Memories.......2007-07-22
The songs that were a part of the CD were well chosen, and they
fairly represented that era. My husband and I fully enjoyed this CD
Track titles mixed-up.......2007-06-13
This isn't really a review of the songs (I like them.) I just wanted to say that when I put my CD in my PC and opened the player the track titles did not match the songs. They were all mixed-up. For example, when I double-clicked on "Lil Marlene" I got "On the Atchison, Topeka and the Santa Fe'. Very strange. I have no idea how this happened. The songs all sound great, though. It's just odd that the titles didn't match the actual songs.
Revies WW@ Vol 2.......2007-03-18
I am in mt mid-sixties (1941). I enjoyed Volume 2 better than the original CD. Both were good and if you are from my generation, you should enjoy either one.
great 40's compilation........2007-03-18
i was born in 1961, but like the geeky audiophile that i am, i have eagerly dug into all the decades that have produced recorded music. i always thought that the forties were one of the weaker decades out there when it comes to sonic delights. so why do i love the two volumes of "songs that got us through wwii" so much? rhino records has a lot to do with it. as all audiophiles of the cd age now, rhino is one of the best outfits around when it comes to compilations of music. on these 2 wonderful discs from the forties, they have done it again. pure pleasure is to be had here. one drifts back to another time, across decades, to experience the popular songs of another american culture. this is a perfect introduction to that decade for anyone. having heard these two volumes, i can't wait to give the forties another chance. i am being won over, i think. thanks rhino.
Great Nostalgia.......2007-01-04
I purchased this CD collection for my residents in a dementia/Alzheimers care unit. They enjoy singing along with the songs from their youth, and some can even name the band/artist performing. The CD is a fun collection of lively and sentimental popular hits from the 40s. It would make a great gift for a person who grew up during this era.

Your age is important.......2007-01-10
Both Vol 1 and Vol 2 are good. This is only true if you are old enough to have listened to these selections on the radio and played them on a juke box. If you are the correct age, they will bring back many happy memories.

As the title implies, this is a relaxed and intimate date much in the manner of those ages-old "for lovers only" discs that celebrated the romance and melody of jazz expression. The tempos are generally in the slow to medium range, and the moods are lovingly rendered. Wynton Marsalis's songbook here is strictly standard and classic, ranging from "You Don't Know What Love Is" to Thelonious Monk's "Crepuscule with Nellie" and "When Its Sleepy Time Down South," to a closing nod to Crescent City-street classicism, "Bourbon Street Parade." Employing a variety of mutes and expressive effects, Marsalis renders this program with simple piano, bass, and drum accompaniment for the most part, though tenor saxman Todd Williams and alto saxophonist Wessell Anderson join him for two selections. --Willard Jenkins
Customer Reviews:
Wynton Marsalis Standard Time, Vol. 2: Intimacy Calling.......2007-07-17
This (unlike another review I just wrote) IS pretty jazz. Very relaxing, and my untrained ear can actually hear a melody in each song rather than it just sounding like someone playing random notes on a horn. I love it!
In the mood..........2007-03-08
talk about getting into the mood for intimacy... WOW... bring on the soft light and champagne...
Superb Album.......2005-03-30
This, the 2nd in his concept album series is excellent, the sounds are played with such a level of intimacy and warm romance that not only does it stand out a wonderful jazz album in its own right but also can be used to set the mood for that special dinner!
The playing is lovely, the warm timbre casting you back to the very birth of jazz and evokes nothing but the deepest of emotion and highest praise for Mr. Marsalis and to think he was not yet at his prime on this album!!!!
This CD is a great tool for trumpet students.......2003-04-27
This CD was early on a part of my jazz listening, and as a jazz trumpet player, I inadvertently picked up a bunch of style and technical elements from wynton's playing. Wynton is a traditionalist, but by using a stand up bass instead of a tuba he really transcends a time scale in his pieces and defies categorization. His use of articulation as an element of swing is textbook. If you play the trumpet, and you want to know how to play jazz, then pick this up. Bourbon Street Parade especially is the most textbook New Orleans swing chart i've ever heard.
Wynton at his Best.......1998-08-16
I heard this CD for the first time in the cabin of a sailboat anchored in a cove at night. It is classic Wynton and classic jazz. Very dreamy and romantic. Sit back, sip your favorite wine and gaze at the stars with your lover while listening to this.

Monster Ballads, Vol. 2 Review.......2007-01-15
This cd was great and the one my husband wanted. The songs are very enjoyable.
Monster Ballads Volume 2.......2006-03-17
Great songs from the the 80's big hair period. Love most all of them!!!!
This is the better album of that series.......2004-11-07
I still like to mention this album in conversations, because some of today's songs, even country band Lonestar's power ballads like Amazed, borrow from this rock album. I like the choices of songs from the heavy metal bands here. But the writing is very good, the musical arrangements are dynamite and there's a loudness to the power ballads that can rival their heavy rockers! Firehouse, L A Guns, Poison and some others have some very dynamite songs here. This is the much better album of that series, versus the more commercial sheen of the first.
No Foreigner = 4 stars.......2002-12-21
I agree, both of these CDs are great collaborations...however, they forgot the greatest love ballad of all time: I Wanna Know What Love Is - By Foreigner. How could they turn that song away from this collection. That song would give this album 5 stars. Anyway, monster snares and big hair forever

The title Jazz After Dark II references late night seduction as conjured up in the slow, but purposeful, pace of ballads. The set's two discs are smartly divided into instrumentals and vocals. The thematic focus aligns a broad range of players from Chet Baker to Ella Fitzgerald. There are the classicists (Bill Evans, Dave Brubeck, Duke Ellington) and the modernists (Sonny Rollins, Thelonious Monk), with small combos and duets being the setting for them all. The vocal disc covers the greater span of years, with performances by contemporary singers (including Curtis Stigers, Karrin Allyson, and Peter Cincotti) alongside vintage tracks by some of their mentors and influences. --David Greenberger
Customer Reviews:
Sweet.......2007-03-02
JAZZ AFTER DARK II presents an interesting mix of instrumental and vocal, both new and old. The moods created are at times contemplative, affectionate, woeful, entranced. An all-star program of great jazz standards provides the listener (or participant) with two hours of fine and dulcet music. Program commentary and track personnel are included. For all lovers of sweet jazz, and all lovers.

Sexy,sexy.sexy.......2006-04-25
ever heard some sultry jazz during a love scene in a movie, or maybe a film noire, and said to yourself-"who is that and where do I get it?!" this CD is the answer, with one disc instumental and etherial, and the other with voice and unique song sytlists. Curtis Stigers! who woulda thunk it, but that cut works as well as the other. this is a must for rainy night alone, with your favorite squeeze; or maybe an afternoon at dusk. Enjoy the classics that PB put together in a pefect mix. There is a reason that this music is timeless... find out
Playboy Rises Again.......2005-07-16
Playboy may be many things to many people, but one thing the iconic label is for sure - and that's a connoiseur of unadorned, raw and searing jazz. Unfortunately, most follow up compilations such as this (Playboy issued JAD I a few years ago) are usually never as good as the original and are just an attempt at a quick cash-in. Thankfully this is not the case with JAD II. If anything, this one improves on the original. Like JAD I, this 2-cd set consists of one instumental disc and one vocal. The selections simply never miss and the mood is sustained throughout. Playboy may have made sex mainstream, but this music is all romance with just a hint of naughty. Here's hoping JAD III continues in this superlative tradition. In the meantime, shuffle both JAD I and JAD II and you've got nearly four hours of some of the greatest American music ever recorded. A must.

Not nearly as good as Vol. 1.......2007-04-26
I love Ella Fitzgerald, so any of her albums are great, but for some reason this just doesn't have the same magic as Vol. 1 in this series. That is one of my favorite CDs, so I thought this one would be as good. She is always amazing, and the better songs on this album are 'Night and Day', 'So In Love', 'I've Got you Under My Skin', and 'Don't Fence Me In.' The last is probably my favorite. For an Ella fan, it's worth buying. But buy 'Ella Fitzgerald Sings the Cole Porter Songbook Vol. 1' first.
The Voices of Angels.......2005-08-30
Ella Fitzgerald is one of those rare people that can seldom be found in the world of musicians and vocal singing Jazz Ballads. She is masterful in both Volumes One and Two of the Cole Porter Song Book CD's. If you want to hear an angel on earth sing get both these CD's from Amazon.com, especially if your going to propose marriage to someone during dinner, I recommend that you have this music playing softly in the backround.
THE BEST COLE PORTER ALBUM EVER.......2001-07-28
This and Vol. 1 of "The Cole Porter Songbook" is the best collection of Porter's songs you'll find. Fitzgerald hits all the right beats. She's emotional when she should be emotional. Flirty when she should be flirty. Perhaps the most appealing part of her performance is the sense of humor that shines through. And so does Porter's. It's the best songwriter and the best singer all in one. How can you beat it? If you don't have Vol. 1, buy the complete set. You'll save money in the long run. Because you'll want both volumes once you have one of 'em.
I love Ella in the springtime.......2000-06-05
Even better than volume one. From the gorgeous rendition of I Love Paris to the delightful and fun Don't Fence Me In (which noone else should even bother singing again because Ella has perfected it), this CD has one great song after another, different in moods, yet united by their great arrangements and above all Ella's clear beautiful voice and perfect phrasing. On some of the tracks, especially I've Got You Under My Skin (this version blows Sinatra's away) and Don't Fence Me In, the sound quality is remarkable and it sounds like it was recorded yesterday not in the mid 50s.
De-Lovely.......2000-04-21
The companion to volume 1--you can't have one without the other. Beautiful, lyrical renditions of "I Love Paris" and "So in Love." "It's All Right with Me" is really hot, and "Don't Fence Me In" is a fun finish. Really, they're all favorites. As with volume 1, Buddy Bregman provides the apt orchestra arrangements. I can't honestly say whether I prefer either volume; whenever I listen to one of them, I invariably play the other immediately afterward.

Album Description
Ballads fuse the arts of music and storytelling. Through ballads, classic tales of human experience are enshrined in poetry and song. Pete Seeger, an American folk hero and icon of the great "folk revival" of the 1950s & 1960s, hand-selected some of his favorite American ballads to compile a series of classic American song-stories flowing from the bedrock of the American experience. Through these captivating songs, a tale is told of America "once upon a time." This CD is the second in a series of Ballad reissues, and an important recording for any fan of American folk music. Compiled and annotated by Jeff Place and Guy Logsdon.

pete finds his roots and ours .......2006-06-26
Since my youth I have had an ear for roots music, whether I was conscious of that fact or not. The original of that interest first centered on the blues, then early rock and roll and later, with the folk revival of the early 1960's, folk music. I have often wondered about the source of this interest. I am, and have always been a city boy, and an Eastern city boy at that. Nevertheless, over time I have come to appreciate many more forms of roots music than in my youth. The subject of the following review is an example.
I have done reviews of Pete Seeger's more political albums and need not address those issues here. These volumes of American classics with Pete and banjo are the songs you learned mysteriously in your youth, apparently by osmosis. As each song goes along you find yourself singing along to at least part of the song. These songs go deep into the popular culture and the roots of what makes those of us who were born here conscious of the musical influences that formed our lives. You may not like every song but the total effect will grab you.
Essential folk/Americana album.......2003-07-17
Pete Seeger's five "American Favorite Ballads" LPs were the basic documents of American folk music for generations. No dusty museum pieces, though - they were lively, funny, inspirational, joyous. It is delightful to see them begin to appear now on CD, especially fleshed out, as this volume is, with appropriate additional tracks from his other out-of-print Folkways LPs (how about getting some of those out on CD?). Essential in every way.
Excellent resource to rediscover our musical heritage.......2003-07-15
Folksinger, banjoplayer, songwriter Pete Seeger was born in New York in 1919, the son of musicologist Charles Louis Seeger and violin teacher Constance de Clyver. A political activist, he fought injustice. Seeger was a member of the Almanac Singers and The Weavers in the 40s. During the 50s and 60s, he recorded for Folkways Records. In fact, he was so prolific, there were 38 albums released for Folkways between 1950 and 1964. From 1957-62, Seeger's 5-record "American Favorite Ballads" series were a cornerstone of the collection. "American Favorite Ballads" has apparently been reissued in two volumes. The songs were, and still are, essential items for the folk music enthusiast. As Seeger always believed, we should be singing and enjoying these old songs. And he had a knack for involving his audiences, interacting with them in ways that stimulated their active participation. While not all of the songs on this Volume 2 CD are true ballads in the strict definition of the term, each tells a strong story. With extensive liner notes, and 27 songs totaling 73 minutes, there are many songs that we'll immediately recognize while others are a little more obscure. All are sung by Seeger, most accompanied only with banjo or 12-string guitar. This is an excellent resource for all Americans to rediscover their musical heritage and favorite story songs. The follow up to the original, this collection in many ways surpasses the initial effort. Duets seem to rule here, with Cyndi Lauper and Frank Sinatra double teaming on "Santa Claus Is Coming to Town," while the irrepressible Ronnie Spector shares the mic with Darlene Love for a resplendent "Rockin' Around the Christmas Tree," and Heart's Ann and Nancy Wilson give "Blue Christmas" a steamy and sizzling once-over. Vanessa Williams stops the disc, though, with her simple yet stunning rendition of "What Child Is This." The then-sign-of-the-times inclusion, Michael Bolton, offers a forgettable "White Christmas," but it's the only real clunker in the bunch. Always just a tad too country to make it as a cross-over artist, Randy Travis still makes "Jingle Bell Rock" his own in his smooth way. --Steve Gdula

Customer Reviews:
It was pretty good........2007-01-17
The tract 3(Roasting on an open fire), tract 10(The White Christmas-by Michael Boton) and 15 (Sleigh ride- by Debby Gibson) were my favorites. It was pretty ggod, actually.
Welcome New Additions.......2007-01-09
The new songs in this cd are great additions to the long list of popular Christmas songs. These tracks will endure like the rest of the good ones, and it's well worth getting for your Christmas collection!
It's ok........2007-01-03
I thought that I would love this series of music cd's, but I was wrong.
You get one of two great songs, and the rest are no good.
Great (semi)-modern Christmas record..........2006-11-27
Favorite tracks:
1. Tom Petty
12. Extreme
9. Ronnie Spector
There should be something for everyone. Rock to Country to Rap...
I want a Rickenbacker guitar.......2004-12-09
This album is good, but it isn't quite the classic that the first Very Special Christmas is. The highlight is definitely the opening song by Tom Petty. The rest of the album is somewhat uneven. While there are some fine performances by the likes of Sinead O'Conner, Ronnie Spector and Darlene Love, there are also a few lame performances by people like Jon Bon Jovi, Michael Bolton and Extreme. One of the oddities here is a "duet" between Frank Sinatra and Cyndi Lauper. They actually just used an old vocal by Frank from 1947 and added Cyndi's voice to it. In an interesting side note, they originally tried to have Paula Adbul do the duet, but she was unable to hit the right notes. The only artist here that is repeated from the the first Very Special Christmas is Run-D.M.C., but the song they do here is far inferior to the classic "Christmas in Hollis". Overall it's a decent Christmas album, and if you are a fan of the performers featured on it, I would recommend it.

W.O.W. !.......2005-05-11
These songs are pure gold. Personally, I really enjoy the first 6 tracks. I mean, if it were a CD consisting of just Manteca or just Sinnerman, I would buy it on the spot. Believe it or not, after I listened to Manteca (which means lard in Spanish I found out), I bought many single-versions of the song. I Have Arturo Sandoval, Dizzy Gillespie, Jeff Golub, Poncho Sanchevez, and Woody Herman's versions of Manteca; I must say that Verve has chosen the best one again (Dizzy G's) for thier record. Props Verve, and keep up the good work.
The price is right.......2004-02-24
Why can't more CD's be priced like this fine offering from the Verve vaults?
For the cost of a couple of gallons of gasoline this music will take you further and you'll get plenty of mileage out of these classics. Beginning with the Carnegie Hall live recording by Dizzy Gillespie of "Manteca" in 1961, this disc will either take you down memory lane or set you on a new path of jazz discovery. Jazz means many different things to many different people, often discredited as being too cerebral or just plain high music, jazz often gets a bad rap. There is no clear definition because like many other genres there are many sub categories. Within the broad context of jazz this disc is diversified . Several great songbirds are featured including the marvelous, so nice the used here twice, Nina Simone, Sarah Vaughn, Ella Fitzgerald(two songs too), Betty Carter and Astrud Gilerto. Unlike the remixed versions featured on "Verve/Remixed 2," the complete songs display the full spectrum and range of depth of some these artists. For example, Nina Simone's vocals on "Sinnerman"show the gospell influenced style more clearly than on the remixed version and her piano skills are demonstrated along with her jazz interaction with other instrumentalists. It is a thing of beauty. The live version of "Brother , Where Are You"? by Oscar Brown Jr. has the passion of the Civil Rights movement, a slow swagerring, gritty song that builds momentum as the audience claps along joining the artist in unison in approval of his message. "Blues For Brother George Jackson"(check your history) fits the mold of what most non jazz people think of as jazz with it's multiple horns led by Archie Shepp with yet another Civil Rights era song. I would be remiss without mentioning the exceptional Latin influenced songs by Cal Tjader and Willie Bobo entitled "Soul Sauce" and "Fried Neck Bones and Some Home Fries" respectively. These two songs alone are worth the price of admission. It is worth comaparing the versions to the remixed versions to fully appreciate both the originals and the great job with the new interpretations. Recommended as is but even more so as a companion to the remixed versions. A super compilation for traditional jazz fans or those interested in the roots of "Verve Remixed /2."
Real Value for Money!.......2004-01-06
Even if you only liked two or three of the tracks here, you'd still be getting a great deal for your money. That said, every track here is a winner and it's easy to see why these were picked for remixing on Volume 2. Virtually all of them feature wonderful percussion, which usually translates into arresting remix sounds (like the mighty Six Degrees Records roster!). If you don't own any Nina Simone, start right here with the mighty 10 minute "Sinnerman," used to dazzling effect in the "Thomas Crown Affair." Her "Black is..." shows us what a unique talent she was. As far as Volume 3 goes, it will interesting to see if Verve ever gives the OK for some remixes of Getz, Bird or the mighty Trane. Perhaps people are scared to touch those, but regardless of your position of remixing, Verve Unmixed 2 is the perfect present to get for someone, especially if you're CHEAP!!!
Verve Unmixed - the Sequel........2003-09-07
"Verve Unmixed 2" is the companion CD to "Verve Remixed 2," in which a handful of dance DJs successfully revamp several jazz classics. Here, each track appears in its pure original version, giving the listener a tour through some of the genre's most respected artists. The album kicks off with the infectious bite of Dizzy Gillespie's "Manteca," which sets the tone for the rest of the album. Ella Fitzgerald's "Slap That Bass" and Ramsey Lewis' "Do You Wanna" stand out pretty well, while Cal Tjader's stunning "Soul Sauce (Guachi Guaro)" is a timeless fusion of traditional jazz and Latin flavor. Another winner is the beautifully piano-laced "Black Is the Color of My True Love's Hair," which features Nina Simone's voice in all its aching glory. There isn't much more for me to say, as the music really speaks for itself. If you already have "Verve Remixed 2," it would be foolish to pass on this release which not only has the original versions but also one of the most impressive tracklistings I've seen on any compilation.
More classics.......2003-09-05
This follow-up disc is every bit a great as the first. Do not let the low price scare you into thinking it's something less than high quality. A must have disc...fans and those unfamiliar with the Verve label will both enjoy that this music is BACK!!!!
