Bassist Charlie Haden was an integral part of Ornette Coleman's pioneering avant-garde groups in the '50s and '60s and led his own equally forward-thinking Liberation Music Orchestra. His ensemble Quartet West, with tenor saxophonist Ernie Watts, drummer Larance Marable, and pianist Alan Broadbent, revealed a sentimental side of his musical personality that surprised many. This recording, with string arrangements by Broadbent, sounds like a soundtrack to a Raymond Chandler film as Haden's sturdy bass tones make him a worthy supporting actor. But although Shirley Horn's ethereal voice sparkles on "Lonely Town," "In Love in Vain," and "I'm Gonna Laugh You Right Out of My Life," and crooner Bill Henderson's towering pipes are radiant on "Why Did I Choose You," "Ruth's Waltz," "You My Love," and "Easy on the Heart," all of the material is in pretty much the same ballad tempo, which, compounded by the time length of the CD, robs it of the romantic resonance it could truly shine on the listener. --Eugene Holley Jr.

5 out of 5 stars Age breeds a shining moment.......2003-11-20

The criticisms miss the point. This is an effort that does a rare thing - it brings together men and women who can put the experience of life to judicious use in their art. Unlike listening to the deterioration other performers have faced, in later years, at the hands of studio production teams that no longer know what to do with them, Charlie Haden has found a way to create a beautiful volume of space in which to let the years of these venerated performers shine through. It is in this space you shall hear the notes of lives lived and savored.

3 out of 5 stars Nice but dismissable........2001-08-09

Haden's pleasant miscellany of neglected but deserving ballads is indeed a mixed bag, but somehow his focus, purpose, and method elude this listener. Neophyte writers are frequently enjoined to compose with a sharp, definitive, unified "thesis." Haden could have used a bit of coaching along these lines before producing this collection. Even drawing upon a common composer (as opposed to ranging from Kern to Rachmaninoff to public domain) might have provided the needed coherence to the project.

In any case, it's always a welcome experience to hear Shirley Horn; the revival of a touching ballad like "In Love in Vain" merits our appreciation; and though I was never a big fan of Bill Henderson (an acquired taste), he deserves to be recorded based on the evidence of this recording.

In sum, this album is more than anything else a "sampler" and should have been priced accordingly.

4 out of 5 stars Disappointing by Quartet West standards.......2001-05-09

The outstanding Quartet West album is 'Always Say Goodbye'. On that CD, Broadbent demonstrates his skills at orchestral arrangement, and Haden deftly selects great oldies to intermingle with some of his own superb compositions. Haden also takes some historic performances -- such as Jo Stafford on vocals -- to bring a resonance to the new covers. The experiment was very successful.

You can see the logic behind this subsequent album: instead of using dusty old recordings, why don't we use today's state-of-the-art production to capture the voices of several current artists? And why don't we let Alan orchestrate the whole album?

The trouble is that the orchestration, beautiful though it is throughout, constrains the band terribly. And the vocals swamp the album. (Actually the Jo Stafford track on 'Always Say Goodbye' is one of the weakest on the album.) They say that the saxophone is the instrument closest to the human voice, and it is Ernie Watts who suffers most on this album, The sax is simply crowded out by all the singing. It is only on the stand-out track, 'Prelude en la mineur', an instrumental re-working of a Ravel piece, that Watts finally gets a chance to let rip.

Shirley Horn's vocals are fine, particularly on 'Lonely Town'. But I simply cannot listen to any of the tracks containing Bill Henderson's voice, and sadly, there are four of them.

The most touching song is the last one, where Haden himself bravely takes the vocal lead. It's a song his mother used to sing on the radio, back in the early 1940s, when the entire Haden family would appear on KWTO Springfield. It is a farewell to the dead, and also a reassurance that one day they will meet again.

If you want a quick survey of this CD, check out tracks #1, #9 and #13. It's a long way from the days of Haden's playing with Ornette Coleman and the Liberation Orchestra, and it's very mellow.

5 out of 5 stars If you breathe and have ears, buy this record!.......2001-04-15

I first heard of Charlie Haden on Dublin's best radio music show - The Mystery Train presented by John Kelly on RTE Radio 1. I bought this CD and it has never been off my current play list. This is beautiful music that touches the heart. Listen to Wayfaring Stranger, Lonely Town, I'm Gonna Laugh You Right Out Of My Life, or Ruth's Walz after a tough day at the office or jammed in traffic and you will be back in touch with the good things in life. As someone who has evolved though Thin Lizzy, The Eagles, Eric Clapton, Queen, U2, Ella Fitzgerald, Louis Armstrong, BB King, Grant Green etc, Charlie Haden is proof of my graduation. After since buying other and even better Haden CD's, I am looking forward to seeing him in concert with Quartet West here in Dublin on April 29. BUY IT NOW!

5 out of 5 stars A Night and a Lonely Town.......2000-05-24

Despite its problems, I think this album still deserves a five-star rating. Seemingly inspired by the music of moody classic cinema, a listener might well envision a seedy nightclub in a fog-swept black & white San Francisco of the 1940s or a tearful Ingrid Bergman about to board a twin-propellor leaving Rick and Casablanca behind her forever.

Regardless of which side of the Atlantic you envision on your moody musical journey, this is definitely a lounging type of music, perfect for lazy Sunday afternoons, after-theatre drives around town on warm summer evenings, warm candle-lit baths, or romantic dinners for two. The beautifully romantic ballads range from the longing "Lonely Town" to the mostly-resolute "I'm Going to Laugh You Right Out of My Life" to the quietly complacent "The Folks Who Live on the Hill." Interspersed with these great standards, however, are wonderful instrumental pieces which frame the remaining vocals with stunningly dramatic moods.

The only flaw is the rather unappealing voice of Bill Henderson, who seems to be suffering from a weak set of lungs, if not from lack of enthusiasm. Henderson seems to strive for the vocal capabilities of Shirley Horn, who sings on 1, 4, 7 and 10, but is incapable of achieving those same dramatic pitches of his fellow artist. Nevertheless, he does an adequate job on "Ruth's Waltz" and "Easy on the Heart" even if "Why Did I Choose You" is downright painful to listen to. Haden, who sings on 13, seems similarly incapable of reaching Horn's heights, but "Wayfaring Stranger," the traditional song he chose to render, is capable of carrying itself with the slow somber tone it evokes in the listener.

Regardless of its faults, this remains a beautiful album. I definitely recommend it to anyone who loves the kind of sit-at-home music it captures so very well in its beautifully jazzy tunes that are, at the very least, easy on the ears.

Drummer Tony Williams died suddenly, and tragically, in early 1997. His death struck hard, eliminating one of jazz rhythm's sharpest innovators since the 1950s. Williams first made his brilliance clear in the second great Miles Davis Quintet of the early 1960s. He whirled like mad later, especially with his own jazz-rock fusion trio Lifetime. In between, he created rhythmic vapor trails behind Miles and increased the wobbly rhythmic ratio with artists like Eric Dolphy. Sadly, in Young at Heart, we have his final recording. With Mulgrew Miller and Ira Coleman, Williams sounds as complex and hitting as ever. The tunes vary from standards ("On Green Dolphin Street" is the best here) to Williams's own tunes. Perhaps in honor of Williams, it sounds like the producer of Young miked Williams so he sounded louder, sometimes even domineering. But he was undoubtedly superb, and he mixes well with an unusually tough-toned Miller on the keys. --Andrew Bartlett

5 out of 5 stars A Showcase of Balladry and Wizardry.......2004-08-05

YOUNG AT HEART is a fitting climax to the life and career of a
great drummer and composer. Tony Williams has always been a
bulwark of musical wizardry, and his Jazz work over the decades
is the stuff of legend.

This Columbia date from the mid-late 1990s finds Williams
at the helm of a sterling trio with bassist Ira Coleman and
pianist Mulgrew Miller, and the session is simply delightful!
Those who like a classic Jazz trio full of melody, playing
full-out with no stops, listen to this.

A wonderful collection of ballads ("On Green Dolphin Street"),
standards ("This Here") and originals (Miller's stunning opener,
"Promethean" and one of Williams' haunting themes from THE
STORY OF NEPTUNE), this is a great treat for longtime listeners,
and a special nugget for beginners who want a prime case of
what this music is all about. Swinging and cohesively free, this
is a showstopper.

With luck, Blue Note will re-release all of Williams' recordings
with this rhythm section plus the astonishing trumpetry
of Wallace Roney, soon. In the meantime, here is Jazz of the
highest order. Come in, please.

5 out of 5 stars Long Live the Great Tony Williams. Five Stars!!!!.......2004-05-06

The lose of drumming great Tony Williams in 97' was something the jazz community has yet to recover from. This excellent trio CD is well recorded, and is some of his most inspired work since the 60's! In the area of the recording itself; yes- there is a slight studio polish to it, but not enough to detract from the music, or the sound of the musicians. Sony was very proud of its gear(re: liner notes), but don't drop a letter of complaint, as I'm sure all the engineers are live wire types!!- hehe. Humor aside, pick up this wonderful album and remember the genius that was and is Tony Williams. cheers jb

5 out of 5 stars tony in a trio.......1999-12-23

this is a great trio cd and shows off tony's gentler side that has not been captured that often

5 out of 5 stars Buy it!.......1999-08-27

If you're any fan of modern jazz, Tony William's final album is surely one to have. He plays about as well as he did during his Lifetime era. Yet, TW is not the only attraction on the album. Pianist Mulgrew Miller displays a fine lyrical touch. Although the album is a bit low-key, the performances are well worth repeated listenings.

3 out of 5 stars Committee of Engineers Have their Way With Tony's Legacy.......1998-12-04

When Tony brought this group to New York, the "New Yorker" complained that Tony used an immense set and was too loud. That was the innovative point of his piano trio, that the drums would finally play an equal role in the proceedings. Narrow-eared critics always believe drums are too loud if they don't merely "accompany" melody instruments. In accordance with this cocktail piano tradition, the recording engineer and his 3 or 4 assistants here relegate one of the greatest drummers in jazz history to the background (right of center), and artificially promote a merely competent pianist (aside from a certain harmonic piquancy) to the foreground. The tone of the drums (as that of the piano, for jazz) has been well recorded, but the drums cannot be heard over the piano. I want to actually listen to the nuances of those brushes, not just imagine them! The rather boomy string bass sound often lacks definition and thus tends to cover Tony's expressive bass drum work. Lip service in the liner notes is given to Tony's stature as a musician, but he is kept "in his place" with conventional studio mastering. A shame. Retaining "Young At Heart" as the title for posthumous release in this country is indefensibly cruel. I much prefer the series of quintet albums on Blue Note beginning with "Foreign Intrigue" and tragically concluding with "The Story of Neptune." From a purely jazz point of view "Civilization," the second, is probably the best overall, though the last contains the tremendous rhythmic tour de force "Creatures of Conscience," and Wallace Roney on trumpet improves with each successive recording. The sound quality on these can be rather harsh and flat, and there are balance problems, but the drums are definitely not slighted! Mulgrew Miller appears on them all, but in proper perspective.

5 out of 5 stars Arguably "The Best" English "Merry Widow ".......2006-09-12

This is the "Merry Widow" with English translation by Christopher Hassel sung by June Bronhill. I loved this rendition ever since I first heard it in about 1960. What's to love? First the translation is the best I've heard. The language doesn't sound "stilted" as some others. And, you can understand almost every word sung. Plus, the famous song, "Vilja" has some wording that moves me every time I hear it: The soprano sings, "Love me and I'll DIE for you!" with the word "die" somewhat emphasized. I don't know, there's just something "powerful" about someone saying they'd "die" for love! AND, at the end of "Vilja" the chorus and soprano raise to a crescendo hitting a high note together. In many renditions the chorus is heard but not the soprano on the final high note. In THIS version, the soprano, June Bronhill, can be heard rising to the final high note with an incressing crescendo and fortissimo louder than the chorus and holding the final high note---which gives a very thrilling effect as she holds that final note, I assure you!

The "problem" is that this June Bronhill, Reid, and Hassel version is hard to find on CD. For example, this CD is made in Holland and "there is one left" so it says on Amazon. But, if you can find it, I think it would be very much worth a listen. Then, after hearing it, if you think there's a "better" Merry Widow, please let ME know! Thanks. Email:boland7214@aol.

Album Description

Two of Perry's popular "swing" albums, albeit very different one from the other, "Como Swings" and "For the Young at Heart" were recorded back to back at RCA's Webster Hall, New York City, the first in 1959 and the other in 1960, representing two different views of a swinging Como. "Como Swings" was produced by Charles Grean and Lee Schapiro whereas "For the Young at Heart" was the first of five albums produced for Perry by the legendary team of Hugo and Luigi. Both albums are charming and show Perry Como in a very different light from his traditional low-key persona. A highlight of "Como Swings" is a non-credited duet with Como's choral director Ray Charles within the song "To Know You (Is To Love You)".

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Como really swings and has a really young at heart approach!.......2006-01-25

Perry Como, was one of the finest singers of the 20th century and of all time. His beautiful voice, wonderful personality and handsome looks endeared him to millions Worldwide!

On this 2 on 1 CD, we see to superb albums from the late 50's - early 60's, showcasing two artistic and very versatile aspects of Perry's beautiful voice.

We start off with an album of swinging tracks to get you going, called 'Como Swings' with a beautifully smooth controlled rendering of each track included. With everything from Perry's sophisticated and very cool version of '(Get your kicks on) Route 66' to his wonderfully smooth voice spreading over 'Mood indigo'.

The second album included within this CD is 'For the young at heart'. This album is full of songs that are perfectly suited, not only to Perry's voice, but to his overall outlook and personality. Listen to Perry's version of 'Young at heart', which he undoubtedly makes his own! The song is generally associated with Frank Sinatra, but I would say Perry's version is much more definitive as it is expressed within the playfulness of Perry's phrasing and the arrangement of the song. Perry also sings 'Hello young lovers', which has become a classic in the history of Como. Perry actually recorded this song originally back in the early 1950's, but re-recorded it for this album in the early 1960's. 'Hello young lovers' became a song Perry used for the opening of many of his shows live performances, along with 'I've got you under my skin', also included within this CD (on the 'Como Swings' album)

This CD is a must have for Perry Como fans and all other music fans as well!

Well worth adding to your collection. As with many of the CD's from the 'Collectables' range, sound is not fantastic and some songs sound better than others!

However, I can give this CD the full 5 stars, just because of Perry Como, who despite poor - fair mastering within the CD can still be heard, displaying his beautiful vocals and charm! - WHICH SHINE THROUGH WITH FLYING RESULTS!

If you haven't listened to these albums before, I suggest you do so as soon as possible!

Well worth the money! Like all of Como's work. It is however a shame that the engineers don't put in the amount of effort into re-mastering these wonderful songs, as Perry did into recording them!

5 out of 5 stars Versatile.......2001-06-17

This shows the versatility this man had. One usually thinks of him as a crooner of love songs, but there seemed to be nothing the man couldn't sing and sing beautifully. He will always be a star and this shows it. N. Lacey

4 out of 5 stars Fine by me.......2001-05-30

I just listened to this album today, and found the sound and songs OK for my ears. The instruments on the "swinging" portion are strong, but I feel that was the intent, and I do not feel Perry's voice is drowned out. One major reason I got the album was I wanted to hear how Perry handled 50s hits like "Too Young" and "Young Love"--very well in my book! (Though the thought that Tab Hunter and Perry both recorded "Young Love" does cause a little whiplash.) By the way, "Young Love" was one of the four songs not taken from master tapes, but I could discern very little degradation of quality on this or the other ones. A good album for Como lovers.

4 out of 5 stars Classic Como.......2001-05-27

This compilation of two albums by the late Mr. C. is a document of his accomplishments as a singer, as his "pop" hits sometimes did not effectively show. He was after all a "band" singer first, during the thirties and early forties, and unlike most of them, including Sinatra and Crosby, Como could read music and play instruments. His fine musicianship and vocal technique show in these songs, accompanied expertly by Ayres and his orchestra and the Ray Charles Singers.

Unfortunately RCA/BMG did not choose to go to the best master sources for this disc. The sound duplicates the typical RCA Victor "LP" sound of the late 50's: shrill and bass-shy, with clumsy editing and "sweetening", more evident in the digital medium than they were on LP. There is clearly more in these masters than is evident here. This is the reason for a rating of only four stars. Otherwise, this disc is highly enjoyable to listen to.

3 out of 5 stars Shrill sound!.......2001-05-16

If you can still get the Japanese Cd of "Como Swings" do so. The transfer on this Cd is "over produced", at times the "shrill sound" overpowers Perry! A most disappointing transfer. The second album "For The Young At Heart" is a better transfer, although a much lower volume sound??!! Why the use of 4 vinyl masters????? It seems quality is not the name of the game for "Collectables"!!!

    Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Bravos belong to beloved baritone Howard Keel.......2005-08-30

Travel back in time to an era when songs were created to enjoy like a rich desert that your mom would make. Howard Keel and his various duet partners have done just this! This CD has a wonderful selection from the great musicals of the 1950's and makes you smile....sigh....and seek to hear them again and again. I would encourage you to add this to your collection as I have. I've even shared it with many of my friends who have come back with the same remarks of great music from one of the great singers of our recent past.
