5 out of 5 stars Debut album and I believe his finest, of what I've heard from him.......2006-03-30

Astral Voyage was first released in Japan in 1978 under the title Ten Kai (the original LP also gave the English title of Astral Trip). This album got released in the United States in 1985 with the the slightly altered Astral Voyage title (but doesn't matter since "Ten Kai" pretty much translates the same), when he was signing up with Geffen Records to break through the American market. The cassette version has this gold print with the album title and artist name printed on the plastic casing itself, so if you own the Geffen cassette and don't have the print on the casing, you probably have a version where someone replaced the casing (after all cassette casings do have a habit of breaking even if just dropped by accident). Prior Ten Kai, Kitaro was a member of a prog rock band called Far East Family Band, in which he was going under his real name, Masanori Takahashi. The group released The Cave: Down to the Earth (1975), the English-language version called Nipponjin (1975, which also omitted a couple of songs in favor of a song from a band called Far Out, which was one of Kitaro's bandmate's previous bands) and Parallel World (1976) before jumping ship for a solo career. Far East Family Band continued for one more album without him and with a shortened and altered lineup for the album Tenkujin (1977).

Although I've seen sources that states that Oasis was his debut and released in 1976, it was actually a 1979 release, so Astral Voyage (Ten Kai) was actually his first. In my opinion, this is perhaps one of his less New Age-y, more experimental albums. He really created some really nice and interesting Moog sounds, plus he tended to use a lot of Solina string synths here. There's also use of acoustic guitar and sitar, and he does tend to explore some World music here, when he does, it (unsurprisingly) has a strong Asian feel. One cut has Koto, with an obviously Japanese feel (meaning Kitaro was exploring his Japanese roots there, no surprise), to another more Chinese-influenced number. But throughout all that, the synthesizers are quite present and the album is quite electronic. It's too bad this album really gets overlooked. He never even bothered to perform any of this live (his 1980 album In Person Digital only bothers with the Silk Road and Oasis albums), or include any of this stuff on compilations. Great stuff and if you can get a copy, it's really worth it.

5 out of 5 stars Smothered Under Astral Collapse..........2005-02-24

For those of you who like Throbbing Gristle, Coil, William S. Burroughs, Aleister Crowley, magick and experimental electronics, this is right down your alley. Angus Maclise was a composer, master percussionist, poet, mystic, calligrapher, occultist and former Velvet Underground member. His music runs the gamut of the experimental realm: drone, electronics & noise, tape cut-ups, spoken word, minimalism. Though he created a vast body of work from the 60's to 70's, it went unreleased, the master tapes sitting in a box in someone's closet. Only recently has his music been seeing the light of day via several releases on the Quakebasket label. The latest, Astral Collapse, compiles his more electronic/noise workouts:

1. Smothered Under Astral Collapse - Angus recites his Tibetan Buddhist poetry over prepared tape cut-ups. his source material for the prepared tapes is Tibetan chanting and some odd drum loops. the way he manipulates it gives it a really churning, eerie feeling.

2. 6th Face Of The Angel - Pure droning. 17+ minutes of transcendant, tape-delayed organ with little intricate change ups in oscillation and resonance.

3. Beelzebub - This is the only percussion piece on the album. The way he plays the drums and then sonically treats the mix creates a feeling musique concrete or early electronic pulse music. it's very glitchy.

4. Cloud Watching - a beautifully sinister piece. it's a murky blend of organic instruments that just twinkle and drone along in a hazy impressionistic cloud.

5. Dracula - Trial by noise. Angus rips apart the air with an ARP modular synthesizer. This kind of destruction wouldn't be heard again until Coil's Constant Shallowness Leads To Evil.

6. Dawn Chorus - several layers of prepared tapes cut up into a collage of white noise, eastern drone and field recordings from the East. Angus leads us back into more Tibetan poetry before letting us go.

You can really hear the sound that Coil would take on and expand. It foreshadows the concepts of Moon's Milk: Spring Equinox or Under an Unquiet Skull, Astral Disaster(they are eerily similar in more than just name) and Constant Shallowness Leads To Evil.

To quote Jhonn Balance, Angus is a "liminal genius".

5 out of 5 stars Into The Arms of the Night.......2000-08-01

Several years ago, I heard "Into The Arms of the Night" on Nightcrossings, a lite-jazz/new age program that runs Monday -Saturday nights on Radio Kansas out of Hutchinson,Ks(89.5 KHCD-FM).This is a great song for a candlelight dinner and a little night-time romance. For those of you looking for "mood" music, look no further. There are no loud or fast songs that pop up, and ruin the mood. These are all slow and easy, the way we like them. Do not pass this up!
