5 out of 5 stars Further progression of a good band... .......2007-01-18

Planes is one of my favorite groups, and they continue down their musical path with another solid album. The line-up remains strong as ever, and the music just as forceful and driven. In looking back on the 5 albums that I own from the self-titled 1999 ep through to this one there is a noticable and almost linear progession from each to the next, as the sound is developed and refined, without losing the raw agression of the one preceding. The result is an enjoyable one for long-time fans and a good certainty that new fans will be able to celebrate the whole catalog. One surprising gem is the final track which sounds like some raspy-voiced, whisky soaked roy orbison nightmare or something... So if you own any Planes album and enjoy it, this one will not dissapoint.

5 out of 5 stars Be not afraid.......2006-12-15

Now, this is an interesting listen. I bought this in eager anticipation being a bit Planes fan, and i was not dissapointed, just slightly thrown. In many respects it is a sign that they are ready to move onto a slightly more user friendly sound, a la Up in them Guts, but they have not lost any of the integrity of their powerful metaphoric lyrics. Examples like 'to spit a sparrow' opening with the line 'i'd rather be a bastard than a snake' show this. Gared O'Donnel's groucy anti-Tylerish vocals are still as potent as ever, backed up by the band's backing vocals on tracks like Penitance. All in all a great album for fans and newcomers alike. Now if someone would like to publish the lyrics online so my winamp will let me sing along i would be greatful.

1 out of 5 stars worst band name.......2006-11-28

Wtf is this ? Metal? I think not ,this is boring drivel, nothing original about these songs at all. This band needs to learn how to write better songs before they put out another cd.I would not recommend buying this...

5 out of 5 stars Truly a classic..........2004-12-14

I saw this band live not more than a month ago and I've never ben the same since. These guys have a great hardcore ethic among the entire band, and their personalities reflect it. They're real cool guys to talk to, real open, real funny, real passionate about their music. Hell, half of em were playing with the stomach flu and they still blew me away.

This EP is their first major release, coming from a label known to specialize in emo releases, Deep Elm. While lyrically the guys have emo sensibilities, their music reflects something much stronger. Guitars that twist and turn through different passages, going full force then breaking down to a painfully dangling riff (i.e. Knuckle Hungry). Vocals...god...vocals are incredible. Gared's voice is amazing, one of the most unique in music today. Raw, passionate, and never faltering. You can hear the bass setting mood through the entire record, great riffs and great tension. Drumming is very precise despite it's speed, can't beat it.

Buy this to own a classic, and buy it new, don't buy it used. better yet, go see these guys. They're always touring because they're just that cool.

5 out of 5 stars The cool part.......2003-07-23

Planes Mistaken for Stars have been one of my favorite bands forever now, and finally they have been recognized by the Colorado post as best underground band of the year (and would be every year if they could I'm sure), but this may mean they will be getting mainstream: they do; that's cool; they don't; that's cool too. Either, or, they rock the... house and this is the only album you can remotely label "emo"; more Deftones like I think, but their new stuff is more of a metal/hardcore melodic thing going on. This is a bad mutha fugga. Keep in mind though that the past 3 bands that have got band of the year have crawled to the mainstream so hold your breath because when this band gets signed to Island just like so many indie bands have been seen to do(Rival Schools, Quicksand, Thrice, Thursday), you can say you where there first. This band is the perfect mixture of Tool, At the Drive In, Nirvana, Deftones, Poisoin the Well, Refused and every other possible band that changed your life, but still maintaining their own unique sound. Don't be surprised when you see these cats opening up for Tool, or The Mars Volta someday...

5 out of 5 stars coo coo...........2001-10-05

YES this IS an emo record... an incredible one at that... True emo (not that postpop get up kids ...) at its best in the footsteps of such greats as Still Life, and Rites of Spring... BUY THIS RECORD!

5 out of 5 stars Pick this one up folks..........2001-10-03

This CD is absolutely amazing. I own over 100 albums, and most have wore off on me after repeated listens. This one DID NOT. I got this CD over a year ago, after hearing The Past Two and Copper and Stars. Let me tell you, it blew me away the first time I listened to it and it still does. Some songs take some getting used to, but that is just fine with me. Copper and Stars easily is on my Top 5 favorite song list. These people put everything they got into their songs.. AND NO THEY ARE NOT EMO SO JUST SHUT UP WITH THE EMO. If, say, Sony heard this album, I can tell you Planes would land a huge deal and make it big. They chose a different road though and decided to be "just another hardcore band". This album was more than just hardcore. They somehow blended melody with screaming vocals and made it all sound good. I just want to promote this CD as much as possible, people, BUY THIS ALBUM. And while your at it, tell Planes to go back to this style of music. They have what it takes to become huge.

What can I say, this album rocks. It honestly gets better with every listen. Planes Mistaken for Stars shows some pretty amazing potential with this album.

5 out of 5 stars Ugh..........2004-02-19

Looking back at my past review I categorized this record FAR too much. I'm sorry for this because I cannot express how awesome this record is and that it doesn't need to be categorized because its in it's own genre: it's like nothing you ever heard. I promise you this.

2 out of 5 stars At least the sleeve art is cool.......2003-05-03

I don't understand this new hardcore trend going on. I give this band props for sounding a little different, but really this is just a bunch of noise and screaming. "Screamo" or whatever the lable is. Plus all the songs sound pretty much the same. Pretty over rated stuff.

5 out of 5 stars David Iles is clearly miskaken (for an unexperienced listen).......2003-01-08

This album is one of the 24 cds i could not LIVE without. David Iles states that the music is simplistic: no; I'm sorry: not at all: NOT PUNK AT ALL EITHER! These guys are balls out awesome, and if you can't see that you're missing out, because I won't be surprised when I see these guys opening for Tool one day, or hell: maybe Tool opening for them. These guys clearly won't sink down to being on tour with NOFX or Blink 182 so don't look here if that's what you want: this is Trent Reznor blowing his voice out with inspirational lyrics of Chino Moreno and the guitar riffs of kick you in the face At the Drive In, but as hardcore and energetic as Poison the Well, The Dillinger Escape Plan, or Pantera. GREAT STUFF!

4 out of 5 stars sweaty, and hard.......2003-01-06

if ur looking for hard, honest, loud (VERY LOUD), fast, sweaty punk-infused rock...get this. PMFS have a heaping helping of attitude and snarl...two vocalists smash through these songs like its all they've got. The music itself is fairly simplistic, straight-forward. The mix isn't great, and some great guitar lines get almost completely lost beneath the barrage of sound, but this is a great album. Energy seeps out of every riff and drumbeat. This group has been touted emo (hasn't everything)...but frankly this would be the hardest and dirtiest emo out there....and its more along the lines of just straight up rock. Live?...a SERIOUS force to be reckoned with. Check out "Leveless" and "End Me In Richmond". Can't think of any bands they really...SOUND...like....so check em out..

4 out of 5 stars Appleseed Cast carries this album on it's shoulders.......2004-03-27

The Planes Mistaken For Stars song has great emotion and guiter riffs, and the Race Car Riot bring a unique and different guiter sound that is very light and scratchy but works for their message.

But let's face it, this cd is basically just a way to get more songs from the almighty Appleseed Cast. Their first song starts off slow but builds it's way up with emotional guiter riffs that rock out. Their second song (and my personal favorite on the cd) is powerful again with high pace drum and guiter work. This cd was made right after End of the Ring Wars, so Chris still has his angry tone filled with emotion, which I love. The song is a little more rough than anything on End of the Ring Wars but it would fit perfectly into that cd. The 3rd and last Appleseed Cast song starts off in a lonely position with a dreamy melody to it. Lyrics pop in randomly and the song gains sunlight. Chris sings with real emotion in the last song and it is felt through the entire song.

If you like the Appleseed Cast and simply can't get enough, pick this up to add 3 more songs to your collection.

5 out of 5 stars one of my favorite cd's.......2000-06-22

this is a really really good cd. all three bands play some of the best post-hardcore on the market. planes mistaken for stars is a really unique sound with cool scratchy vocals, race car riot is totally different and unique in their artsy, weird emocore sound, and well, the appleseed cast needs nothing said, they are simply the best band in the whole world, and it shows on this record. i highly recommend buying this album! buy it now!

      5 out of 5 stars Classic Martinu.......2007-06-26

My opinion of this is better than Wright's.

First, at least for the pieces I like best, Fresques and Sym La Jolla, the recording sounds just fine indeed.

Martinu, like certain other 20th century composers (i.e. Hohvannes)
tended to rewrite the same ideas a million times. So you have to pick and choose a collection of his stuff. If you are new to him, I suggest
the Fresques and the Sym La Jolla. These are excellent performances
      of these wonderful pieces.

      Doug McDonald

3 out of 5 stars Mixed results from an eclectic Martinu collection.......2003-12-01

This collection is of previously-issued recordings of James Conlon conducting the Orchestre National de France in various orchestral works of Martinu. These range in time from the Concerto for String Quartet and Orchestra, written in 1931, to the luminous 1955 masterpiece Les Fresques de Piero della Francesca. While this is an excellent selection of pieces, there are some problems with the recordings that prevent me from recommending this collection wholeheartedly.

The String Quartet Concerto is an work from when Martinu was still overly influenced by Stravinsky and Les Six. The outer movements have motor rhythms, spicy harmonies and some rather unsubtle percussion writing; the central slow movement is rather too angular to provide the lyrical relief that would perhaps have been a good idea.

Moving on to 1938, the Tre Ricercari are a set of three pieces for a small chamber orchestra with two concertante pianos. Again, they are not amongst Martinu's best works, though stylistically they mark a great advance on the previous work.

Later in that year, Martinu wrote one of his first outright masterpieces, the Double Concerto for two string orchestras, piano and timpani. This is an exceptionally intense work, the brooding motor rhythms of the outer movements counterbalanced by a bleak, introspective central Adagio.

The Toccata e due canzoni is for small orchestra with piano, written in 1946, and is a work that mixes the best and worst of Martinu. The rhythmically intense Toccata starts in the bass and is an astonishing essay in obsessively maintaining a bleak mood, but the two Canzoni are less consistent and tend to be at their best when recalling the mood of the Toccata.

1950's Sinfonietta La Jolla is a lighter piece, though for roughly the same scoring as the Toccata e due canzoni. Two rhythmic outer movements sandwich a lyrical slow movement. The rhythms are rather less obsessive and the structures less tight than in previous works, as by this stage Martinu was starting to move into his final rhapsodic phase.

Les Fresques de Piero Della Francesca was one of Martinu's last orchestral works. Written in 1955, this shows a very different face even to the Sinfonietta La Jolla. Much more rhapsodic, less dissonant and more loosely structured, this work is also stunningly orchestrated and a fount of endless melody. It is without doubt one of the finest of Martinu's works, and a classic of the 20th century.

The performances here are not entirely consistent--they're probably best in the Tre Ricercari and the two major works (Fresques and the Double Concerto) though none of them are unacceptable. Unfortunately the sound on these recordings is rather dry, and this does affect the enjoyability of some of the performances--leaving them lacking a feeling of joy. Nonetheless, this collection can be recommended with reservations to collectors on a low budget, as it does supply recordings of some hard-to-acquire pieces. (Incidentally, my copy has CD2's tracks on CD1 and vice versa, so if you get confused by works appearing to have the wrong instrumentation, that's probably what's wrong.)

This outstanding recording fills several serious voids in the catalog, not least of which is a complete set of the Gypsy Songs, some of Brahms's most exciting, irresistibly catchy, and fun choral music. We also get unsurpassed performances of his various sets of vocal quartets with piano--works that embody some of Brahms's most perfect and intimate musical expressions. This German choir gives exemplary interpretations, delivered with flawless technique. --David Vernier

            Album Description

The four works on this newly remastered CD are eloquent testimony to Harry Partch's aesthetic of corporeality. The music he composed for The Dreamer That Remains, for Rotate the Body in All Its Planes, for Windsong, and for Water! Water!, was intended as only one component in the total artistic experience. In these works music joins with drama, with film, with dance, even with gymnastics, as integral parts of the composer's vision.

"The eloquent and affecting The Dreamer That Remains (1972) was Partch's last work. It was commissioned by the patroness Betty Freeman for her film on Partch which was directed by Stephen Pouliot. Rotate the Body in All Its Planes (1961) was a spin-off of the "Tumble On" sequence in Partch's large-scale theatre piece Revelation in the Courthouse Park. It was premiered at the National Collegiate Gymnasts Championship in 1961. Windsong (1958) was also written for film, the soundtrack to a film by Madeline Tourtelot in which Partch saw the Greek myth of Daphne and Apollo. (A later version of the work was named Daphne of the Dunes). Finally, somewhat akin to a Broadway musical, Water! Water! (1961) is perhaps Partch's most lively and lighthearted work. It pokes fun at many targets, especially the rush of audiences for water at the interval; thus the subtitle: "An Intermission with Prologues and Epilogues.
