What does a wildly successful purveyor of `80s big hair power ballads do in an ensuing decade dominated by fervent shoe-gazing and other attendant alt.cliches? If you're Jon Bon Jovi, you scale back your band's ambitions, retool yourself as surprisingly accomplished indie film and TV actor, and (mostly) wait for the pop music tides to turn in your favor again. But JBJ and guitarist/collaborator Richie Sambora didn't let their band's lukewarm `90s fortunes dampen their knack for hook-savvy songcraft, as this muscular anthem-fest argues at virtually every turn. BJ's songs here may be as infectious as ever, yet they're seldom mere confections, often infused with alternating doses of bracing cynicism (the title track's sarcastic riposte to the '04 election) and reflective, often bittersweet takes on histories both personal and otherwise. If it sometimes stoops to formula--the droning, metallic ethos of the obligatory big ballad "I Am" can't overcome some equally perfunctory lyrics-it's also an album with its share of warm surprises, be they unexpected nods to Dylan ("Last Man Standing," the acoustic idealism of "Bells of Freedom"), the hard-edged "I Want to Live" or a winning duet with Sugarland's Jennifer Nettles, "Who Says You Can't Go Home." Bon Jovi may deliver a sonically burnished triumph here by largely going back to the future--yet does it with one ear crucially cocked towards the anxious energy of the recent past. -- Jerry McCulley
Customer Reviews:
Not bad but really not that good.......2007-07-31
Songs I like are Have a nice day, Bells of Freedom and Complicated. Beyond those three, however this CD really is not that good. There is a lot of pent up aggression with the words but the songs are more of some personal kind of vendetta BJ has against certain social and political issues than a collective set of songs created by a team of people. Sambora, well you just may as well have put him on a bus to go down to California and play for David Lee Roth, or anyone who appreciates his talents because the minimal jamming heard here is really a waste of his precious time. Different approach I can handle, but it could have been so much better.
BON JOVI'S NICE DAY IS GOOD ALL YEAR.......2007-07-30
Even with age you cn't beat Bon Jovi. This cd is well worth any price. Great selections!!!
A Masterpiece!!!!.......2007-06-22
Their best stuff ever!!!! Great sound, awesome lyrics! Welcome to Wherever You Are - their best written song ever. I Am, I Want to be Loved, Have a Nice Day, Story of My Life, Bells of Freedom are excellent too! Giddy up!
Have A Nice Day.......2007-06-21
"Now There's the Band - They really Play" Great album and Superb Concert. You guys ROCK!
Morph from Ork.......2007-06-17
Hints of a country band realized.....That said Bon Jovi brings you.....Lost Highway. There have always been overtures towards country music from JBJ from Wanted: Dead or Alive, to The Blaze of Glory soundtrack. You knew, however, that they would be followed up with a Bad Medicine or 99 In The Shade. It is becoming apparent, as they age, that they will rock less and croon more..... Sad but true. JBJ's Slippery When Wet voice abandoned him years ago. He's learned to pick his spots, like an aging fastball pitcher. But....he is from Jersey so...I like him....I'll just listen to SWW and NJ more! Keppin the Faith!

Playing off of Elvis Presley's 1959 album 50 Million Elvis Presley Fans Can't Be Wrong, right down to the gold-lame suits the quartet dons on the cover, stalwart rockers Bon Jovi make a strong case that they're one of the true populist bands of their era with a box set that serves up dozens of previously unheard and seldom heard offerings. Designed as a heaping 20-year anniversary feast for insatiable fans, the four-disc/bonus DVD collection is surprisingly vital and consistent, considering that just about everything included was initially either rejected or related to B-sides and soundtracks. The high quality of these castoffs is attributable to the band's habit of preparing dozens of tracks for each album and cutting loose strong compositions that didn't fit with the theme of the completed product. Thus, some stylistic stretches were left in the vaults (check out the Southside Johnny-style r&b of "Love Ain't Nothing But a Four Letter Word"). Bon Jovi fans will find be delighted by this collection, and even skeptics may find themselves reconsidering these Jersey survivors. --Steven Stolder

Yes, they can be. They are........2007-01-21
For fans, I suppose this would be a rather big delight; for non-fans, it's nothing that will turn you on to the band from Jersey. They had some okay, cheesy hits in the '80s - but listening to some of their modern songs from this collection proves how completely out of touch they are nowadays.
For any Jovi fan..........2007-01-04
How can you not buy this box set? Enough said.

Simply Awesome!.......2006-02-07
I have been a fan since 89 and have of course listened to SWW many, many times. Well, until you listen to the High Resolution 5.1 mix of SWW contained on this disc on a good home theatre setup, you have not heard this album at it's best.
The High Resolution 5.1 mix just blows me away in terms of it's clarity and the separation of vocals (both main and backing) and instruments. Jon's voice sounds fantastic. As a bonus virtually every track has been tweaked or remixed to some extent - some more than others ie Livin On A Prayer, Raise Your Hands, Never Say Goodbye. But listen carefully, you'll be pleasantly surprised by all the subtle differences in the tracks.
If you have the right equipment, you should definately get this version of the album. You will not be dissapointed!
I'm just hoping that Island Records release both the New Jersey and Keep The Faith albums in this format. Now, that would be heaven!
5.1 Wins Again!.......2006-01-16
Anyone who listens to 5.1 surround version of albums already knows how much better it makes the music sound. This album is no exception. Although it seems to lack in bass, it was nice to hear alternate versions of the songs that appear on the original album, most having a longer play time. Add to that the videos that were included and you have yourself a great little "Slippery When Wet" package. And I can't forget to credit the often-too-greedy record companies for releasing this DualDisc at an excellent price!
The Magic Still Flows..........2005-11-27
These guys have kept the magic flowing through my senses...straight to the heart. Amazing would be just a small word to appreciate....
Slippery When Wet.......2005-10-26
It is a classic record and now you have the video's on the other side.
It sends me back in time and I just love it!!!!!
I gotta admit.......2005-10-06
I have to say first off I am not really a Bon Jovi fan ,but my wife is a fan so I do hear her playing their music in our home.
That being said, I like to think I am a savvy audio fan. I started out with a small 5.1 system 3 years ago and have continually upgraded by reading different articles and attending trade shows and also by shopping at high end audio visual stores. I love the system we now have even though it cost me an arm and a leg. My wife bought a dual disc version of Slippery so she could listen to it in surround and I have to say strickley from an 5.1 listening experence it is the most exciting cd/dvd I have listened to. Up until now I thought Dark Side of the Moon was the bench mark for contemporary music in 5.1 but this dual disc has now moved into first place for me. There is so much depth and clarity to the mixes, I can't believe I haven't known about their 5.1 catalogue before. If your an audiophile give this a listen, you'll love it. Oh yeah.. Living on a Prayer really does rock. Hope this helps..

Customer Reviews:
Great stuff!.......2002-10-24
Erich kunzel has recorded a wonderfully exhilerating item this time! Wonderfully exhuberant is mild compared to the lively playing Kunzel always gets from this great orchestra! Arrangements are mostly by Tommy Newsome who knows how to write charts of varying degrees of excellence, particularly the winsome "Girl from Ipanema" which compliments the lyrics endless reflections on a beautiful, bikini-clad young woman. "Sweet and Gentle" is a saucy number while Eric Knight, the only arranger to get the Boston Pops under Fiedler to swing to new heights, contributes an unforgettably boisterous account of "Lambada." The sound is full of punch and contrast. And Doc Severinsen plays in "Virgen" a marvelous soloistic stratospheric account. My advice is to buy this immediately. It's one hot album!
Wonderful arrangements of music from all over the world........2001-10-26
Telarc and Eric Kunzel never fail to amaze at the quality of their selections.
Even tough some of the arrangements here have a little too much
fanfare at the start they are still great to listen to.
Most of these melodies you have heard them at least once in you life. And they are reproduced here with the Kunzel magic.
Beautiful collection of Music.......2001-10-26
A Beautiful collection of music from all over the world.
(latin world that is)
I little grandiose on some selections (that's kunzel) but GREAT nonetheless.

Customer Reviews:
The Greatest brass ensemble..........2007-01-19
Philip Jones brass ensemble shows you musicality on a high level. The feelings they are playing with are suberb...music is feelings, not technical.
Buy it...
Nothing better than this!.......2006-07-11
There are many brass recordings available today with ensembles which are even technically more advanced, but nothing can compare with Philip Jones, because the PJBE is not only pure precision playing, it's musicality too and it's smart arranging. Jones understands how to use the characteristics of each instrument. He lets room for Tuba or Horn too, its not just Trumpet always playing the big parts like Empire Brass does.
Welcome Back PJBE.......2001-10-19
It is ironic that London/Decca waited until many of the important members of the Philip Jones Brass Ensemble were dead before finally releasing this collection of highlights from the ensemble's considerable catalog. Don't misunderstand me! I am thankful for this substantial 2 cd set. For fans of the PJBE there is real cause for celebration; and for those who are just discovering the work of this important brass ensemble, you are in for a treat.
The remastering is first rate and you can't beat the 2-fer pricing. Get this set while its available because the wait for more will at best be a long one. Thankfully, I still have most of the PJBE recordings on vinyl and a good turntable for playing them. But I would still be near the head of the line to snatch up any subsequent reissues. Years ago I saw several of their recordings on cd, but foolishly passed on them, thinking they would be in circulation for awhile. Silly me. Like I said, grab this before they post the infamous notice "no longer available."
When the PJBE made it's first American tour back in the 70s I was already a huge fan. I went to hear them play, never expecting the concert to sound as good as the recordings. They opened with the Tylman Susato Renaissance Suite and their playing immediately blew away any Memorex memories of their recordings. Unfortunately, we will never again hear live such virtuosity and musicianship. The recordings DO serve as a fine memory of the first and foremost brass ensemble.
Great start! Now where is the rest?.......2001-05-31
I have always been a huge fan of the Philip Jones Brass Ensemble. They set a very high standard of playing and the recordings, most of which are not available on CD, are excellent.
Where are their landmark recordings of such works as the Hindemith works for brass ensembles: Concert music for strings and brass, Morgenmusik for brass, Concert music for piano, brass and harps which they played flawlessly?
Where is their outstanding recording of the Gunther Schuller Symphony for Brass?
Please, Decca, give us more of the full course, not merely the teasers and encores.

Product Description
The London Horn Sound builds on the extraordinary tradition of French Horn playing in London (formerly the home to the talents of Dennis Brain, Alan Civil and Barry Tuckwell) and brings together for the first time, today's generation of world-class London-based players including Richard Bissell, Nigel Black, Anthony Halstead, Frank Lloyd, David Pyatt, Hugh Seenan, Michael Thomson and Richard Watkins. From Mozart to Queen, Rossini to Ellington, with a tip of the hat to film soundtracks in the shape of James Horner's fantasy from the box office smashing epic movie Titanic, complemented by deft and sensitive arrangements this is a truly unique showcase for the cream of the London crop.
Customer Reviews:
Great sounds!.......2006-06-16
Love this CD! Feel in love with it from the first hearing! The Titanic fantasy is wonderful, perhaps a tad long, but wonderful just the same. I got used to the flat high D after a couple hearings. The Hansel und Gretel is nice, but arranged a whole step below the original key, and it looses a little luster. There is a wonderful published 8 part arrangement of this in the original key that I think is better.
The jazz/swing tunes are wonderful. Uses of stopped horn to simulate muted trumpets are quite effective. I also like the use of percussions throughout the disc. I think Caravan is my favorite track.
I just received the Take 9 CD today, and I didn't have the WOW feeling as I didn't when I first heard the London Horn Sound. There are many more tracks on the London CD that I will continue to listen to. The arrangements, I feel, better handle variations of texture and timbre of the homogeneous sound of a horn section. And besides...who cares about the Grand Canyon Suite??
Take 9 arrangement choices are boring.
Its alright.......2005-12-15
This CD has some really beautiful playing, but a lot of the selections are cheesy. i.e. Titanic. They might as well have hired Celine Dion to sing along with them. And although there are some real "wow" moments like when you listen to Caravan for the first time, (The lead horns sound like the trumpet section in a jazz band), overall, the Cd isn't that exciting to listen to more than once. On the other hand, Take 9 is a CD featuring the American Horn Quartet & The Horns of the NY Philharmonic. Not only do they kill the Londoners with their technique and intonation, but the repertoire better suits the medium than lame pop fantasies. Of note is the orchestral transcription of Overture to Candide. I say transcription because yes, they even play the flute and clarinet solos in the correct octave. TAKE 9 Check it out!
absolutely Inspirational.......2005-10-11
This is THE CD I listen to on the way to rehearsal. It truly inspires me to do my absolute best! You've got to love Roman Carnival - so excellent! I would recommend this CD to anyone, especially horn and brass players. These performers are just phenomenal. What else is there to say?
Heaven on Earth.......2005-08-02
This CD is incredible. The horn is shown for all it is worth. From the beauty of the "Titanic" Fantasy and Hansel and Gretel to the latin Tico-Tico, jazz of Ellington in Caravan and the incredible rendition of Bohemian Rhapsody, the horn proves it is not as limited an instrument as some may think. Both the high and low ends of the horn are highlighted. Simply heavenly. If you like horn playing at all or even if you don't, you will want to give this CD a listen. It is well worth your time and money.
A fun and inspirational listen.......2005-05-06
I love this CD. In addition to showing off some of the finest horn playing I've ever heard, there's something here for every musical taste. My favorite track is without question the Titanic Fantasy...I'm a French horn major at the moment, and whenever I really, really don't want to practice, I pull out this CD and listen to that song. It gets me up and going nine times out of ten. It's worth listening to just to hear that final high D...absolutely heavenly!

Customer Reviews:
Superb except for the Sound Quality!.......2006-05-10
I both love and detest this album. The title is correct. Mendez's virtuosity is legendary and the playing is great. The problem is with the quality of the recording. I don't know if that is an artifact of the originals or if it is an artifact of sloppy production for this release. In any event, it is disappointing.
The selections somewhat varied in style but ultimately all scream "Latin Trumpet". This is as true of LA VIRGIN DE LA MACARENA as it is of the selections from the opera, CARMEN. In all of them, the skill is superb. I just wish the recordings were as well.
I give it 5 stars for the art and 2 stars for the sound. I compromise with 4 because, deep down, I love it.
The Greatest Trumpet player ever.......2005-09-19
Not to many people will argue that Rafael Mendez was the
greatest Trumpet player ever..yes better than M.Davis, Hirt,
Gillespie, Severson. This is a must own if you really want
to hear the greatest.
"Today, I had the honor of becoming an American citizen".......2004-03-20
This recording is fantastic in every way. Mendez is truly one of the greatest to ever pick up a trumpet. From the outstanding renditions of latin classics "Tico Tico", "La Virgen De Macarena" and "Mexican Hat Dance" (which are all un-paralleled) to the flawless "Flight Of The Bumblebee" to the heartstring-pulling gem written by Leroy Anderson, "Trumpeter's Lullaby", this album is simply mint. As good as it gets. Mendez also plays amazing versions of "Danse Boheme" from Carmen, his own classic composition "Samba Gitana" and the grand finale, "Zigeunerweisen". However, the most touching moment comes on the live performance of "La Rosita", where Mendez plays wonderfully and then reveals his citizenship. He even plays some great big band with a latinized "I Know That You Know". That sound, the articulation is so crisp and perfect. Mendez is truly a legend. Any trumpet fan needs this.
Masterful Trumpet Virtuoso.......2001-04-11
The name Rafael Mendez is synonymous with trumpet virtuosity, and this CD provides ample evidence as to why. The clarity and technique of the performances are astounding and constitute a must-hear CD.
The one down side is that these were originally 78 rpm recordings from the 40's and 50's, and, as such, the sound quality leaves something to be desired. But don't be put off by that. The greatness of the performances still comes through.
Supurb Virtuoso.......2001-01-09
As a youth I had the wonderful opportunity to play in an orchestra which provided the accompaniment for several of Mr. Mendez's concets. I have never been in such awe of anyone before or since. There are no words to describe the command he has over the trumptet. There never has been anyone who even approaches his expertise and his virtuosity is timeless. The selections on this CD are many of the best he ever recorded and display his incredible ability in every style...every range. If you are not familiar with Mr. Mendez, this CD will make a believer out of you. You will be amazed at what a trumpet is capable of producing. I can't say enough about this incredible man's incredible talent. I don't know of any musician, trumpet or otherwise, who has the complete mastery of his instrument that Mr. Mendez does. NOTE: This recording was remastered and unfortunately, not very well. It is tinny and very "mono" sounding. Thus the 4 stars.

This Dual Disc edition also features all album tracks but one in High Resolution Surround Sound as well as the video for "Have a Nice Day" and an `04 Live From Atlantic City featurette with six live cuts. -- Jerry McCulley
Album Description
Dualdisc featuring: Bon Jovi EPK - Behind The Scenes Video for "Have a Nice Day" 5 Live Performances (video) taped from Atlantic City show in November 2004. Songs include "Everyday", "Fourth of July", "I Get a Rush", "These Arms are Open all Night", and "Radio Saved My Life".
Customer Reviews:
An Album in the Same Style as This Left Feels Right Doesn't Crack it With Original Songs.......2006-09-03
I was very disappointed with the latest album from Bon Jovi, a band that has put out numerous exceptionally high quality albums throughout their career. Obviously no one still expects them to put out albums today that set the scene of what is cool music wise, that they did back in the 80's and early 90's with the classics such as Slippery When Wet, New Jersey and Keep the Faith. Obviously like everyone else from that era they rely on the next generation to tell them what is the latest rage music wise but this album music wise doesn't seem to fall into the latest style or ignore the latest trends and maintain their classic sound.
The album is like a continuation sound wise of their previous album This Left Feels Right, which was a greatest hits album rerecorded with their classic songs in a way that emphasised their lyrics. That was great for the classics songs hearing them in a new way but this style for a whole album of new songs really doesn't do anything for me or anyone else I've come across. Have a Nice Day is catchy and fast enough to be a great live song and it'll be around for a while if not forever but I don't think in five years time any other song from this album, like with other mediocre albums like Crush and Bounce will be played on the radio or at a Bon Jovi concert (and make sure you go to one of these before you or they die as they are the best live band one earth). I hope that the guys have a few more good albums left in them but this certainly is not an indication that they do.
A great album, the New Jersey guys keep rockin.......2006-08-07
I bought this album the day it came out, and have not grown tired of it yet. After "this left feels right", I feared bon jovi might be changing direction again, but nope, this album got them back to true form and rock. As their albums before, they use Rock, as well as the Ballad, in its pure form to make some great songs. And who else is a better master than Jon Bon Jovi at writing a love song. I loved their Crush album, and bouce was decent, and this one I would rate in the middle of those two. Great bonus DVD feature of this dual disc with video footage of the band and the "have a nice day" video as well. Another great album, and a must for the Bon Jovi fan. How can you turn away from that evil Smiley face at the store, it'll come get you if you don't buy this album.
Love this one!!.......2006-07-21
This is one of their best CDs! Great songs and I like the duet with Jennifer Nettles better than the version with just JBJ singing. I saw them Wed. at Giants Stadium and they were amazing! If you get the chance to see them tour this year in support of this CD, you will love it.
21 & i know it's real.......2006-03-06
Im a pretty young Bon Jovi fan, From the time I would pretend I was fainting to the 1986 VHS of the Slippery When Wet tour until now...the media has taken so much away from what is really down home song writing. People can say what they want about songs sounding alike or words being the same but thats what makes it real. It's definately music from the souls of these guys who have had a career like no other. just because they were never busted for cocaine or went on crazy Heroin binges doesn't make them any less of an awesome Rock and Roll band...Have A Nice Day is I guess what we can call a better album from the group only because I think the pain that went into making Bounce was just too much for some of us tri-state area people to take in, it was an awful time but never the less...They are the sounds of us...with a Journey, Bruce Springsteen kinda sound...When I hear them I will forever think of Jersey & growing up on the shore...Bon Jovi is New Jersey!.....ALL there music ROCKS!!!!
LOVE THEM. LOVE IT!!!.......2006-02-27
Bon Jovi fans you will not be dissapointed. It's one of their best CDs. If this is your first Bon Jovi CD, good pick. The songs in here are great. THere are only 2 I can't get into.
Have a Nice day... Great song. Picks you up. Really great.
I want to be loved.... really nice.
Welcome to wherever you are.... My favorite. Listen to the words, enjoy the song.
Who says you can't go home.... It's catchy. You'll sing it all day.
Last man standing... I didn't like this one at first. I thought it was a goodbye song from the band. But after the concert I really like it.
Bells of freedom... one of the two I don't like.
Wildflower... it's ok. not one of my faves.
Last cigarette... the 2nd of the ones I don't like.
I am.. Great ballad. Loved it. One of those ballads you can scream/sing in your car alone.
Complicated. ... LOVE IT!! Another great car loud song. Will break a bad day.
Novocaine... great!! Awesome for that person who did you wrong and you want to curse them out. LOVED IT
Story of my life... softer but good.
And the duet.. also good, I really like this one. I've seen the video so many times She ( jennifer) feels like part of the band.
So Buy it, Sing it, LIsten to the words, enjoy the melodies.
You will not be dissapointed.
