About the Artist
Kerry Livgren was born in Topeka, Kansas the first son in a family of six. Drawn to music at a young age, his first musical interests developed with classical and jazz influences while his peers were embracing Elvis Presley. Starting with an electric guitar he built himself, Kerry focused on writing songs as he learned to play -- seeking to create songs that if nothing else, were original. Kerry's first band was the Gimlets, which he formed with several close friends in high school. After school and on weekends, they soon found themselves booked throughout Kansas and neighboring Missouri. Kerry's involvement with the band continued through college, before joining the Mellotones, a mainstream rhythm and blues band. Driven by a desire for more creative expression, Kerry formed Saratoga, who played for audience members around the area, including a young drummer named Phil Ehart and a bass player, Dave Hope. In 1970, they formed the group, Kansas, combining the best members from their respective bands. Known for their sometimes bizarre originality, the band went through several iterations before becoming the six-member group signed by Don Kirshner in 1973. Kerry remained with the band for 13 years as the band's primary song writer, lead guitarist and keyboard player. Penning such hits as "Carry On Wayward Son" and "Dust in the Wind," Kerry propelled the band to worldwide success and critical acclaim, with numerous gold and multi-platinum albums, and over 14 million recordings sold to date. In 1980, after becoming an evangelical Christian, Kerry Livgren released his first solo work, Seeds of Change, featuring vocalists Ronnie James Dio and David Pack of Ambrosia, Jethro Tull's drummer Barriemore Barlow, and guest spots by friends from Kansas. Also accompanying the album was Kerry's autobiographical book of the same name. Together, they expressed the passage and resolution of Kerry's years-long spiritual journey, often the subject of his songs with Kansas. Following his departure from Kansas in 1983, Kerry recorded his second self-produced album for CBS, Timeline, in the same year. With the musicians involved in that project, he formed the band, AD. Between 1983 and 1986, the band released two albums and toured extensively. Kerry next signed with Sparrow records and released Prime Mover in 1988, followed by his first instrumental work, One of Several Possible Musiks in 1989. Exploring a new musical direction, this confluence of orchestral and rock styles received the Dove Award for Instrumental Album of the Year. Livgren concluded this period with his final album for Sparrow. Decade was a double CD retrospective marking ten years since his first solo recording. Featuring two complete albums, excerpts from others and previously unreleased songs, the set continues to be highly regarded among enthusiasts of his music. In 1994, Kerry moved from Atlanta back to his home town of Topeka Kansas. Once there, he initiated his production companies, Grandyzine, and record company, Numavox Records. As part of this work, he constructed a state-of-the-art recording and production facility on his farm, in the frame of a restored barn. This studio would serve as the nexus of his and many other musician's work through the present day.

"Though I dearly love Georgia, it was great to be back in Kansas (the state) again. I immediately felt at home. There's something about returning to your roots that's inspiring." Composed over the period of two years, Kerry's next album clearly expressed this sentiment as one his most celebrated. Entitled "When Things Get Electric," this 1995 release was also the debut album for Kerry's new label.

Over the next several years, Mr. Livgren worked on recording projects with other artists, before returning to solo work in 1997. That year saw the release of his first soundtrack, for the third SONY's Mind's Eye computer animation feature, comprising the work of more than 100 computer artists. Numavox released Prime

1 out of 5 stars Worst of the bunch.......2004-07-10

I've been a fan of the minds eye videos since the beginning, but this one is a huge dissapointment. There's nothing on here that is very impressive, the music is bad and the DVD production is horrible. The minds eye series used to be cutting edge computer graphics, but this one seem to be amature computer graphics produced by amatures.

1 out of 5 stars Odyssey into Tripe.......2004-06-14

The only two reasons you would consider viewing this are because you're a fan of the Mind's Eye series or interested in CGI in general. Take note: it doesn't live up to either standard. Don't purchase it, even used -- in fact, don't even rent it, or borrow it from a friend that may have been duped into owning it. If you are forced, or yet choose, to watch this, mute the television and play a deep ambient soundtrack instead. The only quote from the back cover which can be trusted is "Strap yourself in..." You'll have to if you intend on watching through the end.

Both the musical score and the CGI are themselves inept -- taken together, even worse.

The "camera" motion, when not stuttering behind moving objects, is too clinical, you can almost feel the programmer's commands... "turn POV left, stop. Pan up, stop. Zoom, stop." The content suffers the same fate of poor production. For instance, the first vignette, 'Oceanic Celebration,' is simply a montage of marine settings. They've taken this collection and given it a title and not much else -- sort of like the dolphin screensaver theme you can buy from an office supply store. Some of the other segments at least have a little story, and 'Out of Step' has a little lesson, but even then you're subject to the amateur editing -- quick and redundant cuts between scenes and camera angles.

The quality of the CGI itself is underwhelming, not bad, but not good either. But let's say you're willing to watch this anyways. You will still have to deal with the soundtrack. The cover quotes "Powered by a soaring original score from KERRY LIVGREN, founder and former guitarist of legendary rock group Kansas." Right there you know you're holding a winner. I suppose some of the tracks aren't horrible, but taken in context with the content, this is just a marketing concept gone awry. The rock score not only clashes with the whole idea of CGI, but it doesn't even match the animation in each piece. (Correction: there is a single minute of synchronicity, with the festive hammer in 'Out of Step' -- but its little theme is so jarring from the rest of the piece that you shake your head anyways.) That's bad enough, and then you get to the vocal tracks with 'One Dark World' and 'Aspen Moon' -- these are perhaps the only redeeming value of this odyssey, which at its worst moments will at least finally make you laugh.

5 out of 5 stars Outstanding !!! I recomend this. 5 Stars.......2004-03-11

Graphics were great!! There were (I believe) 11 tracks, and each track was different in theme, which added spice to the DVD. The entire musical theme was done in a rock musical format, with several tracks (2 or 3) actually had singing in it by Kerry Livgren (who was a member of the group: Kansas). I felt that the music went extremely well with the graphics!! It was very upbeat, not radical or harsh in any way, and there was very little singing in it - just music that helps sweep you away with the beautiful graphics. If you dont like Rock, you may not like this DVD, but I still recomend giving it a try. Some tracks featured spacey worlds, one had dinosaurs, spaceships, underwater scene with a dolphin being chased by a sea monster, tropical islands, robots, and just far out computer animation! Highly recomended - I'd say that this is the best Computer Graphics DVD I've purchased (out of 6 so far).

5 out of 5 stars Best of the bunch.......2002-09-13

I have most all of the CG animations. Beyond and Gate are good as well but this one has the most moving graphics with the best sounds. Very, very cool. If you like this kind of thing at all, Into The Minds Eye is a definite MUST HAVE !!!!

4 out of 5 stars surprisingly great!.......2002-03-15

This album is one of the best things KERRY LIVGRIN has done, with or without KANSAS. Most of it is instrumental. The surpris-
ing thing, or one of the surprising things, is LIVGRIN's guitar
playing, which has never sounded better, especially his lead
guitar playing. This is the most hard rock oriented album that
I've heard him do. Another surprising thing is how good these
songs are. My favorite songs include the album's opening cut
"OCEANIC CELEBRATION"; a very heavy progressive rocker with
a very catchy guitar riff and some outstanding drumming and
CREDENCE LENT and UTOPIAN DREAM. What's nice is that it doesn't
sound a bit like his work with KANSAS and it sure beats anything
they've done since he left. A very enjoyable progressive hard rock album!
