The right singer for the right music.......2002-12-21
I love music like this that straddles the border between classical and pop or jazz. I had never heard of Valerie Errante before, but she has a perfect voice both for the more classical pieces at the beginning of the CD and the jazzier pieces at the end. She is one of those rare singers (Dawn Upshaw is another) who seems equally comfortable with both styles. If you don't already own a recording of "Blackberry Winter," it's one of those rare songs which can genuinely be said to be worth the price of the entire CD. Wilder reminds me in some ways of another composer who deserves a wider hearing--Ricky Ian Gordon. Hopefully this CD will help bring this composer the attention he deserves.
wonderful.......2002-10-22
Wonderful voice makes this a fun CD to listen to on any occaision. You won't be disappointed.

On the Dark Side.......2007-02-12
I bought this "tribute" with great expectations, but ended up quite disappointed. The violin sounds after a while gets too domineering, monotonous and has the effect jarring my nerves. I've never been a great fan of "tributes", this production makes me even more skeptical.
Too close to rock, too far from classic.......2006-02-01
My most dear album is Dark side of the moon, I'm a hardcore fan of this album, I have purchase almost every tribute there is, I always put myself in the intentions of the players involved in every proyect and I enjoyed every tribute album I have found in a fais measure.
But with this album I did'nt feel confortably, perhaps my expectations were others than what you get in this package. This is a rock album played by a string quartet (ok that's on the sleve so nobody's fooling you) and when I say a Rock Album I mean it, they tried to emule every single sound in the album with their string instruments, so you get a string quartet emulation of the album including the noises, perhaps what I'm trying to say looks great to you but it didn't sound great for me, contrary to that it sound very bizarre in many cases or scary in others not that romantic o soft as the colors in the sleve may suggest.
I think a tribute album is a very hard project, you do it too faithful and you end with a cover album, you do it too different and you possibly lost the great of the album.
In this case I think the players made a String Quartet Cover Album. If you are thinking you're going to get a softer or more romantic versión of the album or you are more into the classic music, forget it, this album is definitively not for you
Try the Dark Side of the Moon a Capella and you will enjoy it more than this, or the dub side of the moon tribute by Easy star if you are more into reggae, or the Out of Phase tribute to Dark side of the moon if you are more into Electronic, or the moon revisited or... This one was the less enjoyable tribute to dark side of the moon I have heard.
Anyway Roger Waters enjoy it a lot, ask for snip or samples of the album and try it by yourself, but consider yourself aware...

Along with Michael John LaChiusa and Adam Guettel, Ricky Ian Gordon is one of the Young Turks of New York's musical theater. Like them, Gordon shuns both the accessible pop of a David Yazbek and the bombast of a Frank Wildhorn, preferring instead to write post-Sondheimian art songs. The numbers here (with lyrics by Langston Hughes, Edna St. Vincent Millay, Dorothy Parker, James Agee) span two decades. They are marvelously interpreted by the likes of Audra McDonald, Dawn Upshaw, Darius de Haas, and Judy Blazer. Blazer ambles through "Resumé/Wail/Frustration" with delicious jazz-age wit, while Upshaw once more proves that she's a classical singer with an uncanny flair for the nonclassical repertoire. Note that anyone who's expecting anything resembling a beat is advised to look elsewhere. --Elisabeth Vincentelli
Customer Reviews:
Phenomenal!.......2001-09-27
Ricky Ian Gordon is a very talented composer and poet, and the songs on "Bright Eyed Joy" display his magnificent gifts. There is not a contemporary composer who has his talent of fitting text to music, and the singers on this disc bring his compositions alive. Track 17, "Once I Was," will make you weep!
Incredible.......2001-06-02
This is an incredible CD, from the sparkling orchestrations which are chamber but in the way they are mixed everything dances out at you, to the vocal interpretations which are so innovative for a recording of this type...settings of poetry but sung by regular, albeit, extraordinary regular people (except people like Dawn Upshaw and Audra McDonald who have already established themselves as major vocal artists)so that the songs feel personal. There is about this CD an incredibly meaningful air...moving, magisterial, powerful...straight from "Heaven" to "Joy" Gordon takes us on an inexorable journey through life towards transcendence and he and his brilliant players and performers succeed...Nonesuch does it again...Superb! Kudos all around. Gordon is a REAL composer, with a deep understanding of poetry as well as a fabulous gift for writing words himself!
Quite an enjoyable CD.......2001-05-20
Being a fan of Mr. Gordon's, I couldn't wait until this CD came out. And I was not disappointed. The music is a cross between classical art songs and standard Broadway fare. Perhaps most enjoyable are the tracks sung by Audra McDonald, some of which were previously released on her first solo album, Way Back to Paradise, but which were supplimented with some additional tracks that really suit her dramatic voice and extensive range. Two other highlights include "Afternoon on a Hill", "Souvenir", and "Once I Was", which demostrate clever writing on the part of the composer, as well as true understanding of the texts on the part of the performers...I feel that Mr. Guettel performs well on this disc. It may appear that he does not have the vocal training that others do, however, his interpretive skills as well as his clear understanding of texts and emotions make his tracks poignant, and his voice is quite pleasant. My only complaint would be that Darius De Haas was included on the disc instead of Billy Porter, who I have seen performing these songs live, and quite well. Mr. De Haas is quite adequate, I simply prefer the power and exultation that Mr. Porter displays when he sings the compositions. Overall, however, this is a wonderful inclusion to anyone's collection, especially anyone who is a fan of anyone writing new, sophisticated theatre music.
Don't Walk, run ...run ...run ...to your stores.......2001-05-08
A huge fan of Donald Katz's "Home Fires" in which Mr. Gordan and his family are the central characters in a moving biographical tribute to an American Family, I have followed the story of this talent ever since. What I have to say of this incredible cd is nothing less then INCREDIBLE. Though there are some major comparisons to the likes of Stephan Sondheim, I am sure Mr. Gordan does not mind in the lease, but in the ened, he is all his own. Do not walk to get this cd, run to get it ....run like there is a wild fire following you to your nearest cd store ....If you don't love it, if you aren't moved by every lyric and strong and chord, then all I can say is, your not a real musical theater fanatic.
Where did all the decent singers go?.......2001-05-07
It is such a tragedy that such beautiful music such as this CD is ruined by inadequate singing on behalf of the performers. There is ONE exception to this, of course, and that being Audra McDonald. Darius De Haas and Theresa McCarthy are both excellent musicians in an artistic sense, but they lack any sort of vocal substanance needed to carry off these difficult songs. Unsupported and in need of clarity are how I would describe their performances. Dawn Upshaw must posses some of the most glorious high notes ever to be heard, unfortunately, she swoops and scoops all over the place and manipultes her vowels in such a way as to distract the listener. Since when did this become acceptable? Adam Guettel is not a singer and I never understood why he insists on attempting to sing anyway. I still remember the first time I heard "Come to Jesus" with he and Audra. He paled so much in comparison... In conclusion - if you can stand the singing (which is very hard, I still can't force myself to listen to McCarthy attempt to sing track 4, or maybe 5)then this CD is excellent. Gordon tends to be very elementary in his compostions, so there are many hummable tunes due to his repititious themes. As a fan of art songs and Dawn Upshaw/Audra McDonald, I've been looking forward to this CD. If you are fans of them as well, and don't mind paying [the price] for about 4 good songs, then have a go at this CD!!

Magical, modern folk music at its finest!.......2004-01-01
Paul Reisler and his group Trapezoid offer artful and heartfelt arrangements of tunes old and new. Their sound is smooth, polished and hauntingly clear, emphasizing the accoustic but with some electronics in the form of guitars and synthesizers. Composition styles range from dreamy to plaintive to somewhat jazzy. Each track--and especially the progression of all of them together--brings to the surface emotions you didn't know you had, explores them with honesty and depth, and then lets them dissipate gently like ripples in a pond. The sung numbers are characterized by the exquisite vocal harmonies of Cheryl Hurwitz and Anne Louise White. Instruments used include guitar, saxophone, hammered dulcimer, violin, clarinet, harp, mandolin and percussion. Trapezoid is a group that I am hard-pressed to describe in words, as it is different from any other represented in my collection. Their work is innovative, engaging, intricate, unexpected and truly special, and "Moon Run" is my favorite of their releases. Do yourself a favor: click on the listen links to the available tracks so you can hear for yourself, and try also their 1994 release, "Remembered Ways". If you enjoy Trapezoid's style, you may also appreciate the warm and folksy "Homecoming" by Jerry Read Smith, and the work of Paul Reisler and other hammered dulcimer masters on John McCutcheon's terrific album "Step by Step".

5 Stars, And I Don't Give Five Stars Often.......2006-07-23
This Vinyl record has been in my collection unplayed since 1985. I was transferring vinyl to my computer this weekend, and played this record. Wow.
I don't know if I just in a receptive mood or what--but Mr. Tomlinson spoke to me and I just had to get settled and relaxed and I listened to the whole disk.
His melodies are pleasant and his words profound and meaningful, but not so that they get in the way.
I'm not really a touchy feely kinda guy, but Mr. Tomlinson touched me this afternoon. Thanks Michael.
Five Plus Stars For MT.......2006-03-04
This is the most incredible collection of songs in my library of over 2,000 CDs - bar none. I was introduced to Michael Tomlinson listening to KKGR in Anchorage, AK back in 1985. The first song I ever heard of his was "Yellow Windows" while driving down the pitch black Seward Highway south of Anchorage. As I rounded a corner, the yellow windows of a remote restaurant I was heading to came into view. Talk about chills. Brilliant, touching lyrics and searing vocals make this a must. I call "Waves" a thematic song - much like Springsteen's "Tunnel of Love" makes me feel like I'm at Cony Island on a fall day - this tune makes me feel as if I'm heading out on a boat tour over choppy waters. There is not a single bad song here - and kudos to MT for taking back his creative license and not kowtowing to the record moguls by having to churn out an album (ready or not) every year or so. Michael is genuine - thinking I would never get a response, I found his e-mail address on his web site and told him the above story about "Yellow Windows" - he wrote back the next day with a beautiful story on how he was inspired to write it while living in Whitefish, Montana.
A great place to start........1999-12-15
MT is perhaps the most underappreciated artist I can think of. This may be largely due to the fact that he is not under the thumb of any record company, thereby maintaining control of his work, and being allowed the luxury of being true to himself. So, although no media blitz accompanies the release of each cd, the result, beginning with this beautiful album, is a collection of gorgeous songs. Once you listen to this, you'll have to have all his albums so you should start here at the beginning, It is certainly one of his best. Songs of life and love and nature will touch you....turn the lights out and put the headphones on.People often go on about artists that have special meaning to them, or songs they are attached to for whatever reason, but I can honestly tell you that anyone I've ever turned on to this album has loved it and has become a fan. MT is a wonderful singer songwriter with an amazing voice and a special gift for lyrics. Run This Way Forever is a guaranteed good listen. Check out his homepage to find out more about him.
His best album.......1999-06-16
Fabulous accoustic work and haunting lyrics set this one above all MT's work. If you're just bumping around and wondering which MT to buy, this is it. It will touch and awaken parts of you that may now be dormant.
ABSOLUTELY MARVELOUS!!! TUGS YOUR HEART AND DOESN'T LET GO!!.......1998-10-19
THE MUSIC ON THIS ALBUM HAS GIVEN ME MANY HOURS OF JOY...SO MANY THAT I WORE OUT 2 CASSETTE TAPES. I AM IN SEARCH OF THE CD AND HAVE BEEN FOR SOME TIME NOW. MY FAVORITES ON THE ALBUM ARE: EVERY SINGLE SONG!!!!! I CLOSE MY EYES AND I'M TRANSPORTED TO A HOME WITH YELLOW WINDOWS OR INTO THE BLUE EYES OF A LOVER. Thank god for cowboys. I was a friend of Tyrels. He would be very pround and happy with the album you wrote. I wish you the best of luck in the coming future. I hope your dreams come true. Tell lynnie hi for -k- . I was at the Rodeo the our little cowboy was taken. thanks Steven G

I know this album is going to go far! He is a great preformer and a great person. I love every song on the album.
undertaker.......2003-03-14
this is a well done album and I really like all of the songs on it. Please take time to play the whole cd. You can understand all the words and it's a very well displayed cd. I really enjoyed the undertaker song and I would like to see this artist go far with his music.I would pay to see him in concert any time.
Leave The Light On.......2003-03-14
I Love every one of the songs on this album because it is my opinion that they represent what country music is supposed to be. From the heart and true life experiences. Richard Espinoza's song;LEAVE THE LIGHT ON; moved me to tears as I listened to a young man full of love for life and adventure and optomistic hope for the future only to be cut down even before he really got started. The song represents hundreds of like stories around the world and just about everyone who listens to it will be able to relate to its true meaning...I really loved the song: FAMILY CABIN; This is a very timely fun song seing what is going on in the world today regarding our families being torn apart. According to this song family unity IS NOT a thing of the past..
"I NEED YOU NOW" A tribute to all parents that care for the welfare of their children and care enough to guide, nurture and give willingly and liberally of their advise and wisdom and when needed a gental tough love persuasion to keep their offspring headed in the right direction and of the trust and love that the children of these type of parents have for them. An Awsome message!!! I could go on and on about each one of the songs of this album but space does not allow. I love the backup instramentals and guitar picken. Richard has done a great job on this album and I hope to see many more from him.
If the title track doesn't make you cry............2003-02-15
I have heard Richard live as well as on this CD. He is incredible. Whether playing the CD going down the road or listening to him play acoustic around a campfire, he will be a rising star. The title track, Leave The Light On, will make you shed a tear. The song about the undertaker will leave you crying too, just this time from laughter.
