Excerpts from an interview with Paul Helfrich on his new CD: Mindscapes (By Wildfire Media, March 11, 2003)

WM: So let's begin with Mindscapes. What are they and how did you come up with the idea?

PH: When I studied music back in the 1970s and early 80s, I explored something I called soundscapes - music that was very abstract and didn't really tell a story. But I always knew that my music was full of emotions and feelings, too. And all along I had been studying the work of Jane Roberts and the Seth material, which promoted a cornerstone New Age idea: we each create our own realities.

So Mindscapes were born when it finally dawned on me that we each create our own personalized soundscapes regardless of what "the composer" intends. Mindscapes honor the listener since they are the ones who ultimately bring meaning to the music. Since each person uses his or her own filters, he or she will create something unique, regardless of what I may intend.

WM: So these Mindscapes are tuned to resonate with certain belief filters?

PH: Exactly. Sort of like an ever-unfolding, spiraling human chord. But no two people will resonate in precisely the same way.

WM: These are all instrumental pieces, yes?

PH: Yes, it's the kind of music that works as background "while you work" music, or crank-it-up-loud music, or even headphone music.

I have been using this music loop for meditation for six years now, and it continues to be amazing in its ability to both settle and open me, regardless of my state of mind when I begin.

So! You think you are ready for the type of music that takes you really inside the place where no one else can go? Well, "Grab your things I'm going to take you home"--to quote Peter Gabriel from the classic--"Solsbury Hill".

Mars has found an incredible loop of music that truly allows you to visit the best part of your inner being whilst allowing for nuances that creep up on you through out the 75 minutes of beguiling melody. When you want to reach for something that provides for a respite from the daily stress and trauma of business and personal relationships that don't measure up--well, it's all contained herein.

Mars Lasar's Mindscapes........2007-05-09

I first heard this series on XM Radio's Audio Visions, and e-mailed XM to find out how to get these. After getting all three disks, I'd say if you like 'ambient' new age type music give it a try.
I did what XM does and took it down from the hour long average CD to about twenty minute cuts. Still good, just a little less length. As I'm only doing this one review for all three CD's, I'll say that I like disk three "Satin Skies", best. But they are all good, and I'm sure someone else likes this CD or the second CD better, but that's the thing about music right? Enjoy it!

chakra effect.......2005-02-02

I listened to this at a friend's house with headphones and was amazed at how each track had an effect on a specific chakra. Tracks 2-4 made my heart chakra tingle, the 5th track opened up my crown chakra, listening to the 6th track caused electrical charges in my throat chakra. I don't know if I'll have the same experience again but it impressed me so much that I'm buying a copy for myself!

13 track CD album ------------- It always begins because of a girl. In Matthew Fagans case, it is no different. I was 19 and I had just broken up with a girl and I wanted to immerse myself in something, so I picked up a guitar. Since then, Fagan has become dedicated to learning and playing the guitar. I took some lessons on and off, but then I gave up on formal training. He is mostly self-taught, having learned a lot by playing along with some of his favorite records. Now Fagan is working on producing his third album, having evolved far past playing others music, and has come to find a style uniquely his own. Fagan plays what is called finger-style guitar and writes most of his own music. Although he was originally planning on attending San Diego State to study music, he never actually entered the program. I got married in 1984 and moved to California and my wife encouraged me to be more practical with my lifestyle, he said. For the past five years Fagan has worked as a planning consultant, but that is just what he describes as his day job. His heart lies within his music. His previous two CDs included only one or two songs covered from other artists. When I do covers Im very selective and make sure its something that fits my style and the guitar, he said. Both CDs were produced in Temecula. The first one, [Mindscapes], took me 41 years, and the second one took about three. The second CD, entitled Tuckerman Lane, sends a strong message about Fagans talents. The songs Fagan has composed flow beautifully together, and hearing the way he plays will make the listener doubt he was never trained.

Inside My Mind's Eye winds through complex emotional and psychological territory—from escape and alienation to meditation and personal redemption, from anxiety and self-doubt to hope and self-renewal. The title song serves as the central piece of this artful puzzle. Haptonstahl tackles his creative demons while trying to stay connected to those he loves, and to the cosmic forces in his mind. The twelve songs of Inside My Mind's Eye represent a wide sonic spectrum, yet form an organic whole to match with the CD's theme. The music includes a mesmerizing blend of acoustic and electric guitars. Haptonstahl's voice is at once strong and clear, then pensive and earnest. He supports the songs with a broad palette of percussion, lyrical bass lines, and inspired psychedelic effects.

Seven instrumental tracks are featured, including three solo acoustic finger-style compositions, and mixtures of intricately arranged 6-and 12-string guitars, electric guitar, bass, mellotron and eerie soundscapes. Haptonstahl's five vocal tunes are richly layered ensemble pieces, featuring stirring melodies, transcendent harmonies and glistening guitar solos.

The CD is family artistic affair. Haptonstahl's 16-year-old daughter Julia provides accomplished accompaniment on bass for two songs. His brother Max's mind-bending intaglio print serves as the CD artwork. Surreal images interspersed throughout the CD package match the mood of the music.

Take a Trip Inside His Mind's Eye.......2006-02-09

What a trip inside Jim Haptonstahl's Mind's Eye! He brings the listener a sense of harmony mixed with edginess, with side-trips into the subconscious. Fine fingerstyle guitar work on the instrumentals, but also a deft touch with the muted attack on electric guitar, creating flute-like tones in counterpoint lines. Evokes everything from John Renbourn to Jimmie Spheeris to Steve Hackett. But Haptonstahl also stakes a claim to a new and original voice: poetic musings within a dense thicket of reality, with some magic and heart thrown in for good measure.

Sunt Lacrimae Rerum - "There are tears of things".......2005-01-03

This CD album delivers on the promise of its title and the surreal skies of the cover art: introspective but airy, flowing through many complex moods and colors - and stretches of wonderful passion. Tinted with a dark sadness throughout, but always believing in, and hoping for, something wonderful at the root of nature.

First the bad news - the title song was a comparative thud measured against the emotionally driven palette of the rest of the offerings. Plodding in composition and delivery, as though JimHap was taking an emotional breather.

That said, after putting the disk in the player the first time, I played the tracks repeatedly throughout the evening and into the morning... and the next evening. JimHap puts his fingers to the frets in search of beauty, and finds it. His riffs are reminiscent of many influences, from Frank Zappa to Pat Metheny, David Crosby, Leo Kottke, Will Ackerman and, well, Joni Mitchell among others.

I'm familiar with JimHap's work from previous decades, and there's clearly an evolving maturity in his instrumental technique. The voice of the golden youth has acquired an understated quality well suited to the aging child.

This work being vocally a solo effort, I think JimHap would benefit from some help on the harmonies. His backup voice tracks seem to falter sometimes, as though he's worn out from all the emoting on the lead tracks. Get yourself some compatible but contrasting singing voices behind you on the next one, Jimmy! Anyway, I recommend you get this CD. And be prepared to spend some quality time with it!
