, gentle and loving character. If you like this CD, check out Lynne's extensive discography. A visit to her website will reveal her complete history of releases, with wonderfully long clips to listen to and without any confusion caused by name changes.

5 out of 5 stars Full Moon Magic~The ultimate New Age experience.......2005-06-02

'Revered for millennia for her beauty and nurturing power, the magnificent spirit of the Moon Goddess is re-awakened in captivating splendour. Medwyn combines deep and ancient sounds with his acclaimed instrumentation and beguiling special effects, to weave a stunning and irresistible spell of unsurpassed pleasure and enchantment.'

Medwyn Goodall has completely won me over with 'Moon Goddess'. He's released at least twenty albums now and is hardly faltering in his innate sense to create some of the most breathtakingly gorgeous pieces ever composed! This entire album, from start to finish, holds a very special place in my heart, but certain songs tug at me more profoundly than others, such as the emotional "Full Moon Magic". Every time I hear this song I come close to tears--it's that beautiful! The melodies are all so incredibly lush with a subtle, uplifting source of energy that you can't help but FEEL this music as it courses through your very being. Sound melodramatic? Yeah, well, 'Moon Goddess' will have that passionate effect on you if only you let it...

'There is one spectacle grander than the sea,
That is the sky;
There is one spectacle grander than the sky,
That is the interior of the soul.'

4 out of 5 stars Uplifting, lyrical, and energizing.......1999-05-16

Goodall's music on this CD is energizing while lyrically rolling you from one piece to the next. I found it was perfect as an accompianment to many tasks in my office -- it soothes, yet energizes. I first heard it in Sodona, Arizona, and it reminds me of soaring heights, majestic rock formations and the South West's diverse terrain. The flute, bells and percussion are superb.

Aoife is the daughter of and niece of members of the Clancy Brothers, the U.S.-based Irish stars of the '60s folk craze. Although she has clearly inherited the family preference for acoustic music, her approach owes more to the current crop of female singer-songwriters than to her Aran-sweatered forebears. Even when singing traditional material, she's an everywoman who could be from anywhere; her style doesn't owe a great debt to any single nationality. Her flowing alto is framed by tranquil, well-crafted acoustic arrangements; the sequences with a solo piano are especially effective. She has chosen an eclectic set list, which includes Australian poet Henry Lawson, the Weavers, and Ron Kavana. The closing duet with her dad is a charmer, but the most unforgettable track is "Across the Blue Mountains," an Appalachian ballad on which she displays an atypically gritty edge. --Christina Roden

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Soulful Celtic.......2007-05-03

I first heard the title piece "Silvery Moon" on AOL Radio's Celtic station. As you know, many times one song that you love from an album doesn't always apply to the rest of the songs on the album. This is one very pleasant exception; I love every piece on "Silvery Moon."
I highly suggest it if you appreciate today's Celtic works.

4 out of 5 stars Quietly Beautiful.......2002-10-21

I picked up a copy of this CD at the Dublin (Ohio) Irish Festival after hearing Aoife perform the wistful "Across the Blue Mountains." I had to hear more, and I'm not at all disappointed.

Aoife (former soloist with Cherish The Ladies) explores the classic and contemporary folk music of the British Isles and Appalachia on this third solo recording. The arrangements are appropriately soft and acoustic, as they naturally complement Aoife's voice. Several songs have a bluegrass sound - think of Alison Krauss & Union Station.

Highlights are without a doubt "Across the Blue Mountains" with the sweet harmony vocals of Julee Glaub and Aoife O'Donovan, and "Kisses Sweeter than Wine," a duet with her father, Bobby Clancy. "The Nightbird" and "Are You Sleepin', Maggie" also stand out as lightly Irish-tinged soft folk gems.

I gave a rating of 4 out of 5 stars because it would be nice to hear some more upbeat songs here, and I know Aoife could do an amazing job with those. This is quiet night music, which is fine, but it leaves you wanting a bit more.

4 out of 5 stars Good Celtic Music.......2004-01-22

This is a great CD to listen to while writing or drawing. It's interesting without being overbearing, and I'm glad to have it in my collection. If you like this, you would probably like "Maidens of the Celtic Harp" as well.

5 out of 5 stars If You Love Hammered Dulcimer Music.............2002-11-25

If you love hammered dulcimer music, this is some of the best. I was at a party given for a man who was running for a local office. In the corner was a CD player with this disk in it. It was on track four. I looked at the CD's case and discovered it was "New Celtic Moon, Between Worlds". I do like some of the Scotch and Irish music but was not sure about Celtic music, much less hammered dulcimer. As I listened more carefully and fell in love with "Between Worlds" immediately! I was able to listen to the rest of the disk and the other pieces also became fast "friends". The Paul Haslem Consort has just the right mix of the hammered dulcimer, human voices, strange exotic sounds and what seems to be an orchestral back up that is absolutely wonderful. I love to listen to the special nuances of each of the pieces. I like a piece that has high notes of one instrument played against low notes of another instrument. See if you can hear the "ssssss" sound in "Between Worlds". Some of the tracks of the "New Celtic Moon" invoke certain feelings and imagery within me. One track makes me think of a young woman dancing gaily in a meadow in the bright sunlight. Another of the sun just coming up over the mountain tops. Still another of fencing practice. .....And more. Even if you do not care for Celtic music but love hammered dulcimer music, I think you will like this disk. My original disk was stolen from me. After more than a year of searching, I am very happy to have "found" it again.

5 out of 5 stars New Celtic Moon.......2000-06-26

Of course I would give it 5 stars. But very disappointed in the CD and the false advertising. It said people who bought Ancient Moon Rising Sun also bought New Celtic Moon. Not a good choice. I am now stuck with both and they are identical. The only thing different is the title and picture on the CD. All the music and wording on both CD's is the same. I love Ancient Moon Rising Sun. So why wouldn't I rate New Celtic Moon high. But because of your false advertising, I now own two identical CD's. I just purchased New Celtic Moon and now that it's opened, I'm stuck with it. I do love the music, but only need one. I'm not sure who is responsible for your advertising, but it would be nice not to be misleading.

5 out of 5 stars Soothing & Stimulating at the Same Time.......2007-07-26

I read about this CD in a book by Julia Cameron. She wrote that when she needs to feel safe and secure, this is what she cues up to set the mood. Since I so enjoy having her as my own personal creative therapist (through her books), I decided to give Hoppe a try. Julia was right-again. The combination of quiet synthesizers and a luminous flute, with simple melodies that gently lead your soul, is a welcome respite from a noisy world. I found the music set my mind free to wander or just float freely. There's a fascinating backstory to this collection of compositions as well.

5 out of 5 stars Massage Music.......2007-03-29

I buy anything from this artist. His music is probably the best I have found to use when I am giving a massage. I am a massage therapist, and in my mind, the background music I use is about 30% of the effectiveness of the massage, so I always try to use music that will calm, soothe , and help relax my clients. The work of Michael Hoppe always does the trick.

5 out of 5 stars A Little Bit of Everything.......2002-12-14

This album was my favourite Capercaillie offering for quite awhile; it has a little bit of everything. Many of the songs are of a slow, haunting persuasion, but there's also a country-esque track ("Crooked Mountain"), and a couple rockier numbers. The highlight of the CD is definitely "Ailean Duinn"; this is the beautiful studio version of the song Karen Matheson sang around the bonfire in "Rob Roy". Another part of that movie made its way onton "To The Moon": the "Rob Roy Reels", which feature Michael McGoldrick, whose continuing collaboration with Capercaillie has only made a great band even better.

4 out of 5 stars There's only one good song........1999-10-06

The best song on the whole CD is Ailein Duinn. But, I personally think that that one song was worth the price of the entire CD. The rest of the songs sounded like traditional folk music.

4 out of 5 stars Beguiling songs and tunes grown from the Scottish tradition.......1998-06-22

Scotland's Capercaillie is one of those bands that always seems able to keep at the forefront of folk. Some traditionalists will decry their flirtation with other sounds and other traditions, because "To The Moon" has an undeniably multicultural feel to it - as though Rob Roy took a quick trip to Spain and the Middle-east, and met some Moors along the way.

While the voice of Karen Matheson has been one of the band's deserved trump cards, this album also highlights the undoubted talents of the other members of Capercaillie. Irish-born guitar/bouzouki player and vocalist Manus Lunny contributes the heartbreaking "Claire in Heaven". Sung from the viewpoint of a child who has died after just 3 days of life, the song is set to a defiantly up-beat tune. Also up-beat is "The Crooked Mountain", a strong song by accordionist/keyboard player Donald Shaw.

It is hard to pick out other highlights on an album that doesn't have a single bad track on it. John Saich's "The Price of Fire" must by any standards be considered a beautiful song - by turns brooding, deep and defiant. Donald Shaw's tasteful keyboard work perfectly complements Karen Mathieson at her most plaintive. Oddly there is little about the song that would define it as Scottish folk, other than a delightful touch of whistle.

Another less Scottish piece, "La Paella Grande", tugs the forelock to Spanish and middle-eastern influences, then turns into a bopping song with an infectious pro-environmental hook. The "Rob Roy Reels", reworked from the soundtrack of the film, are more traditional Scottish instrumentals. The small-pipes of new member Fred Morrison feature strongly.

"To The Moon" shows a top band flexing its musical and songwriting muscles, and going beyond their native Scotland to do so. Traditionalists needn't fear the result, while newcomers will find a beguilingly thoughtful mix of songs and tunes growing out of the Scottish tradition.

I think these folks need to put out another CD. This is definitly on my top 10 favorite cd list. It doesn't get old after a couple listens and sounds better every time it's played. A remarkable richly textured accidental buy from my record club, but what an accident (or was it)!

5 out of 5 stars Ambient Music with real soul.......1999-10-30

I love this cd..It has barely been off my cd player since I bought it. I would love some more information on the group...I know of no other recordings that they have made.

      5 out of 5 stars Excellent!.......1999-09-11

Not unlike Deep Forest,Enigma etc...with a specific "Irish" bent...Very Refreshing...We'll be hearing more from Jimmy Smyth, judging by this offering...
