Still Dream Theater in the deep.......2007-08-03

First, I am a devoted fan of the band so I may not be as much impartial as I would want to. Still, I think that it is a very good album. Like I read from other review, it is what "Train of Thought" should have been. It is different from other Dream theater albums and definitevely more heavier, but it keeps that prog vibe on the deep. Particularly, I prefer the more prog-melodic style of "Images and Words" and "Scenes From a Memory" and I hope the next album to be a "Metropolis part III", but I still think that "Systematic Chaos" is a very well developed album.

This band still rules!! Just saw them in San Diego on the first nite of the tour.(July 24, 2007) They played every song on this CD. Great stuff!!
I bought the CD that comes with the Bonus DVD. It has all behind the scenes at the recording of this CD. Pretty cool stuff. Portnoy is funny, with his Ali G impersonations. This is a great CD!! A must for all Dream Theater fans.

I am so happy I decided to buy this. It helps me understand what other parts of the world are like the people and land. Places I never even knew existed. I have a better understand and Idea of what the world is like now. I have even become very interested in learning about other places and to visit them. It is my first resource to picking a place to go on vacation. This is a great resource if you want ideas for places to travel. My only complaint is that I wish the book listed a little more practical information on each country. They dont tell much about the countries. Also I would highly recommend purchasing the hardcover edition as the paper back in this book is so large that it quickly became unglued from the spine. Definatly get this book if you are curious about places of the world or if want to glimpse into all the countries looking for places to visit. I didnt know how many choices there are. The photographs are wonderful and real of what daily life is really like in each country. Not like the romantic touristy photos in other books. This is really healpful because you dont just see all the beautiful good places in a country. You get to see the reality wich is really helpful when choosing a vacation destination. I only give 4 stars because of the lack of information provided on each country is very small.

This is a beautiful coffee-table sized book that gives the reader a "taste" of every country in the world. As a traveler, I love the pictures and the opportunity to learn about countries I read and hear about. It'a a great introduction and the references to movies, books and movies about the country are helpful too.

This is a very thoroughly written travel reference book which gives an overview as well as many beautiful images of every country on the globe. To top it all off: This book also contains further info about movies, music, and books about each country, so you can expand your cultural experience...

I especially liked reading the vivid descriptions of local foods. For some countries this book has become a substitute for traveling to them, for other countries it has sparked more curiosity!

This lonely planet book represents an interesting and entertaining addition to our home travel library which gets consulted frequently!

It is a good looking book and is often picked up for a quick glance. I find it to be an interesting book for looking into countries I have never visited or even considered visiting. It piques your interest enough to do further research. I cannot comment on the accuracy or selection of information on each place.

Actually, I'd rate this book 3.5 stars, but not 4. Nice photos. Useful information, but just not what I was looking for when I have seen lots of Lonely Planet work.

Waste of Time; Waste of Money.......2007-01-14

This book is a total waste of time! Both the writing and photography is uninspired. You really have to question the abilities and biases of the writers/editors who chose cities such as Maputo (Mozambique) where the negative include "street crime, dodgy police officers, poverty and lawless drivers", and Pyongyang, which is in North Korea. One of the listed weaknesses here is "bugged hotel rooms" and that "you can't leave the hotel without a guide". These two gems made Lonely Planet's list of best cities in the world, yet great places like Santa Fe, Boston, Victoria (Canada), Bergen (Norway), Menton (France), and Lucca (Italy) were left off the list! My suspicion is that the editors at Lonely Planet wanted to give equal time to a lot of places in the third world, even if the truth is that some of the cities listed there are places most travelers/tourists would never want to go to. It may be politically uncorrect to say so, but I think that it's true.

Anyhow, I am so glad that I was able to get this book from the library so that I did not waste any of my hard-earned money on it!

Normally, Lonely Planet is hands down the best in travel guidebooks and literature. When LP published "The Cities Book" recently they reversed that trend. Once again the liberal writers have found every possible opportunity to take shameless cheap shots at conservatism not just in the US this time but in just about every country in the world. The pro and cons are great for a 60's gay, pot-smoking, big business protesting, secular, Green peace loving, socialist, tree hugging, anti-Christian, vegan hippy. Of course everyone agrees that meat hardy meals are a big con for restaurants but yet vegan friendly. This is coming from the same book which lists cultural traditions as a pro but traditional dishes (heaven forbid they have meat) are a con. Just tell a third world country, "Your thousand year traditions are a pro but as long as they fellow our loony liberalism". The writers should just say patriotism is unacceptable for any country to have. Sarajevo lists "nationalism" as a con. Luxembourg lists a con of "conservative attitudes". These are not true pros or cons at all but more of the personal disagreements of each city's public opinion .
Would it really matter to a the world traveler whether or not we know about Lonely Planet's personal political views? How about listing some pros and cons about it city that are actually relevant towards visiting or living there?

The only surprising aspect of the entire book is that Amsterdam is not rated #1. Who would of thought the worldwide Mecca for liberals didn't receive enough praise following the theme in which this book is written. If you don't believe me look at a pro for Amsterdam; "Liberal attitudes(world's first homosexual marriage and legal euthanasia). Of course! We all agree that is a tremendous pro for a city to have. Thank god I know Amsterdam legalized euthanasia, that is really going to come in handy when I visit. Although Amsterdam does get a gold star for "Liberal attitudes", surprisingly it is not #1 for the Lonely Planet publishers. The authors are quite simply too blinded by their own ideology to produce an honest book about the great cities of the world.

Would this book be a good educational reference for children? Highly doubt it. The pictures are full of nude sunbathers, topless women painted in "body art", transvestites, and people drinking at a bar on every other page. Is that really the best photos you can find that would represent a famous city that has so much more to offer?

From the laughable pros and cons to the complete butchery of some great cities such as Austin. Out of all the pictures of the great city of Austin all LP could come up with is a picture of "where will the chicken poop", someone eating chicken, a dog fashion show, and a women getting a tattoo on her thigh.

By the end of reading "The Cities Book" you can move on to "Das Kapital" next. Read between the lines not so carefully and you will see the anti-capitalism all over the pages. The Havana page shows a man with Hugo Chavez and a shackle and hammer captioned with "A cool commie shows off his true colors". "The Cities Book" is a clear attempt to discredit cities who do not share the same liberal ideological views as the publishers and want us readers to have the impression that that city is "bad" or has many negative aspects because of it.
Point overall else is; this book is very laughable from Pros & Cons to the pictures "representing" each city. Don't waste your time or money unless you choose to see the world through Howard Dean's eyes and not from your own.

Great Help in Learning Spanish.......2007-05-13

Mexican Spanish is a book I bought because I live in an area where there are many Mexican people. I have been trying to learn enough of their language to "get by". This book could be a tremendous help.

However, it is printed in very small print, as the book itself is pocket sized, a nice size to carry with me. The small print is understandable but the pastel colors of the text is more than difficult to read, especially since the print is so tiny. I think whoever put this book together was going for "attractive" but what I need most is black text!

Otherwise, I would reccommend this book to anyone who has some Spanish, surely not to someone who has not done at least a little studying of the language.

The book is well designed, just, harping on it again, the text needs to be black or at least dark red, navy blue, dark brown, dark green - to differentiate subjects. It is almost impossible to see the tildes and accent marks. One needs a magnifying glass! The italics that are supposed to tell one which syllable of the words must be accented for correct pronounciation, again, are almost impossible to detect.

I used to speak pretty fluent Spanish when I was in high school, but with years of neglect and non-use, I've become a bit rusty. This book is a great refresher on key phrases and structure, and will fit in your pocket quite easily.
Don't expect to have a long, involved conversation using this book (only reason I gave this a 4), but if you're going on a trip, there are plenty of phrases to help you out in MANY types of situations. The scenarios in this book are QUITE comprehensive. I also have the Lonely Planet Japanese handbook which is also quite good.

This little book is packed with valuable information and advise when traveling in Mexico.I found the phrases useful and adequate. The book covers every thing from buying groceries to ending up in the Doctor's office. The size of the book is also a plus since it fits into small purses and fanny packs. In 06,I spent a month in Mexico going to village to village and found this book immensley helpful. Go for it!

My wife and I went to Mexico to get married and we are not Spanish speakers. This handy book is first class and here are the reasons why:-

The book is small enough to easily fit into a coat or shirt pocket.

It has drawings of common situations with arrows pointing at items in the drawing with the Mexican word highlighted (how much easier could they make it)

The sections in the book are colour coordinated according to the situations you may find yourself (reservations,dining,partying... etc. Flick to the section and then use the obvious sentences to converse around the subject.

Pronunciation and grammar are explained clearly at the start of the book and all the words in the book are laid out phonetically (the only way you are going to get this wrong is if you can't read)

In conclusion, a first class guide, when we showed the book to the locals in Mexico they wanted to know if they could buy it in Mexico as they didn't think they could. They loved the pictures and even chipped in to help with correct pronunciation if we went astray.

The Mexican slang in the book is spot on, the Mexicans couldn't believe that some of the words were in the book.

When I go back to Mexico this book will be in my pocket, don't leave home without it.

Reasonably good Mexican Spanish, TERRIBLE pronunciation guide.......2005-09-16

This handy new phrasebook is MUCH closer to the Mexican Spanish being spoken today than any other I have found. It's actually pretty good, BUT the pronunciation guide is very, very bad for anyone from the central/western US or western Canada. If you're from those areas and don't already have some idea of correct Spanish pronunciation, avoid this phrasebook.

I think the authors must have had some idea about this in advance, since they tell you, "Don't worry too much about pronunciation." That of course is totally wrong. Spanish is one of the world's almost perfectly phonetic languages and pronunciation is the MOST important thing about being understood.

This is an excellent phrase book, easy to carry, easy to read and broken into easy to find section. Combined with a short language program this book carried me across Thailand comfortably. I mentione the language program because the pronunciation is a bit tricky to break down phonetically, altho Lonely Planet does a great job of it. I have used lonely planet phrase books for all of Asia and Northern Africa, but I must admit I use Rick Steve's phrase books for European travel. Lonely Planet Guide Books are also very good, especially for the bargain traveler.

This book has several great features.
-It is small and easy to fit in a pocket, bag etc.
-It has the words written out in thai. Without hearing and practicing pronunciation I find it very hard to get the tones and accent right. When people give me a blank look I can just point. VERY helpful. Especially considering that Thai words written in the roman alphabet make no sense to Thai people.
-It covers all sorts of situations. Basic travel needs like getting around, buying things, to dealing with medical problems, and even to pick-up lines
-some of the situations are so absurd (in that the average person would know a lot more thai or be dealing with an english speaker before that would happen) that it makes a great conversation piece hanging around the hostel. "Oh, yeah, well I know how to say 'don't worry, it happens to lots of guys. Beat that!'

If you're not looking to actually learn thai, but just want some help getting around and trying not to be the Ugly American, then I recommend this book.

The best part about this book is the pronunciation guide. Thai can be tricky with all the tones, this book made it very simple to understand. If anything the sex and drug sections can just be for entertainment. I tried out these phrases just for fun, never seriously used them. Good for a laugh. Several Thai people have asked me to send them a copy.

This book has a section called "What's your poison" which gives translations for several illegal drugs. It also describes how to ask for a clean syringe. Drugs are illegal in Thailand, but this book helps to promote their use by providing these translations.

I picked up Conversational Brazilian Portuguese: Learn to Speak and Understand Portuguese with Pimsleur Language Programs (Simon & Schuster's Pimsleur), in audio and learned a lot. It helps to have some spanish lessons when you were young. This book was a nice addition to my base, and it came in handy more than a few times once I was in Brazil.

I just returned from a trip to Brazil, and though I know some Spanish, I had no previous exposure to Portuguese. This phrasebook proved invaluable in helping me bridge the gap, and contributed to me having an even better time, and blending in better with the locals.

Beware of serious pronunciation errors in this book. Although it was overall pretty useful, there were some glaring errors in areas where there likely shouldn't have been. Case in point, the phonetic pronunciation for tchau (goodbye) in the book is spelled out as "tee-show." At least in Bahia, it was pronounced by the locals just like the Italian "ciao." The word "vinte" (twenty) is spelled out "veeng-te" in the book, while again everyone we encountered in Bahia pronounced it "veen-chay." I don't know if these are regional differences in Brazilian Portuguese, but if so, they need to at least be addressed in the book. Take care when using the phrasebook to listen to the local speakers as well.

Best Brazilian Portuguese phrase book I've found!.......2006-03-03

I'm just a lonely writer wanna-be in the heart of the middle of nowhere, so what do I choose to write -- a period piece of Brazil. I can't even begin to praise this book enough. Not only do I get phrases and words, but there are all sorts of little historical and cultural details.

I will probably never travel to Brazil, but this little book is allowing my imagination to have a trip!

Excellent Book.......2007-04-14

I'm married to an Ethiopian and have found this book to be a lifesaver each and every time I go to Ethiopia. The book gets you close enough to the correct pronunciation that anyone can half way understand you and correct your pronunciation of the words. Although Tigrinyan's are now in power Amharic is still the national language of Ethiopia so it's better to learn Amharic if you plan on speaking to anyone in Ethiopia.

Actually I didn't use the book very much, as my surroundings were almost all English or Oromo-speaking. Before spending much time on a learning a language to use in Ethiopia, be sure to check out the location. Since the Amhara's are no longer the dominant tribe, their language may be less useful. Tigrayans are now in power and Oromo are the largest language group.

This book is excellent! I don't understand some of the reviews.
It is a rare book that promotes Ethiopia and its culture. It is intended for foreign travellers to Ethiopia and not for Ethiopians who live abroad. I have travelled to Ethiopia with this book and found it very useful. I don't know what I would have done without it. I found the cultural info very useful. I think no other phrasebook offers this kind of info.

This guide is terrible if your goal is to speak Amharic. The Achilles heel of this book is that there are no accent marks on the ethiopian phrases. If you read what is in the book there is no way you will come close to saying anything intelligible. On the positive side, all of my Ethiopian friends found this book very helpful for learning English.

Don't expect much from this. This is really more a waste of time than anything else. If you're travelling to Ethiopia, and you speak english, then you really don't have to worry. Many Ethiopians speak english, and many of the signs are in english/amharic.

Lonely Planet Egyptian Arabic.......2007-03-23

This is a very well thought out and nicely organized book. Any student of Egyptian Arabic will like this phrasebook, and the illustrations inside of the book offer casual entertainment while the reader continues to learn Egyptian Arabic. I admit that I was disappointed to read that the author started to include sexual words and phrases, then backed out of doing it. It really would have been a lot of fun to learn how to say some of those things that were deleted from the final text.

This book is outstanding! It gives you everything that you will need. One thing I would advise is to couple it with something audible because the Egyptian language is very particular in pronunciations. Most of their vowel sounds are quite a bit different from English. Just one slip of the tongue and you could be saying "I want to go to the bathroom" or "I want to eat pigeon"

I love this book!!! When in Egypt this June, I used it to my heart's content. Thanks to this book, I have learned very much in speaking the Arabic language. Being a student of Arabic, I found this small phrasebook even more efficient in teaching me than my textbook from school! It is simply awesome. Although the grammar could have been talked about more, I found this book a life-saver in many situations while being in North Africa. This book will teach you pronunciation, the Arabic alphabet, numbers, and thousands of useful phrases whilst in Egypt. The best Arabic-learning tool out there!

This is one of the most thorough, and easy to use Arabic phrasebooks I have ever used. Covers traveler's issues (tickets, directions, hotels, etc), but also includes food/eating, health/emergencies, entertainment, general conversation, and other everyday topics as well. I highly recommend this book for anyone who will be visiting or living in Arabic-speaking parts of the world. Great for students of Arabic as well.

This is not a Latin American Spanish course or a full dictionary as some seem to think it should be. It contains many useful words and phrases that are helpful for travellers and for those taking a comprehensive language course and want to be able to speak the language quickly. I found it quite helpful.

FOr most situations, you will find the exact phrase. For a more substantive discussions, the dictionary is weak-ish, but it will get you through. It's a useful accessory for any Latin American travel in case you're a total Spanish dumm, like me. :)

I thought this was basically alright. We liked DK much better, and found ourselves using it a lot more. DK was better at grammar and pronunciation as well. The layout was good and easy to follow (Lonely Planet). However, a word of caution,there is a whole social section of phrases that you will want to keep away from the kids! This is clearly an adults only phrase book!

A great, basic phrasebook.......2006-03-08

This book has worked out great for me. I bought it for my trip to the climbing area, El Potrero Chico, in Mexico. Lucky for me, English will get you by around the climbing area. However, when I wander into town, Spanish is a necessity. This book is by no means comprehensive, but it's great for a book that fits in your pocket. If I knew nothing about the language, it might not be enough. However, since I took Spanish 10 years ago in High School and remember the basics, it is perfect. I only have one small complaint...I know it is not meant as a 2-way dictionary, but it does have a small one with important words in it. I would prefer it if that section was larger.

3rd edition was better.......2004-01-10

I originally picked up the 3rd edition some time ago, and found it to be a wonderful reference. The layout was easy to follow, and the dictionary had most of the words that I would use in brief conversations. The grammar section also helped me pick up the lttle differences that seperated Spanish form Portuguese. Because it was so pratical and user friendly I decided to pick up a set of these books for a brief Spanish course I was going to teach. Unfortunately the 4th edition almost entirely left out any talk on grammar. While not much of an issue if the book is used exclusively as a phrasebook, it is extremely limiting in what this book can teach you. Lists of common verbs are absent. List of conjugations are also absent. Unbelievable! While the layout has improved, and the food dictionary is nice, I can't beleive they would voluntarily leave out any discussion of verb conjugation! For this reason I really can't recommend buying this book. Look for the 3rd edition. The breif information on grammar there makes the two books worlds apart in how far they will take you in picking up the language.

Poorly organized and not very handy.......2006-03-17

If your looking for an easy-reference, traveler's phrasebook...this certainly isnt for you. Buying this as a quick-reference guide to help me get through Korea for 2 weeks, I was rather dissapointed that all the phrases are kind of scattered throughout the book, while the whole first half is dedicated to grammar. If I wanted to actually learn the language, I'd have bought a text book, not a "phrase" book. At any rate, the organization of the book certainly made it hard to find what I was looking for when I needed it. And, while everything else is over descriptive, theres a very frustratingly small amount of info on numbers. They go into a lot of depth about the etimology of the numbers, but say only a few word on when to use what(i.e. these numbers are used over 100....well, how do I say 11,225...do I use all "Sino-korean" or do I mix in "Pure Korean">) In a country whose currency is set up such that few things cost lower than 1,000 won, a bit more explanation on numbers over 100 would be appreciated...and the "Quick Reference" number guide on the inside-back cover, since it only goes up to 100, is entirely worthless. Oh well, I guess I should've know since it's Lonely Planet.

While this title is not mainly a Korean /language/ title, or a book one expects to learn in depth language nicities, nonetheless, the book does an amazing job of condensing these minutiae very quickly, accurately, and somewhat completely (at a begginer level of course), in very clear language, without any weird linguist smarty pants fancy grammar jargon.

This is the intro. The rest of the book follows the content and layout of similar titles, and is fairly useful for the beginner.

Could do better.......2004-03-01

The Lonely Planet(LP) Korean phrase book contains all the things you would expect from it. Unlike other phrase books the LP book has a great introduction to the language with a brief but useful grammar section. LP phrase books always seem to be much more than just a phrase book.

However the grammar section only contains the romanisation of Korean rather than using the Korean script, Hangul. I think this would be a simple but very effective addition to the book.

PINYIN IS BACK IN 6TH ED.......2007-05-25

Please note that the product sold on this page is the 6th edition September 2006. This edition marks REINTRODUCTION OF PINYIN.
Best phrasebook on the market though not perfect. Issues with format, not really with content.
Front grammar section is useful, but compartmentalized format in relatively newer editions makes it harder to follow. Questionable advice claims no tones are more understandable than bad tones.
Very thorough coverage of situations, including those never encountered (e.g. drugs, expressing interest in indigenous issues). As a 5 years student of Mandarin, I find the phrases accurate if sometimes stilted, but colloquial expressions given are still current.
I only wish the color coded category tabs were more effectively used. It is hard to find phrases quickly, as it is hard to find specific situations within the five categories of tools, practical, social, food, safe travel, and dictionary.
Anyhow, I will take this book along on upcoming trip to Beijing. (Have studied mostly modern literature and newspaper in Chinese, still don't know word for can opener!)

I think for the tourist, this phrasebook is invaluable. Honestly, in 2 weeks I wasn't going to learn to write or speak Chinese well enough to hold a conversation. I used this book as a rudimentary way of communicating, by looking up phrases or words, then pointing to the characters. It really helped me in quite a few different situations. Also made a nice conversation piece on a long distance train ride--the staff were looking up words and trying their English! I can see how this would be useless if you are trying to navigate street signs, or learn to speak the language. But for a tourist who will be in and out of the country, I thought it was great!

So I'm out 7 bucks. I don't plan on learning any pinyin. I would just be satisfied with pronouncing some nouns and basic phrases. The pronunciation system they have in the rough guide seems closer and the food section is much more complete. In LP, they don't seem to be in tune with the culture and many of the phrases are not useful - are you going ask in a chinese restaurant if it is "free of animal produce", "free range", "genetically modified", "gluten free"?

The abandonment of Pinyin was a devastating mistake. The new edition is useless for learning Chinese or speaking it. I have purchased at least six of the older editions. They will be much sought after now!

No Pinyin AND language errors!.......2006-08-25

I am usually a big fan of Lonely Planet products but this little book really let me down. I've studied Mandarin for a few years. A book like this should be useful in that a traveler should be able to use it quickly and easily. Unfortunately the move away from "pinyin" to LP's own crazy system is irrational. It is neither intuitive nor useful. My other grievance lies with the book's numerous language errors. If a traveler has problems pronouncing something, he or she should be able to point out the sentence to a fluent speaker. With this book though, you could very well be asking the wrong question. Sometimes the Chinese characters, English translations, or the LP symbols do not match up. Lonely Planet needs to make some adjustments with their next edition if it's going to have any success.

I agree with most of the other reviewers: Crowded House were massively underrated. The critics were fond of their albums at the time, and in the years since Neil Finn has been acknowledged of one of the master songwriters of his generation. Still, outside of their home turf of Australia and New Zealand, few people are familiar with the name Crowded House. Play them "Don't Dream It's Over," their brilliant 1987 chart-topper, and you'll probably get a vague, "Ohhh, they did *that* song." This is simply a shame.

Almost every band purported to be the Next Big Thing eventually gets compared to The Beatles, whether it's Duran Duran or The Strokes, and it's usually quite a stretch in any number of ways. Not so with Crowded House. In superficial aesthetics the two bands share a lot in common: the Rubber Soul-like harmonies that adorn their album Woodface; the driving, melodic basslines of Nick Seymour (much like Paul McCartney); Paul Hester's non-technical, but undeniably toe-tapping drumming; and Neil Finn's voice, which can break into Lennon-esque, hoarse rock shout, or have a soothing clarinet quality like McCartney.

But the songwriting is where the comparison is most apt. The Beatles' best songs seem almost inevitable and cosmic: *somebody* was bound to happen upon a melody this perfect eventually (as in "Yesterday"), and for some reason Lennon and McCartney were able to pluck such songs out of the air regularly. Neil Finn did the same, several times for each album, with Crowded House. Listen to "Four Seasons In One Day" just once, and you'll hear what I mean.

With this album, all these songs are collected in one place. I can't say how essential this disc is for anyone who appreciates outstanding pop songwriting that goes beyond catchy and crafted and into the realm of something deep and transcendent. The first 10 listens you'll be enjoying the melodies, energy and fantastic production; after that, you'll feel like you've found a new musical best friend. It's that good.

An entire CD that is very easy to listen to........2007-01-13

This CD plays like an easy listening extravaganza. Every song is mellow and classic. The band is apparently from New Zealand/Australia, which may explain the subtle brit pop undertones.. not to mention the McCartney-esque style of a few tracks. Overall this CD is a great buy, you won't be disappointed.
