This compilation of music by Dvorak played by Yo-Yo Ma is just beautiful. Ma seems to understand just when Dvorak wants to be super-Romantic and sappy and when he is in fact being merely his usual expressive self. The former comes into bloom with the Slavonic Dance, in which he's accompanied by Itzhak Perlman and "Songs My Mother Taught Me," with Patricia Zander at the piano. But when it comes to revealing Dvorak as one of the most insightful and truly passionate of composers, with a particular understanding of the cello, Ma's playing of the B minor Concerto (under Kurt Masur, with the New York Philharmonic), the latter description comes into play. Ma gets every nuance out of the cello, and the way in which Masur, for instance, leads the winds against the cello at the start of the 2nd movement is just gorgeous. "Klid" ("Silent Woods") is given a deeply affecting reading as well, under Seiji Ozawa. 2004 is the 100th anniversary of Dvorak's death; this CD is fine tribute. --Robert Levine
Customer Reviews:
Yo-Yo Ma is a genius .......2004-11-16
words fail me on how to describe performance in this CD.It's very good, one of the best interpretations I have heard in a very long time. I must confess that since i discovered Ma du Pre I have not been able to listen to anything else nor did I attempt to do so. But out of the blue I bumped into this CD by chance & after hearing Yo Yo Ma's phraising especially the 1st movement infact the whole of Dvorak Cello was like something new to me.Ma plays with passion, emotions & strong commitment to the music in a different way.The Ochestra is in top form & allows the solo cello to shine at the right time.I never thought there is another interpretation that could surpass M.Rostropovich(Im sorry to say this I know he is a living legend & the 1969 record with Karajan is held in high esteem). Ma is accompanied by my favourate violinist Itzhak Perlman on "Humosresque no.7 for piano" & "Slavonic Dance no.10 in E minor"- the results are so sweet as many people know Perlman is a romantic specialist his tone with Ma's cello is heavenly. With regard to the "songs my mother taught me" the cello sounds good not best for the track personally im so used to hear the song being played on violin. There's nothing wrong with the cello it's just that it 's tone is a bit too strong for the composition but it's very well interpreted by Ma. They call this transcription in musical terms. Actually Ma deserves an apology as im one of those who have accused him of lacking in emotions &"look at me now i can play anything" attitude.I think those allegations are baseless & unwarranted when u hear this CD u will know u are into something beautiful. Overall grab this very fast before many people realise Yo-Yo Ma 's greatest gift of song.

Customer Reviews:
Cello for relaxation.......2007-08-02
I really enjoy this CD. I go to sleep with it playing almost every night.
soothing.......2007-05-28
It's not a bad CD, although I believe there has got to be a better rendition of The Swan somewhere out there. The problem with this version is that the piano overwhelms the cello playing.
The rest of the CD is pretty nice and relaxing. Worth what I paid for it.
great gift idea.......2007-01-13
My wife is a lover of a good cello, so when I gave her this disc for Christmas, she loved it!
Everyday Cello.......2004-03-23
I bought this CD solely based on the fact that I love the cello. I do not pretend to know classical music - I buy what I like to hear, and this CD exceeded my expectations. It is such a pleasure to listen to this disk; it is soothing and every track is worth it!
75 minutes of meditative music.......2001-12-13
The cello is almost always the instrument I turn to for relaxation. It meditates upon a deeper, slower spectrum of emotion than say, a harp or violin.
I put this CD to the ultimate test and took it to the hospital with me, to see if its music could counteract the threat and ultimate deployment of needles---and it was indeed much less painful to be poked while in a state of relaxation, as induced by these (mainly 19th century) compositions.
My two favorite selections from "Cello for Relaxation" are Camille Saint-Saëns' "The Swan" from "Carnival of the Animals," and John Tavener's "Chant," which is an unaccompanied melody, "without barlines or meter, shaped as a palindrome." Steven Isserles performs as the cello soloist for both of these compositions.
In my continuing search for relaxation music, this CD now rates as number one. Its music was selected with a sensitivity to dynamics, and beautiful, adagio playing. Its musicality is superb and unobtrusively displayed, and allows the listener to meditate, or relax into much-needed sleep.

Customer Reviews:
Hear Her Live.......2006-12-19
You must witness Alisa Weilerstein live. I fell in love with her playing at the Spoleto festival where she played the basso continuo part of a Bach Brandenberg Concerto as if it was the Dvorak Cello Concerto. She has a passion for music that i have not heard or seen. And in her early 20s. Oh my gosh what a performer she will eventually be!
Weilerstein Debut.......2006-01-21
I've been playing the cello for almost 40 years and I agree about the complaints about the vibrato and phrasing: overdone! I also agree with the question about "aristocratic" playing: why all of the exaggeration? Instrument playing should ideally be like that of a vocalist, where one is not limited by one's technical abilities. I doubt that Ms. Weilerstein would sing these phrasese the same way she plays them. There is still time for her to develop, however. If you want to hear more refined playing, listen to Gendron, Rose, Fournier or Rostropovich.
powefull.......2005-12-18
I am a cellist of 15 years on the breakthrough of becoming a renowed cellist. This cellist tone is so powerfull and clear.she tells a story this is so clear to understand because the music speaks. alisa should watch the slurs from the f to b and be more gracefull. The apres un reve was ok i guess. she really should of tooken more time. like floating on a dream cloud. when i play this piece i take the music from the begining as a fuzzy dream and play the pitch so the music tells a story and becomes more clear every measure. The elgar is somenthing she might not want to touch because no one plays it better than du pre.
Florida Music Lover.......2002-10-12
I have been fond of the cello for years. I have enjoyed Casals even though he was somewhate austere. I love Rostropovich's tone and color but have felt that no one has ever played with the passion of Du Pre until I heard Weilerstein on, I believe, NPR when they played an unreleased tape of the Elgar Concerto by Weilerstein. I missed the intro and would have bet the farm that I was listening to Du Pre until the announcement at the end. I immediately ordered this disc and it has me wondering about re-incarnation. Is Du Pre back? This disc is a wonderful sample of the immense talents of this new young artist. I can't wait for Alisa to record the my favorite Elgar for EMI.
Love it or hate it!.......2002-05-21
SUCH PRESENCE! This is cello playing without apologies. She is always secure in what she is saying whether that is what you wanted to hear or not. She is the real thing. May she go onto continue to create controvery through her playing!
Average customer rating:
- Wonderful Concerto Performances
- Lacks the "real" Elgar!
- The real du Pre, but not the *real* Elgar performance!!!
- Great performances, by one of the greatest cellists!
- a fitting memorial to a unique artiste

Customer Reviews:
Wonderful Concerto Performances.......2006-11-17
Of the six or seven cd albums that I have by Jacqueline du Pre, this album contains the meat and potatoes of du Pre's repertoire. Happily, she doesn't disappoint at a time when she was still physically healthy and developing musically. The Boccherini Concerto arranged by Grutzmacher, I believe she owns. The Monn Concerto is excellent and the Delius is a romantic dream. Don't miss this one, if you want hear the breadth of her short-lived talent.
Lacks the "real" Elgar!.......2005-04-28
Like other reviewers, I just want to say that this set lacks the famous Elgar recording by Jackie Du Pre. The Elgar performance on this CD is dull in comparison to her more famous performance. So, you will have to buy a separate CD for the Elgar. Other than that, this is a great set to have. I love the two Haydns especially.
The real du Pre, but not the *real* Elgar performance!!!.......2003-03-04
This is a comprehensive collection of Cello performances by a thrilling artist. Unfortunately, despite reviewer MacFarlane's assurances to the contrary, the producer of this CD has failed to include Jacqueline du Pre's *famous* and greatest performance of the Elgar Cello, and this is the reason for witholding a star. Ms.du Pre's famous performance of Elgar's Cello Concerto, Opus 85, was performed live in Philadelphia on November 27-28, 1970, with conductor-husband Daniel Barenboim, not Conductor Barbiroli. This Amazon review, comparing the two performances will indicate why this CD loses points for not featuring the Barenboim performance:
<
> The performance with Barenboim was formerly available on Sony. Today the Amazon search engine only turned it up one time in six search attempts using the SAME words! Elusive, but an essential recording nonetheless! Because confusion persists between the Elgar performances and conductors, it is necessary to persist in citing that it is Jacqueline Du Pre's performance with BARENBOIM which is so revered. Besides, the Sony disc which has the favored performance with conductor Barenboim, is also known for Barenboim's brilliant interpretation of the Elgar Enigma Variations. Daniel Barenboim's talent is becoming more and more visible and worthy of following closely. He's doing great things outside of music as well, so put his name in the Google search engine and find out!
Great performances, by one of the greatest cellists!.......2001-04-29
If there is one word for describing Jacqueline du Pre, it is MUSIC. She was the embodiment of music itself, because she gave all to the music she played. Some do not like her playing because it is too emotional. I echo the other reviewer's sentiments in that music is there to be played. Played with emotion. Music is about transmitting emotion to the listener, and du Pre was one of the best examples of how that could (and should) be done. Here, EMI has remastered and reissued most (I say most, because one concerto - the Lalo- has been omitted in this otherwise full compilation of du Pre's concerto recordings) of du Pre's concerto recordings. The Haydn concerto in C, is undoubtedly one of the most touching accounts, with its romantic sentiments. The same can be said of the Haydn in D and the Monn concerti, with the broad tempi, quite relaxed, and very opposite of Period performances Completely incorrect stylistically, but the performances are so moving and involved that all the fuss about stylistic correctness is throuwn out the window. I dare say that one is not going to get a more impassioned account of the Haydn C major concerto. It is among my absolute favourites. The Boccherini concerto is another matter. The version du Pre plays is not the original, but a mixture of the original, with bits borrowed from other Boccherini cello concertos, combined with Romantic styling by Grutzmacher (the 'editor' of the concerto). I don't like it as much as the Haydn concertos, but still it receives a bravura performance by du Pre with the English Chamber Orchestra under Barenboim. The Schumann and Saint-Saens concerti are unsurpassed for their passion and imaginativeness. The Schumann is tragic, but ends triumphantly, in a way that only du Pre could make it sound like that. The Saint-Saens is a less musically significant piece, but in du Pre's hands, it sounds like an important work. Dvorak's cello concerto is one of the greatest pieces in the cello repertoire, with its grand writing and poignancy. While du Pre's Dvorak concerto is not the best version one can buy, for the recording quality is notoriously horrible, with the orchestra sounding so distant from the cellist (who is placed far too forward) it is certainly one of the most outspoken and yes, impassioned accounts, interpretation-wise. Emotionally, it outdoes the justly famous Rotropovich/Karajan version. But the other Dvorak piece in this collection, the Silent Woods, is so touching that one is bound to cry at some stage of the 6-minute piece. The Delius concerto is a very rhapsodic, but a very engmatic one. Technically it is very demanding, because for once the technical difficulties are really due to the musical difficulties. It is hard to make sense of the work unless you are absolutely sure of its musical structure. But du Pre makes this sound easy, fully capturing the rhapsodic nature of the work, and sings beautifully. It was du Pre's first concerto recording, under one of the most arrogantly aristocratic conductors (arrogant to soloists, I mean, as he didn't regard them highly. But for du Pre, he was more than generous), Malcolm Sargent. The Elgar had to be included, didn't it? I mean, it is one of the great classics of the century. So there is nothing more to say about the Elgar. The Strauss tone-poem Don Quixote is a strange work, because it has a solo cello part (with a solo vioin and viola, who are usually members of the orchestra), a solo part that can be a soloist or the principal cellist from the orchestra cello section. It is strange, because the cello part is the most significant solo part, yet 80 per cent of the time it is outplayed by the orchestra, because the 'solo' cello plays the part of the orchestral cello section. But as to this performance, it was a run-through for a concert. Klemperer was supposed to be the conductor but he pulled out at the last minute and Boult was engaged. This historical recording does not sound like a run-through, although it si a bit messy at times ensemble-wise. But du Pre plays with absolute commitment. Her playing of the Finale must be one of the most poignant ever. The conductor's 'bravo' and the unanimous applause of the orchestra adds to the magic. I apologise for the long review, but if you have read this far, then I will say if you like du Pre and the cello, then this set is essential, and at mid price for CDs that would otherwise be full price and in single CDs, it is a bargain.
a fitting memorial to a unique artiste.......2001-02-09
The keyword with Jacqueline du Pre was always involvement, and so it is here. The performances in this collection are riveting. The Elgar, of course, is one of the most famous performances of all time - young cellist Du Pre with former cellist Barbirolli reaching to the absolute heart of this wonderful music. Though she plays with utmost and unvarying conviction throughout - and therefore these are not middle-of-the-road performances, and it is possible to sense a hothouse element in them as I do in the Haydn and the Monn, where stylistically she is far from faultless - the conviction, sincerity, guts and beauty of the playing carry you (and her) through. Curiously affecting is the end of 'Don Quixote', in a recording, with a bizarre history, which we are really very lucky to have (you can read about it in the set). At the end of a fine and fully characterised run-through, which is all it was, never meant to be issued, she plays with amazing poignancy the touching postlude. The performance ends, the counductor (Boult) shouts 'bravo' and the orchestra claps - it's all there, and we think of poor, wonderful Jacqueline, who never played a dishonest or uncommitted note, we are touched, and we are glad we bought this set!

I'm not a music expert.......2005-08-25
I don't know too much about music. I own over 700 cds, but I don't play music and I don't have much experience with this music. My only point of reference was the ninth symphony, seeing as every other piece in this box set was new to me. It sounds fine, nothing wrong with it as far as I can see.
Now, here's what you'll get in this box set, seeing as Amazon does not give it a description. 40 cds! no joke, you get 40 cds in this box set. It features:
1. Complete symphonies
2. Complete symphonic poems
3. Cello concerto
4. Piano concerto
5. Violin concerto
6. Requiem
7. Stabat Mater
8. Slavonic Dances
9. Complete String quartets
10. Chamber music
11. Piano Works (solo and duet)
12. Rusalka
As far as I can tell, the only things missing are The Spectre's Bride and Jacobin. Seeing as it is 40 cds, i have not had an opportunity to listen to it, however what i have heard i have been quite satisfied with.

excellent recording......i have been to prague twice and it is my favorite place on earth......the recording made me feel like i was there again.....
Dvorak in bits and pieces, but beautifully done.......2006-03-21
I can't deny that the BSO lost its luster under Ozawa's sadly protracted tenure in Boston, but you'd never know it from the glowing performances here--the opening Carnival Over. is a knockout. Orchestra nad soloist Itzhak Perlman are equally lovely in the F minor Violin Romance. There's only one other items here longer than 6 min., the 9-min. choral setting of Psalm 149.
I don't find bits-and-pieces collecitons very appealing, but this is a buoyant, heartfelt concert form beginning to end, featuring a dab of chamber music, an aria, two Salvonic dances, etc. Apparently there's an accompanying video of this celebration from Prauge in 1993, which accounts for why major artists like Frederica von Stade and Yo-Yo Ma were willing to appear for four min. If you are in a celebratory mood and don't mind the absence of a major work, it would be hard to better this joyous evening.
Dvoral in Prague - a true celebration!.......2005-10-18
No word can express the genius of this bunch of musicians - and with Ozawa it is pure delight. A must from Prague, 1993.
Richard Says "Frederica I'm In Love With You".......2004-04-10
Wow,,Frederica's performance is astounding!
Nobody, will ever top "The Song To The Moon"
I will cherish that recording forever!
Prague has heard the voice of a queen!
PR forever
Great masterpiece.......2003-03-25
This is an excellent Cd recorded in Prague, it's an hommage to Antonin Dvórak with an excellent interpretation of segments of the most important masterpieces composed by this Czech artist, the recording is excellent, if you are some audiophile this recording sounds great with excellent soundstage and acoustic atmosphere, also if you like Czech culture you will be surrounded by a feeling like if you were in Prague walking through Malá Strana, St.Wenceslao Square or Karl's bridge. I recommend this Cd very much.

Some of the pieces are unfamilier music by Dvorak, but most of them are beutiful. If you like Dvorak's music, you should listen to this. Sound quality is not bad, though it is not great.
Some Dvorák Rarities and Old Friends, Nicely Played.......2005-02-20
Although I have a number of CDs conducted by Dmitry Yablonsky, and though I knew he was a cellist, I don't recall hearing him play that instrument. On the basis of this CD I'd have to say that he is one of the better cellists around these days (Side note: in an upcoming review, I'll have more raves about the marvelous German cellist Maria Kliegel, whose Bach Solo Suites has lately been causing some compulsive listening on my part.) He gets a chance here to play and conduct two Dvorák cello and orchestra pieces: the semi-familiar 'Silent Woods' and the less-well-known 'Rondo.' 'Silent Woods' ('Klid' in Czech, sometimes known as 'Waldesruhe' in German) is occasionally heard in concert. It is a contemplative pastorale originally part of a solo piano suite. It sounds as if it couldn't have been composed for anything other than cello and orchestra; it's hard to imagine a pianist being able to maintain the slowly moving legato melodic line with anything comparable to the cello's ability to sing it ecstatically. Yablonsky's cello sings like a great baritone. His performance of 'Rondo,' a six-minute minor-key work is equally well-played but the piece itself is relatively trivial, if pretty enough.
The glory of this set is the first track, a six-minute wonder, 'Mazurka for Violin and Orchestra,' Op. 49 (B90), played full-out in Oistrakhian fashion by a violinist I am only vaguely familiar with, Alexander Trostianski. Both the piece and the performance are barnburners, full of exciting rhythms, virtuosic double-stops and other violinistic sparkle. This is not deep music, but it assuredly is exciting. Too bad violinists don't ordinarily play encores in orchestral concerts after they've played the obligatory concerto. This would send the crowd out dancing. Superb!
The 'American' Suite is beautiful and reasonably well-known, and has had a number of fine recordings, among them those by Neumann, Dorati and Tilson Thomas, as well as older ones by Ancerl and Talich. It is given a competitive performance with delicacy and point by Yablonsky and his increasingly impressive Russian Philharmonic.
The rest of the disk comprises works that are not from Dvorák's top drawer. 'Seven Interludes' for small orchestra, although with some fine moments, seem pretty slight to me, although the third movement, 'Con molta espressione,' a slow 3/4 meditation, is extraordinarily lovely and played rapturously here. The 'Five Prague Waltzes' are a cut above the Interludes as music per se, and the performance is exhilarating. One wants to get up and dance around the room. But, that said, I slightly prefer a recording by the Hungarian conductor Iván Fischer and the Budapest Festival Orchestra. 'Polonaise in E Flat Minor,' 'Nocturne in B Major' and 'Polka in B Flat Minor'--the latter an old friend that I fondly remember being played in a wind band arrangement in my own hometown with its large Bohemian population-- are all given fine performances here.
This would, I think, be a perfect budget recommendation for someone who wants to slightly broaden their knowledge of Dvorák's always tuneful and accessible orchestral music.

A Great Mix of Dvorak Favorites and Rarities.......2005-01-26
One of the reasons I love the music of Dvorak is that it is both predictable and varied. In all of his music, his distinct Czech national sound, as well as his flair for orchestration is easy to detect. Yet he is able to write some of the most creative pieces ever composed. The Naxos label has released a great catalogue of Dvorak's work. Most of the releases have some of his well known pieces as well as some of his lesser known works and this new release AMERICAN SUITE follows suite.
The best known works of the compilation include "American Suite," "The Polonaise in F Flat Major" and "Five Prague Waltzes." While all of the pieces are played beautifully by Russian Philharmonic Orchestra under the direction Dmitry Yablonsky, I found the works for soloist and orchestra most enjoyable. The "Mazurka for Violin and Orchestra" which opens the CD is a work that I am surprised is not a familiar concert showpiece and the same can be said for cello pieces "Rondo" and "Silent Woods."
Once again, Naxos has released a wonderful compilation at a reasonable price with excellent liner notes.

With this recording of cello classics, young Han-Na Chang consolidates her reputation as a performer of remarkable maturity and technical accomplishment. The restrained tone of quiet elegy that she brings to these works is hypnotic, and her ability to find the center of a phrase and highlight it with simple clarity is a gift one would expect to find in a player with a few more years' experience. As if that weren't enough, her playing in the upper registers of the instrument also sings with a kind of vocal splendor that is simply gorgeous. For this collection, she has chosen some familiar and some not-so-familiar works, which have been adapted and orchestrated where necessary (with sensitive care) by Chris Hazell. Of the less familiar works, the Adagio con Variazioni by Respighi is a revelation and clearly deserves a firmer place in the repertory. If there is one quibble, it is that the elegiac, wistful mood of the collection varies little and doesn't show the full range of Chang's talent. But when the playing is as good as this, that is only a minor caveat against an otherwise great CD. --Warwick Thompson
Customer Reviews:
I love this CD!.......2003-10-20
Very beautiful, moving and soothing. Relaxing and nurturing. I like it b/c she brings humble and quiet serenity rather than trying to boast technical skills (which is considerable by the way).
Simply Amazing.......2003-04-30
This is an amazing recording! 'Tis so very beautiful. I can't stop listening to it. I recommend anyone who enjoys classical music to pick this up. Blimey, everyone should try it!!!!
worth the money.......2002-03-19
I bought this CD a year ago and still listen to it pretty often. Han-na is able to deliver her sensitive interpretation of the pieces because she has the matching skills. The phrasing and the dynamics throughout the performance is really quite impressive and each piece comes off beautifully. Almost half of the pieces are adpated or arranged for solo cello and the orchestra background, and though I usually have a suspicious attitude towards such stuffs, Han-na's pieces can almost pass. The listeners will almost believe the pieces were actually arranged for such combination (i.e.she's good). A few flaws: the mood of all the pieces is the same (calm, serene, soothing...) and her repertoire doesn't give Han-na much chance to boast other aspects of "virtuoso" playing (i.e.fast motions, more impetuous passages, etc). Although I would certainly listen to more of her previous and future stuffs to judge if she deserves to be labeled a genius, this CD is, at least, worth the money. You won't regret buying it.
Too much hype!.......2001-09-11
First off, let me start by saying that i am a young cellist who listens to a lot of recordings and i am normally very open minded as to hearing new artists and repetoire. I bought this cd a couple months ago hoping to hear this so called queen of the cello or so she has been hyped up to be. When i put in the disc and pressed play i was pretty dissapointed. Han-na's playing can be extremely boring. Don't get me wrong, her technique is flawless and the program on the cd is quite good (i have played many of these songs and it's all great music) but her musicality at this point is very inexperienced. I hate being the only reviewer to give less than five stars but i really don't thing she deserves it. Not for this disc. Give her time, i'm sure she'll grow to be a seasoned artist.
A deeply moving recording.......2001-08-30
I have been a fan of Han-Na Chang since her debut disc came out 5 years ago. Since then I have followed her career intently. I haven't been disappointed so far. She is a cellist of great sensitivity, and no less fire! If her first two discs were previews of things to come, this disc represents full maturity that is evident in Chang's playing. On first sight, this may look like a well-marketed, but just another encores CD. I also thought at first, 'why devote a whole disc to short encores? Surely she could have done something more substantial'. When I listened to it, my doubts vanished completely. Each note she plays, she plays with utter dedication. She really seems to love the music, and instead of just showing off her technique, she finds deep meaning of every piece, even the over-played 'The Swan'. My favourite pieces on the disc are Sicilienne by Fauré, Glazunov's Chant du ménestrel, Respighi's seldom heard Andante con variazioni, and Dvorak's Klid. But all the pieces here, chosen by Han-Na herself, are wonderful. She plays WITH the orchestra, answering them or making a statement to which then the orchestra gives a response. I have seldom heard the Phlharmonia Orchestra so inspired. No doubt Han-Na had something to do with it. Also, Leonard Slatkin conducts with sensitivity, and the sound is first class EMI sound.
Incidentally, this recording, rare for a recital disc of this genre, has been received with great enthusiasm from two of the world's fussiest classical review magazines: The Gramophone, and BBC Music magazine.
Listen to this yourself, and I guarantee you that by the end of this CD, you'll feel like you're on 7th Heaven. A gorgeous disc!

Although most of this set is devoted to major cello concertos (Elgar, Saint-Saëns, Dvorák, Schumann, Haydn) that Du Pré played so well, perhaps the most treasurable recording is one of two Beethoven cello sonatas with the pianist Stephen Bishop (Kovacevich). Recorded very early in her career, these show Du Pré at her most eloquent, the early promise of a great career so cruelly interrupted. This set includes most of the cellist's best recordings. Too bad it's not 10 times the size. If the cellist's passion occasionally seems excessive, at least it's the right kind of flaw to have. --Leslie Gerber
Customer Reviews:
Mostly valuable for the sonatas & suites.......2002-07-02
Although Jackie du Pre's playing in the Elgar, Delius and Schoenberg concerti was superb, I for one simply find nothing to admire in that music. Perhaps this is my fault, perhaps not, but in general there are so many superb recordings of the Haydn and Dvorak concerti that only the sentiments surrounding her decline into MS and early death recommend them.
On the other hand, the recordings of the Chopin, Beethoven and other sonatas in the second 3 discs of this set are among the most moving recordings ever made. Jackie never had quite the golden tone or perfect technique of Feuermann or Yo-Yo Ma, and this shows itself more in the Bach unaccompanied cello suites where she plays a few scratchy-sounding turns, but the deep-down love and emotional commitment of her playing always communicated itself effectively. In short, then, I recommend this set for the sonatas & suites, but if you also enjoy these concerto recordings, you will love it all.
wonderful.......2001-04-22
this is a wonderful recording of some of the best cello music played by one of the worlds best cello players, the late jacqueline du pre. jackie had magic in her fingertips and listening to these recordings is pure joy, one of the best set I had the chance to hear.
Great record of Great cellist at Great budget price.......2000-11-04
The collection dosen't have Brahms's Cello Sonatas. But you picture her portrait by these 6 CDs( The cost is 7 dollars or less per one CD ). If you don't know what kind of cellist she was--yet, I want you to get it.
You would meet extraordinary emitted passion by Du Pre in Elgar( needlees to say, it is one of her most famous performance), Saint-Saens, Dovrak( in spite of unskillful conducting of Barenboim), Schumann. The set has not only her famous performance of the Concertos in disk 1-3, but also various Sonatas( Barenboim makes excellent piano playing in good harmony with his wife more than support) in disk 4-6.
Furthermore, the Bach's Cello Suite No.1 and No.2, as her only solo performance in this collection, are very interesting. Its passionate Bach(!!) is certainly like Du Pre.
Thanks EMI FRANCE for the great work!!
A Great Compilation of Great Cello Music.......2000-07-26
This collection, composed of the great works for the cello, is a must have in any serious classical music fan's library. It is an even better collection for the "newbie" to the genre. Jacqueline du Pre was undoubtedly one of the greatest artist of the century and her passion is well documented in this collection. Just get it...if you like classical music...you'll like this collection and the price is great too. What's to lose?
Wonderful! Indispensable! So why only four stars..?.......2000-03-19
This is definitely worth getting, and Amazon's price is right. Du Pre was one of the greatest ever (Yo-Yo Ma now owns her cello, in case any of you play Classical Music Trivial Pursuit), and I cry inwardly when I think of her early death. The Elgar Concerto alone on this set is enough to justify the purchase price. After she died, several "name" conductors vowed they would never perform or record it again with anybody, so strong was their memory of her. So why only four stars here? Two reasons: some of these performances are with hubby Daniel Barenboim conducting, and they just aren't quite in the same league as the other efforts. Just compare the Barbirolli Haydn and the Barenboim Haydn to see what I mean: both are slow-tempoed, and neither would be my top-drawer choice. But Barbirolli *almost* makes it work, and has a certain perverse logic, whereas DB is just dull and colorless and square. The second defect is the remastered sound, which oftentimes is not very good. Sure these are "historic" recordings, but they're not that old, most are stereo. Still, the sound is flat and clipped at the high end. This should not dissade anyone from getting this set, however. Just don't expect a sonic demo disc. You will get thrilling cello playing across a broad selection of repertoire.
