Customer Reviews:

1 out of 5 stars Confusing and boring at the same time!.......2005-04-27

The whole idea of a guide book is to "guide" you--to tell you how to do things, where to find things and how to get there. This book does none of these things!

Instead it is a pretentious and disorganized mess that leaves one with the feeling that, while the author obviously knows Sydney well, she is far too smug and self-congratulatory to share much of this information with you!

Yes there are maps--but they omit many street names and don't match up with each other. Good luck if the location you are looking for is on a street not deemed worthy of inclusion or if your path takes you from one neighborhood to another.

The book does provide spotty information on the city's transit systems (light rail, heavy rail, buses, mono-rail and ferries) but not enough to enable one to get around easily. Plan on spending extra time getting oriented and standing in line at information booths.

As far as culture, history, nature and local color--if it doesn't have to do with drag queen reviews, liberal politics or the hippest place to eat or drink, the author doesn't seem to be much interested.

Finally, the index-or should I say indexes as there are (strangely) several different ones! You'll probably just have to memorize page numbers as I did!

I spent four days in Sydney getting more and more frustrated with this book before I dumped it and started using "Sydney: The Official Guide" which is given out free by the local tourist authority. It was much more informative and much more user-friendly!

BTW--Lonely Planets has apparently decided to get rid of those sections of its city guides on getting there, transportation, local money, culture, customs, tips, etc., (which were always the most useful parts of the books) and has replaced these with expanded listings of recommended restaurants, bars and coffee shops. I did take a few of their recommendations in Sydney--and was uniformly disappointed.

One good thing about the book-if you are awake due to jet-lag, a few pages of the ponderous prose may help you nod off!

This was the 14th Lonely Planet Guide that I have purchased over the years--and the last. This is a once-great travel series that has completely lost its way. Too bad!

1 out of 5 stars Lonely Planet falls flat on a great city.......2004-10-16

Having never been to Sydney before, we stopped into a Dymock's to pick up a copy of what we thought would be the premier guidebook for Sydney, boy were we wrong! Lonely Planet should do Australia right as they are located there, but they miss the boat in this edition.

The maps were the most useful part of this book.

The index was horrible. It is split up into 4 separate indexes - which if you miss the first page and the small type at the top telling you so, you can't find anything in the index. For example - looking for the zoo - not knowing the name of it - look under "zoo" - but nothing is there. Because there are 4 "z " entries in the book. Until you find the right page of "z" only to then have you see "Taranga Zoo".

More than this, It lacks detail on almost every area. Just one example, Jenolan Caves. It tells you guided tours exist bit nothing more about them. Like which one to see if you only can see one or two or mention that fact that there are many stairs in the caves, etc. etc. So many other places are covered in the same manner. In fact they even say in the book that they don't know if something is fun or not - example: Sydney Jet - we took this tour and one like it in New Zealand.... NZ was much better of course, but our son had not been. The author comment was, " who knows if you'll actually manage to see anything in all that excitement, but it sounds like fun. " Obviously, she has not done the tour.

If you don't know your way around the area, you will find yourself constantly flipping around the book looking for information.

This book gave very few insider tips or really any useful information on the many places to eat. Since most people stay around Darling Harbor - they only chose to put in 9 places in that area!

The photos were very hokey and the good ones were very small Black & White which never shows anything well. The rest of it looked like a marketing advertisement for Sydney Tourism.

On top of all this - it was incredibly out of date for a 2004 edition. Many places had closed or prices were dramatically higher than listed. We looked for a major department store listed in the book, only to find it had changed to a MYERS years and years ago! Come on, LP!

Basically, Lonely Planet has not changed their take on guidebooks over the years and this one does not do justice to a great city.

4 out of 5 stars Go for it.......2002-02-16

Invaluable, this is the kind of book you'd want even if you lived in Sydney. It explains the different character of Sydney's neighborhoods and gives concise intelligent explanations of how Sydney has become the muti-faceted city it is. I've only been to Sydney twice, but with the help of this guide I'm beginning to get it. The maps are pretty good, but some lack detail. Hotel and restaurant sections are comprehensive, and in my experience extremely accurate.

4 out of 5 stars Excellent overview of the beautiful city.......2001-01-09

This is an excellent guidebook for Yanks and others who want to learn more about the Harbour City. With 4 million people, Sydney is almost too big to cover in a single volume, but the editors of this fine book do their best. The descriptions of hotels and restaurants are usefully broken down by neighborhood - and Sydney is even more diverse than most cities; the reader who is planning a trip will want to decide where he or she is going to stay before making any other decisions. The maps are superb. The city has changed almost beyond recognition in recent years, and an up-to-date guidebook is a must for the serious traveller. Highly recommended.

Customer Reviews:

1 out of 5 stars Unnecessary map for sydney?.......2007-02-09

This map is a fine map, but level of details is not better than the massive amount of free maps which is handed out at hotels in Sydney. My point is why pay for a map that you actually can get for free!

4 out of 5 stars uniquely handy.......2006-04-20

I disagree with the previous reviewer. While you can certainly find all the maps provided in a tourist brochure or travel book, this brochure offers something they can't. This brochure is laminated. So, you can pull it out and toss it into your bag many times without damage. Additionally, this brochure is a nice size. Even when fully expanded it is still a manageable size. So, while you'll still look like a tourist staring at a map, you won't be a tourist with a large, unwieldy map or a big fat book.
I agree the price is a bit much. But, if you like the convenience of this format, the price tag may be worth it for you.

1 out of 5 stars Disappointing.......2002-05-01

The content is not worth the price. You will get the same information from any tourist brochure for free.

I go to Melbourne fairly regularly for business (from Sydney). I am looking for some interesting things to do and this book meets that need. It is comprehensive, and in a plus for Lonely Planet, the maps are good. Real street maps, not out of scale, sketch maps.

I am taking the family there for a holiday soon and this book will be invaluable.

1 out of 5 stars THIS BOOK IS JUST PLAIN WRONG!.......2007-06-18

I went to Mongolia twice in the past year, and I live with a Mongolian woman full time who is a well educated journalist. If one had to rely on this book, one would be in serious trouble. First off, the phrase "sain bainuu?" which is used as "hello", if you pronounced it the way this book says, you would be way off, and no one would be able to understand you. I hear the phrase every day, spoken by native Mongolians, and it sounds more like "sen benno". The book says to say "sayn baynoo". What's up with that? And then the pronunciations for the Mongolian cyrillic that it gives are not correct. So you'd be trying to read something and thinking you were smart with your little book, and when you tried to say it, you'd never be right. So as far as translating a few basic, written words, this book could be helpful. But don't attempt to pronounce anything the way they have it written. I can't believe this is the "best" book out there on this subject! They need to rewrite the pronunciation section with the supervision of an actual Mongolian speaker!

4 out of 5 stars Small size needs small expectations... I suppose.......2006-02-22

This little phrasebook is not too bad... however, in some of the places cyrillic text is missing (can be good to have).
Missing some of very basic words as for example "head", "face" and others.
Missing also some shorter explanation about the persian script that was used mostly before, but in lot of places even today.

But again... if you have no clue at all about Mongolian language, this little book is pretty good to have.

            5 out of 5 stars Very coprehensive.......2003-02-10

Lonely Planet always publishes great phrasebooks, and this one's no different. Luckily, they provide the original cyrillic script alongside of the phonetic transcriptions, so you can actually read things while inside the country (unlike their Central Asian phrasebook, which was entirely in phonetic transcription). I haven't been to Mongolia yet, but this book is definatly coming with me when I go! Its content is very similar to their Russian phrasebook, which I found extremely useful while in Russia.

5 out of 5 stars Traveller Tested and Approved.......2001-12-13

I took this phrase book to Mongolia with me in the summer of 2001 and foud it to be extremely helpful. While there is a phrase section in Lonely Planet's main book on Mongolia (which I HIGHLY recommend as an essential if travelling to Mongolia), this book was much more comprehensive. I found it very useful when trying to communicate with our non-english speaking driver when out in the middle of the Gobi desert. Even if you are unable to pronounce the words correctly, you can at least show whoever you're trying to communicate with the word you are trying to say. Mongolia is a travel experience far different from anywhere else in the world. Communication is a vital part of making that experience more enriching. For that, I recommend this phrase book.

5 out of 5 stars Best Guide to Mongolian Language.......2000-10-06

Wherever you travel in the world, the Lonely Planet guides are the most helpful, the most lucid, and the most fun to read. After struggling with Mongolian-English dictionaries, this book was a breath of fresh air. Their phonetic transcriptions of the Cyrillic are by far the easiest and least technical that I've found. And on top of that it is convenient and pocket-sized!

Music is performed in its original settings. Beautiful choral work; four singers, two of each gender. Lacks the histrionical egotism found in so many Irish ballad recordings. Very much worth it.

5 out of 5 stars An Excellent Guidebook.......2003-02-27

I practically wore this book out during my 2 week trek through "The Top End" - Darwin, Litchfield, Katherine and Kakadu. It was extermely helpful in deciding where to go, what to see, and where to stay. All the supplemental reading was very useful and entertaining as well. Go Lonely Planet!!

4 out of 5 stars Good, but not as good as some other LP guides.......2000-09-24

The Northern Territory of Australia is one of the world's most facscinating places to visit. Kakadu and Litchfield are superb national parks with stunning landscapes and further south things like Devil's Marbles and Ayers Rock are breathtaking. Of course, the whole journey of about 2500 miles from Darwin to Alice Springs along the Stuart Highway is an adventure.

The LP guide gives a lot of good tips on where to stay and what to see. The information, as usual, is accurate and certainly helps to get around. It contains a lot of interesting "extra" information on things like Aboriginal Art etc.

However, the book misses out on quite a few things which you can see and do in the parks and villages you visit like e.g. the gold digger in Pine Creek who for the "gold museum" in Pine Creek where we could "find" our own gold.

The best thing is to take a couple of books. During the long ride there is plenty of time to read. The LP guide is not an appetite wetter, but it is a very good tool for planning your trip and should not be missed out.

              Lonely Planet Books

Lonely Planet Books d. I wanted to play it, but nothing worked. But I could tell, however, that the instrument was one of very high quality - a German Sperrhake-Passau (made by Sperrhake in Passau, Germany). 8 feet long, two manuals, three ranks, two lute stops, and four pedals to operate the ranks and coupling. And heavy! The type of harpsichord preferred by the late conductor Herbert von Karajan for so many of his concerts and recordings. It would need careful attention, but I purchased it, knowing that my friend and colleague, Dwight Thomas, would be able to restore it. He concurred. He had to re-quill it and almost completely renovate the instrument. When finished, he had to teach me to tune it! (But that's another, very long story!) Now it's wonderful. A joy to play, and a thrill to hear.

And its history? It was given by the English actor, Richard Harris, as a gift to songwriter Jimmy Webb. (Hence the harpsichord's moniker, “Lord Richard”.) An avid member of the Jimmy Webb fan club, Dan Minicus bought the instrument from Jimmy about 15 years ago. Jimmy had used it in New York during the period when he was writing MacArthur Park. Legend has it that he drank tea a lot, and often placed his teapot and cup on the harpsichord. The tell-tale rings are still there. “Jimmy, if you hear this CD, I hope you enjoy hearing your harpsichord.” And Dan - “thanks for the Grand Canyon phone call.”
