Product Description

With 6 albums under her belt, an active touring career throughout the U.S. and a string of accolades from the likes of The Washington Post, The Village Voice and The New Yorker, Susan Werner has become one of the defining artists of the folk music genre. Her songs effortlessly slide between folk, jazz and pop, and are delivered with a sassy wit and classic mid-western charm. Her new album "The Gospel Truth" explores the role of the Church in contemporary American life. Quite possibly the first "agnostic gospel" album, her new songs speak in a wide variety of voices, from faithful and traditional to the critical and even the unconvinced.

5 out of 5 stars Definitely check this one out!.......2007-07-29

Susan Werner and the Gospel Truth is truly a gem. If you know her work already, then this is a no brainer, get it and you will enjoy it. If you are not familiar with her, then you are in for a treat. Susan is a real piece of work, I saw her at the World Cafe Live when she introduced The Gospel Truth and it was a performance to remember. Don't expect to take this one to your church group, but if you have a sense of humor and appreciate the role of religion in our lives go for it!

In Lonely Planets, astronomer David Grinspoon is buoyantly optimistic about the possibility that we are not alone in the universe. Grinspoon, who serves as principal scientist in the Department of Space Studies at the Southwest Research Institute, lays out a detailed but not boring case for life on other planets, dropping authoritative quotes and goofy footnotes in equal measure. The Grinspoon family hung out with Carl Sagan and other astronomical royalty, giving young David an early appreciation for SETI and the heady astrobiological theorizing of the 1970s. In the 21st century, scientists are still split on the question of extraterrestrial life. Grinspoon believes that a "natural philosophy" approach is the key to furthering our knowledge in this field, since there is precious little evidence with which to apply the scientific method. Instead of looking for the familiar and testable, he writes, we should expect the unexpected.

Expecting to find DNA elsewhere is like expecting a Star Trek universe with humanoid aliens who speak English and insist that we join them for dinner at eight.

Lonely Planets is a substantial book, covering the origins of life on Earth as well as the changes in religious and social thought that have affected astronomers' search for other planets and their theoretical inhabitants. Grinspoon's style is exuberant, even a little cocky, and the result is delightful readability. Lonely Planets lets readers share the dismay of finding out there are probably no Martians and the thrill of wondering if there might be Europans. "I think our galaxy is full of species," writes Grinspoon. "The wise ones are out there waiting for us to join them." --Therese Littleton

    Book Description

It's been nearly four decades since Carl Sagan first addressed the general public from a scientist's perspective, confronting the possibility of extraterrestrial life. David Grinspoon, a planetary scientist who has helped to shape modern planetary exploration, brings the subject to a new generation of readers with his reflections on the most recent developments in astrobiology, including NASA's search for life on Mars. In Lonely Planets, he investigates the big questions: How widespread are life and intelligence in the cosmos? Is life on Earth an accident or in some sense the "purpose" of this universe? And how can we, working from the Earth-centric definition of "life," even begin to think about the varieties of life-forms on other planets?

Using the topic of extraterrestrial life as a mirror with which to view human beliefs, evolution, history, and aspirations, Grinspoon provides an authoritative scientific narrative of cosmic evolution, along with provocative ruminations on how we fit into the story of the universe. An accessible, lively blend of science, history, philosophy, and personal narrative, Lonely Planets reveals how the search for extraterrestrial life unites our spiritual and scientific quests for connection with the cosmos.

      Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Great material from one the best bands these days.......2007-08-04

This cd is just incredible, I can't stop listening over and over again; great lyrics, great guitars ..drums..and everything, the whole thing it really works. And also I have to say that I just love the production, it sounds "actual" within forget the essential things that a mix needs, and I'm talking about personality and character.
CIRCA SURVIVE keep the good work !!!

      4 out of 5 stars A new direction.......2007-06-25

Circa Survive's Juturna left a lot of people schocked because literally out of nowhere, one of today's most talented bands was born. Now, Circa Survive have released their eagerly-awaited follow-up to Juturna, and does it live up to the expectations?

The album starts off with one of Circa Survive's best tracks "Living Together" which showcases some nice guitar melodies and leads. Anthony Green still shows off his vocal talents in the same manner as the previous album, while still writing captivating lyrics. The drums are still as present as ever with the odd-time signatures that constitute Circa's trademark. The drummer especially stands out in the track "The difference between medicine and poison is in the dose" where he leads off in a 16th note beat on the hi-hat.

However, this release just doesn't have the same feeling as Juturna which had an overall mood and just flowed with not a false note. Here, the band tries out some different directions with songs like "mandala" or "Kicking Your Crosses Down" which are honestly skip tracks. We just feel in these songs that Circa isn't as confident as in their other songs. In Juturna, every song was a standout and every song had a different effect on the listener. For this release, all songs are good but only a few stand out as being classic Circa Survive tracks.

That is not to say the record is not good, obviously it is phenomenal and definitely refreshing due to its unequaled originality. It also has that unique atmosphere that makes Circa Survive so special.

The artwork of the album is also very original with very beautiful drawings and nice fold-out pages which definitely add on to the evasive mood that Circa create through their art.

Overall, I would definitely recommend all Circa Survive fans to get their hands on this new release. Indeed, I may have found this release weaker than Juturna but some people may like it more, it's up to you. But one thing is for sure, it's that Circa Survive are definitely a stand-out band who are gonna be here a long time and that it will take a long time before another band bursts out onto the scene and surprises thousands of listeners in the way this band did.

Standout tracks include: "Living Together" , "Carry Us Away" and "Your Friends Are Gone"

      5 out of 5 stars wow.......2007-06-21

You guys saying you didn't like mandala or kick your crosses down are insane. Crosses is probably my favorite song.

This record is epic, almost mars volta like. This is an experience. This band is so exciting to be a part of. I don't listen to much rock anymore but I was so happy when I heard this album last week. The vocals mesh SO WELL with the beautiful guitarwork. I just cannot say how impressed I am.

The album creates a very atmoshperic mood for me, and is very psychedelic (Green does a lot of drugs - I saw him play on mushrooms once), so the creativity just oozes out of every pore. Do yourself a favor and listen to this asap.

4 out of 5 stars Juturna Still Owns This...But Good Nonetheless.......2007-06-13

This CD contains the greatest Circa song I've ever heard, "Living Together". Absolutely gorgeous tune.

This album really has a few standout tracks but some of them seem kind of repetitive (Tracks 2 and 3 especially).

Juturna was definitely a more solid album all the way through. I would not put this CD off nonetheless, it has some really solid tunes and Kicking Your Crosses Down has one of the prettiest hooks ever.

5 out of 5 stars Worth the wait.......2007-05-31

It's been two years since "Juturna" and Circa Survive has been busy with tour after tour. I was nervous about this album because the guys haven't had much down time, but "On Letting Go" doesn't disappoint. Anthony Green's lyrics and vocals are as close to perfect as possible, and guitars and drums have improved greatly since their first record. "On Letting Go" is amazing from start to finish, and it's a welcome reminder that good music still exists. Lonely Planet Western Europe

                  Book Description

Backpacking through Europe for the first time changes your life. New friendships are forged over a bottle of cheap wine; old friends go their separate ways; you fall in love in the first town and forget about it in the second. You get bored with wearing the same clothes, tired of sleeping in crowded dorms…yet you still have an unforgettable, fantastic time.

In Rite of Passage, backpackers taking their all-important first visit to Europe tell it like it really is. They describe crossing the language barrier in Corfu, meeting the locals in Prague, surviving hostel life in London, finding love in Paris and overindulging in Greece.

Rite of Passage is the perfect companion for backpackers - the stories are raw and fresh, inspirational and honest, and cut straight to the heart of the European travel experience.

Lonely Planet guides pride themselves on going places few other guidebooks ever venture--you'll find Lonely Planet guides to Antarctica, Papua New Guinea, and Cambodia, to name only a few of their more far-flung destinations. But even when this series is covering a more popular destination such as Western Europe, the spirit of discovery that imbues more obscure titles is still present. In Lonely Planet Western Europe on a Shoestring the authors and researchers have done their best to make budget travel both fun and fulfilling. There's plenty of back story on every destination, practical information about embassies, newspapers, bookshops, and medical and emergency services plus comprehensive coverage of sights and entertainments. Though the book is primarily geared toward budget travelers, the authors do include the occasional splurge. Best of all, the book contains 200 detailed maps and brief language guides in the back to French, Dutch, German, Italian, Greek, Spanish, and Portuguese. Whether you're planning a whirlwind tour of 12 European countries in three weeks or intending to stay awhile, Lonely Planet Western Europe will get you started out on the right foot.

For years, Lonely Planet resisted pressure to cram the whole of Europe into a single guide. To the delight of backpackers everywhere, they've finally given in--with a vengeance. The first edition of Europe on a Shoestring packs 40 countries into 1,200 pages, while still finding room to brief you on all the aspects of pretrip preparation, from packing right to finding the best airfares.

Of course, given Lonely Planet's youthful irreverence, you shouldn't expect your grandfather's Europe. Coverage of traditional favorites like England is trimmed to make room for pocketbook-friendly destinations in Turkey, Morocco, and the Baltic states. The Eastern Europe coverage journeys beyond the tourist-thronged streets of Prague to lesser-known gems like Riga and Vilnius. Lonely Planet even covers the former Yugoslavia, as it slowly begins to emerge from its days as a war-torn no man's land. No matter where you are, the guide points out regional highlights to help you sift through its wealth of information.

As the name implies, Europe on a shoestring focuses on "budget" travel. Fear not--you needn't resign yourself to meals of bread and water and endless nights on the floor of a seedy flophouse. The 30-odd book contributors believe it's possible to travel cheaply without sacrificing style, comfort, and safety. Though the accommodations sections focus on hostels, there are enough bed-and-breakfasts and guesthouses to keep you a safe distance from rowdy spring breakers, if you so desire. Similarly, the entertainment sections offer everything from pubs packed with rowdy Australian backpackers to the finest theater, opera, and ballet in the world.

If you want to take on only a part of the continent, you're still better off with a less comprehensive guide. But if you're interested in exploring St. Paul's Cathedral, St. Petersburg's Hermitage, and everything in between, this book gives you all you need to see Europe on your own terms. --Andrew Nieland

His astounding voice is surrounded by amazing musical production from noted producers Matt Bronleewe (Rebecca St. James, Chris Tomlin, Michael W. Smith) and Nathan Nockels (Watermark, Phillips Craig & Dean, Passion Worship Band, Matt Redman).

The first song I heard of AE was Be Still, and I didn't know who he was at the time, but I loved the song, then my brother started playing the same song and told me who he was and started playing more songs from his new cd and I immediately went to this website to purchase BOTH cd's. One of the things I love about his second cd is his lyrics!! They are AMAZING!! They portray the Lord and our relationship with Him accurately and biblically-very rare in Gospel and Christian music! I haven't heard his first cd yet(hasn't come in yet), but I do agree that it does have more of a CCM feel which is cool with me. I definitely wanted more of the "Be Still" kind of feel, but I love this cd! I haven't stopped playing it since I got it! His voice is AMAZING!! Excellent job, Anthony! Keep'em comin'! The world needs more artists painting accurate pictures of our Dad!

                          5 out of 5 stars Crosses Generations.......2007-02-19

I am a -- year old mom and grandmom. I prefer to listen to Christian music, but my taste ranges from Southern Gospel to contemporary. Was looking for some good worship music and stumbled across Anthony Evans' music at his father, Tony Evans', website. Just hearing a short excerpt of one song from his first CD, I liked it enough to buy both CD's. This one is different from the first, more upbeat and diverse, but I love them both. I thought so much of Letting Go that I bought one for my twenty-something son, who also thought it was great. You will not be disappointed!

                          5 out of 5 stars WOW!!.......2006-11-28

Let me just put it like this. I do agree with the other users that this album is much different from the first one. What I will say is that he(Anthony Evans) seems more comfortable with this style of music. Long have I been waiting for an artist who dares to be different for Christ without compromising the message. My favorite track is "Consumed," the boy gets down on this album in a unique way. If your tastes are not opened up to different styles of gospel music, then this may not be the CD for you at this point. To everyone else who has an open mind, go get this CD. My only regret is that it only has 10 tracks, but I would rather there be ten great tracks then a bunch of filler songs. This is AE's best album yet.

5 out of 5 stars LOVE, LOVE, LOVE, LOVE, LOVE.......2006-08-11

I just got this CD a day ago and I am so in Love with it. I love almost every song. I just play this ablum straight through, for the most part. My fav. tracks are I Choose Now, Letting Go, Before You, Consumed, Meaningless, Love You With My Life, Whatever I Can't Erase, The Fight. Anthony Evans is a great writer and he composes lyrics so well. This album is annointed and you can just feel his passion for the Lord in every song. I can honestly say that I can relate to every song on his album. Anthony if you are reading this keep allowing the Lord to use you the way he wants to, this album truely touched me.

                          5 out of 5 stars Liked It!!!!.......2006-05-01

I enjoyed the CD very much. The music is just a bit different from his first album, but the lyrics on songs like "Consumed" and "Whatever I can't Erase" certainly touched me deeply. Especially the beautiful viloin that opens the song, "Whatever I can't Erase" and the soulful beat to "Consumed." For me, it's a must buy...
