Shhh! Don't interrupt!.......2007-07-12

My new favorite album...coming from a lover of soul, gospel, and R&B. I first heard "I Exalt Thee" on yahoo's music player like a year ago and finally got around to buying the album two weeks ago. I can listen to this any time, but this is perfect for bringing in the Sabbath on a meditative note. I love it! (When's the next one coming out?)

You'll Breathe Some Fresh Air Here.......2005-09-06

Six months ago I heard "Spirit of the Living God" played on a WEB site I subscribe to. I was struck forcefully at heart level
and brought to tears. In a week I had this album and it has its place on my "Favorites" shelf which is reserved for the top 20 CDs in my collection of over 300. It gets played several times a week and I never tire of it, in fact, seven of the sixteen songs on the disc are so good that they are permanently programmed into the sequencing of my player's memory bank so that when I want to meditate and worship in my own personal quiet time, they are there. It's like going to church for me.
If you love those seven which are slow and meditative, you will at least like three others that are beautiful as well. In these you will experience no more than a short section in each where the musicians allow themselves liberty enough to put in some extra riffs and go for a few musical phrases that add some spice. That leaves four more songs which are most joyous and full. If you appreciate jazz that lingers around a bigger combo sound and is more than mood music, there is something here for you too. Seldom can one album of music satisfy every soul perfectly, but I can say that this album was put together well, with some old songs and some that I have not heard, but did love nonetheless. I feel that most listeners will sense that the producer has hit the target. You will breathe much easier after you are blessed by the worshipful jazz praise that this CD offers.

Breathe Slow, Breathe Faster.......2005-09-06

I heard one song off this CD on a subscription WEB site six months ago and I immediately bought the CD hoping it would bring me in its entirety to that same state of worshipful meditation I had enjoyed after my first exposure to the one song. It has brought me much joy and is on my shelf under the heading "All Time Best" and it gets played several times a week. If it isn't soft enough for your meditation time, perhaps you need straight new age or something more anemic in the realm of elevator music.
Out of the 16 songs on this disc, there were 7 which are gorgeous renditions that are perfect for my early morning quiet times. Another three are more uptempo with short sections that are a little showy and not as meditative, but only sections, not the entire selection. If you are a musician, and like to explore a bit and savor a bigger sound with more of a jazz feel, you have four good numbers to listen to with the volume up and the tempo too. There's definitely something in the great acoustics for everyone here, and when you have finished listening to this CD you are going to start searching for another disc to buy that has the same blessed nature, perhaps produced by the same people who seem to have a feel for what it takes to make people glad in the Lord and warmed by the Spirit.

Meditation???????.......2005-02-12

I bought this cd because of the 5 star reviews it received (I'm a huge fan of the reviews on Amazon). I really wanted a quiet, inspirational cd to help quiet my mind before God. The title of this cd led me to believe that the music would be conducive to meditation. It was loud at times, and fast. Not that I'm anti-rock or anti-jazz or any such thing, but "Instrumental Meditation" to me means a harp, an acoustic guitar, or maybe a piano or a flute. It didn't even occur to me that it might be a synthesizer and a drum machine, along with an electric guitar and a soprano sax.
Aside from the "meditation" business, there were some parts of the cd that I thought were very good, musically speaking. But most were just mediocre. I was very disappointed. Anyone know any good harp cd's????

I was looking for soothing music to take to the hospital when I have my baby. My idea of soothing is something a little more progressive than most I suppose and this was perfect! It's a great combination of tribal music with some nice electronica twists, right up my alley. Not the put-you-to-sleep new age blah I kept finding. On the same strand as Sub Zero but quieter.

When I first played this CD, I thought it would just be another one to add to my "one play wonders" shelf. You know the shelf I mean. The one full of CD's that you bought without really listening to them, only to realize that you actually would rather break them over your knee than listen to them again, but you just paid 17.00 for it so you show restraint.
Surprisingly, this CD has now moved to my top shelf. This is now my favorite CD. The chants are haunting. The drum beats and dance tracks get into your bones and the music awakens something in your soul. I play it every chance I get and everyone who hears it comments on how unique the music is. If you don't like it the first couple of times, don't give up. I promise you, this one is a keeper!

How to describe this CD?

Cool, yet sexy. Diverse, yet universal. Tribal, yet not unsophisticated. Spiritual, yet earthy.

I don't know about the sacred sex thing another reviewer mentioned (although I'm certainly willing to give it a try) but I found the bonus CD, "Deeper" to be both beautiful to listen to and somehow....clarifying.

This CD is worth exploring on your own, because whatever it is, it will be different to each person.

I'd like to see more from these artists.

Soulfood offers an excellent set of music by which to move energy from the root of one's being to the universal life force and loops back into one's being. I find Breathe excellent for sexual communion with a sacred lover. It moves energy more than any other music I have experienced for the form of breathwork I practice in sacred sexuality. This music brings me to soulful ecstasy. Thanks.

Meant to be listened to with an open mind and an open heart, this is rewarding music with a singular theme...unity of mind, body, and spirit. At times transcendental and other times dancefloor-hypnotic, Soulfood is aptly named. Maybe not the best thing for your next party, but certainly the best thing for the next rainy night when all you want to do is stare out the window. Or the next sunny day when all you want to do is bask in the glory of a beautiful day.

Nicholas Gunn has worked with global rhythms for most of his career, using them as a launching pad for exhilarating flute melodies. On Breathe, he ventures into Latin and Afro-Cuban grooves, crafting his finest album to date. Instead, the focus is on the groove, constructed from a smorgasbord of hand-percussion, flute, keyboards, and vocals--all provided by Gunn himself. Nicholas Gunn picks up where he left off in "journey to yellow stone". This time round, Gunn takes a more experimental approach with a whole new sound-scape. Slightly more exotic with a dice of easten flavor. Having his past 6 albums, I can see that Gunn's musical vibe have been slowly evolving. This multi-instrumentalist has proven that he is a master of his craft.
Truly inspiring and powerful. An album that will bring you into a greater height of serenity.

Mystical Musical Experience!.......2004-11-23

It has been raining here for three weeks straight but I am literally transported to another time and place when I hit play and breathe in the elements that explode out of Nicholas Gunn's latest masterpiece! Being a yoga teacher I plan to share this imaginative and innovative new music with my students to take them out of their everyday enviroment and introduce them to the exotic lush locations in their mind. The album is a wonderful balance of upbeat latin music that makes you want to move and then sends you down a waterfall to a tranquil place that washes over you and leaves you refreshed!

I absolutely love this CD. All of the songs are so beautifully orchestrated and so infused with passion. Nicholas Gunn is such a talented performer, his depth and range really show through on this CD. "Breathe" is passionate, uplifting and great to listen to day or night, and you can even dance to it. I highly recommend it.

It's hard for me to put into words my obsession for this CD =) In the last year I have been through a lot, including a seperation and difficult move, and Breathe is the only thing that has brought me peace and let me sleep at night. I was introduced to the music of Nicholas Gunn by a friend of mine who owns all of the park music, and she somehow knew it was what I needed. I'm so thankful that she did! This CD brings me a kind of rebirth experience, and it was very well thought out and crafted. The songs carry me up and motivate me to live each day to its fullest. I am already waiting for Nicholas's next album with great anticipation.
