Editorial Reviews
About the Artist
Composer, pianist and songwriter Brenda Warren began playing piano and writing songs as a child. She entered the Detroit Conservatory of Music at eight years old. She graduated from San Francisco State University with a degree in Music. Soon after she co-wrote the musical comedy Breakfast in Marin which was nominated for a Cable Car Award for best musical in San Francisco. After performing solo piano in the Bay Area for several years she moved to Los Angeles and recorded Childhood Dreams her debut release. The album received airplay throughout the world and many of the pieces have been featured in television programs such as Entertaniment Tonight.
Brenda has written country songs which have been recorded by various artists. As Years Go By is her second instrumental album and again showcases her talent as a solo pianist and creative artist.

Helen Forrest & the Great Artie Shaw.......2007-01-07
Helen Forrest's compilation of recordings with Harry James is accurately called "Complete Helen Forrest with the Harry James Orchestra ", so you need to know, dear listener, that here, we're not dealing with "Sweeter as the Years Go By" (a lame philosophy by the way) but with the "Complete Helen Forrest with the Great Artie Shaw Orchestra." If you think that Jo Stafford was the ultimate Big Band female singer, with Peggy Lee coming close, give Helen Forrest a try - or a new try. You won't regret it!
Sweeter still..........2006-03-04
Helen Forrest had simply put one of the best voices of the big band era. Singing with such bands as the Benny Goodman and Artie Shaw. You could not pick a better selection for an introduction for this singer. Includes some of the best tracks of the big band era "Thanks For Ev'rything" and "I Poured My Heart Into A Song".
Sweet Memory Revival.......2004-12-16
This CD is excellent. Everyone who has to listen to it in my car has asked how to buy a copy. However, we're all senior citizens.
Helen and Artie were a great team.......2003-04-20
Helen was one of the finest and most successful female singers of the late thirties and early forties, in an era dominated by big bands who created some great music. Perhaps the most famous bandleader in those days was Glenn Miller, but singers were not particularly important to him (and that explains why most of the music he is remembered for is instrumental), so the truly great singers, of whom Helen was certainly one, looked to other bands for employment. So, Helen worked for Artie Shaw, Benny Goodman and Harry James. Her greatest successes came with Harry James, but the music here covers her time with Artie Shaw.
One of two collections covering the recordings that Helen made with Artie Shaw and his orchestra, this includes the American number one hits They say and Thanks for everything, together with the other hits You grow sweeter as the years go by, I poured my heart into a song and Many dreams ago.
In keeping with the music of the time, the musicians get plenty of chance to demonstrate their skills via long instrumental breaks, but Helen's lovely, clear voice is the most important instrument of all.
For Helen's other recordings with Artie Shaw, including I have eyes, Deep in a dream, Between a kiss and a sigh, Deep purple, Comes love, Melancholy mood, Day in day out and All the things you are, see the companion volume Sweet and simple. Together, these CD's include everything that Helen and Artie recorded together.
This is an outstanding collection of music by Helen, possibly the finest female band singer of them all.

The Artistry of Nelson Eddy.......2006-11-04
Nelson Eddy's flawless singing and diction, with a modern orchestral accompaniment, make The Artistry of Nelson Eddy a romantic, sophisticated musical experience.
Artistry of Nelson Eddy.......2006-08-22
Contemporary music which is sung well but voice not as expected of Nelson Eddy. The true baritone of his voice missing. This may be the recording but CD received in good condition.
A Nelson Eddy Tour de Force: Magnificence here on earth.......2006-03-17
I have most of the movies of Nelson Eddy. Together with Jeanette MacDonald, this team produced some of the most romantic movie-operattas ever made. But the sound quality of those movies pale in comparison to the magnificence of this production.
Nelson Eddy has never sounded better, aided (1994) by more modern recording techniques, the quality here (even with a disclaimer) is beyond belief. He has got to be one of the premier baritones of all time. Singing Popular tunes adapted from classical themes, he may be without peer. I have a CD of the young Sinatra singing "Full Moon and Empty Arms" to Rachmaninoff's Piano Concerto No. 2. He is not in the same universe with Eddy, whose crisp diction, timbre, fullness, perfect pitch, and passion ~ YES! PASSION! ~ must be heard (hopefully on on quality audio) to be fully appreciated. This is AWESOME. Maybe the best it gets here on earth. This is a wholly magnificent CD if you appreciate really good music, a fantastic baritone, and have a romantic bone in your body. I am astounded. Until today, I had no idea that Nelson Eddy was this good. This CD proves he was.
For those who are already fans of N.E. only........2003-12-22
Nelson Eddy made these recordings when he was about 60 years old and it shows. He retained an excellent voice for a very long time, allowing him to perform successfully until the day he died. However, this particular recording seems to emphasize vocal decline, in terms of control and range. The problem may be that the songs presented here are mostly VERY GREAT classical orchestral pieces, to which are sung pop lyrics. In my opinion, most (but not all) of the lyrics to these songs are not worthy of their music and are incongruous. The last number, "Alone Together", an excellent Schwartz/Dietz song (which seems out of place with Rachmaninov and Ravel,) is actually a duet with Nelson's partner, Gale Sherwood. It was recorded a couple of years later than the other songs on this album, and is given a bossa nova background that in this mix, practically drowns out the singers! As to the overall sound quality, there are some light snaps and pops as on a record, but the music is loud and clear. I do not mean to discourage Nelson Eddy fans from buying this album. I think you need this album. I own this album. Buy this album, and encourage the release of more albums and radio recordings by Nelson Eddy. What I do mean to say, is that "The Artistry of Nelson Eddy" is not the best introduction to the artistry of Nelson Eddy. His recordings from the 30's, 40's or even 50's are a better purchase for the beginner. Once you love Nelson Eddy, then pick up this album.
A Surefire Way To Turn A Bad Day Into A Good One!.......2003-04-12
The music on this CD is so beautiful it brings tears to my eyes every time I listen to it. It proves that the music of Nelson Eddy is simply timeless. I have always loved his voice, but these arrangements bring out the very best of it. It is highly recommended.

Michael Mann's warts-'n'-all biopic of three-time heavyweight boxing champ Muhammad Ali spans the most triumphant and turbulent decade of the legend's career. But like many a film marketing plan, its first soundtrack release seemed more concerned with selling CDs to those less familiar with Ali--and oddly, Mann's powerful film itself--than with accurately documenting the film's true musical soul. This second volume corrects that misstep, collecting much of Lisa Gerrard's and previous collaborator and former Dead Can Dance sideman Pieter Bourke's atmospheric, largely electronic underscore as well as an eclectic, less obviously pop-conscious slate of songs and music by Chicago bluseman Mighty Joe Young, nouveau R&B drum/bass/vocal merchants Dungeon East and Whild Peach, trans-genre cellist Martin Tillman, and Malian vocal legend Salif Keita. It's a release that variously seems better attuned to the director's own adventurous tastes in film scoring, more emblematic of Ali's own complex character and international legacy--and, more importantly, an ambience-rich document of the film's true musical and artistic spirit. --Jerry McCulley
Customer Reviews:
Magic moments.......2005-08-05
As usual, Michael Mann proves to have very good taste when it comes to the soundtrack for his movies. Forget about the 1st ALI CD that was released, this one is the real soundtrack for the movie. I agree that I really miss Salif Keita's "Tomorrow" but the other song featured here measures up to it. NOW YOU MUST LISTEN TO THE FIRST TRACK CAREFULLY. This piece of music is heard during the first fight in the movie, and though this is a shorter version on the CD, it is a genuine gem. The drums are totally mad and make you wonder how many hands the drummer had. Also when the bass guitar comes in, followed by the Hammond organ, it simply drives me mad to the point I sometimes listen to this track up to 10 times in a row when I drive to work.
almost there.......2002-04-23
I am excited to buy this CD to get the music of Lisa Gerrard and Pieter Bourke - the real musical stars of this film - for their excellent, emotional and heavily memorable score. However I am sorry that the Serif Keita track "Tomorrow" - which is easily the most pivitol musical scene in the film, was not included on this collection and was rather fed to the "less carings" on the "STAR" soundtrack #1. I would have loved to have its compliment here, where all the other emotional tracks have been comiled. But otherwise I am glad to see thios music worthy of its own release... because it IS. This is the real soundtrack to the film, ya'll. Don't miss it.
Ali Score.......2002-03-13
This is the soundtrack that should have been released instead of the first CD. Although at least you don't have to put up with any R. Kelly tracks this time. As a bonus you get Lisa Gerrard and Pieter Bourke's excellent score, the only downside is you don't get the track See The Sun featured on the first release. A definite purchase.

from Solo Piano Publicatons.......2004-08-02
"As Years Go By" is an intensely moving exploration of the depths of the soul. Deeply emotional and introspective, one senses the healing process of fully expressing oneself is taking place as we listen, healing our own wounds as we go. It has been ten years since Brenda Warren's previous solo piano recording, which was acclaimed worldwide. She has been writing songs with lyrics in the meantime, but felt it was time to come back to her roots in solo piano. Lucky us! Eight of the eleven tracks are solo works, and three are accompanied with strings or synth. The improvisational elements in the music give it a sense of freedom to develop and explore.
"Blue Island" is one of the more upbeat tracks, and opens the CD with a swirling and sparkling feeling. I had the pleasure of seeing Brenda Warren perform some of the tracks from this album live, and "Remembering You" is so emotional that it still deeply effects her every time she plays it. The mournful cello and violin accompaniment adds even more depth to the feeling of loss and remembrance. This is an amazing piece. "Sitting On A Star" is a bit lighter in mood. Dreamy and gentle, one can feel the peace of sitting on a star, watching the wind, moon, and other stars. "Waterfall" reminds me a lot of Janie Horton's fluid, melancholy music. Very improvisational in feeling, this piece is both peaceful and evocative. "Ancient One" is one of my favorites. Dark and mysterious, this is an ensemble work with piano and string quartet. It reminds me a little of the theme from "Requiem For a Dream," with an unsettled mood and a lot of inner turmoil. I like this one a lot! "Moonlight" is another favorite. Dark, but very peaceful, it is both flowing and graceful. "Goodnight" follows "Moonlight" almost as a continuation of the mood. "In the Light Again" is another beauty, full of hope and moving forward.
Brenda Warren has produced a stunning collection of piano solo and ensemble works with "As Years Go By."

Customer Reviews:
The best ever version.......2002-06-07
The wonderful cast transports you to the realms of Gilbert and Sullivan, to make you feel that you are experiencing a first night in 1881! John Reed, as Bunthorne, an aesthetic poet is superb, camp, subversive and a complete fraud. If anyone is not aware, the story of the opera is based upon the idiosyncracies of the Aesthetic movement in England of the 1880's and Gilbert used the public parodies of his friend Oscar Wilde as his major source. The rest of the cast, chorus and orchestra , under the long experienced 'Goddie' are superlative and make for one of the finest line-ups in D'Oyly Carte history. Revel and enjoy, for this is quite the best.
The Golden Cast of D'Oyly Carte!.......1999-04-13
My wish had always been to see John Reed and the D'Oyly Carte Company in a performance of Patience. My mother had done so, remarking that, 'You'd need patience to watch it', she was coloured in her opinion, since she wanted to see 'The Mikado', but had gotten the wrong tickets! The recording, made in 1961, is superb in every detail. You are with the cast, on stage, in the auditorium, it is such a 'live' performance. The dialogue is delivered exquisitely, whilst the singing is uniformerly of the highest standard. I recently portrayed 'Bunthorne' and throughout my performances, I felt that I was continuing the legacy of Gilbert and Sullivan. All the past history of performers were there. I feel that Patience is a magical Savoy Opera. Do not miss the opportunity to own such a definitive performance. Maybe the subject of the 'Art Nouveau' periodof Victorian England is dated, but as one critic has already stated, every generation 'throws up' its poseures, to be knocked. 'Ah, me! lack aday!' BUY IT!
The Definitive Recording.......1998-12-09
For those who prefer the traditional Savoyard renderings of the G&S canon, this is far and away the best recording of this parody of the cult of celebrity. John Reed leads the cast as a delightful Bunthorne, and the recording contains all of the opera's dialogue. "HMS Pinafore," "The Mikado," and "The Pirates of Penzance" may be better known, but "Patience" is deserving of a wider audience.

Customer Reviews:
Full Of Hope.......2006-12-17
This album shows another side of Blind Willie Johnson.
He uses his typical gravelly voice, slide guitar, syncopated rhythms and melodic phrasings...to share his hope and his faith.
This is a profound reflection on a man who was very poor, blind and black and lived through the depression era.
It's not exactly clean cut gospel music...but this is as genuine as it gets.
Also highly recommended
- "Dark Was The Night" which is one of the few pieces of music that tries to capture the torment of Jesus in the garden of Gethsamane.
- "God Moves On Water" expressing the oneupmanship sentiment on the sinking of the Titanic since some even boasted "God himself could not sink this ship"...and the contemporary debate that science and technology would provide the solutions to all problems.
