An abiding ambition of Leonard Bernstein as composer was to write the Great American Opera. Indeed his own recordings of West Side Story and Candide in the last decade of his life, with their rosters of high-caliber singers, were intended in part to display the larger, quasi-operatic scope of these works. And right from the start, Bernstein's savvy instinct was to create a musical language that would integrate lively vernacular American idioms, as his early one-act opera Trouble in Tahiti (1952) demonstrates. This biting satire--to the composer's own libretto--of a marriage falling to pieces against the backdrop of the vacuous suburban life promulgated by '50s advertisements is little more than a series of vignettes. But the compact score is exuberantly inventive and wide ranging, from its parody of AM radio jingles-cum-Greek chorus to its wistfully lyrical depiction of a faded love. In this reissue of a recording made in 1973, Bernstein emphasizes the jazzy, rhythmic swing of the former--with its fascinating anticipations of West Side Story--as well as the poignant oasis of yearning melody in Dinah's scene at the psychiatrist's office, which would serve as the kernel for his later full-length opera on the same characters, A Quiet Place. Nancy Williams brings to life a convincingly vulnerable Dinah, and Julian Patrick's bass-baritone booms with just the right attitude of defensive machismo in Sam's gym scene "There's a law." The disc also includes the short 1946 "choreographic essay" Facsimile. This is the composer in his "age of anxiety" mode; its hauntingly scored depiction of loneliness at the core makes an excellent companion piece. --Thomas May
Customer Reviews:
A great find for anyone who loves Bernstein's musicals.......2005-10-17
By 1952 Leonard Bernstein had already finished a triumphant decade. His Sym. #1 had won the Pulitzer Prize, he had made a spectcular debut with the NY Phil., his ballet Fancy Free and the spin-off musical derived form it, On the Town, were smash hits. So the amazon reviewer isn't on the mark to call Trouble in Tahiti an early piece, nor is he right to say that Bernstein had a lifelong ambition to write the great American opera.
Trouble in Tahiti is jazzy and colloquial, its melodies and rhythms familiar to anyone who knows Bernstein's musc from the Forties, or the musical Wonderful Town that would follow it the next year. The work is operatic only in the sense that the voices of the two leads are more operatic than Broadway, but not by much. The trio that serves as Greek chorus sings in a parodistic pop style, half Andrews Sisters, half Manhattan Transfer.
The libretto is a bit embarrassing in its soap-opera simplicity, but in this case "dated" is a synonym for nostalgic--the score is full of tunes that evoke the immediate post-war period. The jazzy ballet filler, Facsimile, is just as winning. There was a classic performance in mono with Beverly Wolff in the lead that collectors prize, but this later stereo remake is almost as good. I've loved this minor work since I saw a college production in 1965 and return to it whenever I want to rekindle fond memories.
Wow! That's good!.......2000-05-08
The title should speak for itself. I don't just give out 4s and 5s to most any CD. I expect much and I got much from this CD. This is one of the most passionate and moving pieces of music I have ever allowed to try the test of my ear and emotions. The vocalists are wonderful. The climax is a work of art. The finale to the first half of this work is tear jerking. The opera deals with a married couple who are in the pits of their marriage. And unlike many people today, this couple wants to fix the marriage. It was very clever how Bernstein had them go through the entire opera with just the two of them as characters. The jazz trio adds a lot to the mood, beginning, and 'intermission'. The opera was so great I spent so long on the internet trying to find the sequel, Quiet Place, which is on here but is sold out. I wrote the internet address of the company who has it in my review of the CD here since I just know you will love this music. I'm so attached to Trouble in Tahiti I have not even really listened to the other work on the CD.
A fantastic recording of an unfortunately overlooked piece.......2000-01-27
Leonard Bernstein was far more prolific than most people know; many think of him only in connection with West Side Story and On the Waterfront. Trouble in Tahiti, one of his earliest works, deserves a place among his better-known work. Although an opera, it never leans on recitative or pretentious bellowing. There is an amazing diversity in the score; one number is a swingy, scat-filled trio, another an aria of haunting beauty, another a hilarious evocation of escapist cinema. The liner notes excellently compare it with a Mahler symphony in the way it juxtaposes such different moods to such great effect. The libretto may seem to some a bit naive, but it is amazing to see the way Bernstein destroyed 1950's cliches of happy family life before they were even cliches! The cast is perfect: Julian Parick has the perfect resonant voice and arrogance; Nancy Williams switches from anger to wistful despair to high comedy with remarkable facility; and the trio is wonderful, especially the ethereal-voiced Antonia Butler. Facsimile, a "choreographic essay" on virtually the same subject (isolation and broken relationships) is truly an excellent companion. A great CD.

Not such a great sampling...........2001-01-21
Some of these songs are really stretching for a romantic mood. Especially some of the On the Town songs. It's not that they're not good though....All of this music is from other CDs that have been already been released. Don't limit yourself to just these songs. Go ahead and buy the other recordings. Deutsche Grammophon did the On the Town recording along with West Side Story and Candide. I'd recommend a different recording of West Side Story though. The one of Wonderful Town is the kinda newly released complete version of the musical. It's a good but expensive one. Also, this recording left out some of THE greatest love songs from Peter Pan (Dream of Me, Peter Peter), Trouble in Tahiti (Well of all people, There is A Garden, Finale), 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue (Seena, Lud's Wedding), and Quiet Place (There is so much, too much). I think this recording, though okay, is a stumbling block to finding out about the real Bernstein saga of musicals. And if you are still getting this recording, the sound quality is really good. West Side Story is done by the masters of the opera so they sing it that way. Candide is operetic too, but then again it is an operetta. That's about all I have to say on this recording.
nice but operatic.......2000-02-23
This is a nice collection of Bernstein miscellany. Note however that the West Side Story, On the Town, and Candide are the "operatic" versions, with Te Kanawa and Carreras, Von Stade and Hampson, and Jerry Hadley, respectively. Bernstein conducts WSS and Candide and Tilson Thomas OTT. The surprise is the bits from Wonderful Town, which was recorded on JAY, not DG like the others. Featuring Ron Raines and Rebecca Luker, it's probably the most authentically "Broadway" of this set.

No, No is my song!.......2006-11-10
This was the first record that introduced me to the sax playing of George Howard, 'No No' was the jam!, George was one of the early 'smooth jazz' artists to get airplay on main R&B stations with this cd, sounded good then and now!

The First Time I Saw George Howard In Concert {1989, Las Vegas} I Was Hooked!!! From That Time On, I Have Been A Fan.A Nice Place To Be Was One Of His Smoothest Albums.I Still Enjoy Listing To It From Time To Time. It Is Not For Us To Know Why He was Called Home At The Penical Of His Career. His Music However Is Ours To Cherish For A Lifetime. I Hope Eveyone Appreciates What A Great Phenom George Haward Really Was.
About Time.......2005-01-06
I FINALLY FOUND this album on CD. I have played the cassette so much that it barely puts out anything at all. I have all of the collection from George, may he rest in peace. This was the last to have on CD. I have been looking for several years to no avail, and finally I have one. Thanks AMAZON.
Smooth Jazz before its time.......2003-03-23
This cd was very smooth before Smooth Jazz became a definition for today's smoother sounds. Some of the sweeter sounds are "Jade's World, "Sweetest Taboo", "Spenser For Hire" from the television show of the same title. I vote for "Stanley's Groove" as the funkiet on this cd.

A great "first step" to the magic of "The Great White Way".......2006-11-26
With the Thanksgiving passing of songwriter Betty Comden, I recalled that I had, in my album collection, this album, not just featuring her songs but Comden singing on "Carried Away" and "Some Other Time" from the Tony-award-winning "New York." Two other songs from the play are featured, culled from a 1960 recording.
This compilation has some of the best of Broadway, not just the songs but the performers as well. Familiar names like Boris Karloff, the legendary Rosalind Russell, Nancy Walker, Chita Rivera, and Carol Lawrence are showcased in various selections from the likes of "Peter Pan," "Trouble in Tahiti," "Wonderful Town," "Candide," "1600 Pennsylvania Avenue," and, in this writer's opinion, the best musical in the history of the stage, "West Side Story."
The liner notes provide brief but insightful descriptions of the various plays, including an introduction from Comden and her longtime collaborator Adolph Green, also heard on the album.
The music is definitely Bernstein with his uniquely American style, coupled with Old World influences.

Leonard Bernstein's New York is a cornucopia of tongue-in-cheek wit, unabashed romanticism, big-city loneliness, and intellectual irony. His well-known orchestral brilliance is beautifully represented under the stellar conducting of Eric Stern, but his underappreciated talents as a songwriter are what shine, elevating this recording to magic. The cast of American theater's best includes Mandy Patinkin wonderfully indulging his comic side; Judy Blazer and Donna Murphy, the shiniest lights on Broadway, demonstrating their extensive range as singing actresses; Audra McDonald making the difficult sound easy; and Richard Muenz and Dawn Upshaw singing elegantly. Most unforgettably pleasing are the trios "Ya Got Me" and "What A Waste." A great tribute to Bernstein's theater works. --Barbara Eisner Bayer
Customer Reviews:
Disappointing.......2007-03-13
I agree that this is a great collection. But I have to wonder: Am I the only one who got a bum copy of the CD? The songs are all mixed up on my copy, as in, most of the tracks are mislabeled: "A Quiet Girl" is really "Tonight", The Balcony Scene, printed as "Tonight" is really "Somewhere". The list goes on.
So, who do I kvetch to? I'd like a copy that isn't a complete mishmash.
The Feel of New York.......2007-01-09
Having spent most of my working years in NYC, I felt this CD brought the city to me. Bernstein has allways been a favorite.
The next stop once you've heard the originals.......2007-01-09
As a tribute to Bernstein on Broadway, this CD is hard to beat. All the singers are stars but of a generation, ro two, beyond the originals. Naturally here's been a change of style, and these renditions are more knowing, sophisticated, and at times ironic than the originals. On their own, Donna Murphy, Dawn Upshaw, and Mandy Patinkin, among others, are masters of their craft, but I hope anyone who loves LB will also seek out the original cast albums for all of his musicals, or the clesest one can get (On the Town was remade in the Fifties). Those recordings cast a unique spel, but the next stop is this marvelous CD.
Bernstein's New York, it's a wonderful town!.......2002-01-15
And speaking of "Wonderful Town," it's so nice to hear music from this least appreciated of Bernstein's musicals. "What a Waste," "A Quiet Girl" and Audra McDonald's enchanting "A Little Bit in Love" have never sounded better. Donna Murphy burns the house down with the torchy "Ain't Got No Tears Left," and has fun with Patinkin and Blazer on the raucous "Ya Got Me." "One Hand, One Heart" sung by Dawn Upshaw and Richard Muenz is movingly rendered, as is Patinkin's wonderful delivery of an all-time Bernstein favorite, "Some Other Time." My only comlaint? Where is "I Can Cook Too?" A terrific recording.
Great CD BUT..........2000-07-02
I loved this CD, but there was some things that kept it fromgetting four stars. First Mandy Patkin, I loved him in Sunday in The Park With George, also I have a CD of him singing yiddish songs all good, but in this CD I just don't like him. Like in the song "Come Up To My Place" I didn't like his voice and I never could quite see him as the character for that song. Also I would have liked to see (well actually "hear") some more of the dance numbers or overtures, I realize the main point of the CD was all the singers they put together, but the real highlight of the CD for me was the sections from Fancy Free, and Ballet At The Village Vortex from Wonderful Town. Also I liked "One Hand One Heart" a lot. Overall I would get this CD if you like Bernstein or any of these musicals, it is good listen, just not outstanding.

Smoothjazz.com Review.......2006-06-16
I'm delighted to be the bearer of great news! Sax man Andy Snitzer, whose impeccable musical credentials are literally awe inspiring (currently a member of Paul Simon's touring band, and has toured with the Rolling Stones, released three important Smooth Jazz discs in the late 90's...and that's just a quick overview) is back in the Smooth jazz arena with his just-released, remixed, re-mastered gem from 1999, SOME QUIET PLACE. It was a great album then, and it's even better now, with the first radio single, "Passion Play" added as a new track. It's a collaboration with guitarist Chuck Loeb, who's also featured. Andy's also got Bob James, Chris Botti and Philippe Saisse guesting on this album, so it's definitely star-studded. Since he's been touring in a support capacity and working as a much-sought-after and skillful music editor of late, you might have forgotten about his Smooth Jazz sax work. Let me remind you that his classic hit "You've Changed" is still in virtually every Smooth Jazz station's library to this day, along with several others, including "Restless," his great duet with Bob James. The tunes on SOME QUIET PLACE sound fresh and new and every bit as captivating as we remember Andy's work from the mid to late 90's. I, for one, am excited about the new release, and highly recommend it to you. It's going to be another of Andy's Smooth Jazz staples! ~SCOTT O'BRIEN

The fundamental things apply as time goes by...............2002-03-27
Leonard Bernstein was a legend in his own time and the music world is less for his absence. But here is a chance to sample the spectrum of this 20th century wonder. From the uncommonly American sound of West Side Story (Symphonic Dances) to the gentle, brooding introspection of Arias and Barcarolles not unlike this composer's mentor Gustav Mahler, we have on one CD a taste of why Bernstein will live beyond his lifetime. Gratefully these works are performed by consummate artists: Michael Tilson Thomas, Frederica von Stade, Thomas Hampson, London Symphony Orchestra. Add this mixture of late life esoterica and prime life showmanship to your collection of Bernstein's many recordings of the symphonic literature and you'll have a glimpse of the fundamental things........
Fascinating examples of Bernstein's later work.......2000-01-27
Arias and Barcarolles was one of Leonard Bernstein's last compositions; in fact, he fiddled with it for much of the last years of his life. A series of loosely connected musical vignettes, it is a fascinating exploration of dark, atonal music he hinted at constantly in all of his earlier work. Fascinating it is, but i cant really say its very enjoyable to listen to. The Love Duet, a fantastically existential song, is a real gem, and Little Smary and Mr. and Mrs. Webb Say Goodnight are also wonderful pieces, made all the better by the performances of Von Stade and Hampson. However, like all atonal music, other tracks get grating, and are worth listening to only as curiosities. The A Quiet Place Suite is another matter. The opera was a late expansion of Trouble in Tahiti, one of his best early pieces; it is labored in the extreme. (Stephen Sondheim once said of this opera that Bernstein had a bad case of "important-itis.") The only passages with any distinction are the ones from the earlier work. Also, this suite is a poorly orchestrated representation of the full score. Then the symphonic dances . . . it is painfully obvious that Bernstein didnt conduct this one. The tempos are all over the map, and the miking is terrible (in the Mambo, the tam-tams overpower the brass section at certain points.) The suite in the reisuue of the original score is far better. All in all, this CD is a valuable one to have; although not very enjoyable, it is very very interesting.

But not for In Flames. Reccomended instead:
Lunar Strain - Reroute to Remain, Come Clarity.
ughh, what is this?.......2006-12-21
When people whine and moan about In Flames new stuff, this song instantly comes to mind.
Not only does it sound popish, with keyboards and whatnots, but it is absolutely unlike anything In Flames have done. People who like Taproot and other *hitty bands will like this garbage, while fans of melodeath should check out Lunar Strain, Jester Race, or even the new album Come Clarity.
