At long last, Minnie Riperton fans have a collection that does the extraordinary vocalist justice. This two-CD set is a gorgeous testament to her talents--her breathtaking, five-and-a-half octave range, her incredible versatility, and the exquisite, inimitable artistry Riperton brought to everything she did throughout her all-too-brief career, which ended tragically in 1979 when she succumbed to breast cancer at the age of 31. Though best known for her 1974 chart-topper, "Lovin' You," Riperton had a remarkable stylistic range that is showcased on this 35-track collection, which includes previously hard-to-find material such as "Lonely Girl" (a melodramatic ballad of puppy love that provides a glimpse of a young Minnie's already-impassioned vocal delivery), and tracks from her stint as a singer for psychedelic rock outfit Rotary Connection. All of Riperton's most popular tunes are here, but the collection's rewards come in discovering the singer in new ways: as a funkateer ("Young, Willing and Able"), a seductress ("Can You Feel What I'm Saying"), and a samba queen ("Could It Be I'm in Love"). And inspired collaborations with legends such as guitarist Jose Feliciano ("Light My Fire") provide delightful portraits of Riperton's innate musicality and her ear for improvisation. --Sylvia W. Perfection.......2006-02-17
I've been a fan of Minnie Ripperton for many years. I just recently lost someone I love to breast cancer and one of Minnie Ripperton's songs came to mind. "Return to Forever" is perhaps one of Minnie's most under-rated songs. I encourage everyone who has this song to close your eyes and listen. Everything from the lyrics to the very last note will grab your heart. For me this was her goodbye song, and it is truly a work of art.
R.I.P.Minnie, R.I.P........2006-01-30
Before Mariah Carey, before Whitney Houston, and before Lisa Fisher. This is a true angel who sadlley got away from us, and had so much talent and such a beautiful voice, this is for anyone interested in one of the best singers in the world, no doubt.
What A Voice!.......2005-11-02
This two-cd collection on Minnie is a great overview of her career! No need to go into how wonderful Minnie's voice is or her incredible range.... for those just getting in to her or long time fans(like myself)who have waited for years to have more Minnie available on CD, this collection a must have!!.
Baby, this love I have..for Minnie Riperton!!.......2005-04-13
Years ago, I only knew Minnie Riperton for one song..Yep, you guessed it, Loving You..However, I was listening to the radio one day and I heard Inside My Love..Thats when I picked up the greatest hits collection from Capitol Records..I was content with that, until one day, I heard the original version of Memory Lane on the radio (not the shortened version that they have on the Capitol records album)..Well I saw Petals in the record store and thought, what the hell, I might as well buy it..Im so glad I did..I was stuck on her after listening to the first greatest hits album I brought, but she became one of my influences after listening to Petals..I get sad sometimes because she's not alive, but Im content with having her powerful music and hearing her powerful voice..So let me run down some of my fave tracks:
1st Disc: Les Fleur, Seeing you this way, Reasons, Take a little trip, Loving you and Everytime he comes around
2nd Disc: Perfect Angel, Adventures in paradise, Young Willing and Able, Baby this love I have, Can you feel what Im saying, Inside my love, and Memory Lane..
It would really do her music an injustice if I tried to write too descriptive of a review because you just have to hear for yourself what this woman is all about..You can feel the love, passion and sweetness in her voice..She is one of the greatest who ever done it, no matter the record sales of other popular but extremely untalented artists..Forget Mariah, if you want to hear a high note, listen to the originator..This is some of the greatest soul music I've ever heard..Minnie Riperton is a legend..I love you Minnie!!!
Can You Feel What I am Saying..........2004-08-20
I guess you could say this is more of a tribute than a review. This lady "Mrs. Minnie Riperton" has touched my life in so many ways. I just love her sultry voice and feel what she is saying with each and every note and word. This lady has incredible style and talent. When others are gone Minnie will always be around. She is my angel and my inspiration. Anyone who is not familiar with this talented artist has missed one of God's greatest gifts. This cd will transport you to her world where only peace exist. We miss you Minnie but we know that your love and words will forever live on. Peace

A vastly overlooked band from the Minneapolis.......2004-12-17
Zuzu's Petals was one of many bands from Minneapolis I have felt that was vastly overlooked while crappier bands like Soul Asylum got more attention. I first discovered Zuzu's Petals when I was a freshman in college in Iowa (of all places). I came across the band's debut album "When No One's Looking" at a local record store, seeking something that was not part of the mainstream. What I heard was a pop-punk fan's dream come true. "When No One's Looking" is chockful of pop-punk melodies but maintains a less than polished sound. Zuzu's Petals reminded me of Mazzy Star but with an edgier sound. This girl band from Minneapolis may not have had the raw power of the more famous girl band from Minneapolis Babes in Toyland, but they certainly had a lot of talent. The album starts off with the irresistably infectious "Cinderella's Daydream". The song immediately sets the tone for the rest of the album which is all fun and catchy. Pop-punk fans today would probably dig this album although I seriously doubt it since it lacks the pretentions and whininess of today's pop-punk bands today.

Beautiful record.......2007-04-10
This is one of the most underappreciated albuns of 1990's. Great songs, catchy chorus, fine melodies and creative lines. Following the tradition from Mineapolis rock. It rules!
Mediocre at best!.......2005-08-14
I grabbed this one out of the "SALE" bin and because they had a HÜSKER DÜ cover on a tribute album, so I assumed if this all girl band played at one fifth of HÜSKER DÜ's talent, then it would make my day. Unfortunately, this wasn't the case. ZUZU'S PETALS was one of the many faceless punk-grunge bands that saturated the market after NIRVANA's success. This is a TWIN TONE release, the legendary Minneapolis label responsible for bringing us SOUL ASYLUM and THE REPLACEMENTS. Why they ever signed this trio is beyond my belief. The sound? Well, this band plays like an ultra watered down version of BABES IN TOYLAND. Maybe these chicks were aiming for a poppier sound but with the vocal styling of Laurie Lindeen (or Coleen Elwood; they both sing)is as flat as it gets. There's not a hook in sight nor a memorable riff. Only the opener, "Do Not" sounds like this could've been a far better album, but unfortunately it's not.
I'm sorry to write this down because I was actually very much into all those post-hardcore, grunge bands (NIRVANA, TAD, MELVINS, BABES IN TOYLAND and yes, even HOLE!!!), but ZUZU'S PETALS' "The Music Of Your Life" is a substandard release with very few hooks to grab you.

Album Description
Madeleine Shapiro is a recognized figure in the field of contemporary music as a cellist, producer of chamber music concerts, and as a teacher. She has appeared as a solo recitalist throughout the United States, Europe and Latin America. She has a strong commitment to performing works by living composers and has a repertoire of over 40 solo works by composers from the Americas, as well as Europe and Asia. The chamber ensemble ModernWorks, founded by Madeleine in 1997, presents an annual New York City concert series and has been heard yearly on the New York Consortium for New Music's prestigious Sonic Boom Festival and at other New York venues, including a series at the Museum of Arts and Design, as well as on NPR. She teaches at the Mannes College of Music in New York City, where she directs the Contemporary Music Ensemble and teaches classes in the performance practice of contemporary music. She writes: "My love for electro-acoustic works began as an undergraduate at The State University of New York at Stony Brook where it was suggested by the eminent violinist Paul Zukofsky that I learn Mario Davidovsky's Synchronisms No. 3, my first experience with a work by a living composer. My subsequent performance of this piece led to a life-long commitment to both works by living composers, and the electro-acoustic medium. The pieces on this CD were chosen for their wide range of musical expression, and for the variety of electronic technology they employ. Since 1964, when the Davidovsky was written, the developments in technology have been astounding. As a performer, I have found this revolution exhilarating, and embrace the expressive and coloristic possibilities that such technology has afforded us."
Customer Reviews:
Fabulous CD.......2005-03-29
With this CD Madeleine Shapiro has solidified her reputation as a leading proponent of cutting edge new classical writing for the cello. While most cellist dabble with electronics, here Ms. Shapiro embraces it. The pieces are facinating, evocative and original and Ms. Shapiro's execution is excellent. This CD should be required listening for composers writng for the cello. Thank god people are still making CDs like this.
A heavenly marriage of acoustic and electronic elements.......2005-03-25
In addition to having a lot of sensational music, this outstanding recording shows the huge range of expression from today's composers. I've been fortunate to hear Madeleine Shapiro in live performance a number of times in New York, and she definitely knows her electronics (and needless to say, her cello).
The opener, "The Song of Songs" by Karen Tanaka, would be easy for almost anyone to like, even those not normally inclined toward this type of repertoire. Over a mellifluous drone with what sound like shimmering bells, Shapiro's soulful cello line grows ever more intense before the work's quiet ending.
The works by Jukka Tiensuu, Ge Gan-ru and Kaija Saariaho are all notable for using the instrument in unusual ways -- knocking on the wood, bowing near the bridge, and other ear-opening techniques, and one can't help but be impressed by Shapiro's consistent accuracy and passion in these difficult scores. The classic Davidovsky "Synchronisms No. 3" might be the most "modernist" item on the menu, but even it sounds warmer in Shapiro's hands than it might in others.
And Shapiro saves a stunning example of Michael Gordon's work, "Industry", for the very last. Gordon's rugged use of repeated double-stops will either wear you out, or hypnotize you -- for me it was definitely the latter -- and Shapiro's prodigious technique will leave you exhilarated. Throughout the recording, Shapiro is as masterful a guide as anyone could want in this repertoire, in a well-conceived combination of litte-known works and modern classics.
The CD was beautifully recorded by Adrian Carr, with a nice balance between the cello timbre and the electronic sounds -- neither one overwhelms the other -- and Albany has preserved all of this with a beautifully designed package and cover art (the liner notes credit Christine Chagnon). Don't miss the clever photograph on the back, too, in which Shapiro's cello appears to be flying off into space.

Album Description
Harry Partch's compositions of the 1940sand to some extent his work in generalhave remained until recently an unwritten chapter in the history of American music. And yet it was these very piecesthe collection of four works he would later collectively entitle The Waywardthat brought him to the attention of the New York musical world. His concert of these pieces for the League of Composers (April 22, 1944) established for him a small but permanent reputation as a musical maverick who had wandered off well-worn tracks and had developed a sort of lateral extension of his art, independently of any of the main circles of American music.
The musical starting point of the compositions of The Wayward is the inflections and rhythms of everyday American speech. From the beginnings of his mature output in 1930 Partch had been devoted to what he called "the intrinsic music of spoken words," and these four works capture something of the spontaneous musicality of the conversations of the hoboes he befriended during the Depression. In their original form these pieces used only the small collection of instruments Partch had built or customized by 1943: Adapted Viola, Adapted Guitar, Chromelodeon, and Kithara. The versions recorded here are all later reworkings, sometimes with only small changes (as in the case of San Francisco), and sometimes involving a substantial amount of recomposition (as in the case of U.S. Highball).
The final work on this disc dates from twenty years later than the compositions of The Wayward, and represents one of the high points of Partch's later instrumental idiom. And on the Seventh Day Petals Fell in Petaluma was composed in Petaluma, California, in March-April 1964, and revised at various times and places until the completion of the final copy of the score in San Diego in October 1966. It marks a radical departure from the theater works he had written at the University of Illinois in the early 1960s, and shows a renewed concentration on technical innovation and on fusing his activities as composer and instrument-builder within the context of a single composition. Newly remastered.

Album Description
Sound collage and electronics which harken back to the post-industrial sounds of Hafler Trio, Nocturnal Emissions, Nurse With Wound, and the 'cassette underground' of the mid-80s. The recordings on the present CD, ?A thousand petals,? were obtained from shortwave radio, travels through Turkey, and surgical reports. The titles of each piece are phrases that came to the artist in dreams.

Disturbing Electronica.......2005-01-11
Maenad is dark and functions perfectly as background music whether you're working on the computer or just relaxing with a good book. All 4 tracks are exquisite but my favorite is #3. Enjoy.
listening wind.......2002-02-06
This is music for the wee hours; after the world around you has gone to sleep and you can sit silently, listening to the humming of the darker hours of the night. Listening to this disc is almost like eavesdropping on yourself; secretly exploring your more private, forbidden thought processes. Like turning a radio dial buried deep in your subconscious, tuned to the spectrum of existent frequencies and brainwaves alike, and picking up signals from exotic countries, late-night talk shows, surveillance cameras, short-wave radio, and the buzzing of near dormant nervous systems.
