Reaction to Lonely Planet Watching Wildlife Galapagos.......2007-05-15

In anticipation of an upcoming trip to the Galapagos, I looked at a bunch of books before deciding to purchase this one from Lonely Planet. I love the way the book is organized, taking each island and explaining the unique features of that island. After that, the animals and birds are listed so that you can cross reference everything. In addition, there are lots of helpful travel tips in the beginning chapters. Most importantly, the pictures are fantastic!!

Perfect Format.......2007-04-19

This was hands-down the best wildlife guide we used when visiting the Galapagos Islands.

It's divided by islands but also has sections about the types of mammals, fish, birds, and reptiles for further, in-depth review.

Because visitors reach the islands one-at-a-time, in designated areas and trails, the book is organized exactly to the physical approaches. Really reads quickly, and to the point. Locations totally accurate about nesting areas and sea lion hangouts, but also describes the best geological landmarks. Will help you with itinerary design, with logging your sightings, remembering your trip, and help with virtually all species identification.

Possibly the most user-friendly book LP ever published.

Lonely Planet Books er illicit bootleg version, 'A Stranger Still'? These last two feature hardly sparkling audience recordings and are unavailable and not to be purchased even if they were as they are illegal. Which is a shame as, on the latter, you get a virtually complete K Group set, with tracks such as 'The Siren Song', 'Just Good Friends', 'Losing Faith in Words', amongst other classics, unavailable elsewhere, not even on this, The Margin + , on Hammill's Fie!, the remastered, crystalline version which strikes a balance between the original official recordings on CD1; and audaciously steals back ( and quite right too) from the bootleggers, virtually all the illegal 'The Secret Asteroid Jungle' recording to make up CD2. By the way, for the completist, it restores, albeit in a different version to the original LP version, 'The Second Hand'. It's a secret asteroid jungle out there, Margin fans. Hammill also adds some illuminating and atmospheric liner 'your correspondent on the spot' notes that take us back to the German beat-club space-time continuum in which the K Group performed...

Amazingly Contemporary................2006-10-23

One of Hammill's many interestingly creative periods, The Margin represents his K period 82-85 with Nic Potter, Guy Ellis and VDGG original Guy Evans, one of my very favorite periods that produced studio efforts "Enter K" and "Patience". The Margin follows on as a representation of the magic they produced together in a live setting.
Recently reissued as a two disc expanded set (2002) with additional liner notes from Hammill this is a must own set for any collection that contains VDGG or Hammill material.
Upon revsiting in it's new format I'm taken back at how amazing this set really is with an over the wall version of "Future Now", the impactfull and reflective "Porton Down" while the 20+ minutes of "Flight" from "A Black Box" is stunning.
A must own piece of music that never dates by a truly inventive and creative soul that refuses to give into the fame machine.
Awesome stuff experienced by the few who know.......................

Not the best intro to his music; essential for Hammill fans.......2002-10-26

The players: the great HAMMILL on vox and piano. Extraordinaire ex Van der graaf drummer guy evans, Nic potter, also former VDGG on bass, and a very good ex- Stranglers axe man. Their chemistry is perfect and the material is way deep. The sound is that of a very acceptable remastered, clean, Bootleg.

Good Overview, Not Very Detailed.......2007-01-10

This was a good overview for our two week hiking trip in southern France. Because the book covers the entire country, there isn't much detail and only a couple of walks per region. I found the book to be mostly factual though a section on bus routes in the Gorges du Verdon was incorrect--we ended up having to wait an extra day to take a bus that the book said would be available. Overall we had an excellent trip, but really this book is more about exploring options than final planning. For the real work of getting from Point A to Point B, we relied on the French language materials we found in the country (I speak and read intermediate French).

If day walks are your thing . . ........2002-10-02

I am currently planning my walking holiday in France, so I am trying to learn as much as I can before I arrive. I found this book to be helpful in as far as it dealt with practical matters of conditions in France; such as visas, telephones and doctors. It also gave a good indication of the attractions that walkers will find in France on a regional basis.

I felt, however, that for a country famous for its very long distance trails, this book had an unhappy focus on short, often single day, walks. To be fair, it dealt in detail with the gruelling "GR20" trail in Corsica, but that was the only real endurance walk that it looked at. Given that these walks are my focus, I found this book to be something of a disappointment.
