5 out of 5 stars one 3rd of the greatest album of all time!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!.......2005-08-18

this is the 1st ever musical geniuses slow collection.it was designed by a scientist who recognized musics power on the mind and harnessed it.this album has been proven to stimulate the same part of the brain that relaxes you.or for you brainy types,it gets your dopamine flowing.then theres the fact that this music is like pure ear sweetness.it will send all your nuerons off to dreamland and you will feel a dramatic physical change.my favorite song on this one is the violin concerto.extremely relaxing and great for the soul.everybody with anything from a cramp to cancer should put this one on.besides all that, its exquisitely beautiful youll fall instantly in love!an abselute tresure and blessing to music and the world!

4 out of 5 stars Music for concentration and focus.......2001-05-14

I first read the research on the positive effects of classical music at 60 beats per minute many years ago. With no commercial options available then, I made my own tape from excerpts of world class recordings I own, largely of Mozart. I rarely tolerate background music while I work because it distracts and diffuses focus. The slow Mozart movements have an astonishingly opposite and positive effect, enhancing concentration and mental clarity. For listening pleasure, I prefer the complete works with all movements, as a prior reviewer noted. However, for calmed focus and concentration, by removing the alternate movements this recording serves that purpose with excellence.

There is sufficient variety to avoid monotony, and while the musicianship will not garner critical acclaim it is competent and acceptable for the purpose of this recording. I enjoy it immensely. It is one of the rare pieces I will play in the background while doing work that requires serious focus.

3 out of 5 stars good news, bad news.......2000-07-23

Good news: contains famous works of Mozart for a very small cost. The music is eloquent and perhaps stimulates the brain with the Mozart effect. It is definitly good to listen while commuting and stuck an a traffic jam.

Bad news: These music are so well known that to many, it feels redundant. These are not world-class performers or conductors, so the music doesn't have a new intereptation or anything out of the ordinary. Also, I tend to like to have the entire three (or four) movements of the song, not just one movement. And practically all of these songs are the slow movement so it gets redundant.

I would recommend this to any beginning listeners but for more experienced listners, try investing in a slightly more expensive but better performed recordings.

This is a pretty run of the mill clasical music CD. The first track sounded a little rough to me (sounded like harmonica and recorder -- I was not overly impressed) but the other tracks seem more par for the course.

Opening with Clara Rockmore's reworking of Tchaikovsky with the theremin, and finishing with one of Brian Eno's ambient soundscapes, OHM artfully succeeds in its goal of giving a representative (as opposed to the impossible, comprehensive) overview of the first several decades of electronic music. Over 3 discs, 42 compositions, and 96 pages of notes and photos, OHM clearly illustrates the producers' and contributing writers' point that early electronic music is much of the foundation of contemporary music. Herein lies the connective tissue bridging musique concrète, 20th-century classical, electronic experimentation, and the theoretical avant-garde to psychedelia, ambient, dub, techno, electro, and synthpop and the globalization of sound. The groundbreaking uses of loops, sampling, drones, remixes, and cut-and-paste technology are put fully into context. The diversity of music included makes any sort of summation impossible, but that is also the point: electronic music is not really a genre, but an open field of endless possibility. From John Cage's famous "William's Mix" of tape snippets to Karkheinz Stockhausen's electronic orchestral compositions, from David Tudor and Holger Czukay's experiments in unrelated blendings of audio elements to David Behrman's supremely peaceful duet between computers and musicians, the aural renegades on OHM tread where none (save a few of their contemporaries) had gone before. The liner notes convey the incredible amount of hard work and experimentation it took to stitch together many of these pieces in the predigital era. Putting aside the inevitable quibbles about what's missing (much of it due to legal and/or logistical issues), a more complete collection of musical eggheads, eccentrics, and visionaries is hard to imagine. --Carl Hanni

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars excellent but uncomplete.......2006-11-12

Althought most of the music here is an excellent collection of electronic music history, this 3 CDs lack of the important contribution given by the RAI phonology studios of Milan, Italy in the 50s
(which was bigger than Koln's WDR studios) with Bruno Maderna, Luciano Berio and Luigi Nono.
This is a big mistake. Milans studios were the biggest of europe and produced many important electroacoustic pieces.
If the collection aim to describe faithfully electronic music history, it should include this artists too.

4 out of 5 stars To call it music may be a bit limiting. .......2006-10-24

Some of the tracks on here are "music". That is that they contain all the bits we're trained to experience as music -- melody, etc. Some are not, and the composers would be the first people to tell you that. A lot of these works are reactions to ingrained rules, so they're bound to be jarring.

A more successful way to approach such a broad and varied collection of audio experimentation is to think of it as curated sound. This isn't something to wash the dishes to, or to seduce someone to (although if you did manage to seduce someone with the recordings on this anthology, HOLD ON TO THAT PERSON, because they've got to be a keeper). These are unique sound textures that deserve a close, probably solitary listen, and I think if you're in the right frame of mind, it can be a very rewarding listen.

My main complaint is sequencing: each dicrete piece follows it's own internal logic, so there are more than a couple rough gear changes. However, since each piece is so different, and the collection is so varied, I'm not sure that you could totally escape that.

4 out of 5 stars A worthwhile collection.......2006-01-11

The OHM collection contains some of those ground breaking electronic compositions that have shaped today's styles, from the early electronic instruments of Theremin and Martenot, through Pierre Schaeffer's Music Concrete tape music and the electronic music of Stockhausen and Subotnick, to the mainframe computer output of Risset and Chowning.

It is unfair to mark this collection down due to the production quality and 'musicality' of its contents, to do so would be to staggeringly miss the point of the development of electronic music through the 20th Century. What this collection shows is the ideas behind those at the cutting edge of the genre before many could even conceive of such output. That said it is hard going at points, as experimental music can be.

Highlights for me are no doubt Olivier Messiaen's 'Oraison' on CD 1, David Tudor's 'Rainforest Version 1' on CD 2 and on CD 3 David Behrman's 'On the Other Ocean' and Maryanne Amacher's 'Living sound Patent Pending'.

1 out of 5 stars OhMyGodHowDreadful.......2005-08-15

Ok, this collection is supposed to be early works and, thus not expected to be very sophisticated or polished. But the OHM collection sounds like the first attempt of a spastic cat turned-loose on a Moog keyboard. When it is not boreing, this collection of random and dissonant sounds (I can't call it music) is without any redeeming qualities to make it worth while. Don't get me wrong, I am a long-time fan of Wendy (nie Walter) Carlos and some other real pioneers of electronic music. However, I find that the Ohm collection has no similar qualities and is a major disappointment.

5 out of 5 stars Kid Stockhausen.......2003-01-17

This is required listening for anybody interested in the history of electronic music. Although implicitly aiming for the techno music audience, this audio history is overwhelmingly focused on the classical avant-garde of electro-acoustic composers. The closest you'll get to pop electronica is the Brian Eno track at the end of the third disc. No Kraftwerk, no Moroder, etc. Instead "OHM" manages to point to the continuities between, say, John Cage and artists currently working at the experimental edges of electronica (so-called IDM). It seems to be saying, "You think Kid 606 is visionary? Well check out this Stockhausen track from '59!"

Admittedly, some of the songs are much more interesting to think about than they are to listen to. Some of the early pieces that were made through thosuands of hours of pains-taking tape-splicing could be made today in an afternoon with a digital audio editor and a few effects plug-ins.

It is a beautiful package, containing a 90 page booklet of essays, quotations from the featured artists, and photographs. What all music should be: an education in daring.

This is just an awesome CD. It covers a variety of ukulele playing styles and music styles. It shows all those non believers that the ukulele is something more than just a toy. It truly is a beautiful instrument and a beautiful sounding instrument. This is demonstrated ever so skillfully by the masters on this CD. Its completely worth the money and is definitely something to put in your prized CD collection.

5 out of 5 stars One of Hawaii's BEST!.......2004-10-04

In the 70's era of Hawaii's growing number of contemporary Hawaiian music, no other band sounds quite like this...a mix of jazz, folk and love songs blended well with the deep vocals of Billy Kaui and Country Comfort. Despite being a band cursed by controversy of drug use, they still have sound unmatched by any Hawaiian sound, and they easily rank up there with the great bands of the 70's;Kalapana, C&K, Olomana, etc.

The CD is a nice collection of the bands greatest hits, unfortunatly the original recording quality was reproduced instead of being digitaly mastered-all the original hiss can still be heard, an unfortunate drawback to being done on analog in the 70's.

Another downside to the collection - Theres many other collections out there, and many of them have the SAME songs repeated on them. I think 3 compilations have the song "Pretty Girl". I LOVE that song, but to have it repeated on multiple CDs...gets kinda old. HOwever if you can only buy one, this one is a GOOD choice. The only song I think you'll miss is "It does'nt matter anyhow".

4 out of 5 stars billy kaui rest in peace.......2003-01-16

i still have this one on vinyl. what a scratched up noise of a disc it is. still brings back a lot of memories of my days in hawaii. it was just before i left hawaii, that the lead singer of country comfort, billy kaui passed away. that year hawaii also lost Robert Beaumont of Olomana, and in 1999, the passing of Thomas Mackey Feary Jr closed another chapter of hawaiian music. the good die young i guess. i still get home sick when i kick back and listen to waimanalo blues, the winds are gonna blow, so i am heading down that country side, singing my waimanalo blues. Aloha to all you hawaiian music lovers. ohana means family, regardless or color or creed. enjoy, kick back, sing along, and make-a bruddah. shaka

5 out of 5 stars Very Best of Country Comfort.......2001-11-15

I love this music! I grew up in Waimanalo and used to listen to this music all the time. I actually knew Billy & Jimmy. I love the sound and feel of this band. It reminds me of when I was young and walking home from school slurping on a shave ice, or sitting at the beach and watching the swells come in. I'm really sorry this band can no longer play together. It is a real treat to hear "Waimanalo Blues" or "Hello Waimanalo" while sitting at my desk at work in California. It makes me homesick! If you want a taste of real Hawaii, try this CD. It's "da kine"! I also recommend Gabby Pahinui and Sunday Manoa.

The fact that some of the audio is not technically perfect, or that one or two of the players do a little fumble and then have to get back on beat onow and then only makes this album feel more real and more fun. The music is deep and melodic and honestly expressed.

4 out of 5 stars You will love Club Nisei.......2006-05-23

I was in Japan in the mid-1950's and fell in love with the "special sound" music. Settle back for some of the most pleasant listening you've ever experienced!

4 out of 5 stars A jaunt through time.......2005-08-16

If I were a derelict at a bus stop in the 1950s, in post-war Hawaii and saw these nice, well-dressed Japanese Americans escort their dates into these clubs, I would want to join them. I would have marveled at the Japanese Ricky Ricardo. If I were stopped at the door, unable to enter because of my dress, I would be content to stand on the sidewalk and peer in. There is a woman in there that I could love.

5 out of 5 stars 1950s Japanese Music.......2001-05-05

These songs were very popular with American GIs during the Japanese occupation and the Korean War.I was stationed in Central Honshu at Itami Air Base and Japanese entertainers performed most of these song in the NCO and service clubs.I purchased a Hi-Fi LP in the late 1950s recorded by the 49thState Hawaii Record Club with many of the same songs on it as the Club Nisei CD.I am looking forward to hearing these songs on the CD with the improved sound technology.

5 out of 5 stars a superior remake of the original lp.......2001-04-14

A MUST HAVE FOR EVERY KOREAN AND WW2 PACIFIC VETERAN THAT HAS HEARD THIS MUSIC IN HAWAII JAPAN HONG KONG ETC ON R & R, THIS ALBUM WILL BRING BACK MANY MEMORIES GOOD AND BAD, BUT IT IS WELL DONE WITH EXCEPTIONAL QUALITY.....CARL MAJOR

5 out of 5 stars Intriquing, Exotic, Soothing, yet Melancholy.......2000-10-04

Super Cool. Exotica meets 40's big band arranging with a Japanese/Pacific Isle melodic twist. Historical liner notes detail the intriquing history of musicians in Hawaii's post-WWII Japanese community. I love this record, then again, everything this label puts out is excellent.

5 out of 5 stars "Lime, Semen, Chestnut Blossoms".......2007-02-22

Yes, that is the translation of the name of the title of this very challenging, cantankerous, difficult, visionary and very rewarding album - "Lime, Semen, Chestnut Blossoms".

Shiina Ringo's voice is very expressive and she does a lot of things with her voice - she is a fragile innocent baby doll and the a demented sex maniac. Contrasts and clashes seems to be pivotal in Ms Shiina Ringo's art.

This album features very edgy and harsh guitar based rock music as well as Jazzy orchestral music and Shiina adapts her voice to suit the musical conditions and parameters of each song. Would I call this Pop music or J-Pop? Well! I don't know! Whatever!

The orchestral "lounge" music of track five gradually dissolves into a harpsichord solo, accompanied by a pianoforte. Track six featured some deep string instruments, violas, 'cellos and basses, and piano and some percussion. I cannot describe the instrumentation and structure of the next song, it is simply "out there"!

Curious? Buy it!

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful to Experience.......2006-05-16

Shiina Ringo's "Kalk Zamen Kuri no Hana" is the best album you've never heard. It can be a little difficult to absorb at first, as every song overflows with random sounds and textures, but repeated listens reveal strong melodies, powerful/wounded vocals and postmodern genre-hopping pastiche this side of Bjork's "Post." Unlike "Post," however, "Kalk Zamen" is an extremely intimate experience, with a feel comparable to Bjork's later album, "Vespertine," or Tori Amos' "Boys for Pele."

Shiina Ringo is a creative voice that deserves the world's attention. It's too bad that this voice will likely never reach Western ears.
