These 26 selections, recorded from 1904 to 1922, document the work of an important American player and band composer. Despite the trivial nature of most of the music, one can't help listening to Herbert Clarke's playing with respect and growing affection. He was a most elegant player, with a beautiful tone that comes across even in the earliest of these recordings. The showiest pieces, which can be quite dazzling, are still performed with taste and musicianship. This disc is an important sound document, and the transfers from even the earliest of the recordings are surprisingly listenable. Highly recommended to all brass and nostalgia lovers. --Leslie Gerber
Customer Reviews:
Brilliant playing transcending primitive recording technique.......2001-01-11
Hearing this CD -- despite the distracting surface noise from the primative acoustic recordings from which this CD was remastered -- I appreciate for the first time the greatness of Clarke as a cornet soloist. If he is not the greatest to date, he is surely one of the giants upon whose shoulders modern virtuosi of the trumpet (which has pretty much replaced the cornet) stand.
Clarke's sheer artistry in both composition and performance still dazzle and his interpretive ability brings to life some of the 'tear jerkers' of the golden age of popular brass music in a way no modern performance comes close to.
Although on first hearing one could be very much distracted by the primitive recordings, the brass player soon focuses on Clarke's playing so completely that the the surface noise disappears.
Every trumpet player and cornetist, more, every brass player and lover of band music, should own a copy.
The Master of the Cornet.......2001-01-04
God bless Crystal Records for taking the time to re-issue these extremely rare and valuable recordings from an unfortunately neglected giant in American musical history. Most people today don't realise how famous and influential Mr. Clarke and his peers (Sousa, Pryor et. al.)were on the American musical scene at the beginning of the Twentieth century. It is very important that these recordings (and others from this period, the birth of sound recording) be preserved for future generations.
As for those who could not stand the "hiss" on these recordings, how spoiled can you be? You simply miss the point of all this. We all know that these records were made during the infancy of the recording industry, and that they didn't have the technology we now have. I find it thrilling to listen to them just as they are. Recorded sound is the closest we have to time travel, and I find it fascinating to listen to these recordings as though I was there when they were first made. And most of all, through the marvel of recorded sound (Mr. Sousa notwithstanding) I can listen today to the greatest cornetist who ever lived, even though he passed away over 50 years ago.
Hopefully Crystal Records will someday put out an anthology of original Sousa and Pryor Band recordings.
Clarke is the cornet master!.......2000-08-03
Herbert Clarke is the finest cornetist the planet has ever seen. The technical brilliance on Carnival is just breathtaking. The sound quality of the recording is little hinderance on the true genius behind this man's playing. Don't let the hiss bother you!!!
heartbreaking music from a bygone era.......2000-03-22
These vintage recordings would have been otherwise lost to us--and a great loss at that. Clarke plays so beautifully, esp. those pieces that he wrote. It's notall oom-paa-paa, but music that is deeply affecting and stirring. This is the effect that Wynton Marsalis was going for in his "Carneval." While Marsalis's album is a wonderful tribute, this is the original. A must-have for any serious trumpet player.
Be careful.......1999-09-14
Watch out if you want to buy this cd! It's a good cd with Herbert Clarke playing some of his own pieces the way they should be played...but the recording is TERRIBLE! Naturally, it's a 1904 recording! But the hiss for the first half of the cd is almost painful. It's NOT something you can just ignore, so don't be caught unawares.

It's Magic.......2007-03-22
I found a promotional copy of this CD set in the "Free To Good Home" box at the radio station where I broadcast a weekly jazz show. The "price" and packaging urged me to bring the CD to my good home. Magic.
I was surprised and captivated on first listen. My wife, who can be a tad skeptical of my music enthusiasms, listened and liked. Magic.
No more than two weeks later Fate and Destiny entered in. I came across a listing for GM&SCOD gig within a sober evening's drive from home.
As another reviewer has noted, the live show is not to be missed. Magic.
Listen, watch and you will know, Josiah and crew have been around the musical block a few times, swam some laps upstream and down, been there , done that yadayada They have emerged a Born Again Band of Beatific Gypsy Mystic Prophet Rockers. Magic.
Not sure your Great Grandmother, or your three year old , would like the CD but, I do think they would enjoy the band's live show. Magic.
You will like the CD. Magic.
Oh goodness.......2006-12-29
I love love love this album. LOVE. As the other reviewer says, 2 discs, no filler, absolutely fantastic. This is the Circus at their most beautiful, and I feel at home listening to this album. I'm sorry my review's not more descriptive than that...
Best album to date...and that's saying something!.......2005-07-13
Flapjacks from the Sky presents The Circus at their creative peak (at least so far as they do rule). It's two discs but no filler...no kidding (if you knew this band you wouldn't be surprised).
The tune "Bike" is a somewhat heart-breaking yet supercharged ode to a boy who's father made him a bike for Christmas but died of cancer before he could give it to him. I know this sounds a bit much, but you have got to hear this! No sticky sentimentality here...just a rockin' track that pumps along as hard as you can envision the kid pumping the bike pedals.
"Living With God" is one of the finest crafted pop tunes you will ever hear. Beautiful lyrics masterfully accompanied by just the right instrumentation. Energized yet not over-powering the mood of the song. It's my favorite so I'm a bit biased...they never play it live though!
"Moon Dog House" and "Glide" are my wife's favorites. Good tunes in their own right. Moon Dog House is kind of funky while Glide is almost like rock/oriental...this shows you the diversity the band is capable of.
I'd never heard "In The Nighttime" before this album, even though it appears to be one of their oldest tunes. It is stunning in it's beauty. So REAL...how refreshing after all the MTV b.s. that's pushed on everyone. Show's early on this band had something special going for it.
I could go on and on but you get the picture. I'm a big fan of this band and they earned it the hard way; compelling live performances that prompted me to get the albums. It's old school musicianship backed up by authentic songwriting talent thanks to Mr. Joziah Longo. You must, must, must see this band live ([...]for a tour schedule). Flapjacks easily gets my vote for best album of 2004.

Bold, ambitious attempt that hits some marks, misses others.......2002-12-06
This is an engaging and unusual integration of Nakai's flute-playing talent with an orchestral accompaniment, creating a romantic, sweeping, and contemplative score that sounds like a motion picture soundtrack in many instances. Nakai's command of the flute never wavers, but sometimes competes, rather than synchronizes with the full-bodied strings that interject themselves almost randomly throughout every piece. When the two mediums cooperate the result is moving and lyrical. One can almost visualize scenes of beauty, mourning, and determination that are the embodiment of Native American existence. But in some places, the music meanders between the two forms creating a neutral, unfocused, and occasionally dispassionate mood.
I applaud Nakai's innovation and experimentation, but I think his strongest work with Western classical music forms is still best demonstrated in his collaborations with pianist Peter Kater, such as "Migrations". Oddly enough, Kater's work with Nakai is not mentioned in the liner notes.
Music to Contemplate By.......2002-12-01
I had never heard any of Nakai's work before buying this CD, so I came to it with no idea of what to expect. The first word that comes to my mind when I play it is "soothing." That describes the first three tracks without need of another word. With the fourth, soft sweeping strings join Nakai's plaintive flute for a feel best described as "floating" or "drifting." The fifth is sweetly mournful. The sixth brings muted brass into play. In the seventh there are moments both majestic and plaintive. And so it goes. This is quiet, thoughtful music, the kind you might play while reading some favorite old "gentle" book or practising your deep breathing. Although I generally prefer more powerful sounds from my stereo, this one is an enjoyable change of pace, and full of Native mysticism.
