Orginal music by a master.......2003-09-07
"Bare Wires" and "Blues from Laurel Canyon" form a pair of albums, that even though differing in personnel and approach, represented a new kind of music, a fusion of blues, rock and jazz into something modern and lush. At this particular point in his life, John Mayall was absolutely on fire creatively, evidenced by the speed in which this record was written and peformed.
It happens every now and then like that, the Muse just touches someone for awhile. It couldn't have happened to a more deserving musician, as Mayall, though conceited and a little on the dramatic side, was a innovator and a tireless promoter of blues music. These albums are his life acheivement, though I'm sure he had no notion at the time they would be his zenith.
MOTTS FROM PATTAYA BEACH.......2002-01-12
This fine collection of songs, could well have been subtitled "Thoughts of an English Gentleman on holiday in America", as this album is the story of John Mayall's 3 week vacation in Los Angeles, written between the break up of his ambitious large entourage of the Blues Breakers which had just recently released "Bare Wires" (most of whom went off to form the wonderful Colloseum) & this solo effort.
One of the most amazing things about this album is that the whole thing was recorded in 3 days, between 26th & 28th August 1968 at Decca's London studios, the band had been together only 2 weeks, but sound as if they've been playing for year's, only Mick Taylor remained from the previous line - up, making him a veteran by Mayall's standards, his previous two guitarist's having lasted an album each, (Eric Clapton for "Blues Breakers" leaving to form Cream & Peter Green for "Hard Road" leaving to form Fleetwood Mac). After this album Colin Allen would move on to rattle the traps with Scottish Rockers "Stone the Crow's, whilst of course the Glimmer twins would come in to smuggle away Mick Taylor for the Rolling Stones, leaving Mayall in his perpetual quest for new & inspiring musicians.
The songs are laid out in chronological order from arrival to departure, and the results of their labours has brought forth some wonderful fruit. Mick Taylor was never to better his licks here, the introduction to "The Bear" (Mayalls take of his exploits on the town in Los Angeles with American Bluesters Canned heat) is worth the price of the album on its own, also the soloing from both the guitarist and Mayall himself on the closing jam of "Fly Tomorrow" should stand as a monument of how to lay bare your soul for the rest of time. Peter Green makes a guest appearance on the atmospheric "First Time Alone", add Mayall's trademark mouth harp and the standard of musicianship is very high indeed. The lyrics by the nature of the songs are very self indulgent, but then you can't have everything, and lets face, it you can only write about what you know.
For those not famililiar with the works of Mr. Mayall this is a good entry point, but be prepared for a bumpy side, as his style changes dramatically over the years.
Out of interest a few other musicians who at sometime were in John Mayall's Blue Breakers reads like a who's who of the British Blues boom, including Jack Bruce, John McVie, Mick Fleetwood, Jon Hiseman, Aynsley Dunbar, Hughie Flint, Coco Montoya, and of course to complete the Cream connection for one gig Ginger Baker.
Mott the Dog.
One of my old time favorites.......2002-01-02
I first got this album when I was an impressionable seventeen year old. At that age I found the entire story of a summer vacation in a far away country very much parallel to my own summer vacation in Europe that year. Besides that I found that Mick Taylor has played some of his best solos on this record. The solo on "Long gone midnight" is still one of my favorites.
Flexfit materials.......2001-12-25
This album, well where to begin? It's a candid depiction of John Mayal's best work. Anyone who is anyone could agree that this is a wide range of beauty and a deep array of some of the most splendid, auxilerating musical artwork ever seen before by human ears. "Hero at 2401" shivers up the spine. "take ME to your Medicine man" please, it's a fab 4 all the way. John Mayall- I love you! -joe

Excellent Combo of Past and Present Music.......2005-11-20
Laurel Canyon is an excellent movie enhanced by a wonderful soundtrack. The soundtrack is an excellent combination of past and present music enabling the listener to re-live the strong emotions generated by the movie. Even if you haven't seen the movie you will find yourself singing along to many of the tracks. Great fun !
Where the movie falls short, the soundtrack excels.......2004-12-07
Although Laurel Canyon the movie was a bit of disappointment character- and plot-wise, it never fell short of perfect on a purely technical level. This great sountrack is yet another evidence of that: here you have everything, from the hip Jesus and Mary Chain-inspired opening track to the retro French song (track #13), which is also kinda interesting. I guess they couldn't secure the rights for Serge Gainsbourg's sleazy 'Bonnie and Clyde', so you're out of luck if you're buying the album for this song alone. Overall, a cool hip androgenous soundtrack album for a modern-day urban sophisticate.
Yeah, where's "Bonnie and Clyde"?.......2004-11-29
I agree with a previous reviewer who said that Serge Gainsbourg's "Bonnie and Clyde" (with Brigitte Bardot) ought to definitely be on this CD.
I don't recall Eartha Kitt's track being in the movie.
Great soundtrack, but I won't get it.
(I just watched the movie -- I was really taken by that Gainsbourg thing.)
Delivers through to the end!.......2004-08-23
This is the first CD I have bought in a long time that was actually devoid of "filler material".
Granted, you really need to see the movie to get the whole experience, but this CD would work well enough on its own.
I challenge anyone to listen to Mercury Rev's "In a funny way" and not be singing it to themselves for days.
From this spellbing beginning, through the Butthole's "the Shame of life", right on through the final track, this CD sets a mood, or should I say tone (or both). It just goes to show that quality music exists within a myriad of genres.
Buy it, live it, love it.
Wow; what a mix!.......2004-06-23
I got the Laurel Canyon Soundtrack and sort of put it aside and never listened to it, just being content having a part of the movie that I adore. Recently, however, I took it out of its case, brought it out to my little car, put it in the CD player, and listened to it on my way to work.
Boy, I was glad that I did.
The weather here has just turned to summer. With my windows rolled down, I turned up the music, and it really felt like summer. I'm not saying that if you buy this CD, you will embody the spirit of summer. Rather, it's a great CD to play during the season (and out of, too).
The music reminds me of, namely, Laurel Canyon the movie - a place that is eternally steamily warm and beautiful. Moreover, you can definitely tell that the music is from an arthouse, independent film, ranging from pop, to psychadelic, to fictitous, to French, to mellow. Definitely an original mix. You will be surprised by each and every song on the disc.
I definitely recommend if you enjoyed the film.

I use this CD in my classroom. Very uplifting and makes people smile! My dogs love it too! I actually enjoy listening to it in my car while driving to our doggy walk areas!
Classic 'must have' for the dog lover!.......2007-01-15
This CD rocks, big time! It is hilarious, and your dog will indeed perk up to the tunes. Our corgi loves to listen to it, and so do we.
The dogs were listening!.......2007-01-10
My three Border Collies found this CD very interesting. They were captivated initially by the "squeaky toy" song, cocking their heads and nosing my speakers. One tried to go behind the speaker to find the toy - the pup raced to the toy box, found his favorite toy, and squeaked along with the song! There was interest from the dogs in most of the songs, but they lost interest, until I played various tracks a few at a time. None was as successful as the "squeaky toy" song, however. I think this is a very good CD to be played when the human is around to urge the dogs on.
Great CD!.......2007-01-09
My dog Toodles LOVES this music, he listens (Yes, really listens) daily. He looks looks so happy while it's playing!
Songs To Make Dogs Happy.......2006-08-23
I ordered two CD's. One for me and one for my Mother who has a little dog who suffers from separation anxiety. Both CD's on arrival skipped terribly. You could not understand any songs. I was so disappointed! I had to package them up for return for refund. Susan Kimes

Chow down at the Merchant's Lunch.......2006-02-21
Bluegrass, Memphis blues, and New Orleans jazz dumped in a blender with a little country redneck humor--I LOVE this band.
Truly Unique Fun .......2005-12-11
The Red Clay Ramblers are simply the most fun band I've ever heard, and I've heard a lot of fun bands. Twisted Laurel and Merchants Lunch are their most accessible work, and easily their two best albums.
Their first release was a self-titled album issued on the Folkways label in 1974 "with Fiddlin' Al McCanless". The following year saw their first Flying Fish album, Stolen Love, and the liner notes from that LP reveal that the band was formed in the fall of 1972, and initially consisted of Bill Hicks, Tommy Thompson and Jim Watson. According to the notes by Bill Hicks, Mike Craver joined the band one year later, bringing with him "a fresh and exciting sensibility towards all sorts of traditional music... Though the band had a name before Mike joined, it was he who completed the circle and filled out the range of musical interests and potentials which the four of us had in common".
Much of the output of The Red Clay Ramblers consists of "old-timey" songs originally recorded by the pioneers of early recorded music. These can be well known songs or obscure ditties that have been generally overlooked by all but the most devoted enthusiasts. This CD includes material associated with such classic talents as Jimmie Rodgers, the Carter Family, Charlie Poole, Uncle Dave Macon, W. C. Handy and Fats Waller. But they have also covered songs by Bessie Smith, tackled Child ballads, and unearthed material by obscure early artists such as Alfred Reed, The Mississippi Sheiks, the Red Fox Chasers and the Tenneva Ramblers. When reviving an old song, the Red Clay Ramblers lovingly reinvent the originals with fresh, up-to-date arrangements, but their approach is never irreverent or casual. It's clear they love the old records they mine so productively, which inevitably results in their breathing new life into everything they touch. While they are dead serious and respectful of the old music at all times, they generally choose light, breezy and especially humorous tunes to entertain us with, although these can be interspaced with more somber, dramatic and poignant pieces.
Which brings us to their second specialty - their own original compositions. As composers, their lyrics are extremely funny. Their use of the language at times rivals such well-known wits as Noel Coward or even Stephen Sondheim, although theirs is generally a more down-to-earth and less urbane view of the world at large than either of these theatre legends. I wish that more of their CD's would include song lyrics (this one does not). I have actually typed out the words to some of their songs so that friends who are new to their music can get the full impact of their hysterically funny verses. Although there is not a bad tune in the entire 25 songs included on this release, I would like to offer some comments on several standouts.
The Twisted Laurel material opens with a medley of Blue Jay and The Girl I Left Behind, both traditional, one an instrumental. It sets the mood, but doesn't define all that is to come.
Twisted Laurel is an original composition that sounds like it should be traditional. One must listen carefully to get the full imagery of Tommy Thompson's thoughtful lyrics.
The Hobo's Last Letter, written by Bill Hicks, is one of their specialty songs. It manages to be clever, funny and touching at the same time, and is one of my favorite songs of theirs.
The Telephone Girl is a lighthearted jingle that will leave you smiling - a lot. The tricky yet simple lyrics are deftly handled by the group.
Will You Miss Me was a done originally by the Carter Family, and receives the appropriate reverent treatment here.
The Ace, which opened side two of the Twisted Laurel vinyl, is one of their most clever original songs, and about as funny as they get. It concerns the mishaps of "The Ace with the sweaty brow" and his efforts to score in the back seat of his car. The misadventures of our hero and the hilarious climax will have you rolling on the floor. Play it many times until you get every word of their delicious wit.
The Corrugated Lady is a clever medley of a modern song perfectly paired with an old Mills Brothers hit, Paper Doll. At the juncture of the second chorus, both songs are sung simultaneously, and they come together in an amazing climax of harmony and wit. The delivery is ingenious and the harmony sublime.
I Was Only Teasing You is another severely funny song, although not written by the group. The "punch line" never fails to get a laugh.
Beale Street Blues, written by W. C. Handy and reworked by Charlie Poole as "Ramblin' Blues" in 1928, is surprisingly urbane and witty for it's time. "...If Beale Street could talk, if Beale Street could talk, married men would have to take their bed up and walk; except one or two who never drink booze, and the blind man on the corner who plays the Memphis Blues...". Like the song says, "I'd rather be here than any place I know".
The Merchants Lunch tracks start with The Merchants Lunch, a comic masterpiece. The goings-on at that Nashville diner are too complicated to summarize here, but I found myself playing this song over and over until I knew every word.
Woman Down in Memphis is a great, wailing blues tune, so perfectly realized that it's almost scary.
I've Got Plans is the wishful ode of a dreaming wannabe. Nice.
Daniel Prayed is an á cappella masterpiece of old-time harmony.
Sweet and Slow, by Fats Waller, is the perfectly arranged and vocalized album finale.
I can almost guarantee that a few listens of this gem will have you scouring the internet to track down the rest of their releases. They're that good.
All in all, highly recommended!
Never heard of them?.......2003-09-27
If you love bluegrass and haven't, you need to. It don't get any better than this, and right here on the silver disc. If you buy this it's gotta be because you love bluegrass. If you love bluegrass, you'll end up buying them all.
DUH!.......2002-12-22
This is a no-brainer. Just look at the other reviews; five statrs across the board for their entire catalogue and these two may be their best!
Why RCR are not famous breaks the heart..........2001-09-09
Well, famous is not so important as persistence. I would bet most people buying this CD have the vinyl
sitting in their closet. I saw RCR 22 years ago & was
put back in my seat song after song. I never have had enough of them. If they had put out an album a week, I would probably keep up. I lent this retrospective to a friend
who is usually hard to draw a response and he came back with
a great big 'YES'. Unprovoked.

Best violinist since Rabin?.......2005-08-14
The first time I heard James Ehnes was his Bach and Paganini cd's and I though to myself... anyone who plays Bach and Paganini like that should be heard! When I heard his Bruch, it proved to me he is more than just a technician. This cd is no different: effortless technique, expressive vibrato, the ability to create drama, and it is clear to me the violin simply does what ever he wants it to do.
With the possible exception of Vadim Repin, James Ehnes is the best violinist to come along since Michael Rabin (Kogan Szeryng and Heifetz, of course, achieved this level of greatness before Rabin). And like Rabin, Mr. Ehnes also possesses the rare ability to play a virtuoso piece leaving you with your mouth wide open and then turn around and make it sing and cry with a lyrical piece that is exploding with emotion.
It is my opinion that his tone is improving, I seem to remember hearing that he has been working with the producers of his latest recordings in order to achieve a more abundant tone. His Dohnanyi recording that came out after this was improvement in tone to my ears. I have not heard the new Dvorak recording yet, I am wondering if that is yet another upgrade in tone? Im trying to imagine what it would sound like if Ehnes recorded the Brahms Concerto and having it produced by DG...
Nonetheless, it is my belief that before long, Mr. Ehnes will be a household name and when you hear him play you will understand why.

SOULFUL & FUNKY MASTERPIECE~BRAVO JACKIE & CO.!!!.......2006-08-09
Among the elite insider music community "Laurel Canyon" is a well known underground musical masterpiece that should have had greater commercial success but due to a strange lack of radio support and poor promotion from Liberty Records this musical treasure has mainly been enjoyed by hardcore connoisseurs of the finest in the world of music which is exactly what the incredibly great "Laurel Canyon" is...a true masterpiece!!! Thanks goes to the great London based RPM Records for this superbly remastered release of a true classic complete with lavish liner notes and a wonderful array of photos...look for other Jackie DeShannon releases on RMP Records as every collection is a must have! BRAVO RPM!!!
Opening this soulful set is a Jackie DeShannon original the title song "Laurel Canyon" which has a loose and funky arrangement and from the top it is easy to see that Jackie has a hot and cooking group behind her...no less than Mac Rebbenack (Dr. John) on the funkiest piano this side of New Orleans, Russ Titleman on Acoustic Guitar and in great form, keyboard legend Harold Batiste, Jr. also in peak form and Barry White leading the richly varied background vocals...this backing makes for a Jackie experience unlike any other in her magnificent career!!! "Sunshine Of Your Love" is hot and rocking while "Crystal Clear" is a deeply soulful mesmerizing vocal framed beautifully by a haunting guitar and a gorgeous unique arrangement. A wildly funky arrangement with superb piano licks make "She's My Best Friend" another winning rocker while "I Got My Reason" is pure gospel with a raw vocal from Jackie and "Holly Would" continues the gospel feel and is an original composition from Jackie. A Motown Classic "You've Really Got A Hold On Me" is given a rocking gospel workout that should have been released as a single and would have been a huge mega-hit with any exposure at all...a definitive version of "The Weight" was a hit but should have gone to #1 as it is that great and hearing this for the first time felt that Jackie is the greatest blue-eyed soul singer around and still do...this song is a total masterpiece and so is the tremendous and deeply soulful vocal performance that deserved to be a "Grammy Award" winner or at the very least should have been "Grammy Nominated"...was it? "Bitter Honey" is another tasty cooker and there goes that Dr. John on piano again...a beautifully haunting and intimate original "Come And Stay With Me" show what this legendary talent is all about as does the classic "LA" which is the most engrossing song about the great city around as it is so totally infectious...try not using the repeat mode on this classic!!! "LA" flows beautifully and captures the feel of life in Los Angeles with exhuberant soulful brilliance and it is amazing this great song wasn't a #1 smash hit...what were they thinking? Ending this masterwork is the deeply moving original "Too Close" and this scorching performance makes one weep that this brilliant masterwork was not given the massive exposure that it deserved...hopefully this great reissue will give this engrossing work the exposure that it justly deserves...listen in music lovers and don't miss out on this truly magical musical experience the second time around as it is as raw and richly soulful as they come...true musical genius!
Now for the awesome bonus tracks...starting with great Bobby Womack originals written and produced by the soul legend just for Jackie...this legend knows! "Trust In Me" is awesome with Jackie at her soulful peak on a great song with a fascinating arrangement and wonderous vocal...a funky "What Is This" has a great driving rhythm and "Happy Go Lucky Girl" is loose and soulful as is the winner "Ooh, You Did It Again" and it is easy for one to see this should have been a whole lp and it would have been a brilliant one...a great and musically inspired pairing!!! A jazzy and hypnotic "Effervescent Blue" and the remainder of this grand musical experience are Jackie DeShannon originals that show that this great singer/songwriter is a groundbreaking original and a real trailblazer for the ladies starting from the late 50's throughout the 60's and beyond..."The Greener Side" is an early song that has the great feel of the songs on "To Be Free" which is one of Jackie's greatest which was to come a few years later...a very sixties "Children & Flowers" preceeds the great sixties classic athem "Put A Little Love In Your Heart" which truly musically defined the sixties and is still valid today and has been recorded by various artists to great success a number of times over the years but this original version is still the ultimate...a timeless message and a glorious passionate performance that has always been a warm and comforting experience...thank you Jackie!!!
OOPS, She did it again!.......2006-03-31
The elasticity of the vocals mirrors the unfettered emotions and expansive hopes of the era that defined this music. Blissed-out soul, psychedelica and joyful pop collide in "Put a Little Love in Your Heart," " Happy Go Lucky Girl," and "Sunshine of Your Love." And if you long for this kind of music with today's sparkling production values, you should also pick up current groovesters and fellow female Brits Swing Out Sister ("Somewhere Deep in the Night") or Noonday Underground ("Self Assembly").

Customer Reviews:
Most Played Flute and Guitar Recording on Public Radio.......2004-12-23
I am not a musician but I recognize great music when I hear it. This one of my favorite CDs because it soothes me as I drive. If I get stressed by my long comute every day I pop Guiliani in and and feel like I have just arrived in sunny Venice on holiday.
The finest flute and guitar duo in the U.S........2003-04-16
The duo, Laurel Zucker and Richard Savino, are splendid together with beaty of tone, flawless technique and superb phrasing! You can hear them on another great CD, Native American Stories in Classical Flute Music, playing a newer piece by Katherine Hoover, also performed par excellence.
Flute and Guitar Duo the finest!.......2003-04-12
This flute and guitar duo plays so well together and the music is great.
