We had ordered this for "The Dukes of Hazzard" theme song for our 4yr old and our whole family has fallen in love with the cd. It makes me want to share some of the old fun and simple shows with my children. I forgot about some of those shows. It brings back good memories for my husband and me and the songs are new and exciting for our children. It's a nice change from children's cd's, but our children still think it's fun. The sound quality is good and the songs included on the cd are a great mix. I would definately recommend this one.

This is a great CD for people who watch a lot of TV -especially TV LAND and reruns of old shows when shows had actual theme songs. I took the CD to work and everyone loved trying to figure out what show the songs were from.

Seems like only yesterday the Kronos Quartet stepped up their career as musical mavericks with a coveted, wide-open contract with Nonesuch Records. Now it's Nonesuch's turn to give Kronos the big-package nod, gathering key works recorded by the group--from younger composers and time-tested veterans alike--into this 10-CD box set. As one might expect, the set is stuffed with contrasts, from the first CD, with its 11-part, upstepping John Adams suite and then the far more solemn Missa Syllabica from Arvo Pärt. Nearly 20 of these pieces here were composed expressly for Kronos, pitched and sculpted for their easily-racked mixture of straightforward string quartet roles and intelligently restructured approaches to the even the simplest gestures. Perhaps most key here is George Crumb's Black Angels, in large part due to Crumb's role in inspiring David Harrington to form Kronos 25 years ago. Crumb's music spirals and chases through the air, engaging high pitches and fast pacings as if they were ends in themselves. Gone from this set are most of the short snippets that have filled some of Kronos's other fine single CD recordings. In abundance instead are some of the legendary works: Morton Feldman's long, endlessly patient Piano and String Quartet (with Aki Takahashi), Steve Reich's unnerving Different Trains, and Henryk Górecki's String Quartets Nos. 1 and 2. There are also some of the astounding Eastern European works from Night Prayers as well, including the stunning Quartet No. 4 from Sofia Gubaidulina. And of course there are the Kronos biggie pieces: Philip Glass's works fill one CD, and so do Terry Riley's. What's more, Riley's Cadenza on the Night Plain and "G Song" are presented here in entirely fresh, new recordings. What the listener gets is a huge block of music, full of shifting colors and textures but perfectly apt in giving a wide-angle vantage on what Kronos has done for contemporary music. --Andrew Bartlett

A worthwhile investment.......2003-10-06

It would be an understatement to say that this is a fabulous box set. All 10 CDs are packed with some fabulous music that beautifull highlights the first 25 years of the Kronos Quartet, and the booklet included provides a great history of the group as well as nice blurbs on the composers and their pieces.

Equally nice about the box set is the inclusion of multiple new recordings, thus making this a worthwhile investment for fans. The Peter Sculthorpe Quartets are a particularly nice addition, as are the added Piazzolla, Part, and Riley compositions.

Along with this, the "classic" Kronos recordings are all here: "Black Angels" "Different Trains" "Salome Dances for Peace" (well, exceprts), and Feldman's Piano and String Quartet. Of particular note, I think is the inclusion of Gubaidulina's Quartet No 4, a fabulous recording that is otherwise hidden in Kronos' recording "Night Prayers."

Yes, this is quite an investment, but I firmly believe that it's worth it - longtime fans and newcomers alike have a lot to gain from this collection.

I like more classic period, like Hayden, but Cronos does it very well, technicaly excelent. The ten sets are wonderful recordings and the selection is unique. It deserves the investment, If you buy it, youre going to have more than ten hours of joy.

Amazingly Now Retrospective.......2001-06-26

Since their youthful start in the NW back in the 70's, Kronos has collaborated with, commissioned, or just played such a breadth of musicians it almost seems that breadth - and especially non western world culture - is their mission. But, while this conservatively and esthetically designed 25-yr-retrospective box (with its increasingly sophisticated photo-portraits) belies the pulsation of social angst and conscience that underlies the bulk of the inclusions, the latter concern, its vitality and relevance - and not some stylish chasing after cultural breadth - is what overtakes the listener/reader, rather soon. I say reader, since the booklet is very helpful, especially to the relative novice, and well balanced in its coverage of composers, historical contexts, performers, individual texts, etc.

There are probably more non contemporaries performed by the Quartet over the years than this selection would indicate. That undercuts their ties with the sense of revolution in music throughout the ages, but it leaves more time for the present: and that is where one expects the group wishes to be, is most contributory and challenged, and is best and most fairly judged. Highly recommended, both for those who know Kronos's work well and wish a handsome tribute on their shelf, and for those who do not but are open and ready to be affected, whether impacted esthetically, reminded socio-morally, or whatever combination of both befits.

How Could You Not Listen?.......1998-12-19

My opinion pales when compared to this CD. Indeed the group's ingeniousness, its knowing and its balls are in full display here, hopefully to put to rest any lingering contention that there is little more to Kronos than form. To any person who accepts the merits of 20th-century music, this CD presents the genius of our culture and teaches that daring and ingenuity do not have to be sacrificed on the road to technical brilliance. My only regret is that the CD does not include Kronos's interpretation of Bartok. But, so what? Górecki's here, as are Part and Benshoof. Listen to this CD -- soar and struggle with it.

Good for help to know up-to-date contemporaly music.......1998-11-28

The Kronos Quartet has released many albums. There let us see what the quartet has tried new titles and arrenges in each period. But this is the best set for understand the quartet as summary of thier works. The CDs are distributed by each composers and we can see thier identities easily.Unfortunately this dose not include all but be enough to see what the quartet has been.I hope that every classical music fans(not only contemporaly music fans) listen this CDs.

Great, but no prize.......2002-03-31

The selections from the Ring trilogy, Friends in need and Fallen Angel were excellent, however, some of the special request such as joxer the mighty, seemed a little bit rushed. Wasn't that song on Volume 2 already? Where was M'Lila's song from Destiny, or the music played During the first Kiss in "The Quest"
The cd has its good points, personally "It's Over" from "THAB" with its haunting melodies portraying the consequences of war.

I am a fanatic and devoted Xenite.I have a huge problem:i can't stop listening to that cd,since the first time i listened to it,which means 1 month!That cd is really exceptional and i think that every true and genuine Xenite should buy it!It's really good!I was moved when i heard the Fallen Angel part.I was passioned when i heard the Ring Trilogy!I was astonishing when i heard the bonus cues that were included,especially the cue from The Quill Is Mightier(fishin part),oh,i was completely satisfied!
Though,there is a complain:i can't understand,why after 6 cd's,the producers don't do a cd including cues like:M'laila's song,the cues from the Bacchaen festival,music from Deja Vou All Over Again,where in the end,Gabrielle says to Xena those wonderful words,or even the scene of the kiss in The Quest!That,i can't understand it!
Last, i believe that whoever likes LoDuca's music style,should buy this cd.
Pay attention to the 22 cue:Pas De Deux Femmes.It is one of a something and whoever remembers what's the scene of this song,will agree with me!Mmmm!

A MIX OF THE BEST, THE WORST AND THE MISSING.......2001-11-29

To all truly Xena fans this CD is a must-have but have some lacks... Fun (comedy episodes music) scores destroy the the great combination of FALLEN ANGEL, THE RHEINGOLD TRILOGY AND I FRIEND IN NEED. In the first selections LoDuca creates spectacular high level music good enough to be played in a Symphony orchestra concert. The others selections have easy-to-fill-space western cowboy music instead of put M'Lilas song of DESTINY, Amazon's climbing trees of ADVENTURES IN THE SIN TRADE and NAJARA vs XENA music that would be gladly accepted by us. I doubt the company will launch a next CD but if they'll do this track and another valuable more must be there and the adittion of some famous characters quotes like "I have many skills" from Xena.

Good at first..........2004-12-11

Well, I am a Huge DOD fan, don't get me wrong, but this recording just did'nt quite do it for me. With my first hearing of this record, I was amazed, and by the time the first track was finished, I felt tears of JOY in my eyes. It was absolute beauty! But my second time, it seemed to be a little less than what I had last remembered.

I felt shattered the next dozen times I popped it into my CD player. Adrian Hates and his band are a team of very talented musicians I literally worship! But this album was just mediocre once I really gave it a good listen to.

Tracks like Babylon, Butterly: Dance! and Dead Souls Screaming are major highlights on the album, but unfortunately the only ones too. Chemicals and a few other songs like to that are tiresom and repetative with screeching electronic "hormonies" I just cannot stand!

Try buying a used copy of this CD instead so you save the money. One of 18 Angels just gets older and older the more I play it.

Unique and hard to describe.......2004-05-28

I initially bought the Succubus club cd since I was looking to find a new taste in music. I also had been into Vampire: The Masquerade role-playing game and was looking for some background music to listen to while we played. I listened to the bands and studied closer onto this band. I bought this cd and was astounded. The cd is perfect for what I needed as ambience, and it's just great all around. Very dark, hard to understand the lyrics, a lot of techno, and the voices are unforgettable. My first cd of this band and definitely not my last!

A bit of electronic poetry.......2004-02-13

I do have weird tastes sometimes, maybe that is why I like this album. How to describe it? Darkwave keyboard as if you were listening a horror film blend with techno on which the singer does not really sing but recitate poems like a dead guy.

Favorite songs: "Chemicals", "Mankind", "Darker".

It is pretty unusual.

Diary of dreams is god of mixing(in my opinion asfar as i know). His voice is perfect for the music.The musics a mix of a lot of goth and industrial techno and dance...I also reccomend Gridlock for his mixing and voice.

Like Rainbows.......2005-12-07

This album contains some very pleasing music. There's a selection of famous Christmas carols, the majority of which are played as instrumentals, with Liona Boyd on classical guitar, Georges Zamfir on pan flute, and a fine team of other musicians, including Toronto's Children's Chorus and the Orpheus Choir.

Five of the selections include lyrics. The first is the title song, "Christmas Dreams," which begins "Christmas dreams are like rainbows." The others are "Song of Peace," "Silent Night," "Hark the Herald Angels Sing," and "It Came Upon a Midnight Clear."

It's a good choice for the Holiday season, maybe even more so on the evening of, say, December 6 (Saint Nicholas' Day) or December 24 (Christmas Eve, of course).

If you are a Pagan, the Holiday season is a great time to invite one's Christian friends over to celebrate Yule, sing "O Tannenbaum," and put presents under the tree. If you want to go, um, whole hog, you can even perform the sonargoltr (sacrificing the Yule pig) for the feast. But don't do that in front of the guests! Instead, get this fine album and use it to promote togetherness.

A fine Christmas CD for your collection........2000-05-22

Guess what my wife gave me last Christmas? It was "Christmas Dreams" by Liona Boyd.We played "Christmas Dreams" over, over, and over.... Georges Zamfir plays pan flutes to provide a lovely blend with Liona's beautiful classical guitar playing of Christmas season tunes. Other guest appearances are by Roger Whittaker, The Toronto Children's Chorus, and The Orphius Choir. I enjoy all 14 tracks and highly recommend this CD for this Blessed Christmas Season.

Dreams of Angels is the best CD I've ever purchased. It is relaxing, you can dream or leave it on in the background. I like to play it when I drive. It relaxes me. And the music is beautiful.

If you long for some really extraordinary enchanting music to ease your tension, induce sleep, and aide in meditation or just to synchronize yr dreams this is the CD for you. Its for you to lay down and visualize your favorite relaxing scene,and let this wonderful mix of dreamy and lullaby like music to allow the best dream and sleep possible. Toddlers loooove this enchanting magical work of art!!!they really delight in the magical instrumental tones and nature's sounds surrounding the ambiance within each melody. I played this CD coincidentally when my niece age 19months old was around and she instantly starting dancing with such magic and beautiful natural movements expressing without words the most amazing rythm and love for this work of art. Its like listening to stars and moons if they could ever speak in soft loving music. This CD induces "dreams" too...and its perfect for people who are ill and need some real magical but soft quiet music. I was so taken by my niece's response to the magic contained in each melody that she forever stayes in my mind ...circling around graciously in her small steps as she danced moving her head from side to side and doing such tender moves she took my breathe away ...along with the music. IT IS THE BEST FOR MOMS with toddlers or anybody who likes to get away from the ordinary and sometimes stressful life. There is no way to describe this CD and its magic until one listens to it and leaves earth to fly to some faraway star! I highly recommend it!

I have been looking for John McCormack on CD for years. I was thrilled when I found this and other CDs on Amazon. I have an LP that I bought decades ago and I have almost worn it out. The CD quality music is so much better!

With special emphasis on the variety presented in this collection, this album has a broadness of scope that will appeal to anyone who appreciates the magic of the human voice.
McCormack was perhaps the most popular entertainer in the world during his career, comparable with the superstars of today, only richer in the currency of his day.
Though purists may have criticized his shift to the popular venue as opportunism, and perhaps desertion of his training in the classical tradtions, he was simply presenting what people wanted to hear. Whether he set a pattern of career management followed by modern entertainers or was simply happiest when the accolades flowed over him matters not. The talent and richness are his legacy to us.
His range and vocal dexterity are well illustrated and represented by this larger than usual collection, and anyone with a particular favorite tune in his rather loose genre will likely find it here.
After a journey through this collection, listeners may well gain another special melody or two for addition to their personal list of "best ever" songs and singers.
Although it may be considered a bit foolish, some will choose this album for only one or two tracks. Some call that trait wasteful, but when a jewel of performance is played again and again, the teardrop may fall once more, and the heart will thrill yet again.
This album will please many musical palates, even those who claim no special fondness for "Irish Tenors."

Short and Sweet.......2001-04-18

This four song EP showcases Pendragon at there best. Overall these songs are mellower than those found on other releases by the band. Do not let that scare you away, there is a great deal of passion displayed through these four songs. This may be a good starting point for those who are not familiar with Pendragon. Pendragon's somewhat simplified and melodic mix of mid period Genesis (late 70's early 80's), early Marillion (Fish era) and Pink Floyd (Late 70's early 80's) is well displayed here. This Ep is worth it just to hear the wondeful "Sister Bluebird" which is one of my favorite songs by the band. Fans of the so called "neoprogressive rock" sound, i.e. IQ, Pallas, Marillion, Arena, Jadis, etc. should enjoy Pendragon. Fans of Genesis should also enjoy Pendragon, however do not buy this expecting a Genesis clone, you will be disappointed.

An Excellent EP from Pendragon! Get it!.......2000-10-20

If you are fan of Pendragon, or progressive rock in general, then be sure to add this one to your shopping cart! Although this four song EP lasts just over 25 minutes, what it lacks in length, it more than makes up for in pure quality! This EP was recorded as a gift to fan club members between the "Window of Life" and "Masquerade Overture" albums, and it retains the high quality level of that period in Pendragon history. Each of the songs is excellent in its own right, "The Third World In the U.K." is a deeply progressive piece, with enough dramatic twists and turns to give drummer Fudge Smith a real workout! Anyone who is a fan of Clive Nolan's keyboard work really must hear his fast and furious solo on "Third World", great stuff! "Dune" is a more straight-forward pop-rock tune, with a memorable chorus, and excellent lyrics and vocal touches from Nick Barrett. The melodic prog anthem "Sister Bluebird" is possibly one of Pendragon's finest tracks ever, full of mystery and majesty...not to mention some some of Barrett's most emotionally gripping guitar work! Then the EP concludes with the title track "Fallen Dreams and Angels", a truly beatiful piece of melodic rock, highlighted by a nice blend of acoustic guitar, flute-like keyboards, and a heartfelt vocal performance from Barrett. All in all, if you are at all into the music of Pendragon, don't let this almost forgotten gem pass you by!

I have many Pendragon CD's, and this is one of my favorites. I wish Amazon had 'Sister Bluebird'on here to listen to...beautiful. I recommend this one! -Susan
