Editorial Reviews
Halana
"...Advent indicated signs of life in a genre long dormant in the 80s 'experimental' scene..."

Product Description
Jagjaguwar is excited to reissue Richard Youngs' Advent, his very first vinyl originally released in 1990 his own No Fans label. Only 300 LPs were released initially. It was then later released on the Table Of The Elements label and quickly went out of print. The record has became a true underground success story and a critical darling, with Alan Licht putting it on his "Minimal Top Ten" list in Halana. Simply put, it is essential. Excerpts from Richard Youngs' essay, accompanying the CD, provide the best backdrop to this very special record. Youngs has since become the king of the progressive minimalists and his output has remained prolific. Since 2000, he has released five full-length records on Jagjaguwar alone, in addition to multiple collaborations with other artists such as Makoto Kawabata (Acid Mothers Temple), Simon Wickham-Smith and Neil Campbell.

I ordered this cd for a book club I was hosting on the book "The Pillars of the Earth" by Ken Follett. It was perfect "mood" music for the discussion and the price was unbeatable!

5 out of 5 stars Definitely Meditative.......2007-03-09

The gift that these men are able to share is worth listening to. To be quiet in yourself and allow space for this soulful chanting is an experience in itself.

Wow with glory this cd shines, The music is ever so awesome :)

5 out of 5 stars Soundtrack, FF VII Advent Children.......2007-02-20

Exactly like in the movie. I do like how they re-do the One Winged Angel.

5 out of 5 stars FF:Advent Children DVD.......2007-01-03

Awesome movie! A must see for any FF fan!
::WARNING-POSSIBLE SPOILER::
But as a particular Aeris/Aerith lover, don't hope for any truth to those ressurection rumours floating around. Just like the game itself (which has been proved to be incomplete and had originally been programed to accomodate the resurrection), its bogus. But she still gets some interesting screen time. Evidently, Tifa's CGI character looks almost exactly like her English voice actress, Rachel Leigh Cook!

5 out of 5 stars FFVII - Nobuo Uematsu THE BEST.......2006-12-17

Nobuo Uematsu is a composer I wish everyone could listen to. FFVII AC soundtrack is just incredible as everyones posted. Fans of FFVII will be taken back in time, to both the game and movie. Nonfans too can appreciate the music!

Nobuo just is a talented composer who can create any type of music fantastically, this track ranges from classical, gospel, hard rock, techno, operatic, just... he does any genre with ease.

This music and FFVII itself has a special place for me, and the music was at the forefront to make the story, characters and experience be unforgettable. Of course playing the game itself I am more emotionally attached to the music and even movie... All the characters themes, everything is here. Mostly from the game, there are original stuff here tho.

WORTH MENTIONG personally... (ending in my favorite on 2nd CD, "Cloud Smiles"

FIRST CD -

2. Promised Land - just great, gospel like, always inspiring and solemn at the same time.

3. Beyond the Wasteland - watch your house rumble! The bass beats during the first half are great. Then it turns into a great action set, gypsie like driving song, always fun to listen to!

4. (piano themes) Aerith's, Tifas... because beautifully done on piano, always takes me back to game. Just wonderful pieces by themselves, I mean Aerith, come on! =)

5.) Battle in Forgotten City - such a percussive, bass driven piece with rock and choir and Herman like violins. I can play this one over and over so fun and great.

2nd CD -

Divinity I - alwyas gives me shivers. Classic Nobuo deep choirical, operatic cinematic classical orchestral action!

Divinity II - Like I. But inpsiring as cloud flies high to save the day... and then Aerith's theme at the peak, just always gets me.

MY FAVORITE - CLOUD SMILES - This purely because it effects me emotionally everytime, takes me back to game, and then end of AC... Aerith such a big thing, just seeing how it ends now, makes you happy, and you feel exactly what Cloud does as she leaves to the music.

ANYWAYS... Long rant but just one of those things, as a fan of anything, the music makes it all come alive for ya! Anything that sends you back in time, effects you on an emotional level is worth raving about!

Nobuo Uematsu - as Barret would say, "You are the man!"

5 out of 5 stars amazing music!!.......2006-08-06

i LOVE this cd very very much. the piano is amazing and the "rockish songs" are awsome...!!!! the piano songs are very peaceful. If u love the movie, then i know u will love this. oh my gosh !!! get this cd now! (i am listening to it now!!!!!!!!!)

5 out of 5 stars Instruments of the Orchestra - Great Reference Material!.......2007-04-04

This set lends itself to greatly enhancing one's knowledge of the orchestra, instruments in it, and their usage. I am a huge music buff, and I still picked up a great deal I previously did not know. I highly recommend this for all who wish to understand the origin of music, as well as the processes that are employed to create music!

5 out of 5 stars Beginner or Expert.......2007-03-12

This CD is excellent for the beginner or expert! To be able to haear the instrumets separately and then together really provides a good education. and/or refresher. The book thaty comes with the CD is alomost worth the price by itself!

5 out of 5 stars Very Informative and Enjoyable.......2006-11-20

Whether you're a music novice or pro, "The instruments of the Orchestra" is a very worthwhile purchase. The 7 CDs, with a total of 8 hours, are expertly narrated by Jeremy Siepmann. He's a great speaker, very much like the late Leonard Bernstein was. Mr. Siepmann takes you on an unforgetable musical journey covering the origins and use of the various orchestral instruments throughout musical history. The balance between his narration and a wealth of musical examples, which range from snippets to entire movements, is superb. The comprehensive enclosed booklet is excellent and faithfully follows the 7 CDs in content. Even with my 40+ years of music training I still learned new things from this wonderful collection. Considering the excellence of the content, and a cost that translates to about $5 per disc, this collection is a great value. Grab it, you won't regret that you did. Five solid stars!

3 out of 5 stars Frank's view.......2006-08-19

This boxed set of CD's with booklet achieved all I had hoped that it would. There are good samples of individual instruments and well done commentary on each. The only drawback was that some of the samples were too brief and could have been longer, hoiwever I guess this fits in with time constraints of the medium. It has given me a lot of clues as to future purchases of CD's for listening to individual instruments. Altogeth a satisfactory purchase and a welcome addition to my collection.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Intro for Those Not Familiar with the Orchestra.......2003-11-08

I've listened to classical music for years and am interested in composition. I bought this CD set to learn how an orchestra and its instruments work. I thought the CDs would be a nice but boring lecture. They aren't! Not only are they FUN but they are informative as well. I learned a huge amount from each CD and couldn't wait to listen to the next one.

The narrator and writer is a great speaker and holds your attention well. He is definitely knowledgeable. He provides musical examples for each point he makes, so you get to "hear" what he just talked about. I'd say the CDs are about 65% music and 35% narration. You'll learn about the range of instruments, some history, different ways to play them, how they sound, and how they are used in the orchestra. This CD set was a great learning experience and is sold at such a low price!

I recommend this CD for those who want to learn about classical music and those who know about it but are interested in learning more about the inner workings of an orchestra. You'll learn much useful information. For instance, the Rite of Spring (with that eerie start) is written for bassoon! I never knew a bassoon could sound like that but now I do.

The one complaint I have is the last CD. This deals with the orchestra. I wanted more of a tour of how the orchestra has been used through history up to the present. Instead, it was a tour of how different groups of instruments sound. I thought it could have been better. The other 6 CDs are excellent.

5 out of 5 stars The picture.......2006-12-11

I haven't purchased the CD but the picture of the inside of a church on the cover is not of a British church, like one would assume since it says its a recording of British choirs. This picture is of Notre Dame Basilica in Montreal, Quebec, Canada. Just thought i'd let you know. I'll be honest; I'm one to judge things by it's cover and if the company took such care to choose a 'British' church for their British choir CD, I'm willing to bet the music is equally well selected... I'm being sarcastic. But I gave the product 5 stars because I didn't want to hurt its ratings just because i'm cynical. But check out the church if you're ever in Montreal, it's truly beautiful... here I'm not being sarcastic.

One of the most important and magical song cycles in contemporary music, Ancient Voices of Children, is the setting of a series of haunting texts by the Spanish poet Federico García Lorca for mezzo-soprano, boy soprano, and chamber orchestra. The piece made a huge impression on audiences at its initial performances. Indeed, this recording became something of a cult phenomenon, much like the Górecki Third Symphony today; and if you weren't around for the initial discovery, now's your chance. Music for a Summer Evening uses essentially the same forces as Bartók's Sonata for Two Pianos and Percussion, and creates an evocative, glittering nightscape. Great stuff.--David Hurwitz

5 out of 5 stars An Avant-Garde Must Get.......2003-05-07

I remember a time when I was at a flea market and was looking through some vinyl records (possibly about the time before I got my first CD player). One particular record got my attention. The cover sort of resembles a newspaper article with a picture insert of a nebula. What got my attention were "Makrokosmos" and that it was a Nonesuch record. I've heard a few Nonesuch records and notice how different the music tends to be. So I thought I buy it for $1 (if I recall correctly). When I listened to it at home, I knew I made a good choice. It had the strange 20th century music - rather atonal. It's a good thing the vinyl record was in good shape, especially when it came to the very quiet parts. I have that record today, still in good shape.

About a few years after buying the vinyl record, I was looking through some CDs in a store (after I got my first CD player). I've found the Nonesuch CD that had "Ancient Voices of Children" AND "Music for a Summer Evening (Makrokosmos III)." I didn't buy it because I wanted to get it on sale. Well, time passed. One day, I saw one up for bid on eBay. I think I was the only bidder on it. The jewel case may have a few scratches (which I wouldn't worry about) but the CD itself was like new.

I'm glad that I got it on CD. I could listen to the music without any clicks or pops you would hear from a vinyl LP (especially since the music gets very quiet at times). Although you wouldn't get the "warm analog sound" you get from the vinyl. Nevertheless, it does sound very good considering that it's AAD. Whoever likes avant-garde music may want to get this.

One thing I want to let you know. Whoever did the tracking on the CD must've misjudged about the beginnings of "Myth" and "Music of the Starry Night." "Myth" begins at index 8:02 on track 9. Tracks 10 and 11 are the last movement, "Music of the Starry Night." Take note of that when listening to this CD.

5 out of 5 stars Crumb in poetic and eerilie beautiful mood.......2002-06-17

Those who know US composer George Crumb mainly from the terrifying musings of 'Black Angels' (made semi-famous by the Kronos Quartet) will probably be surprised by the haunting beauty of 'Ancient Voices'. Based on texts from Lorca, the rich but sparing instrumentation is complemented by evocative, floating soprano - sometimes sung into the piano to create an eerie, mystical ambient. My first exposure was at London's Roundhouse in 1976, where even the background rumbling of trains couldn't sublimate the extraordinary lure of Crumb's sound world. Truly gorgeous and thoughtfully composed.

5 out of 5 stars Exceptional.......2002-06-15

This disc is flawless. The caliber of music making is extremely high, and the pieces themselves are among Crumb's absolute finest.

Music for a Summer Evening is, perhaps, the lesser signifigant work of the two presented here. Even so, it is an astounding presentation of of Crumb's effective use of extended tequniques, and the ability of his atmospheric writing to stir up strong emotions. Here, Crumb has significantly built on the two pianos/percussion format that Bartok made famous in his Sonata.

Ancient Voices of Children is an important song cycle in the post-WWII repertoire. His extended singing tecniques are used to great effect, and the haunting, mystical effects that he cojours within the limited instrumentation are amazing.

Crumb is one a handfull of composers that can write atmospheric music so well, and pull off these avant-garde tecniques so usefully. If you do not know his music, start with this disc; it's breathtaking.

5 out of 5 stars Just Listen.......2002-06-08

I just recently reaquainted myself with this work after about thirty years. Ancient voice of Children retains all of the mystery and magic that I heard when I first encountered the piece at the age of 11. The work resembles not so much a conventional piece of music as a mystic ceremony. Set to fragments from the poetry of Frederico Garcia Lorca, the music captures the magical nature of the poet's verse. The unusual instrumental effects are haunting. Amoung my favorite is the quotation from Bist Du Bei Mir played on a toy piano as a haunting elegy for a dead child. The work builds in it's last section to a shattering climax.

The perfomance is quintessential. Jan DeGaetani was marvelous in this style of music and is sorely missed as a performer. The ensemble is spirited and very precise. The only thing that you miss on this CD is the visual choreography of a live performance, which is hypnotizing.

Macrocosmos III was a new piece to me and is every bit as haunting as other Crumb music. The ending is luminous...en eternal spinning out of music in the Lydian scale.

Be aware, this is avant garde music, though I feel it is quite assessible to those who listen without preconceptions. It is certainly more assessible than Elliot Carter or Boulez. It is not Part or Gorecki...but then not everything has to be. For me, this is not about style but about substance. Crumb moves me every bit as much as more assessible composers. You just have to listen with different ears, that's all.

1 out of 5 stars What is the Opposite of Music? Listen to this and find out!.......2001-11-02

Here I am, the skeleton at the feast of 5* reviews proving again the old adage that "One man's meat is another man's poison". I hardly believe that even a small percentage of people (let's leave aside Professors of Avant-Garde Music for the time being) would be able to listen to, let alone enjoy, more than a few minutes of this music (I use that term in it's very loosest definition). It is ridiculous, therefore, that this should have a preponderance of 5* reviews. Consequently I believe that I am doing a service by standing up and pointing out "bad" music just as I do in applauding "good" music.

I came at this CD - which I bought thanks to some of the aforementioned 5* which I was foolish enough to believe - with the expectation that it would be modern, avant-garde and probably rather ineffable initially. I am prepared for this, believing that often the best music is not instantly grasped and needs careful auditioning. When I listened to it, however, I found that my expectations were not nearly extreme enough. This is music trying so hard to establish its originality that it appears to have progressed well beyond my definition of what music actually is. It is music as art, as a statement and not music to listen to - think about this a little! Hence my opening line - this is the opposite of music.

Instead, this production seems to be comprised of irrelevant and inconsequential noises, none of them musical. To save you the money, and more importantly the time, I will precis this CD for you:

A womans shriek followed by about 20 seconds of silence.
A sound rather like a large rodent being let loose inside a piano.
Some blocks of wood being banged together.
More shrieking.
More silence.
A voice making a strange sound as if copying a phone ringing.
More silence.
More wood being banged together.
More silence

Etcetera, etcetera, ad nauseam

At some point in this avant-garde nonsense somebody is going to blow the whistle and irreverently point out that the "Emperors New Clothes" do not actually exist. In the service of music, as opposed to "art", I am prepared to do the pointing! This production is nothing more that a deeply unmusical joke against those pseudo-intellectuals who completely miss the concepts of humanity and accessibility in music. "Composers" who write this stuff do so as to hide their lack of musical creativity behind an intellectual argument. Don't believe the hype, leave this one on the shelf!

For those aesthetes and enthusiasts who are intent on heading down a progressive route of "classical" music which yet retains any humanity and sympathy, Part and Gorecki appear to have been able to create music of originality and humanity, proving that it can be done.

Leave this production to those pseuds more interested in wallowing in their own misconceived esoteric intellectualism than in actually enjoying music.

5 out of 5 stars Bach JS : Advent Cantatas with John Eliot Gardiner.......2007-01-25

A magnificent interpretation of JS Bach's Advent Cantatas by Sir John Eliot Gardiner, a great joy and companion for those wonderful Advent Sundays.

5 out of 5 stars Very nice performances of Bach cantatas.......2006-01-09

Bach wrote two really good cantatas to the text "Nun komm, der heidend heiland and the Monteverdi Choir under the direction of John Eliot Gardiner does a wonderful job of performing these delightful cantatas. Both cantatas start with impressive choruses and are filled with nice arias.

Cantata BWV 36 "Swhings freudig euch empor" also provides some good classic Bach with a good interplay of various instruments with touching vocals. As a rule, look for Gardiner performances of Bach cantatas because they are performed well and are delightful to the ear. If Gardiner and the Monteverdi Choir have performed a Bach Cantata, snatch it up.

5 out of 5 stars Spellbinding Performancesof Bach Led by Gardiner.......2003-07-16

I am not familiar with Bach's prodigious output of choral music, but this splendid CD will surely be the first of many in my collection. Sir John Eliot Gardiner leads his English Baroque Soloists and Monteverdi Choir in a set of spellbinding performances of J. S. Bach's cantatas composed in honor of Advent. These are lyrical, vibrant performances from both the original instruments and the choir, with special note given to Nancy Argenta's silky phrasing. I have no doubt that these will be viewed as the definitive recordings of Bach's Advent cantatas. The sound quality is exceptional for an early 1990's recording. Fans of historically correct performances, Sir John Eliot Gardiner, and of course, J. S. Bach, will not be disappointed with this CD.

5 out of 5 stars A delight.......2001-01-25

J. S. Bach lavished his inventive genius on the cantatas he wrote for weekly church services, and they are altogether too little known. This recording features three cantatas for the First Sunday in Advent (the only Sunday in Advent at which concerted music was sung). All three are built around the great German Advent hymn "Nun komm der Heiden Heiland," written by Martin Luther. Despite their common reliance on this hymn, there is no tedium here; each cantata has its own distinctive voice and message.

Gardiner conducts vital performances. Outstanding among the soloists is the silvery-voiced Nancy Argenta. Those who claim that historically informed performance practice and early instruments give anemic results have not heard performances like this.

5 out of 5 stars Beautiful wind ensemble music.......2003-06-29

This treasure of a CD features some beautiful wind ensemble music, which really should receive more attention in the mainstream. Not your typical Sousa CD, this features the wind ensemble at its best, with both sections of the full, gorgeous ensemble sound and solo sections featuring the individual tone colors that contribute to the unique ensemble sound. The emotional capacity of this type of ensemble is huge, and this CD demonstrates that well. I would certainly recommend this CD to any lovers of band music and classical music, particularly those who enjoy the Romantic and 20th century composers who tend to use the winds to a fuller extent.

This was the first choral CD I've ever purchased when I started becomming involved with choir during my senior year of high school five years ago. My director was telling the choir that he had finally found his copy at a music store and referred to it as the "Holy Grail" of choral recordings. So, I went out to find my own copy and I'm still blown away by it today. I've even given copies as gifts. The music is certainly relaxing and such, but what I most value from it is the spiritual magic. The Choir of Trinity College, Cambridge (then and now my favorite choir in the world) brings every composition to life in such a way that's pure, elegant, and deep. Listening to this music and enjoying this choir has allowed me to set my own standard of singing and compositional excellence.

5 out of 5 stars One Small Correction.......2004-03-06

I keep finding new things to love on this CD, including the fact that it has the first recording I found of Gabriel Faure's beautiful Soprano (or Soprano/Alto) duet Ave Maria., Opus 93. The same recording appears on another CD where the singers are named. The above description of this selection unaccountably adds a baritone. Incidentally, Faure also composed a shorter SATB Ave Maria, which John Rutter has recorded.

I only wish the recording included the complete text of Psalm 50/51 from Gregorio Allegri's Miserere Mei Deus. This might come from John Rutter's recently edited score, published by Oxford Press, if I'm not mistaken. I, for one, do not find this selection (or indeed the entire recording) too long and I believe that the embellishments at the end (mentioned in another review) are probably correct when considering performance conventions of the time of its composition.

5 out of 5 stars Gorgeous music, gorgeous performances.......2003-06-19

I am a semi-professional singer with a BA in Music, and I bought this CD with some trepidation because it looked like one of those dreadful "pop classical" compilations that are everywhere lately. But it had lots of great repertoire all in on place, so I decided to risk it, and I was not disappointed! In fact, this is now one of my favorite choral CDs.

As usual, the Choir of Trinity College delivers stunning performances, and the music itself is just gorgeous. Lots of "church" favorites from a wide range of musical periods. The mood of the CD is definitely on the mellow side, but it's perfect for those quiet moods. I love this CD -- highly recommended!

5 out of 5 stars Stunning collection suitable for music nuts or newbies alike.......2002-03-18

Even as an avid fan of classical music with very picky tastes, there was just so much good music packed on these two (cheap!) discs for me to take in at once!
The perfectly balanced and locked chords can really give you chills.

I gave this CD as a present to a good friend of mine who was not so familiar with the genre, with tremendous results. I think this would make a great gift to anyone with the slightest inclination towards classical music.
