I'm always surprised when people remark to me that Alaska seems remote and exotic. Less than a 4 hour flight from San Francisco, there lies a vast area extending west from Juneau - one of the most breathtaking expanses of landscape in the United States. An area rich in marine and terrestrial bird and mammal life, it virtually teams with creature activity each spring and summer. What is especially notable are the voices of whales, seals, and even multi-colored anemones (found in tide pools that line the shore). Drop a hydrophone (underwater mic) in the water and, at any given time, you can hear humpback whales feeding, snapping shrimp, orcas vocalizing, or even the oscillating caudal fins of salmon as they swim by. Glaciers calving and moving over the land's surface are among the more compelling sounds we've captured.WHALES, WOLVES and EAGLES of GLACIER BAY. Few places on earth are as vibrant and dynamic as Alaska. The Southeastern region, especially around Glacier Bay National Park, combines marine and terrestrial life in ways that occur nowhere else on the planet. The magic is heard everywhere - above and below the surface of the water, the forests, the seashore, and even in the tidepools close to shore.
