About the Artist
Wayne Wallace's debut CD, "Three In One", accurately reflects his vast musical passion and background. Affectionately dubbed "The Doctor" by Latin Jazz legend Pete Escovedo, Wayne's career spans over twenty years as master trombonist, highly solicited composer/arranger, and widely and highly respected music educator. Master Latin percussionist and music historian John Santos says "Wayne himself is a "three in one" persona. His extremely influential combination of writing, playing, and teaching indisputably places him among the most important musicians ever to emerge from the Bay Area". A San Francisco native, Wayne credits the Bay Area for being his musical cradle and crucible. Starting trombone at age nine, by high school he was already playing professionally. His valuable on-the-scene experience was augmented by formal studies as a music performance major at San Francisco State University (where he is now faculty), and private study with the great vibist Bobby Hutcherson and jazz trombone legend Julian Priester. As a trombonist, Wayne simply loves to play all types of music, and is fond of citing Duke Ellington's saying that "there are two kinds of music - good and bad". In Jazz, Wayne has performed with The Asian American Jazz Orchestra (The Far East Suite), The Count Basie Orchestra, John Handy, Joe Henderson, Earl "Fatha" Hines, Bobby Hutcherson, Sonny Rollins, McCoy Tyner, and Tony Williams. His performance and recording credits in Funk, R& B, and Soul include Ray Charles, Con Funk Shun (To The Max, Fever), Earth, Wind and Fire (Touch The World), Aretha Franklin (Aretha), Dr. John, Gladys Knight, Curtis Mayfield (Curtis Mayfield Tribute), and Boz Scaggs (Come On Home). Wayne is now recognized by historians as an emerging force in the history of Latin trombone for his work with Conjunto Cespedes (Una Sola Casa, Flores), Steve Berrios (Son Bacheche), Los Van Van, Irakere, Pete Escovedo (The Island, Mr. E, Yesterdays Memories, Tomorrow's Dreams), Tito Puente (Un Poco Loco), and John Santos and The Machete Ensemble (Tribute To The Masters, Machetazo).

Wayne's composer discography has over thirty titles, and his songs have graced the recordings of Babatunde, Con Funk Shun, Pete Escovedo, Sheila E/Pete Escovedo/Tito Puente (Familia Latina), Machete, and Conjunto Cespedes. His masterful work as an arranger has contributed to the sound and direction of such groups as Con Funk Shun, Conjunto Cespedes, The Pete Escovedo Orchestra, The Machete Ensemble, Dr. Loco's Rockin Jalapeno Band, Jesus Diaz and QBA, and Santana. John Santos has this to say about Wayne as a music scholar and educator: "Wayne is a great teacher whose patience and clarity have enlightened countless information seekers, including myself. He extends far beyond the traditional canon of the Jazz educator. He has so much to offer in terms of music in general, history, theory, composition, arranging, technique, and experience. He's taught literally thousands of students of all ages over the years". Wayne's deep, passionate, and systematic love for cross-cultural musical exchange has resulted in his teaching Jazz and Blues in Havana, Cuba (at the Escuela Nacional del Arte), and Afro-Cuban music in Germany. He is on the faculties of San Francisco State University, The Jazz School, The Stanford Jazz Workshop, Jazz Camp West, and The San Francisco Arts and Humanities Elder Hostel Program. He also teaches an ongoing summer workshop on Afro-Cuban music at Gallery 37 in Chicago.

"Three In One" is a culmination and summation of Wayne's immense contribution to the intercultural scene known as "Latin Jazz".

Three In One is about the synergy and new sensibilities that happen when musical styles blend -- and Wayne's compositional penchant for combining three styles, rhythms, or structures, in a single song. The musical styles, structures, and rhythms blended here come from Jazz, Funk, and Afro-Caribbean musical sources -- mambo, cubop, songo, reggae, bomba, samba, conga de comparsa, soca. The result is deep Jazz-Latin - a musical synthesis that respects the artistic, folkloric, and spiritual roots and disciplines associated with the musical forms. In the best historic traditions of Latin Jazz, the listener is treated to beautiful melodies, strong rhythmic bass lines, bright and tight ensemble playing, close harmonies, call/response, and sparkling solos -- all supported by a deep Latin rhythm section which explores the rich traditions of Afro-Caribbean drumming. The montunos, monas, and tumbaos are here and, of course, clave is never crossed! You will feel the pulse, and the salsa dancers will definitely not leave the floor!

"Three In One" has seven Latin Jazz Originals, Latinized versions of the jazz classics "Straight No Chaser" by Thelonious Monk and "Moon Rays" by Horace Silver, a beautiful ballad in the spirit of Duke Ellington and Bill Strayhorn, and two original arrangements of traditional Afro-Cuban spirituals.

The narrator and writer is a great speaker and holds your attention well. He is definitely knowledgeable. He provides musical examples for each point he makes, so you get to "hear" what he just talked about. I'd say the CDs are about 65% music and 35% narration. You'll learn about the range of instruments, some history, different ways to play them, how they sound, and how they are used in the orchestra. This CD set was a great learning experience and is sold at such a low price!

I recommend this CD for those who want to learn about classical music and those who know about it but are interested in learning more about the inner workings of an orchestra. You'll learn much useful information. For instance, the Rite of Spring (with that eerie start) is written for bassoon! I never knew a bassoon could sound like that but now I do.

The one complaint I have is the last CD. This deals with the orchestra. I wanted more of a tour of how the orchestra has been used through history up to the present. Instead, it was a tour of how different groups of instruments sound. I thought it could have been better. The other 6 CDs are excellent.

The Best Of Gilbert And Sullivan.......2004-03-15

But these are fine excerpts. Especially appealing is the famous and cheerful "Three Little Maids From School Are We", a trio that imitates Japanese style melody. Most of the Mikado does this, for it was inspired by Japanisme or the new fashion in Victorian England- everything Japanese, from prints to paintings to poetry. Gilbert and Sullivan simply "Japanized" their English operettas. The Finale "For He's Gone To Marry Yum Yum" is an ebullient and pleasant finale. Not featured here is the domineering and powerful Katisha, a figure who stands out in the Mikado.

The H.M.S. Pinafore is Gilbert and Sullivan's most popular work. The sea chanty "We Sail The Ocean Blue" opens the opera with appropriate atmosphere and it seems to fit perfectly with the other scene in which the Captain greets his crew and they sing his praises "My Gallant Crew..I am the Captain Of The Pinafore". A beautiful melody that seems to come out of a romantic Offenbach tune is "I"m Called Little Buttercup". The finale, not featured here, is also very engaging "For He Is An Englishman" which can almost resemble a British national anthem. The Yeomen Of The Guard was Gilbert and Sullivan's "serious opera" eventhough it remains very Savoyard. The plot deals with Tudor England and takes place at the London Tower. "I have a song to sing" makes use of what can be taken for an English ballad of the Renaissance. Trial By Jury, about the eccentric and hilarious activity of a court trial, has a sextet that although different in composition, has the sextet "Che Mi Frena" from Donizetti's Lucia Di Lammermoor in mind. All in all, an excellent recording sure to delight young and old.

--The Music--
This collection includes highlights from five of the most popular Gilbert & Sullivan operettas: The Mikado, HMS Pinafore, The Pirates of Penzance, The Yeoman of the Guard, and Trial by Jury. The arrangements and orchestrations are delightfully energetic and clear; the characterisation and vocal qualities of the leads are perfect for their roles. The haughty if misplaced Lord of the Admiralty has the perfect combination of insecurity and pompous officiousness. The Plaintiff and the Defendant in the Trial are perfectly cast. This is a collection of highlights - at least three but no more than seven songs each, but this gives a good flavour of the music. The recordings on this collection come from complete performances by Mackerras and the WNO.

--Sir Charles Mackerras--
Mackerras is one of the geniuses of the twentieth century musical scene. Having a conducting career that includes the Hamburg Opera, the English National Opera (formerly Sadlers Wells Opera), and the Welsh National Opera (the performers for this piece), he has also conducted major orchestras on the continent of Europe and in the United States. The holder of many major awards and honourary doctorates, he has devoted much time and energy to the preservation and performance of eighteenth and nineteenth century music, as well the restoration of historical musical venues, such as the Estates Theatre in Prague, scene of the original production of Don Giovanni (Mackerras conducted the opera there to commemorate the bicentenary of the death of Mozart).

--Welsh National Opera Orchestra and Chorus--
The seeds of the WNO were planted in Cardiff during World War II by music lovers; the first performances occurred a year after the war's end, with Cavalleria rusticana and Pagliacci on the bill, with Faust the next night. Popular appeal was so great that the WNO was established, later adding choruses in both Cardiff and Swansea. The professional chorus was established in 1973, with a strength that matches the orchestra. They continue an ambitious performance schedule for recording and live events; Mackerras remains the Conductor Emeritus, as the WNO continues under the direction of Carlo Rizzi. The list of awards the WNO has won over the years is staggering - they are a world class institution by any measure.

--Other performers--
Notable singers such as Richard Stuart, Rebecca Evans, Felicity Palmer, John Mark Ainsley and Anne Howells lead the chorus with stunning vocals and clever characterisations of the parts they play. Many (such as Stuart and Evans) play the leading roles across several of the pieces of the disc.

--Liner Notes--
The liner notes give a good introduction and biographical information about Gilbert and Sullivan, as well as synopses of the five pieces presented here. It does not, unfortunately, include any information about Mackerras, the WNO Orchestra and Chorus, or the other special performers. It also does not include the lyrics to the songs. Were the quality of the CD not so great, this might cost it a star in rating.

--Overall Impressions--
I play this CD in my car, in my home and in my office frequently. It is a great sing-along work and a great comedic relief from the stresses of the day. The music is bubbly and clear; the recording quality is excellent and crisp. I recommend this to any Gilbert & Sullivan lover, any fan of musical comedy, opera and operettas, and anyone who delights in good music.

The CD has it's high points:
1. Chicago Symphony (under Solti!) playing Berlioz's Hungarian March (love that trombone excerpt - BAM!)
2. London Philharmonic playing Prokofiev's "The Love for Three Oranges" March
3. Elgar's Pomp and Circumstance No. 1 (also London Philharmonic)

BUT... There's some real stuff on here, too. I must concur with a prior reviewer: FAR TOO MUCH Philip Jones Brass Ensemble. Case in point - Sousa's Stars and Stripes Forever, as played by PJBE is completely devoid of the energy and fire it needs. The trombone countermelody at the end is just NOT THERE (you'll strain to hear it). There's just no way this is right. PBJE is great in their setting, but this is just not it.

Overall, this CD might be a good compilation for the novice listener, but I would recommend the more experienced (or trombonists, like myself) purchase works by individual symphonies that include the music you desire - a more expensive, yet more expressive alternative.
