Picking up where such seminal Eno recordings as Music for Airports and Another Green World left off, the inveterate innovator-producer's first recording in four years is a surreal tableau of loping beats and eerie sounds enveloped in dark yet serene atmospherics. With German percussionist Schwalm contributing softly swinging drumming, Eno is free to dabble in sounds ranging from Middle Eastern string quartets to crying machines and Vocoders to happy, babbling babies. One of Life's many highlights is Laurie Anderson's cameo on "Like Pictures Part #2," as she enunciates her words above the song's spooky, soothing ambiance. "Bloom" contrasts happy baby chatter against distorted heartbeats and sinister samples; "Night Traffic" paints an empty urban center at dusk with shifting shapes and '70s jazz percussion and piano. Throughout Drawn from Life, Eno and Schwalm cast a spell of spectral dislocation and foreboding. It's like what dying prostrate in the snow must be like--slow, sleepy, beautiful, and chilling. --Ken Micallef

Customer Reviews:
Eno and Schwalm a match in ambient history .......2006-10-08
This has become my second favorite Brian Eno album. If you are a fan of his music you will surely appreciate this recording. Laurie Anderson appears on two of the tracks as well.It is a more moving and rhythmical expression than some of Eno's dry ambience work, but it seems to take you on a sound journey of deeply emotional nightime movements. Along with J. Schwalm's composing genius the two really have a winner here. I suggest this album for any eno fan that likes his later work.
dissappoint.......2003-03-14
I had big expectations from Eno's new album. I love Ambient2, ThePearl, Apollo, ShutovAssembly.
The DrawnFromLife is getting me nervous! I think the babyscream in a song is a very bad idea. + The long silence after the last songs.
In sum up this album for me sounds like a bad MassiveAttack album.
Top-class electronica.......2003-02-24
What a great project! Definitely one of the better ambient electronica releases of recent times. As professional and classy as you would expect from a Brian Eno project, but Drawn from Life is also clearly the work of two men who complement each other per fectly. Schwalm’s inventive beats and percussive figures forming a perfect bed of sound for Eno’s rich sonic tapestry. This is ambient with a beat â€" think a high-gloss Arovane or Dntel â€" and a superb music to snuggle up to on a Sunday night. But as opposed to Music for Airports, for example, this works best with active listening, preferably in the dark to soak up the brooding, nocturnal, lush atmospheres. Don’t expect miracles: this needs at least one or two listenings to kick in. The rest, as they say, is plain sailing. Why only 4 stars? I don't like the vocally bits. I find them unwelcome, unecessary accessory (cheese alert) to this kind of music, regardless of whether its Laurie Anderson, Terrence Mckenna or Martin Luther King doing it.

Lie Back, and Enjoy !.......2002-08-04
I always greet a new Eno album with caution...... he truley is a box of tricks, and for that I am grateful. This collaboration with J. Peter Schwalm however is quite wonderful.
I recall listening to this for the first time, and a second, and a third...continuously... I enjoyed it that much.
For me the lush strings which seldom stray in tone nor melody, is a typical Eno trade-mark.... and one that I love about his work the most. The added precussion makes for a slight twist from what I would have expected to hear on such compostions, but they do sit well, and do pull this album out of almost becoming another ambient collection.
The added bonus of having Laurie Anderson on, "Like Pictures part #2", just adds to my enthusiasm for this album.
It is hard to pick out any stand out tracks, as this album really works as one piece from start to finish.
Lie Back, and Enjoy !
(With)drawn from life.. cold, numb, yet organic........2002-06-22
I say 'cold' because that's the impression I get from Eno's work throughout this masterful recording; it starts with the chilly haze of "From This Moment" and though numerous sounds and tones are used, the overall impression doesn't fade. I have to say that an equal collaboration was the best idea for this album. Brian's work alone here would have ended up as Ambient 5: Frozen in Ice. Schwalm's light fleeting percussion, however, lends a wealth of shapes and textures to the music, giving it an organic edge and a pulse.
While this album is still quiet enough to serve as background wallpaper for reading or working, it's just busy enough to keep your attention if you sit down with a good pair of headphones. It's like a dream of floating in an endless white cloud while various images and sounds come into focus, clear for a moment, then vanish. City streets, Laurie Anderson talking about pictures, kitchen dishes clinking, swirling snow, and the occasional lapse of silence. Eno and Schwalm use no real melodies and only random fragmented words, but nevertheless draw the listener into their own web as convincingly as any fine lyricist I could name.
I just looked over those previous comments and realized they sound a little ridiculous - fanciful, maybe. That's the effect this album has. It's calming, subtle and tends to stimulate the imagination. It doesn't merely blend with the room or the background as most of Eno's other work does, but blends with your own thoughts as well. This is some of the best chill-out music I've ever heard.

"Seduction for Allah".......2003-08-04
Some music is great for focusing intently on, and some is better for sort of background listening. This disc works on both levels. You can sit right in the focal point of your speakers and just hang on every note of this beautiful music, or you can just play it as you do other things. I almost always listen to this cd while using the "stadium" listen-mode on my receiver. It really makes me able to just (sonically) picture this music being blasted out of a loud-speaker in the tower of a mosque. That's one of the 2 mindsets in which this cd almost always puts me. Just echoing and reverberating down on we the people as a call to prayer.
Kayhan is one of the first people I think of when I think of how the West views violins/fiddles. Kayhan is just a flat-out brilliant improvisor and an almost unsurpassed master of tone. When I listen to him and various other fiddler/violinists the world over, it just hurts my heart to think of how the Western "classical" world tends to think it's the best at everything, even though there is almost no one in that world who has the depth of soul and improvisational prowess of the master musicians of the East.
It's been a very long time since I have listened to the first 2 Ghazal cd's (I don't have the 3rd one) so there won't be any sort of comments on whether I prefer this or those, but this cd just never gets old. I've had it for a couple years now and it just always pulls me in.
I tend to despise anything I perceive to be "romantic music". Not sure why, but Western "love songs" almost give me a need to vomit. While I don't consider this to be a disc of romantic music, there is something so ungodly sensual about it that I can't even listen to it without just wanting to caress a woman through a silk sheer inside a circle of candles or something. This cd is a toe-curler! Improvisation of the highest order.
Most beautifull Kamancheh recordings in the recent years........1999-06-26
Kayhan Kalhor is one of most accomplished Kamancheh players in the Iranian music industry. His latest CD reflects his abilities as a master of this instrument. A wonderfull CD to listen to and appreciate.
A perfect album.......1999-05-25
Kalhor is best known to U.S. audiences for his work as 1/3 of Ghazal, the group that fuses Hindustani and Persian music. On this release he focuses on his own tradition, the classical Persian tradition, updating it with somber Kurdish folk melodies and, of course, his own innovations on the kemancheh, or spiked fiddle. As with all austere, composition-based performances, the innovations here are extremely subtle and Kalhor maintains the mood of the piece over the entirety of the album. Pejman Hadadi, the percussionist, provides rolling cascades of sound in complex rythmic tandem with Kalhor's kemancheh. Hopefully Kalhor's solitary updating of Persian classical music will continue along with the fusion of Ghazal.

American Song Potpourri.......2000-08-01
The 28 songs on this CD provide a broad spectrum of American art songs. JanDeGaetani possesses a beautiful mezzo-soprano voice and ideally expresses the proper emotions these songs require. Gilbert Kalish's piano supplies the necessary support without getting in the way of the singer. All in all, this is a good collaboration.
Kalish plays like a pig........1999-12-02
While I enjoyed De Gaetani's singing, Kalish's piano playing reminded me of a player piano.
a beautiful rendition of 20th Century American Song.......1999-06-06
This is a great album. It spans the spectrum of 20th Century American music from the tonality and romanticism of Stephen Foster to the experimentality of John Cage.
Jan DeGaetani and Gilbert Kalish, with their understanding and sensitivity to the music of their time, combine to form a duo that sets the standard for interpretation of this music.
Students, professionals, and general classical music lovers will cherish this CD in their library.
If you want an introduction to American Music of this Century, this album provides the most accessible doorway to the widest array of styles I have heard.

Customer Reviews:
A haunting blend........2003-07-23
There are certainly Celtic influences on the album, from the Gaelic lyrics to "The Coming of Lugh" to the haunting tin whistle solo in "Shasta the Wanderer." But there are African and Middle Eastern influences, too, plus a smattering of sensual gypsy spirit as well.
It's definitely a multicultural experience. Cait McWhir's strong, lush vocals are strongly reminiscent of Dead Can Dance's Lisa Gerrard. In fact, I'd be surprised if several members of Haunted By Waters didn't learn a few things at the Dead Can Dance altar. That's not to suggest this is a copycat band; the Haunted By Waters sound is entirely its own.
Wow !.......1999-12-03
Fantastic! Incredible! It has been a LONG time since I've come across any music that has evoked deep emotions. This has done that. Very talented....... Very original.....Well once again WOW! Intense! Vamp (Mark)

This is a landmark set: the complete works of one of the most important composers of the 16th century, in performances of grace and clarity. However, you can get it for less than half of the US price by buying it at Amazon.co.uk. At GBP65.20, it works out to just over $100, or about $10 per disc--quite a bargain on a major addition to any serious early-music collection.
