5 out of 5 stars Useful and user-friendly.......2001-08-05

The books in the newer series of Lonely Planet phrasebooks are all excellent, because the authors make the assumption that the reader is an educated and literate individual, who wants to know something more about the target language than just a list of supposedly common phrases. There is a tremendous amount of information packed into this handy little book. Contrary to what another reviewer said, the book makes a very clear distinction between Hindi and Urdu words. The sections on script and grammar are well done. Overall, it is probably the best Hindi/Urdu phrasebook available.

5 out of 5 stars Great compact reference.......2001-02-06

    Very helpful pocket reference.

1 out of 5 stars Do not go for this one........2000-08-09

This phrasebook does not make clear which words are Hindi and which words are Urdu. Not recommended for the beginner.

    4 out of 5 stars A very useful phrasebook.......2000-02-03

This phrasebook is excellent. It provides both Nagari and Urdu orthography. The little dictionary in the end is very exhaustive and ready-made sentences cover a wide range of needs.

        Lonely Planet Books

Lonely Planet Books bum can certainly rival the best of Eno's previous three albums: "Backwater" and "kurt's Rejoinder" match any highlight off "Warm Jets" or "Tiger Mountain", while "Here he Comes" and "Spider and I" easily match "Another Green World" in pure ethereal aesthetic. Moreover, everything on this album is quite catchy, and almost certainly mood-inducing. Just get it already!

4 out of 5 stars Man in transition........2005-06-14

Brian Eno's "Before and After Science", his last song-based album until the about-to-be-released (June, 2005) "Another Day on Earth" is in many ways the album you would hope it would be, reflective of his past, pointing in some ways to the future, very much texture-oriented music. On the other hand, while it has its moments, it fails to capture the immediacy of "Here Come the Warm Jets" or the beauty of "Discreet Music", but its still a great listen.

The album is really two sides, the first being more energetic, the second being a bit more ambient in feel. On the first side, there are three things that immediately draw you in-- the first is an overt use of vocal harmonies-- Eno's vocals are almost always in a harmony form with two or three voices singing the line ("No One Receiving", melodic pop song "Here He Comes"). The second is bassist Percy Jones, whose playing on a few of the tracks, in particular "Kurt's Rejoinder", is nothing short of astonishing. The third is the use of space-- look no further than standout "Energy Fools the Magician", where the four piece (Eno, Jones, drummer Phil Collins back when he was a drummer and guitarist Fred Frith) manipulate space as a fifth instrument to amazing effect.

The second side is much more in line with the ambient work of Eno's most recent albums-- a overwhelming feel of haunted ambient with vocals dominates. The entire side is full of fantastic material, from the haunted "Julie With..." to the lyrically brilliant and dark "Spider and I".

Overall, its a rewarding album that finds an artist caught in between forms, but even in transition, his brilliance shines through. Recommended.

4 out of 5 stars Another Eno World.......2005-03-24

The last in Eno's series of quirky, unique albums from the 70's before he moved totally into ambient music and expored his "rock" side only through production of other artists.

Like the titles that came before, Before and After Science finds Eno stringing together a series of offbeat numbers ranging from rock to pop to ambient and everything in between. This record was sequenced with most of the more ambient numbers at the end, unlike Another Green World's free admixture of styles. I personally liked the AGW way better, but fortunately we have the option these days of programming the songs in any order we want, so problem solved.

Eno's star-studded array of collaborators had become as legendary as his skewed sense of pop by this point, with everyone from Phil Manzanera to Phil Collins to Robert Fripp sitting in on this one. They were Eno veterans, but Eno's concurrent interest in German art-rock brings Can's Jaki Liebzeit and Moebius and Roedelius from Cluster to the table on Before and After Science.

My favourite moments: The atmospheric but too-short "Energy Fools the Magician" with the Brand X rhythm section of Percy Jones and Collins, with Fred Frith. The frantic new wave single "King's Lead Hat" (an anagram of Talking Heads) with Fripp. And all of the old "side 2" especially the beautiful "By This River" with Cluster. The piano has haunted me since I first heard it way-back-when, and I enjoy playing it myself. The closing "Spider and I" summons up a massive wall of synths-n-bass, and Eno's resigned vocal is quite fitting as he was about to leave the rock world (as a performer) for a very, very long time.

I have the earlier CD edition and to tell you the truth I don't notice anything radically different about the remaster, so the cheaper original CD might be a good bargain unless you're a real audiophile.

        Album Description

50 Minutes Later is the new album from Roxy Music legend Phil Manzanera. It transports the listener, including them in Manzanera's rock and roll journey, spanning psychedelic London to Buenos Aires and out into the stratosphere, embroidered within a musical context that is always full of invention. Manzanera's signature guitar style, at times richly textured and at times explosive, is very much in evidence and perfectly complements his storytelling vocals. 50 Minutes Later features contributions from fellow Roxy Music members Paul Thompson and Andy Mackay plus Robert Wyatt and Brian Eno.

4 out of 5 stars Phil colors outside the lines...........2005-12-30

....and this is a good thing. I almost always buy Phil's releases, part of my never-ending love of Roxy Music and it's spinoffs. However, Phil's releases have been spotty for my tastes: some are great, others just okay. This one, however, is a pleasant surprise. First off, let me add to the accolades here for "Enotonik Bible Black". This 10-minute song alone is worth the price. Phil has made a brilliant choice here: get the geniuses on board (Brian Eno, Robert Wyatt, Paul Thompson, etc.) and let them go nuts. Don't get me wrong, the other songs on this record are good and you will enjoy them, but that bonus track proves to me that Manzanera is--while not the best guitarist or songwriter in the world (and come on, hard-core fans....we must all admit this to be true)--a great collaborator and, on this record at least, the marvelous planet around which all these bright stars have chosen to orbit. In other words, this record is a wonderful achievement of which he should be proud.

5 out of 5 stars Reminiscent and outside the lines.......2005-11-06

For those that know and love Phil Manzanera as the heart and strings of Roxy Music and those who appreciate new and exciting music as an art form...

50 Minutes Later is a work that draws you into a feverish rhythmic development with a complementary temporal experience.

"Revolution" invites the listener into the melodic and instrumental question of why - everything is at odds? The lyrics and guitar melody create a tension that challenges you to listen, get involved... and before you know it you are rocking to the rhythm one of many great guitar solos that lace this CD.

The next cut then flashes back to another time of happy psychedelia described in the story and rhythm of "Technicolor UFO".

The rhythm becomes a comfortable sense of woozy movement with the welcome intrusion of a rock beat. Throughout you are pleasantly surprised by Phil's style for painting vivid pictures.

"That's All I Know" has the warmth of a love song and is followed by the Latin beat of "50 Minutos Mas Tarde" and "Desparecido."

Phil takes you further into each development through the use of spoken language and sound effects that inject a visual experience of movement developing into rhythm.

50 Minutes Later transcends time, culture, and space. Phil's avant garde guitar style keeps the listener on edge. You can feel the instrument writhe. The lyrics are a contemporary reflection without being too nostalgic.

"Dusza," "One Step," and "Swimming" are a comfortable experience, when suddenly "Bible Black" wakes from an uneasy dream with more questions, challenges, and tension. And answers with "Till the End of the Line".

The crescendo and the "piéce de resistance" is "Enotonik Bible Black" which launches you into outer space and the culmination of the experimental and inspirational style threaded through the context of the entire work.

50 Minutes Later is recommended for those who appreciate Phil's work and ESPECIALLY for those who have never heard Phil's work. He is in a class of his own and has had the vision to organize a body of work with a team of musicians that will stand the test of time.

5 out of 5 stars Phil Gets Down To Business !.......2005-10-28

This one is special! The third of a trio of recent CD's (following 'Vozero' and last year's '6PM'), this 7th solo work by Roxy Music's lead guitarist stands out. It is more moody, with more edge and more experimentation than he's done in awhile. It is also distinguished by a generous helping of guitar - Manzanera dishes out some tasty licks on this one. Still rooted in his formative years, London in the late 1960's, it evokes that period and more. The results are excellent.

Many of the musicians appeared on '6PM,' including Brian Eno and Robert Wyatt, plus Andy Mackay and Paul Thompson of Roxy Music. They are joined by several others (the mix of musicians again varies from song to song).

Given Manzanera's diverse background and experiences, you hear a variety of influences reflected throughout this project. Sometimes his solo work, sometimes Roxy, Beatles, Pink Floyd, and Soft Machine.

'Revolution' is a strong opening song, an in-your-face spirited rocker with Phil belting it out on guitar to Paul's strong drums. Great way to open the CD. 'Technicolor UFO' follows, and is a most catchy number that begs to be released as a single. Set to an energetic Roxy beat, Phil describes his `60's dream, making the scene, in which we find many of the personalities, places and things he was surrounded with at the time. It is a trip. 'That's All I Know' is a direct and sincere song about life, opening with acoustic guitar and ending electric. '50 Minutos Mas Tarde' is an ethereal mood piece, involving Eno, Wyatt on trumpet, plus grand piano, acoustic bass, various vocals and other sounds and treatments. 'Desaparecido' begins with footsteps leading into an Argentine club, music with a Latin influence, a rousing chorus, and an elegant vocal segment with Claire Singers (her singing supports nicely throughout the CD). 'Dusza' is a short moody transitional piece of various sounds leading into 'One Step.' 'One Step' is relaxed, featuring a singing guitar throughout, to a deliberate beat and vocals. 'Swimming' is a bouncy straightforward happy relationship song. 'Bible Black' opens with an eerie, ominous, deliberate feeling, with tension similar to Roxy's 'In Every Dream Home.' Then off it goes in a psychedelic trip evocative of Soft Machine. You wish it wouldn't end so soon, but they make up for that in the bonus track. 'Till The End Of The Line' is another slower paced number, with wonderful soaring guitar Lonely Planet Bhutan

3 out of 5 stars May be, finally..........2003-12-08

        Hello!

I'd been searching for a book on Bhutan which could provide me with a little bit of everything about the country viz. the history, geography, people and the culture. I have searched for books on Bhutan in several book stores around. It was so hard to find one in English but I think this one will do.

May be, finally......... I have found the book I'd been looking for.

5 out of 5 stars An excellent guide for traveling to Bhutan!.......2003-09-28

I bought this guide before my first trip to Bhutan, and it helped me immensely in planning my tour. It contains detailed information about the country--history, culture, geography, and facts for travelers. And it gives accurate information about the trekking routes and cultural tours. As is typical for Lonely Planet publications, this one is interesting and well written, and I found the information to be relevant to my trip. It is not easy to travel to Bhutan (there are many government restrictions), and this book made everything easier. I had such a successful, fun trip that I've been back several times (www.jachungtravel.com), and I still refer to this edition of the guide. It's packed with good information, and I highly recommend it to anyone who wants to go to Bhutan.

4 out of 5 stars In the Thunder Dragon Kingdom adorned with sandalwood.......2002-08-13

Lonely Planet is unbelieveable! They continually pump out the HIGHEST quality guidebooks, and they've done it again with this edition covering Bhutan. I have spent a good portion of my life researching, and hording information on Bhutan, and have found Lonely Planet's guidebook to contain everything and more that the traveller could ever want...with two exceptions. I think that the lack of the U'cen script in the language chapter is a serious mistake. Lonely Planet has the capacity to print in the U'cen script as they did so in their Tibet edition. My other qualm is with the sparse coverage of the smaller and admittedly FAR less visited dzongkhags (districts) (i.e., Daga, Samdrup Jongkhar, Pema Gatshel, Zhemgang, Tsirang, etc.). Lonely Planet, resolve these issues and your book will be the best it could be.

5 out of 5 stars A cut above the rest.......2001-08-22

If you're thinking of going to Bhutan, be advised there's not a whole lot out there to read in preparation, and of what there is, this guide is one of the best. Tourist travel in Bhutan is strictly controlled, and your itinerary is usually planned in advance, so lots of info on hotels, etc. isn't all that necessary. This guide focuses on history, culture and the life of the people--food, housing, dress. Along with the Passport/Odyssey guide by Pommerat, it's all you need. Have fun!

5 out of 5 stars Again, Lonely Planet got there first - excellent outcome !.......2000-12-31

I have no bounds whatsoever to the Lonely Planet publishing house, other than a deep emotional affection towards their guidebooks. Yet, as a world traveler, I cannot but admire their comprehensive coverage of virtually every corner of the world. Almost every place you could dream of visiting is covered in one or more of their guidebooks. And as one would expect... they also made it to this tiny Himalayan kingdom, where less than 4'000 tourists visit each year. The guidebook is great and contains all you need - plenty of information, data, tips, advice, as well as very well written (actually fascinating !) sections on the local history, culture, religion, architecture, etc. At first impact, the guidebook may prove a little disappointing to you, as it explains that most travelers can only go to Bhutan on a guided tour. But this is not quite what it sounds: a guided tour will be tailored just for you - with only 4'000 tourists a year you won't mind being 'guided'. Since you are likely to be in Bhutan with your own guide, this book may not be an essential tool for travel survival, but it surely is a wonderful tool that will make your stay more enjoyable and fascinating. It will enable you to tell your guide what you want to see, to make your itinerary, etc. It will enable you to choose your preferred hotels or restaurants (to be agreed with your tour operator in Bhutan), and even decide where to do your shopping (the choice in Thimphu consists in two or three superb local markets !). But the most valuable sections are probably those on the local culture, an unspoiled culture where the people practice their faith through millenary religious traditions. The guidebook will tell you things you will want to know about the people, their monasteries, their life ! If you go and don't have it with you, you may regret it. ...

When you pay a thief to keep it for you?
Is it a surprise that your wine is sour
When you let a liar choose the brew he pours you?
Talk on the wire about force and choice
It's uncomfortable to raise your voice

            Everybody whispering behind their hand
Selling their despair to any stronger man
            Don't have to listen now

Phil Manzanera, backed by a fine lineup of studio musicians, as noted elsewhere, turn this 8-minute cut alone into a classic prog-rock mini-opera.

In the 2000 U.S. prez election, Bush carried the nation with a popular vote of 50 million; in 2004, 60 million. Manzanera's next lyrics in Listen Now:

We taught ourselves to trust our heads
            It's getting us nowhere
If fifty-five million hearts can't feel it
            We'll never know where

If some of the lyrics of the remaining cuts trend toward standard prog-rock of the time, they can be forgiven, given the era. One instrumental cut, "Island" is warmly reminiscent of Fleetwood Mac's "Sunny Side of Heaven" from 1972. Other notable cuts include "City of Light" whose melody stuck in my head for 20 years, between first hearing it on vinyl and finding the CD, is presages lyrics from Genesis' "The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway" which didn't release until 1974.

In the end, my mind returns to the closing verses from the title cut, continuing to resonate with today's headlines:

Polish up your silver and hide your gold
Send the lookout man down to every corner
Gather in the place where it's bought and sold
Next to where you once used to be a learner
Cold weather coming, people feel the fire
Living on Dead End Street with no desire
            You gotta listen now

            Is anybody listening......?

If for no other reason than the stellar, open production of this classic, you should hear how someone who's definitely NOT a musical household name puts together a brilliant set of tunes with a brilliant set of musicians in brilli Lonely Planet Honduras' Bay Islands: Diving & Snorkeling

Someone obviously went to a lot of effort here-- die cuts, lots of pictures, lyrics.

Is that why this CD cost so much? I'd prefer a plainer design and cheaper price.

Oh yeah, the music is quite good...Phil's best since K-Scope. I was suspicious, having been disappointed with later releases. They are all well played but they are too polite, taking no chances. But this is the real deal...

              Album Description

Driven by the dynamic force of Phil Manzanera (Roxy Music) and Sergio Dias (Flora Purim/Airto Moreira), Mato Grosso charts a course of inspiration from the rainforests of Brazil to the urban contemporary scene. In Mato Grosso, masterful guitar and keyboard tracks by Manzanera and Dias are laid on top of the massive percussive thrust that propels this recording. The compositions in form and content showcase the paradoxes of modern life. Serving as a metaphor for the conflict between development and tradition, Mato Grosso is a compelling reflection of issues especially pertinent to the future of the rainforest which inspired this recording. Characterized by clean production values, the recording is quintessentially modern, even as it pays tribute to the retro yearnings of the 90s and the critical need for a balanced perspective on world affairs, both musical and political. With keen awareness, Mato Grosso links musical styles with visionary zeal and an impeccably contemporary sensitivity.

I think this book is like all the other books produced by lonely planet is made for tourists with no since of adventure. You can plan your entire trip in advance including your meals and in my opinion will make your trip boring.
I'm immigration to Canada soon and I thought this book will help to understand Canada and Canadian but I was really disappointed.

              4 out of 5 stars A Great Travel Guide.......2005-08-30

When I visited Quebec, the guide was a great help. Although most of the prices, hours, and descriptions of the sights and eateries were accurate, some were not, or outdated. A particular restaurant was highly rated in the review, but when I tried to visit the place, the restaurant was nowhere to be found with the given address. Otherwise, the book is good.

              3 out of 5 stars Almost perfect.......2004-07-25

I used the lonely planet Canada for travelling from the West Coast to the East Coast. In most places I found that it gave me all the information that I needed on hostels and places to eat.

The section on the Canadain Rockies was not so good, and an extra guide book is recommened.

On the negative side of this book is that some of the maps are incorrect and I found myself walking the wrong way.

I don't have anything to compare the book to, but it did the job for me.

              1 out of 5 stars A Waste of Money.......2004-01-04

This book is a lot of things, and none of them good. The authors really don't know the country very well, or have failed to visit many of the palces they recommend. I buy a guidebook to learn what's good and what's not. But this book doesn't give that. It just lists the same information anyone can find on the internet or in tourist brochures. I want to know if the rooms are big, if they're clean, where they are in relation to local attractions. None of this information is given.

I used this book to seach out a hotel near Vancouver Airport, which was my arrival point in Canada. The text says that the Holiday Inn is "beside Highway 99.", with no indication where along this 30 mile long road it is.

When the author does add a description, it does nothing to inform. Or it's incorrect. My travels took me to Lake Louise. There are lots of good hiking guides to this region, but I figured the outlines in this book would get me going. I hiked 2 trails the author suggested. The descriptions of both were so wildly inaccurate as to be dangerous. The author thinks there is a teahouse at Mirror Lake (never, I was told). He or she highly recommends hiking the "popular" trail between Moraine Lake and Lake Louise when in fact one doesn't even exist!

The Lonely Planet description of Mt. Assiniboine Park sounded good, so I followed their lead which said "a gravel road takes you close to the park through the ski resort of Sunshine Village." I followed my map to Sunshine Village to be told the gravel road has never ever been open to the public.

The only redeeming feature of this book is that when the author hasn't bothered to visit a place, he or she admits it in a subtle way: In Lake Louise, the extent of recommendations for places to dine is "Eat at your hotel." (lots of great places here for all budgets including the best bakery I found in a month on the road). In Nelson readers are encouraged to "ask at the visitor center" for somewhere to stay. These type of entries make me doubt whether they even bothered to travel to many places they write about, let alone do any actual research.

This book has turned me off a guidebook series I have used for years. Never again.

              1 out of 5 stars Very disappointing.......2003-03-05

The new edition of this book fails to deliver in every aspect. I've used Lonely Planet books in the past, and they've proved to be reliable and useful, but not this one. I live in Banff, and so the observations are from this region.

Firstly, the "new" edition is terribly out of date. I purchased it after seeing the publication date was October 2002. It's accepted and understandable that things change, but there is information that was wrong well over a year before the publication date. A hostel that burnt down in 2000 (Hilda Creek, page 701), and reference to Banff and Jasper as "townsites" (Banff was incorporated in 1991, Jasper in 2001) are examples.

The description of Banff is laughable. There is no possible way anyone could describe the town as a "small, alpine-style village that consists of essentially one main street" (page 686), as this book does. The following history section doesn't get better: "The Bow River forms a class-distinctive boundary that is still evident today." In the first instance, the side of the river that LP tells us "caters to the wealthy crowd" comprises mainly of subsidized housing. And "Many people complain that the townsite is too crowded and argue that more hotels and streets should be built." Aside from the fact a 12 year old could have written the sentence, it's just simply not correct. In an effort to include an environmental slant, the authors have touched on current issues. Readers are informed that a convention center at Lake Louise is controversial because it's "in grizzly bear habitat-good goin' guys" (page 696). Bad goin' I say-it's controversial due to water issues, not bears.

The book is riddled with inaccuacies. Not information that is out of date, but straightforward mistakes. Page 688 talks of canoe rentals at Banff's Central Park. There has never been a canoe rental place here. How could a trained writer even imagine there was? Golden is "just outside the park" (page 692) No, it's over an hour's drive away along a treacherous road. There are literally dozens of similar mistakes in just the few pages on Banff. This is also reflected in the maps: Banff has no "Mamoth St." (page 687). As all Banff streets are named for animals, I guess they meant "mammoth" street, but there is no street of this name either. The mapmakers can't even correctly spell an incorrect name, or something along those lines anyway.

Most surprising for me, the good, solid travel information these books were once renowned for has been replaced by useless, fluffy text that serves no purpose at all. For example, the restaurants listed are not recommendations as such, but simply listings. And where there is a description it does little to inform. Four lines are used to explain the source of the name of an Irish pub (page 694) that has absolutely no relevance to Banff or the mountains, including that the original Guinness Brewery is still open and that it was "founded by 34 year old Arthur Guinness in 1759." The next listing is for Bruno's, named for one of Banff's most famous and respected mountain men. This name isn't explained, just that the restaurant has a "wide-ranging menu." There is an excellent reason why renting a vehicle in Banff, as opposed to Calgary or Canmore, is a bad choice (no unlimited mileage is offered, even by the majors), yet, this important and useful information isn't included (page 696).

My original purpose of buying this book was for travel around my own country, not so much to rely on every word in print but to get a feeling as how Canada is portrayed by these books. The litany of inaccuracies and uselessness seems to continue beyond the Rockies section. On page 34 readers are told brown bears are "actually a black bear but brown in color." I just wish I could ask the author how he came up with this unique theory.

I imagine picking a Lonely Planet book as the guide of choice is habit more than anything for many travelers. It's reflected in the attitude of those I meet on the road and the reviews I see here at Amazon. It seems somehow ironic that Lonely Planet has evolved from the likes of an Africa book I relied on for every word in the 80s, written by a guy whose biography had him living in a hut brewing mango wine somewhere I can't recall, to this worthless tome that relies on name rather than content to generate sales.
